The Expedition for the Survey of the Rivers Euphrates and Tigris,

London: Longman, Brown, Green. and Longmans,, 1850. carried on by order of the British government, in the years 1835, 1836 and 1837; preceded by geographical and historical notices of the regions situated between the rivers Nile and Indus. In four volumes [sic]. With fourteen maps and charts, and embellished with ninety-seven plates, besides numerous wood-cuts. 2 volumes, octavo (242 × 153 mm). Recent dark red crushed half morocco, raised bands to spines forming compartments ruled and lettered in gilt, red cloth sides ruled in gilt, edges speckled blue. Without the map slipcase. Lithographic frontispiece to both volumes (vol. I folding), 47 lithographic plates (all but one with tissue guard), 25 wood-engravings to the text; vol. I with folding table facing p. 62, 2 double-page folding genealogical tables, cloth-backed folding lithographic colour to rear, opening to approx. 700 × 900 mm. Lacking the map slipcase as often. Ink-stamp of Glasgow Philosophical Society to frontispiece versos and title-pages. Faint spotting to frontispieces and margins of a few other plates (slightly heavier on nos. XXVIII and XLII) with frontispiece vol. I split along section of fold to no loss, tape-repair to upper outer corner vol. I sig. 2N6 not affecting text, small hole to gutter of first folding table to minimal loss, the very occasional marginal spot as often. A very good copy. First edition. During the first half of the 19th century the British government and the East India Company were much concerned with "the interconnected problems of the 'sick' Ottoman empire, the Russian threat to the Near and Middle East and India, and improving communications with India by using steam power" (ODNB). Chesney, an army officer from County Down, had carried out a preliminary survey of the Euphrates in 1831, though his movement was curtailed by local instability in the river's uppermost reaches. He returned in February 1835 with a professional team of seamen, naval and army officers and engineers, and despite difficult conditions, including the sinking of one of two steamships with the loss of twenty lives, Chesney was able to prove his hypothesis that "the Euphrates was navigable for steam vessels from a point about 120 miles from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf; he believed he had shown how short and rapid a route this would prove to India, and had confirmed his previous views about the tractability of the local Arab tribes Â… In Britain and India some considered the expedition had been an expensive failure: Chesney denied this. [He] continued to advocate the Euphrates route. He was elected FRS (February 1834) and FRGS, and in 1838 was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society" (idem). His richly illustrated account "includes minute surveys of the history, geography and geology of the area traversed" (Blackmer). Only two of a projected four volumes were published as Chesney lost half of his manuscript on the way to China, which also accounts for the odd numbering the plates (97 were intended for the full work of which only 49 were printed, not in numerical order); the slipcase containing thirteen folding maps, lacking in this copy, is rare.

- Beiliegend 9 eigenh. As issued with double folded lvs bound in fukuro-toji style in original pictorial paper wrappers printed in colour, silk strings. A complete set of the Aino Fairy Tales translated by Chamberlain and illustrated with charming and descriptive pictures by Japanese artists. Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935), professor of Japanese at the Tokyo Imperial University, lived among the Ainos in Northern Hokkaido in the mid 1880's. He was particulary interested in their folklore which he thought often explained certain natural phenomenon at a very early stage. "The Ainos are people who live in an island called Yezo. The men all have long black beards, and they spend their time in hunting and fishing. They are very poor and very ignorant; yet even these poor people love their children. Often of an evening, when they all sit around the fire together before going to bed, the mothers tell their little ones pretty fairy-tales and fables. I have listened to some of these, and am now going to tell them to you in English, because they are new stories, which you have never heard before" (Preface). A pristine copy of this very rare set of Aino fables, even individually copies are uncommon on the market. Cordier BJ 641. Nipponalia 2279 (no.1)

[American, 1850. Fifteen watercolors total, heightened with gum arabic, ranging in size from 2 x 2 inches, to 7 x 6 inches. The illustrations are bordered either by lace or gilt and affixed to colored paper, or are done on a sheet with a lithographic border. Interleaved with blank colored pages, some of them with stamped or lithographic borders. Quarto. Original morocco album, elaborately stamped in blind and gilt, expertly rebacked in matching style, a.e.g. A bit of light rubbing to extremities of boards, corners worn. Internally clean, with the colors very bright. Near fine. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise. A lovely album of quite accomplished amateur watercolors depicting plants, flowers, fruit, and a bird. The style of the album binding is American, as are some of the tree leaves illustrated, but neither the album nor any of the illustrations are signed. It is evidently the work of a talented amateur, skilled in the use of watercolors. Each illustration has been carefully highlighted with gum arabic in order to heighten certain colors or shades. Among the images is a bouquet of autumnal oak leaves, a branch of plums, a group of cherries, a rose, pansies, and several other plants and flowers. One of the largest and most striking illustrations is of a bird perched upon a leafy branch with blue coloring on its head and back, brown feathers at the tips of its wings, and a white belly. A very appealing example of the mid-Victorian fashion for creating personal albums of artistic renderings of nature.

