While most of the plates show individual women with fancy headresses, four depict couples; one plate depicts a couple riding in a horse-drawn carriage, two show couples strolling, and a fourth is of two women with a dogcart. Finally, one plate shows a man alone leaning against the prow of a beached dory, pipe jauntily in mouth, waders up over his thighs, wearing a red tee shirt that is as red as a Dutch tulip. The contents unfold accordion-style in one long strip comprised of four pieces neatly joined together in a => leporello binding. Fully extended, the images "spread" => almost six feet. Included as illustrative material is a sample of genuine gold from the California mines, as well as an inserted leaf illustrating California and Mormon coins, in gilt. The authors were the official assayers for the Philadelphia Mint at the time of this work's publication, and the book was intended as a guide for those unfamiliar with recent advances in coinage and assaying. The text includes much data regarding the recent strikes in California, and devotes an entire chapter to the analysis of the quality of ore coming from California. The sample is included so that the novice can discriminate between alloyed and unalloyed gold. There is also a discussion of the coinage of various countries of the world, including the TONG TSIEN of China, a "trashy coin...extremely convenient for alms-giving, a single piece being the usual quietus for a beggar." Bigsby was appointed medical officer and secretary to the British Boundary commission which, at that time, was involved in determining the boundaries in the Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie areas, the surveying of the northern areas of Lake Huron, and the surveying also of the large wild area of Fort William and the Lake of the Woods.         Paintings of a Groined Ceiling in the Church of St. Francesco at Lodi. XIV Century

      [London: Thomas McLean, 1850]. Color printed lithograph with hand- finishing by W. Loeillot. 19 x 23 1/2 inches. A superb and colorful plate from the seminal "Specimens of Ornamental Art" Ludwig Gruner designed this study of motifs of ancient and Renaissance classicism while he resided in England. There he had participated in the design of the Crystal Palace and advised Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on acquisitions for what would become the Victoria and Albert Museum. Indeed, this sumptuous work on Roman and Italian design was dedicated to Prince Albert. His bold renditions of largely forgotten Classical pictorial ideas excited a revival in interest in earlier ages and cultures and spawned Owen Jones' work on ornamental motifs generally. But Gruner's grand, striking visual quotes from Italian palaces, churches and ancient buildings resonated with the Imperial mindset of England, France and Germany and established Classicism, once again, as the appropriate mode of architecture and design for rulers.

        Sarcophage de Scipion

      [Paris: circa 1850]. Pencil, pen and wash drawing, with numerous, detailed measurements. 26 x 20 inches. A fascinating and beautiful drawing--or "rendu"--of an ancient Roman sarcophagus. A fine drawing from an architectural student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the most influential architectural school in existence during much of the 18th century, the whole of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century. 'Students were eligible for the Ecole if they were at least fifteen years old, or under thirty. They began with the seconde classe, in which they competed in the concours d'émulation. These alternated between an esquisse --a rough sketch for which up to twelve hours was allowed--and a rendu --the large-scale finished drawing for which one to three months were allowed...Two to four years were usually required for a student to accumulate enough credits to enter the première classe. The same system was followed again, usually for two to three years, after which the student should have accumulated enough credits to compete for the Grand Prix de Rome. The winner of the Grand Prix was entitled to five years study under the auspices of the French Academy in Rome... For each of his first three years he was required to submit an analytical study of an ancient monument. For his fourth year he had to submit a complete reconstruction of a major classical work. For his fifth year he was required to submit an original work designed to a program of his own invention... "This study of the sarcophagus of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus was part of an Ecole de Beaux Arts student's portfolio. The sarcophagus was one of many in the Scipio family tomb on the Via Appia just outside of Roma, and it dates from c. 290 B.C. The obituary text reads, English, "Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus, son of Gnaeus, a valiant gentleman and wise, whose fine form matched his bravery very well, was aedile, consul and censor among you, he conquered Taurasia and Cisauna, in fact, Samnium, he overcame all the Lucanian lands and brought back hostages." Framed Size: 21 x 46 inches. Two splendid, panoramic views of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore Catering to the foreigners flocking to the region on The Grand Tour, this pair of hand- painted prints beautifully depict the famed, picturesque lakes, with rich bands of blue highlighting the water and sky, with the surrounding hills and mountains dotted with luxurious villas. In the view of Lake Maggiore, we see from a very high vantage point the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori,with their extraordinary gardens. The view of Lake Como looks north up the lake towards Switzerland from above Bellagio, which occupies the point at which the lake divides in two. The paintings are clearly intended as a pair, the images being almost identical in size with matching black painted margins. The prints are as issued with black labels covering the original printed titles

