Archive of 38 documents, including letters, manuscript charts, printed documents etc., relating to the Moorsom System of calculating cargo capacity in ships and the British Association for the Advancement of Science's efforts to improve it

1850 - Moorsom System. Archive of 38 documents, including letters, manuscript charts, printed documents etc., relating to the Moorsom System of calculating cargo capacity in ships and the British Association for the Advancement of Science's efforts to improve it. 1850-57. Some dust-soiling, minor tears, one document heavily creased and frayed, but overall very good. Calendar of the collection included. A unique maritime archive recording some of the events surrounding the introduction in 1854 of the Moorsom System for calculating tonnage. Named for its creator George Moorsom (1796-1867), the Moorsom System established a new method of calculating the cargo capacity (tonnage) of British ships as a basis for assessing harbor fees and taxes. Previous methods of calculating tonnage had been intended to determine the carrying capacity of sailing ships, using a formula based on a ship's length and maximum beam (width). Such methods could not be used on the new steam-powered ships, however, since they did not take into account the significant amount of internal space taken up by a steamship's boilers, fuel and machinery. In 1849 the British government appointed a Tonnage Commission to study the problem, with Moorsom, a naval architect, serving as the Commission's secretary. In the Commission's report Moorsom introduced a new unit of tonnage measurement, 100 cubit feet, as well as new rules for calculating a steamship's net tonnage, in which the space given over to machinery and other non-revenue producing functions was subtracted from its overall internal volume. The British government initially chose not to adopt the Commission's report, but Moorsom, refusing to give up on his system, "subsequently took up the matter alone, and by his skill and untiring energy succeeded in establishing the present rule of tonnage, known as 'Moorsom's Rule'" (obituary of Moorsom in Transactions of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects 8 [1867]: xxxi). Moorsom's efforts are represented by two items in this archive: His pamphlet titled A Mode Proposed for Determining the Register Tonnage of Merchant Shipping [1851], and his accompanying presentation letter to Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot (1803-90), an influential Member of Parliament, in which Moorsom gave a detailed critique of a rival tonnage system proposed by Board of Trade president Henry Labouchere (1798-1869): ". . . I have to confess that the late Commission having adopted the principle of Displacement, on External Measurement, as a basis for Tonnage, which you represented to Mr. Labouchere as inapplicable to Merchant Shipping, was a mistake on its part . . . Being, however, subsequently made aware that a ship is generally full before being immersed to her load draught, and could therefore carry more had she more internal space, I became convinced that the profits of the ship being, thereby, in proportion, generally speaking, to the Internal Capacity, that capacity must be the proper basis for assessment. This being admitted, the objections to External Measurement become fully substantiated. . ." The British Government eventually adopted Moorsom's system as part of the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854. The system was not without its problems, however, and in August 1856 the British Association for the Advancement of Science appointed a committee "to inquire into the defects of the present methods, and to frame more perfect rules for the measurement and registrations of ships and of marine engine power, in order that a correct and uniform principle of estimating the actual carrying capabilities and working power of steam ships may be adopted." The bulk of our archive relates to the activities of this committee, which presented its 67-page report to the BAAS in August 1857. Much of the archive consists of correspondence to and from members of the BAAS committee, which was made up of eminent British shipbuilders, engineers, naval architects and naval officers. Represented here are naval architect John

        IN MEMORIAM

London: Edward Moxon, 1850. Called by Hayward and most others the FIRST EDITION (though called the Second Edition by Tinker, as it followed a privately circulated issue), this an early state (see below). This is a beautifully bound copy of the famous elegiac poem written as a tribute to Tennyson's college friend, Arthur Henry Hallam (1811-33), son of the famous historian Henry Hallam (1777-1859). Tennyson's first verses had been published before he was 20, but after Hallam's death, he published nothing for nine years, although all the while he was working on this poem, the product of protracted meditation. Written in rhyming quatrains, the poem moves from grief and doubt to certainty that the universe is purposeful. It was a sensational best-seller, striking a deep note of resonance with Victorian readers and the queen herself, who told the poet that "Next to the Bible, 'In Memoriam' is my comfort." Thomson says that the work "has been discussed from every point of view--proof of the profound influence it exercised over English thought for half a century." The work had major repercussions in Tennyson's professional and personal lives. It inspired Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, to petition that its author be named Poet Laureate of the realm, to succeed the recently deceased Wordsworth. And it left Tennyson financially secure enough to enter the married life, a step that had been delayed for 10 years for pecuniary reasons. Our copy is an early state with two errors later corrected: p. 2, line 13 reads "And gazing on the sullen tree" rather than "And gazing on thee, sullen tree"; p. 198, line 3 has "baseness" in place of "bareness." The superbly executed binding is unsigned, but the high-quality materials and workmanship would indicate a leading bindery. Given the work's American provenance, it was perhaps done by someone like Matthews, the Club Bindery, or an artisan who trained in one of those workshops. Former owner Frank Babbott (1854-1933) was an American businessman, collector, and patron of the arts. He edited the poetry anthology, "Classic English Odes from Spenser to Tennyson." It is baffling that this binding is not signed: it is probably the most beautiful, elaborately decorated, and skillfully executed unsigned binding we have ever owned.. 174 x 108 mm. (6 7/8 x 4 1/4"). vii, [i], 210 pp. Called by Hayward and most others the FIRST EDITION (though called the Second Edition by Tinker, as it followed a privately circulated issue), this an early state (see below). EXTREMELY FINE CONTEMPORARY DARK BROWN MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT IN THE FANFARE STYLE, covers with inlaid tan morocco strapwork frame creating oval and geometric compartments tooled with sprays of laurel leaves, large central oval with title and initials of Tennyson and Hallam, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with inlaid central oval enclosed by gilt laurel leaves and small tools, gilt titling, SCARLET MOROCCO DOUBLURES AND ENDLEAVES, doublures with gilt laurel wreath at center, that at front inscribed "In Memoriam / A. H. H. / obit MDCCCXXXIII," leafy sprays at corners, top edge gilt. In a suede-lined brown marbled paper slipcase. Front flyleaf with engraved bookplate of Frank L. Babbott. Thomson 18; Hayward 246; Tinker 2066; Grolier English 89; Ashley Library VII, 117-18; Lowndes IV, 2604. Spine evenly sunned to light brown, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, the text clean, fresh, and bright with very ample margins, the binding unworn and shining with gold.         A Defence of Fugitive Slaves: Against the Acts of Congress of February 12, 1793, and September 18, 1850

