EDO KIRI E ZU: ILLUSTRATED SECTIONAL MAPS OF EDO. 2 volume set. These maps are found & listed in both vol. 1 and 2 of this set. We have elected to follow the numbering found in volume one, which shows some 31 maps in all. There has always been a variation as to the exact count of the sections of old Edo, and this work shows both versions and lists each section's name. Entirely hand-printed from color woodblocks on hand-made Washi paper. This type of maps quite beautifully done and is remarkably handsome. * CONDITION/VARIANTS: An exceptionally clean example of this quite SCARCE map. Our copy has the text above the map, while his 1850 example shows this to the left of the, most likely a variant selected by the person who glued the four sheets together. Some other examples of this map have been found without the text. *** Place names are profuse, locating and identifying a substantial number of cities and other major geographical features, continents, oceans, islands, cities, including China's Great Wall. The meridians and numbers are clearly located. * RARITY: Japanese world maps are quite rare, and the double hemispheric format is by and large the rarest and most desirable type. A handsome and quite RARE World Map, suitable for framing & display. * Japan was very late in world mapping, and this map is considered "early" in Japanese world cartography. A rare copy of the earlier Kurihara world map projection. Beautifully executed in woodblock printing using pastel colors, with decorated border cartouche that shows mythological animals in the pattern. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID-19TH CENTURY, pp.232-3, plate # 107. Oda cites & illustrates the ca. 1850 edition, per his text p.75, where he cites the 1835 & 1838 editions. Ours shows a slight variance to his, but is clearly the same map. * Color scans can be sent by email.         [Antigua] Original watercolour drawing, inscribed 'Entrance into / English Harbour / Antigua / taken from / Fort Charlotte / 4 July 1850"

Antigua, West Indies, 1850. Watercolour on paper, inscribed lower left. Sheet size: 9 7/8 x 13 3/4 inches. A beautiful and historically important image of the entrance to English Harbour (looking inland with a glimpse of Falmouth Harbour beyond) viewed from Fort Charlotte. According to William R. O'Byrne's A naval biographical dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent on board a 'contract Mail steam-vessel'. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London hold two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982. As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York Public Library collection, and is described by Deak). Cf. Deák 525; cf. Martyn Gregory Galley "Lieutenant Walford Thomas Bellairs R.N. ... Admiralty agent and ... artist in the Far East" (London: 1982); cf. Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK10620; cf.         [Grenada] Original signed pencil and wash drawing of The Carenage, St. George's, Grenada

Grenada, West Indies, 1850. Pencil and wash on paper, signed in ink lower right 'W.T. Bellairs R.N.', inscribed in pencil on verso 'Caranage [sic.] Grenada / July 50 / W T. Bellairs' verso. (Pin holes, neat repairs to two tears to lower margins). Sheet size: 6 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches. An important view of the inner harbour of St. George's, Grenada: the name 'Carenage' recalls a time when this calm, protected bay was where wooden ships were periodically 'careened' or beached to allow for the cleaning of barnacles from the hull. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in about 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York public library collection, and is described by Deak).       1850. Mixed method mezzotint and engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on fine india paper mounted on thick white wove as issued. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 1/8 x 7 inches. This is a wonderful proof impression of this lovely oval portrait of General Lafayette, the great American sympathizer. Lafayette's actions during the American Revolution earned him a place in America's pantheon of heroes. Joining the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, he was one of the first Frenchman to come to America's aid. Through his valiant commitment to the American cause, Lafayette became a close associate of Washington's, and he helped negotiate French aid for the rebellion. He was voted a major general at the age of 20 by the Continental Congress, and his actions at the battle of Yorktown helped corner the British forces, leading to their surrender. Returning to France, he became involved in Revolution, making him, ultimately, a hero in his own country and in the New World. In 1824, as the United States approached its 50th anniversary, President Monroe invited General Lafayette to return to America. He enjoyed a hero's welcome and toured the 24 states in triumph. Lafayette had a great love for the United States, a sentiment which is best expressed in his eloquent words to Henry Laurens, the Congressional President; "The moment I heard of America I loved her; the moment I knew she was fighting for freedom I burnt with a desire of bleeding for her; and the moment I shall be able to serve her, at any time, or in any part of the world, will be the happiest of my life". Through his involvement in the American and French revolutions Lafayette became a symbol of the ideals of liberty and release from tyranny. Lafayette's veneration for the United States was so strong that when he returned to France, he took with him a plot of American soil, within which he was buried.