A collection of hypothetical dialogues between Christians and Jews on various issues, including: “Have the Jews corrupted their Scripture? ” – “Dissimilarity between the Christian Messiah and the one foretold by the Prophets, ” – “Jesus a Prophet, ” – “Reason of the continued exile of the Jews, ” – “Comparison between the Law of Moses and that of Jesus; an abrogation of the former, and practicability of the latter, ” – “Reasons of the Jews being so determinedly opposed to Christianity, ” – “The general expectation of the Messiah and consequent appearance of so many pretenders about the time when Jesus appeared. ” Selig Newman was a German Hebraist; he "was educated at Posen, but in 1814 went to England and was appointed minister to the Plymouth [Jewish] congregation, teaching Hebrew at the same time at the University of Oxford. His faith debarred him from a professorship, but among his pupils were numbered many distinguished Christian and Jewish scholars. While in London Newman took part in a spirited debate with some Christians on the Messianic prophecies. At an advanced age he sailed for America and settled in New York, gaining a livelihood as teacher and writer. In 1850 he published a work entitled 'The Challenge Accepted, ' consisting of a series of dialogues between a Jew and a Christian respecting the fulfilment of the prophecies on the advent of the Messiah. He published also: 'Emendations of the English Version of the Old Testament, ' 1839; a 'Hebrew and English Lexicon, ' 1841; and a Hebrew grammar, which was much used for elementary instruction among English Jews. (cover has little wear on corners and spine).  Plate of George Copway opposite title page and tissue covered.  Age toned pages, otherwise very good condition. A nice copy.Dedication page reads as follows: "The Short Sketch of the Bravery and Prowess of the Ojibway Nation, is most respectfully Dedicated to Col. T. L. McKinney, by his Friend, K". Verses of the battles through which the Ojibway Indians took control of the lands controlled by the Sioux around Lake Superior and east of the Mississippi River.Presentation copy lightly written in pencil  "Presented to Mrs. Ward By her most obliged friend Kahgegagahbowh? and lower down under this: NY May 30 1850 No 97 (...)"An epic poem but with controversy.  Julius Taylor Clark, a former Indian agent, later claimed (and probably did) to have written it. Apparently Clark gave the manuscript to Copway to publish on the understanding that Copway would use the money earned to promote the creation of an Indian territory west of the Mississippi. An early poetic narrative published by a Native American writer. Copway, wrote extensively about the history, culture, and traditions of his people. Field 363; Sabin 16718.

January 1869) was a Mississauga Ojibwa writer, lecturer, and advocate of Native Americans. His Ojibwa name was Kah-Ge-Ga-Gah-Bowh or "Standing Firm" or "He who stands firm".The first edition, as published in New York by S.W. Benedict, New York, the first edition. Copway was born near Trenton, Ontario, into a traditional Ojibwa family who later converted to Methodism. After conversion, he attended the local mission school and eventually became a missionary for the Methodist church.In 1840, he met English woman Elizabeth Howell whose family were farmers in the Toronto area. They married and moved to Minnesota to serve as missionaries. The couple later returned to Canada where Copway served as a missionary for the Saugeen and Rice Lake Bands of the Ojibwa. In 1846, he was accused and convicted of embezzlement and was defrocked by the Methodists.He then left Canada for New York City and wrote The Life, History and Travels of Kah-ge-ga-gah-Bowh (1847), the first published book by a First Nations person.In 1851, he started his own weekly newspaper in New York City titled Copway's American Indian which ran for approximately three months. He died in Oka, Quebec.