Bela Marsh, Boston 1850 - Book starts off with the four-page Act of Congress and Amendment, separately paginated and preceding the title. Lysander Spooner (1808-1897) was a social activist, anarchist, attorney and outspoken abolitionist who wrote pamphlets throughout his life attacking slavery. This specific document ,argued repeatedly that neither the US Constitution nor either of the Acts of Congress of 1793 and 1850 supported slavery and therefore the people could not be charged with violating the Fugitive Slave Acts. From 1845 he actively campaigned against slavery, writing and publishing several pamphlets proving that the text of the US Constitution did not support slavery. He is also fondly remembered as the "Father of Cheap Postage in America". He started his own company, the American Letter Mail Company as a protest to end the US Postal Office monopoly on the mail. 73 pages complete. Front cover is detached and water stained but the text is not affected. Chipped around the edges. Same stain appears on the first few pages The entire text block is dis- bound. It was originally held together by threads in three places. Top edge seems to be chewed upon. Again. Not affecting the text what so ever. See photos. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1850. "The Miserable Matter-Product of Ineffable Ingratitude and Profligacy" Warren, Samuel [1807-1877]. A Letter to the Queen on a Late Court Martial. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood & Sons/William Benning & Co., 1850. xiii, 262 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Warren, an attorney and legal reformer, is best known as the author of Ten Thousand A-Year (1841), a satirical novel about English law. A Letter to the Queen is an ardent defense of Capt. George Douglas, who was accused on lying to a fellow office. Warren withdrew it from the market shortly after its publication. Warren inscribed our copy to his son, Samuel Lilckendy Warren on September 13, 1858. His detailed inscription expresses his embarrassment from this case. At the top of the title Warren has written: "Withdrawn from circulation-the reasons are explained on the back of this page. N.B. Every line of the proofs was carefully corrected by Lord Brougham.... I have the original proofs still by me." Warren was indignant at the perceived injustice and procedural flaws in his trial. This opinion was shared by Lord Brougham, who addressed the House of Lords about this case. As indicated by Warren's inscription, his work benefited from Brougham's advice and editorial assistance. Shortly after the publication of A Letter, "all was ruined by the infamous conduct of Mr. Douglas in eloping from Cheltanham with the daughter of a gentleman who wrote me in anguish & horror, that it was this letter of mine which gained Mr. Douglas admission to the house which he had desecrated. The news nearly broke my heart.... All my six months gratuitous labour & anxiety, my sacrifice of an entire long vacation, my expence in printing, publishing and adorning this "Letter"--my having risked the enmity of the Duke of Wellington & many other persons (including the Queen)--all thrown away in one moment by the profligate act of one I had done so much to serve...." Warren goes on to relate further embarrassment, the c.

St. Louis, MO, (N. R. Cormany), 1850. - 8vo. 200 pp. Contemporary red marbled boards. Sole German edition of this political and economical manifesto by John Pickering (1777-1846) from Massachusetts, equally appreciated as a lawyer and as a linguist. The English original ("The working man’s political economy, founded upon the principle of immutable justice, and the inalienable rights of man; designed for the promotor of national reform") was published posthumously in 1847, a year after Pickering’s death, which fact may have contributed to the unremarkable impact the work had at the time. More than a century later it enjoyed a modest revival when it was reprinted in the series "American labor from conspiracy to collective bargaining" in 1971. The German translation has remained even more obscure and cannot be traced bibliographically or in the trade; library catalogues list a single copy (Duke University Library). - Browned and brownstained (the title page more so), but well preserved. Cf. Kress C 7178 (only the English original). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - "Dutch ideal landscape" original oil painting on cardboard approx.19x27cm; bottom right signed; around 1850 [Dimensions of the leaf-gilt wooden frame made by the Munich professional workshop Petzenhammer 26x34cm.] Bd., S. 300ff.).