Chart of the Bay of San Pablo Straits of Carquines and part of the Bay of San Francisco California by ... Ringgold assisited by Simon F. Blunt ... Projected, constructed & drawn by Fred. D. Stuart ... assisted by A.H. Campbell

Washington, D.C., 1850. Lithographic map, by C.B. Graham from Ringgold's survey. Sheet size: 31 1/8 x 21 5/16 inches. In good condition, on later backing paper with a number of small repaired marginal tears. Rare unfolded thick paper issue of this important early chart of San Francisco bay and its environs by the 'Gold Rush Surveyor' (A.F. Houston) This rare separately issued map sheet is one of the results of a series of surveys carried out under Cadwalader Ringgold's leadership between August 1849 and June 1850. The California gold rush had brought home the fact that there was an urgent need for accurate charts of the route from the Golden Gate up river to Sacramento and beyond to the area around Sutter's Fort on the American River. The local government and business community moved quickly: the San Francisco newspaper Alta California (20 June 1849) noted that 'A subscription is on foot among our business men to survey and buoy the Suisun bay and the Sacramento river between the port and Sacramento city. Captain Ringgold, USN, has been employed to make the survey, and there is every prospect that it will be speedily accomplished' The results of the survey were published in Ringgold's A series of charts, with sailing directions, embracing surveys of the Farallones, entrance to the bay of San Francisco, bays of San Francisco and San Pablo, straits of Carquines and Suisun Bay, confluence and deltic branches of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and the Sacramento River (with the middle fork) to the American River, including the cities of Sacramento and Boston, State of California. (Washington: J.T. Towers, 1851), with the charts, folded and printed on thin paper. The present example is from the rare series of charts printed on thick paper, unfolded and intended for use on board the vessels wishing to make the hazardous journey up river to Sacramento. Cf.         Map of the City of New York

New York: Published by the Surveyor William Perris 93 William Street [copyright registered in 1850 by Perris & Hutchinson], 1850. Wall map on two sheets joined, lithographed by Mayer & Korffs, contemporary hand-colouring. Large inset view of the city from Governor's Island, 8 lists of references, ornamental border. (Backed onto archival linen and edged with burgundy silk). A very rare mid-19th century large-scale map of New York published to be hung in the city's fire stations. The map extends from the tip of Manhattan as far north as 42nd Street. The general key lists 24 different symbols used to identify churches, schools, hotels, places of amusement, public buildings, newspaper offices, parks, cemeteries, etc. The New York and Harlem Railroad runs down Fourth Avenue while the Hudson River Railroad approaches via Tenth Avenue and West Street. Numerous individual sites are marked and indexed under various lists of references: "Places of Amusement" (American Museum, Broadway Theatre, Chinese Museum, etc.); "Public Buildings etc." (City Hall, Hall of Records, Croton Aqueduct department, Prison, etc.); "Colleges, Universities and Literary, Scientific and Benevolent Institutions" (Columbia College, American Art Union, Home for the Friendless, etc); "Banks" (American Exchange, Bank of New York, Bank of America, etc.); "Markets" (Washington, Fulton, etc.); "Hotels (Delmonicos', Tammany Hall, Carlton House, etc); "Churches" (Reformed Dutch, Friends, Jews, Unitarian, etc.) and "Public Grounds" (The Battery, Union Square, Madison Square, etc). Of particular interest is a hachured line marking in the river adjacent to the Battery depicting the boundary of the 'Proposed Enlargement' - i.e. present-day Battery Park. However, the most important element of this map is its association with fire fighting in New York. The locations of each of the city's engine, hose and hook-and-ladder houses are shown and the city is clearly divided into eight numbered fire districts via bold red lines. By the end of the first half of the 19th century, as the city of New York entered a time of industrial development and rapid population growth, the frequency of devastating fires had escalated. "The rivalry which had always existed between the crews of the various engines had, year by year, grown more intense, and when the fire alarm brought them out, it was almost certain that there would be a collision, ending in blows, and often in a free fight" (Stokes, III:p. 559). The many volunteer companies in the city all responded to the same alarm, regardless of the location of the fire. Concurrently, the more frequent use of horse-drawn steam engines (as opposed to hand pumps pulled by a team of men) racing through the city yielded numerous accidents, with several fatalities. These two factors prompted the Common Council in 1850 to propose dividing the city into eight fire districts, with specific alarm bells indicating the district location of the fire, and with only the fire companies in those and the neighboring districts allowed to respond. This ordinance was passed and approved by the Mayor on 25 November 1850, with the ordinance to take effect on the 1st of January 1851. That very same year engineer and surveyor William Perris began working on a comprehensive series of fire insurance maps of New York. "George T. Hope is generally credited with having fostered the idea of specialized and detailed fire insurance maps in the United States. Around 1850 Hope, who was at the time secretary of the Jefferson Insurance Company, began to compile a large-scale map of a portion of New York City for use in calculating fire risks. He engaged William Perris, an engineer trained in England, to make the surveys. To ensure that the proposed map would include all essential information, Hope formed a committee of fire insurance officials to direct the project" (Ristow). Perris's series of maps would be published between 1852 and 1855 in seven volumes, and have the distinction of being the first fire insurance maps of the city. The present wall map, however, precedes the publication of those maps. While the exact publication history of this map is unknown, it seems likely given Hope and Perris's association with the city's fire officials, that when the ordinance to divide the city into fire districts was passed, this map of the city which clearly depicts those divisions was proposed. The only contemporary reference to this map is in the minutes of the Common Council for 10 December 1850, wherein it is ordered that 150 copies of Perris's map be purchased and that a copy "be furnished to each engine, hose, and hook-and-ladder company" (quoted in Stokes). It is unlikely that many more copies of this wall map were published, and given the seal of the city in the cartouche, the dedication to the Mayor and Common Council, and the date of 1850-51 (spanning the time between the passage of the ordinance and its taking effect), that this map was effectively underwritten by the Common Council for use in the city's fire stations. This map is a significant rarity. It is unrecorded in any of the usual references on the mapping of New York and OCLC locates only a single example in the New York Public Library.