      - Grenada, West Indies: 1850. Pencil and wash on paper, signed in ink lower right 'W.T. Bellairs R.N.', inscribed in pencil at top of image. Sheet size: 7 x 10 3/4 inches. An important view from the harbour of St. George's, Grenada, looking inland with the peak of Richmond Hill framed against the skyline According to William R. O'Byrne's A naval biographical dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London hold two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982. As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York Public Library collection, and is described by Deak).         Specimens of Ornamental Art Selected from the Best Models of the Classical Epochs Plate #70. Painted Ceiling and Freize from the Palazzo Veccio at Mantua. XVI Century

      London: Thomas M'Lean, 1850. First printing A Near Fine Original Chromolithograph. Folio. 25.5 x 20 inches, 647.7 x 508 mm. Elegantly French-matted in natural rag and framed in period gilt molding. (32 x 27 in, 812.8 x 685.8 mm). This fine and rare plate was printed in multiple colors, requiring up 20 separate stones, and finished by hand. The work was most likely executed by Wickelmann & Sons of Berlin, for which they received the Metal Prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Considered the very height of Victorian color printing, the work was designed by Lewis (Ludwig) Gruner, (1801-1882). Born in Dresden, Gruner became Prince Albert's trusted adviser on art and design, particularly concerning details on the noted Crystal Palace, and potential acquisitions for the newly formed the South Kensington Museum, which was to become the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1852. In addition, Gruner was mentor to Owen Jones, whose massive book production, which included his popular treatise entitled The Grammar of Ornament, influenced the very nature of color plate printing and Victorian book design. In his invaluable bibliography entitled Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing, (University of California Press, 1972), Ruari McLean states, In Lewis Gruner's Specimens of Ornamental Art, many of the polychromatic plates are the finest yet seen in Britain, the craftsmanship to produce which must have rivaled that of the original artists, who include Giotto and Michelangelo, (and Raphael). Dedicated to Prince Albert, the expressed purpose of the work was to provide examples of design and ornament for industry, and is clearly one of the most impressive achievements of mid-Victorian color printing.         Details of the Paintings in Sta. Anastasia at Verona (Plate II)

      [London: Thomas McLean, 1850]. Color printed lithograph with hand- finishing. 19 x 24 1/2 inches. A superb and colorful plate from the seminal "Specimens of Ornamental Art" Ludwig Gruner designed this study of motifs of ancient and Renaissance classicism while he resided in England. There he had participated in the design of the Crystal Palace and advised Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on acquisitions for what would become the Victoria and Albert Museum. Indeed, this sumptuous work on Roman and Italian design was dedicated to Prince Albert. His bold renditions of largely forgotten Classical pictorial ideas excited a revival in interest in earlier ages and cultures and spawned Owen Jones' work on ornamental motifs generally. But Gruner's grand, striking visual quotes from Italian palaces, churches and ancient buildings resonated with the Imperial mindset of England, France and Germany and established Classicism, once again, as the appropriate mode of architecture and design for rulers.

Original-Verlagseinband, Halbleineneinband - NDB 15, 656 - Erstausgabe, erschienen im Selbstverlag des Verfassers. Magirus (1824 - 1895), Kommandant der Ulmer freiwilligen Feuerwehr, bemühte sich um fortschrittliches Feuerwehrgerät, insbesondere Feuerwehrleitern, die technisch gut und billig sein sollten, damit auch kleine Feuerwehren sie anschaffen konnten. Seine wichtigsten Erfindungen und Neuentwicklungen waren 1847 eine verbesserte Hakenleiter, 1864 der selbsttätige Fallhaken und 1872 die sogenannte "Ulmer Leiter" (NDB). Die Tafeln zeigen Spritzenwagen, Feuerhaken, Handspritzen, Schutzanzüge, Steiggeräte, Rettungseinrichtungen usw. Tafel 10 zeigt die Rettung einer Bibliothek mittels Abwurf durch eine Segeltuchröhre.
