Fores's Sporting Scraps. Plate 6. Coursing

London: Messrs. Fores, 29 May 1850. Four aquatint engravings on one plate, coloured by hand, by J. Harris. 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (each aquatint). French wash-line mat, black and gold frame. A fine example of Fores's excellent series, with images after one of the greatest British sporting artists. According to Siltzer the series was completed with eight plates (each with four images): one on racing, three on hunting, one on steeple- chasing and one on coursing. Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became an artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture (a miniature portrait) at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced an unending stream of paintings, drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s.... To many, sporting art is 'Alken', and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.75-76). Siltzer p.65

A British Schooner off Government House and Fort Macquarie, Sydney

Sydney,: circa, 1850.. Watercolour on paper, 290 x 455 mm., framed. Frederick Garling (1806 - 1873) arrived in Sydney as a young boy in 1815. By 1827 Garling was working as a customs officer and a marine artist painting the ships of Port Jackson that came his way each working day.In 1829 at St. Phillip's church Sydney he married Elizabeth, daughter of Lieutenant Ward of the 1st. Regiment, Frederick and Elizabeth had eleven children.Garling's paintings are often suffused with a soft misty quality and this picture shows to the right of a British schooner under full sail the early multi storeyed warehouses of The Rocks whilst to the left can be seen Government House and Fort Macquarie.Fort Macquarie, on the east point of Bennelong Point was built 1817- 1821 under the governorship of Lachlan Macquarie by the first colonial architect, Francis Greenway. Demolished in the early 20th century the site is now where the Sydney Opera House stands. Government House is a Gothic Revival building designed in England by an architect who never visited Sydney, Edmund Blore. It was constructed in 1837-45 and was and still is the home of many New South Wales governors.A fine and luminous painting by an imaginative and romantic painter steeped in the daily hustle and bustle of Sydney's busy harbour.

Album of 55 exquisitely colored lithographs and watercolor drawings in the style of Pompeiian frescoes

[Italian?], c 1850 - A superb collection of lovely lithographed images which, in many instances are so delicately and minutely colored as to be indistinguishable from watercolor drawings - and indeed, several of them we believe to be entirely original drawings - each in the style of the ancient art of Pompeii in its frescoes, geometric mosaics, and ceramics. There are scenes of mythological figures (e.g., a satyr cavorting with a goat); scenes of purely decorative nature, suggestive of Pompeian vase art against a black gloss background; domestic scenes of husband, wife, and children; cupids; pastoral scenes; fish and game; and several images of an openly erotic nature suggestive of the relaxed style of Pompeiian attitudes toward nudity (POMPEII) Folio. Each plate (8-1/2 x 10-1/2, and smaller) is tipped to a larger sheet; two are entirely uncolored, another only partially. Bound together in three quarter red morocco by Pawson & Nicholson, Philadelphia, with their ticket. Rebacked in goatskin, original spine laid down, inner hinges reinforced with period cloth [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Octavo, 8 pp. advertisements, 56 pp. text, large folding map; preliminary leaves and advertisements thumbed, some browning of the fore-edge and a little localised staining of the last two leaves, yet a good copy overall in attractive half green morocco by Sangorski, spine gilt. Scarce early history of the settlement, collecting and publishing important primary documents related to the Canterbury Association with a modest desire to 'form a chapter of the res gestae of the great heroic work of Colonization'.The preamble states this Papers 'are intended to supply the public with information as to the principles, objects, plans and proceedings of the Canterbury Association for founding a settlement in New Zealand...it is intended to append such extracts from printed books, pamphlets, and papers, bearing directly on the same subjects, as have not appeared in a collective form; and, lastly, to publish such original essays, statements, discussions, and extracts from private letters, papers and memoranda, as may throw light in any way on the nature of the Settlement, or the means available for its formation and success.''The Canterbury Papers were published at intervals between February 1850 and May 1852. This is the First collected edition of Morton's anatomical works, comprising The Surgical Anatomy of the Perinaeum; the Groin; the Thigh; the Popliteal Region; the Hip Joint; Inguinal Herniae; the Testis and it's Coverings; the Head and Neck; the Axilla; the Bend of the Elbow and the Radial and Ulnar Arteries of the Wrist. These were issued separately between 1838 and 1845. This collected edition was issued after Morton's death.         Hudson River School landscape painting

Ca. 1850.. A Hudson River panorama, unsigned, with a steamboat in the near ground and sailboats in the distance, the foreground a rugged shoreline scene with trees. Possibly inspired by the Hudson Highlands, with some rather exaggerated mountain profiles meeting the shoreline. Painted on canvas and applied to the reverse side of convex glass, a manufacturing process which is a lost art. There is a six inch hairline crack in the glass and some slight faint damage in the skyline of the canvas. Overall a charming landscape framed in a period frame.

Eighteen brilliantly hand-colored plates, with possibly one plate missing, of well-known monuments and views in and around Florence, including Tower of Pisa and the Duomo in Siena. The set is notable for the sheer richness of the color, and this copy is extremely clean and bright, except the last plate, which groups together the best known monuments of Tuscany, has one stain about a half inch in diameter marring the blue sky but not affecting the buildings or monuments depicted, and the same plate has a minor margin closed tear. Still very scarce, with only one copy located on OCLC, this copy being at the Bibliotheque National de France. Bound in a modern green cloth, with the original title of the wraps it had come in mostly preserved and mounted onto the front board. This preserved cover is stained where a piece of tape had once run over a tear, and it is cut into something of a rhombus shape.

        ACCOMMODATION BILL

1850 - PHILLIPS, Watts. AN ACCOMMODATION BILL. Drawn by Watts Phillips, which he trusts will be accepted by the public. [London]: D. Bogue, [n.d., circa 1850]. First edition. 18 leaves of plates, accordion fold, in the original illustrated paper boards. 5 1/2 by 3 7/8 in. (13.7 x 9.8 cm). Covers have a touch of rubbing and edgewear, and some general light soiling, else a fine and quite pleasing copy. Title information is taken from the illustrated cover. The story is a satire relating the trials of trying to recover a loan made to a friend; the back cover, showing a fly caught in a spider's web, provides a graphic summation of the tale. Watts Phillips (1825-1874) was the only pupil of George Cruikshank. He was an early contributor to Punch, and the founder of the short-lived periodical Journal for Laughter. He gradually abandoned caricature and illustration for success as a dramatist and, less successfully, as a novelist. (D.N.B.; Houfe, Dict. of Brit. Bk. Illus. & Caric.).