Richmond Hill, Grenada. Original signed pencil and wash drawing, titled in pencil 'Richmond Hill Grenada July 1850'

Grenada, West Indies, 1850. Pencil and wash on paper, signed in ink lower right 'W.T. Bellairs R.N.', inscribed in pencil at top of image. Sheet size: 7 x 10 3/4 inches. An important view from the harbour of St. George's, Grenada, looking inland with the peak of Richmond Hill framed against the skyline According to William R. O'Byrne's A naval biographical dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. Hog Hunting. The Tired Pig

London: Published by Messr. Fores, 41 Piccadilly, 1850. Colour-printed aquatint, finished by hand, by Messrs. Fores. Sheet size: 27 7/8 x 36 1/4 inches. An extremely rare aquatint depicting hog hunting in India. During the nineteenth century, field sports, particularly the hunting of wild game, were a common colonial leisure activity in India and Africa. Big-game hunting was considered the most thrilling and dangerous pursuit but hog hunting was also a favorite pastime for sporting Englishmen in the colonies. This superb image depicts an exciting hog hunt in India. A group of young Englishmen, all identified by name in the title space, are eagerly involved in chasing a wild boar across a grassy plain. This is one of a series of four large aquatint plates after Captain Platt, all with the general title 'Hog Hunting'. They were also issued separately (as here) and are all extremely rare and not often seen on the market. This is one of the finest images of English sportsmen in India. "John Platt, b. 1802, son of the Reverend Alexander Platt, was a Captain of the Native Infantry in India at the time he painted this set of Hog Hunting. He served in India from the age of eighteen, took part in the China War [First Opium War] in 1842 and was promoted Lt. Col. in 1853. His record shows him to have been a soldier of action with several decorations. He died on 1st July 1857, tragicallly murdered by mutineers from his own regiment."         Original detailed architectural technical-drawing of the construction of archways, titled 'Planchers Combles Feuille III'

[Paris, 1850. Pencil, pen and wash drawing, with numerous sub-titles in ink, signed "J. Litoux" A fascinating and beautiful architectural drawing - or 'rendu' of basic elements of house construction in cluding walls, floors, doorways, roofs and ceilings. A fine drawing from an architectural student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the most influential architectural school in existence during much of the 18th century, the whole of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century. 'Students were eligible for the Ecole if they were at least fifteen years old, or under thirty. They began with the seconde classe , in which they competed in the concours d'émulation . These alternated between an esquisse - a rough sketch for which up to twelve hours was allowed - and a rendu - the large-scale finished drawing for which one to three months were allowed... Two to four years were usually required for a student to accumulate enough credits to enter the première classe . The same system was followed again, usually for two to three years, after which the student should have accumulated enough credits to compete for the Grand Prix de Rome. The winner of the Grand Prix was entitled to five years study under the auspices of the French Academy in Rome... For each of his first three years he was required to submit an analytical study of an ancient monument. For his fourth year he had to submit a complete reconstruction of a major classical work. For his fifth year he was required to submit an original work designed to a program of his own invention... In the seconde classe the student was required to attend a variety of lectures in theory, history, and construction, and learned to prepare construction drawings... Work was done at ateliers located outside the precincts of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. These were rented and organized by the students themselves, and the students had the right to invite a teacher of their own choice to serve as their maître . The teacher himself did not have to be a member of the faculty of the Ecole, nor - at least in principle - did he have to be a practicing architect.' (Arthur Drexler. The Architecture of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. New York, MoMA, 1977, p.8-9) Arthur Drexler, The Architecture of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts . New York, MoMA, 1977.

