MINERS WEIGHING THEIR GOLD [upper caption title] THE DREAM OF A PROSPECTING MINER [lower caption title]

San Francisco: Lith. & published by Quirot & Co., 1850. Some edge wear, including small tears, as well as light wrinkling. A few old ink smudges on the conjugate leaf. Very good. An evocative and relatively scarce California pictorial letter sheet, giving two views of life in the gold diggings. The upper illustration shows three miners seated around a table made of wooden planks supported by tree branches. The miner in the center is weighing gold on a scale over a pan. The miners who flank him are both armed, one with a knife and the other with a pistol. Another pistol, as well as a rifle, lays on the table. The table also holds bottles, plates, a pair of horseshoes, and a large loaf of bread, which from its well-developed crumb structure appears to be a loaf of sourdough. The lower illustration shows the same miner who was weighing his gold laid out asleep under a tree near a fire. Beside him are guns, a powder horn, a knife, and a satchel, and a large bag (filled with gold?) rests under his right elbow. The three dream bubbles above him show scenes of a miner prospecting, and a ship being loaded with heavy bags. A nice California pictorial letter sheet, showing the reality and the dreams of life in the mines. BAIRD, CALIFORNIA'S PICTORIAL LETTER SHEETS 170. CLIFFORD LETTER SHEET COLLECTION 190. PETERS, CALIFORNIA ON STONE, p.76 & plate 33 (the Britton & Rey version).

Orations and speeches [1845-1850] (2 volume set)

Boston,: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 2 volume set. 410 pp. + vii, 482 pp. 19 cm. Clipped autograph signature of Charles Sumner (USS) opposite title page. Bound in publisher's blind stamped brown cloth. Gold lettering. Hardcover. Some wear to cover, spine head/tail frayed. Chip missing from top corner of Vol. I spine. Clean, unmarked pages. Charles Sumner was the noted Massachusetts abolitionist Senator. This work collects Sumner's most important speeches against slavery, the Mexican-American War, and for "free soil" made before joining the US Senate. In a horrific episode in 1856, while giving a speech denouncing slavery in Kansas, Sumner was savagely beaten by Sen. Preston Brooks of South Carolina. Sabin 93668. A short quote from this work: "Slavery is wrong... As it is our perpetual duty to oppose wrong, so must we oppose Slavery; nor can we ever relax in this opposition so long as the giant evil continues any where." Vol. 2, p. 410. Interesting provenance: Early signature of Albert G. Browne, 1850 (Massachusetts). (Also owned by his son Albert G. Browne Jr.) Albert Gallatin Browne served the US treasury during the Civil War in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Browne was tasked with seizing Confederate arms and supplies and then subsequently overseeing trade and commerce for occupied Southern territories. His son, Albert G. Browne, Jr. subsequently owned this book. Browne Jr. served as a war correspondent for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune (Mormon - Utah War / Civil War). Both Brownes were noted abolitionists and admirers of Sumner. (Browne Jr. was forced to flee Boston in 1854 after freeing an escaped black slave, Anthony Burns.) For more information on Browne, please see Harvard Magazine's article, William MacKinnon, "Albert Gallatin Browne Jr. Brief life of an early war correspondent: 1832-1891." November-December 2008. Later, lovely Maine, Kin O'Ktaadn bookplate of Walter Francis Kimball. This work includes related genealogical ephemera about the Brownes. (Browne's papers are at Harvard.)

California Sketches, with Recollections of the Gold Mines

[Joel Munsell, Printers, Albany, for] Erastus H. Pease & Co, Albany 1850 - (8 1/8 x 4 7/8 inches). 57pp. Publisher's ad on verso of the upper wrapper. Publisher's lettered wrappers Provenance: Josiah Markle (period signature on upper wrapper) First edition of a scarce account of Gold Rush-era California. Leonard Kip's work includes excellent first hand descriptions of San Francisco, Stockton, mining camps, and life in the diggings around the Mokelumne River area. His companions, however, suffered from dysentery, scurvy, low provisions, and little success, and consequently, his impressions of California are a touch gloomy. Predicting a bleak future for the state once the gold ran out, he writes: "It will readily be conceived that California can present few inducements to the settler." According to the introductory notice, these recollections "were intended for one of the daily papers, but the friend to whom they were sent (in the absence of the author), has assumed the responsibility of publishing them in this form, for the benefit of those who are meditating a voyage to the El Dorado of the West." His older brother, William Ingram Kip, went on to become a major figure there as the first Episcopalian Bishop of California in 1853. Scarce.         A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America

