Household Words, 1850-1859 19 Volumes Complete, Hard Times

      - This is a complete 19 Volume set of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS" - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens. The volumes span the years 1850 (Volume I) to 1859 (Volume XIX). The significance of this set is that Volume IX contains the 1st appearance of the Dickens classic "HARD TIMES" (please see photos). "Hard Times was first published serially in "Household Words" in the April 1, 1854 issue (volume IX), followed shortly thereafter by the 1st edition in book form in the same year. Seldom found complete in 19 Volumes. "Household Words" was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens and was published every Saturday from March 1850 to May 1859. This set contains 19 hardcover volumes which contain the complete run of individual issues. To boost slumping sales, Dickens serialized his classic novel "Hard Times" in weekly parts between April 1st and August 12th 1854. It had the desired effect, more than doubling the journal's circulation and encouraging Dickens, who remarked that he was "three parts mad, and the fourth delirious, with perpetual rushing at Hard Times." Condition: Overall the set is in terrific condition with only light wear as would be expected. The most notable condition flaw with this set is that the front cover of Volume III is present, but detached; also, there is a 1" area on the spine of volumes III and XVI where the leather has flaked off (please see photo #1).otherwise the set is in great condition with only expected wear. The pages are in overall excellent condition with only occasional foxing. Some volumes have a name written in pen on the front end paper. The volumes are tightly bound. Partial crack at front hinge of Volume XI.no other cracks found. The set has a light musty odor. Overall a great condition complete set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Personal History of David Copperfield

Bradbury & Evans 1850 - 20 vols. in 19, a serialization sequentially published over 1 1/2 years. 1st edition, 1st issue, in the original monthly parts, preceding all other editions, and read the next sentence deliberately, because the distressing phrase you inevitably see is "almost every" while the happy phrase you are about to see is "each and every." This set conforms to each and every point in Hatton & Cleaver (all erratum, the correct covers, all ads, all samples, and all 40 inserted plates by H. K. Browne, including the frontispiece and vignette title). And perfection is important in a Dickens parts serialization because later ads are the telltale sign of later issue, in many cases months later, so do not discount comprehensiveness as mere frill, or turn your back on it the way you would on a drunk woman, haphazardly seated nearby at a dinner party, who relentlessly keeps insisting that you name your favorite Powerpuff Girl. Original wrappers, neat repairs to backstrips, light wear at edges, else a very good set (the old-fashioned very good), infrequently offered for sale so clean, complete, upright and intact, a stirring combination of quality, magnitude, precedence, and inclusiveness. Full dark blue morocco case. Collation: Octavo (8 1/8" X 5 9/16"). [i-vii] viii [ix] x-xii [xiii] xiv [xv-xvi], [1], 2-624. Reference: Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 253-272. Eckel, pp. 75-77. Raising his game, at the height of his powers, Dickens explores writing in the first person and achieves the great novel of initiation, finding the ideal balance between the bustling energy of his early works and the mature sense of design exhibited here for the first time. The plotline is pierced by an unsettling exposé of the treatment inflicted on Victorian children, and this is buttressed by poignant statements about the terrors and torments of youth coming of age, most of which apply in any era, and successfully concluding his quest, the novel ends with a glimpse of the grown man. Dickens began to write it as pure autobiography, but he found the naked facts too personal, accordingly, many of the events are drawn from his personal experiences, but many more are fictionalized from his keen reconnaissance of life. However, Micawber can be no other than Dickens' father, and there is no doubt that David Copperfield is Dickens himself. And knowing that he had laid the needle against the redline pin on the great-ometer, he openly stated, more than once, that Copperfield was his favorite from among all his books.         The Prelude, or Growth of a Poet's Mind; An Autobiographical Poem

Edward Moxon, London 1850 - x, 374, [1] p. 22 cm. Burgundy leather binding with gold impressing, signed by Winstanley, Manchester. All edges gilt. Light wear to extremeties. A little foxing to first and last pages. Ink inscription on a front endpaper. The Prelude is an extremely personal and revealing work about the details of Wordsworth's life. The poet began the work in 1798 at the age of 28 and continued to work on it throughout his life. He never gave it a title but his letters to his sister Dorothy refer to it as "the poem on the growth of my own mind." The poem was unknown to the general public until published three months after Wordsworth's death in 1850, its final name given to it by his widow Mary. The Prelude is widely regarded as Wordsworth's greatest work. The publisher Edward Moxon (1801 – 1858) was significant in Victorian literature and William Wordsworth entrusted him with the publication of his works from 1835 onwards. This book has a very simple title page for a book published at the peak of a prosperous Victorian publisher's career, but the attractive binding by Winstanley makes up for the austere interior. The Winstanleys were a family of Victorian bookbinders active in Manchester, England until about 1881. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

FUGITIVE SLAVE CASE. DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE SOUTHERN DIVISION OF IOWA. BURLINGTON, JUNE TERM, 1850. RUEL DAGGS, VS. ELIHU FRAZIER, ET ALS. TRESPASS ON THE CASE

Burlington, Ia, 1850. 40pp. Original printed wrappers, rear lacking, removed from a bound volume. Later institutional ink stamps on titlepage, contemporary ownership inscription on front wrap. An occasional fox mark. Good plus. A scarce account of civil suit brought in an Iowa federal court over the issue of nine slaves escaped across the border from Missouri. Elihu Frazier, an anti-slavery Quaker, and several others, had assisted the slaves in escaping the ownership of Ruel Daggs. When Daggs could not recover his slaves through the employment of slave catchers, by intimidation via a large posse of angry Missourians, or through criminal prosecution owing to an unsympathetic judge, he lodged this suit. Eventually, four of the nine slaves ended up returned to Daggs' possession with the aid of pro-slavery elements in Iowa, and the defendants in this case were fined $2,900 in damages, although this was apparently never paid. "This pamphlet appears to be the only known record of this trial in the federal district court.... This was one of the last cases argued solely on the basis of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. It was also one of the few fugitive slave cases heard in Iowa. Because this case was not officially reported, this pamphlet presents unique information on the fugitive slave issue in this western border state" - Finkelman. COHEN 11847. FINKELMAN, pp.79-80. SABIN 18270.