Collection d'Esquisses des principaux articles de décoration exécutés en papier peint dans la manufacture de Jean Zuber et Compagnie à Rixheim près Mulhausen, dept. du haut-Rhin

[Mulhouse, Alsace, France: Engelmann père & fils for Jean Zuber, 1850. Folio. (19 1/4 x 14 inches). Lithographed throughout: uncoloured title, 73 images by Engelmann after P.A. Mongin, J.J. Déltil, J.M. Gué, Zippélius, Ehrmann, Fuchs and others on 41 sheets (15 sheets with fine contemporary hand-colouring, 4 of these heightened with gum arabic, including two images in both coloured and uncoloured state). (The final sheet cut dwon and loosely inserted, the 4th and 5th torn with marginal paper loss not affecting the images, the 8th sheet torn in half with neat old repair). Contemporary French blue reversed leather-backed blue/green paper-covered boards, upper cover with red morocco label panelled and lettered in gilt, extremities rubbed Provenance: H. Cresch (early inscription "H. Cresch / sellier / Masevaux") A magnificent album: an iconography of the work of the greatest of all the 19th-century producers of 'papier peints', and a spectacular example of the lithographer's art. Despite its large format and exuberant use of high-quality hand-colouring, the present album was designed as no more than a sample book to be used by salesmen or agents of Alsace-based producers of wall and ceiling treatments: Jean Zuber et Cie. The heavy usage such albums usually received has ensured that they are now much rarer than many of their pampered drawing-room contemporaries: the Grand Tour views of Rome or Paris survived into the 20th century in huge numbers, albums such as these did not. After ten years learning his trade, Jean Zuber, the founder of the company, began manufacturing under his own name in 1802. He employing a number of artists: P. A. Mongin can be said to have set the style for the firm, working for Jean Zuber & Cie. up until 1825. The popularity of Mongin's designs can be judged by the fact that a number of them were still being offered for sale in the present album produced about 25 years after he stopped working for the firm. J.J. Deltil succeeded to the mantle of chief designer and the spectacular three sheet panorama "Vues du l'Amerique du Nord" (1834) is one of the better known designs of his that is in the album: - the panorama of New York City, West Point, Boston, Virginia and Niagara Falls is here seen on two uncoloured and one coloured sheet, the 32 sheet full-sized work so delighted Jackie Kennedy that she had it installed in the "grand salon ovale de la Maison-Blanche" (according to Le Monde du Papier Peint , p. 113). Deltil was also responsible for the "Vues du Brésil" (1830) and the "Décor Chinois" (1832). It is however the image of a section of "El Dorado" which enables us to date the album to the middle of the century, since it was not produced until 1848, a date confirmed by the "Conquete de Mexique" which purports to show scenes from the war of 1846-1848. In addition to the examples of papier peint there are numerous plates showing designs for decorative papers for a variety of other schemes, including faux panelling (in a variety of styles), ceilings, ceiling roses, chimney breasts, etc. Some of these are designed to reproduce plaster, some woodwork, and some again fabric, but all are of the highest quality with particular attention paid to the fine detail: as is to be expected from an album printed by Engelmann and intended to sell wall-paper that is on a much larger scale. The individual plates are titled as follows: 1. Devant de Cheminées (4 images - 2 "framed") 2. Devant de Cheminées Echelle de 3 Pieds (4 images) 3. [Devant de Cheminées] (4 images - 2 "framed") 4. [Devant de Cheminées] (4 "framed" images) 5. [Devant de Cheminées] (5 images - 2 "framed") 6. Sujets en hauteur (6 images) 7. Sujets de fleurs et de chasse (7 images) 8.