London: Richard & John E. Taylor for the Author, 1850. Folio. (21 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches). 1p. list of subscribers. 32 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates after Gould and H. C. Richter. Early half olive green morocco over green pebbled cloth covered boards, bound for Sotheran's, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges A fine copy of the first edition of Gould's fourth monograph, in which he considerably enlarged the number of recorded species of the American partridge family.Besides the spectacular plates of American birds, this work is interesting for the light it throws on the all encompassing nature of science before specialization: Gould was inspired by the gift of an English Arctic explorer, received much useful information from a Scottish botanist and finally dedicated the work to the French ornithologist Prince Charles Lucien Bonaparte (1803-1857) the author of American Ornithology . In this, Gould's fourth monograph, he considerably enlarged the number of recorded species of the American partridge family. Gould was persuaded to undertake this project "by the sight of the beautiful Callipepla Californica, presented to the Zoological Society of London by Captain Beechey, in 1830. The graceful actions and elegant deportment of these birds inspired me with a desire to become thoroughly acquainted with the entire group of which they form a part; this desire was even strengthened by the details furnished to me by the late celebrated traveller and botanist, Mr. David Douglas, respecting species seen by him in California, of the existence of which we had until then no idea ... In the course of my researches I have several times visited most of the public and many of the private collections of Europe, and have besides corresponded with various persons in America: the result is that I have had the pleasure of extending our knowledge of the group from eleven to no less than thirty-five species" (Preface).         [INDIAN WARRIORS RIDING AWAY FROM CAMP, AN AMERICAN FORT IN THE NEAR DISTANCE]

1850. American carved and gilded wood frame. Fine condition. An action-filled image of Indian life near an American Army fort (inscribed "Fort Pierre" lower right) along the Missouri River, this fine oil painting of a large party of heavily armed and war-painted braves riding out of their camp past their squaws and dogs, is similar to the style of the important frontier painter, Carl Wimar, but also shows the stylistic influences of other notable artists of the American West such as Seth Eastman, Anton Schonborn, and Alfred Jacob Miller. The German-born Wimar based himself in St. Louis, which he used as a springboard for sketching trips through present-day Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. "He translated these [sketches] into paintings that authentically and powerfully depict Indian life....His dramatic portrayals of the conflict between native Americans and pioneers helped to establish many of the myths of the American West that prevail to this day" - Ron Tyler. A handsome painting showing the upper Missouri in the fur trade era. Rick Stewart, CARL WIMAR: CHRONICLER OF THE MISSOURI RIVER FRONTIER (Amon Carter Museum, 1991), passim.         San'iku zensho [trans.: Complete Book on Obstetrics].

Numerous illus. in the text. 12 volumes (complete). 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Tokyo & other places: 1850. First edition and a complete set of this finely illustrated book; the most comprehensive work on obstetrics published in Japan before the arrival of Admiral Perry and Western influences. "In 1850 Sansetsu or Gihaku Mizuhara (1782-1864), whose real given name was Yoshihiro, published his definitive work on obstetrics entitled San'iku zensho (sometimes referred to as Jyunsei-an san'iku zensho) in 11 volumes [actually 12 volumes], divided into three sections plus an appendix volume. The first section [Gaihen; trans.: External Care], comprising the first seven volumes, was on general obstetrics with text and illustrations describing placentation, monsters, the use of massage in obstetrics, obstetrical examination per vagina and per rectum, (primitive) positions for delivery, preparation of the patient for delivery, and post-partum care of the mother. There is an interesting illustration showing the Japanese equivalent of the 'birth-stools' (obstetrical chairs) in common use in medieval Europe... "The second section [Naihen: tangen zuketsu; trans.: Internal Care: Illustrated Usages of Obstetrical Forceps], comprising volumes 8 to 10, was an amplification of Mizuhara's earlier atlas, the Sanka zushiki (1837), and described additional obstetrical instruments with illustrations showing them in use. Of special interest was an ingenious mechanical contrivance for the forceful extraction of the fetus if it got 'stuck,' and an illustration of that device which replaced, so to speak, the physician who prior to the development of that infernal machine had often found it necessary to lay on the floor and pull with all his might in the opposite direction whilst pushing with his bare feet planted squarely against the buttocks of the patient with her thighs abducted and externally rotated and her knees in flexion. A series of illustrations in this section of San'iku zensho showed the progressive events or stages in the birth of a baby presenting the feet first, one of these drawings being the original of that chosen by Dr. Ruhräh to illustrate his translation of Fujikawa's history of medicine in Japan. The management of the placenta was shown... "Volume 11 [Shikenho; trans.: Prescriptions used in Practice] forms all of the third section and treated entirely of prescriptions, in particular those found useful in obstetrical practice... "The fourth part [Vol. 12] was in the form of an appendix [Betsu fouroku inki zuhen; trans.: Addenda of Illustrations], with illustrations of female sex anatomy, innervation of the pelvic region, structure, and blood supply of the placenta, and the visceral connections of the umbilical cord in the newborn. San'iku zensho was one of the last Japanese obstetrical writings produced in the period following the 'reforms' instituted by Genetsu and Genteki Kagawa, and is probably the most representative treatise -- certainly it was the most comprehensive -- on the state of obstetrics in Japan prior to the reopening of that country to Western influences."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, II, pp. 498-99. Occasional minor worming, touching text and illustrations from time to time but a fine and fresh set. .

Rue St. Denis: Godillot Père et Fils, Rue St. Denis, 1850. Some wear to the margins, wrappers chipped, yet in very good condition, now housed in a finely crafted folding case.. Oblong portfolio of nine lithographed sheets (six vibrantly coloured by hand) preserved in the original delicate lithographed wrappers; each sheet measures 300 x 455 mm. A beautiful, rare and precious catalogue of the articles a traveller may desire for voyaging elegantly and safely. The album features superb full page hand-coloured lithographs showcasing nearly one hundred accessories including bags, picnic baskets, apparel, wonderful old trunks, tents and hammocks, many of which are in surprisingly bold and modern designs. Alexis Godillot (1816-1893) was a contemporary of Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) and first achieved renown in Paris for his beautiful hand-made luggage. This catalogue comes from this very early period of his life before he had differentiated the left foot from the right and become the famous shoemaker who would go on to equip over one hundred thousand French soldiers for the Crimean War. Significantly, the catalogue includes an original detailed graphite sketch by Godillot that was lithographed for the album. It is an opulent hammock with an elegant canopy and drapes.

Narrative of the Wreck of the "Favorite" on the Island of Desolation: Detailing the Adventures, Sufferings and Privations of John Nunn; an Historical Account of the Island, and Its Whale and Seal Fisheries: With a Chart and Numerous Wood Engravings.

London: William Edward Painter, 1850 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition account of the shipwreck of John Nunn and others for 2 years on the 'Island of Desolation' - or Kerguelen Land. John Nunn was the real life model for Robinson Crusoe. This copy is complete with the rare folding chart of the islands and is profusely illustrated with images of the sailors, and wild life. Much detail on whale and seal hunting. It is in the original blue decorative cloth binding with blind stamped decoration to boards. It has had an expert cloth case repair to reback the spine so it is sound and tight. There is a small piece missing from the original spine at the top, so the gilt titles are not complete, but the gilt illustration of the Favorite is present. Internally, the original endpapers are present, having been repaired - there are a couple of small dark marks to the top edge of the rear endpapers. Contents generally clean and bright - there is the odd mark or spot. The folding chart is clean and bright with a very small tear (1 cm) where it is attached to the book. With the original note to subscribers tipped in.

Consequences of a Successfull French Invasion.

      J. Gillray, nd., c., London 1850 - Engraving, 370 x 270 mm., handcoloured as issued; framed. A famous, satirical look at the decision of the English parliament to create a penal settlement at Botany Bay, in contrast to the atmosphere of reform and concern with civil liberties in the newly created republic of France and in the American colonies. This cartoon was first published in 1798; it was reissued in the mid nineteenth century as offered here.James Gillray turns the tables on the politicians of the House of Commons responsible for the Botany Bay decision: French revolutionaries led by Napoleon storm the parliament gagging the Speaker and placing all the Members in chains and dressing them in the garb of convicts. All the symbols of House are destroyed: the mace is smashed, the statutes discarded on the floor, and below the Speaker's chair are the words, "The House is adjourned to Botany Bay".This is the significantly later impression of the print, first issued at the close of the eighteenth century, circa 1798.

Lake Como [and:] Lake Maggiore

Italy, 1850. Pair of views, gouache over faint etched line, black gouache border. Period gilt and faux bois frames. Two splendid, panoramic views of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore Catering to the foreigners flocking to the region on The Grand Tour, this pair of hand-painted prints beautifully depict the famed, picturesque lakes, with rich bands of blue highlighting the water and sky, with the surrounding hills and mountains dotted with luxurious villas. In the view of Lake Maggiore, we see from a very high vantage point the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori, with their extraordinary gardens. The view of Lake Como looks north up the lake towards Switzerland from above Bellagio, which occupies the point at which the lake divides in two. The paintings are clearly intended as a pair, the images being almost identical in size with matching black painted margins. The twenty four uniformly excellent plates include twelve topographical views after Barbot of Egyptian sights and cities from Philae to Cairo, ancient and modern, all peopled and bustling with life. Alexandre Bida's contribution consists of twelve beautifully-observed character studies of the people he encountered in the region: an Albanian, a Copt, dancers, ladies, a donkey driver, a groom, etc. Bida, studied under Eugene Delacroix, and travelled extensively through Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine. "E. Barbot" is Prosper Barbot (1798-1878), a pupil of Jules Coignet and Louis Watelet, who made two journeys to Egypt in 1844 and 1846 travelling from Cairo south across the desert. Colas I.326; Chadenat 761 ("Tres belle album non mis dans le commerce."); Lipperheide I, Ma32.