Five Years of a Hunter's Life in the far Interior of South Africa. With notices of the native tribes, and anecdotes of the chase of the lion, elephant, hippopotamus, giraffe, rhinoceros, &c. By Roualeyn Gordon Cumming.

London: John Murray 1850 - XV, (1), 386; X, 370 Seiten. Mit 2 Schwarzweiß-Frontispices, 2 gestochenen Titeln, 14 weiteren Schwarzweiß-Illustrationen unter Hemdchen und 1 Landkarte im Anhang zu Band 1. 2 volumes (= complete) in first edition and scarce original gilted cloth binding. - Gordon-Cumming (1820–1866) was a Scottish traveller and sportsman, who was known as the "lion hunter". During his stay in the East he laid the foundation of his collection of hunting trophies and specimens of natural history. Later he set out with an ox wagon and a few native followers for the interior of Africa and hunted chiefly in Bechuanaland and the valley of the Limpopo River. The story of his exploits is very vividly told in this opus, which was received at first with incredulity by stay-at-home critics. But David Livingstone wrote: 'I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Cumming's book conveys a truthful idea of South African hunting' (Missionary Travels, chap. vii.). His collection of hunting trophies was exhibited in London in 1851 at the Great Exhibition and was afterwards, known as "The South Africa Museum", exhibited in various parts of the United Kingdom. (For the informations about Gordon-Cumming compare with the relevant article of Wikipedia.) - This copy is in original gilted cloth with very noble figural vignets to covers and spines. - Spines rubbed and sligthly spotted, edges bumped and dusted.

Reimer, Berlin 1850 - Octavo pamphlet, folding plate, comprising a single issue of the journal, the Gillsen account on pp. 272-94; an unopened copy in the original printed lime-green wrappers. The first detailed abstract of the Vasil'ev/Shishmarev voyage published outside Russia, based on the extremely rare Russian original published two years previous in 1849. The companion expedition of Bellingshausen is now well-known for the dearth of contemporary published material, and this Arctic voyage was not served any better. In 1819 the Russian Admiralty undertook a double polar expedition under Bellingshausen/Lazarev (Antarctic) and Vasil'ev/Shishmarev (Arctic). The sloop Otkrytie (Discovery) was under the command of M.N. Vasil'ev, while the sloop Blagonamerennyi (Good Intent) was under the command of G.S. Shishmarew. Leaving Kronstadt in 1819 the expedition reached Port Jackson via Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope. The two ships sailed north to Kamchatka, mapping Nukufetau Atoll en route, and naming the "Inseln des Blagonamerennyi". The ships spent some time on both shores of the Bering Sea, and particularly explored Otkrytie Island (Nunivak). Heavy pack ice beyond the Bering Strait stopped the expedition from their planned work in the deeper reaches of the Chukchi Sea. No official report was published, and the only eyewitness account from either ship was written by the midshipman of the Blagonamerennyi, Karl Karlovitch Gillsen, and published in the St. Petersburg journal Otechestvennyie Zapiski in 1849.This German translation of Gillsen's account is the first European translation of a work that was not translated into English until 1983 (Rhea Josphson, Ethnohistory in the Arctic). The title translates as "Expedition of the Sloop Blagonamjerenny to explore the Asiatic and American shores beyond the Bering-Strait in the years 1819 to 1822", and the work made the 1849 St. Petersburg publication available for the first time to a wider European audience. On the Russian expeditions see: Barratt, The Russians and Australia, pp. 87ff & Russia in Pacific Waters, pp. 201-2; Howgego II, R34, T3.         The Prelude,

London: Edward Moxon,, 1850. Or, Growth of a Poet's Mind; an autobiographical poem. Octavo (215 x 136 mm). Contemporary green morocco for Sotheran & Co., flat bands gilt to spine forming compartments richly gilt with floral sprays, title to second and date to foot gilt, concentric gilt frames to covers incorporating an attractive floral roll forming a central panel lobed with elaborate floral vignettes gilt, all edges gilt, inner dentelles gilt, comb-marbled endpapers. Two 20th-century ownership inscriptions to first blank. Extremities lightly rubbed. An excellent copy in a fine binding. First edition of Wordsworth's autobiographical testament, begun during otherwise unfruitful visit to Germany with Coleridge in the winter of 1798 but only published after his death. "As he chronicled his life up to 1798 Wordsworth re-examined his political, religious, and aesthetic convictions and expanded the poem's scope so majestically that when it was completed in 1805 it had grown from two to thirteen books. It is Wordsworth's masterpiece, but as it was conceived throughout as a prelude to a greater work, The Recluse, so long as Wordsworth remained committed to the project for the philosophical poem, the autobiographical one had to remain unpublished. It was Wordsworth's widow and executors in 1850 who called it The Prelude. In Wordsworth's lifetime it was always known as 'The Poem to Coleridge' or 'Growth of a Poet's Mind'" (ODNB).

[Hardcover / fest gebunden]. 2 volumes (= complete) in first edition and scarce original gilted cloth binding. - Gordon-Cumming (1820–1866) was a Scottish traveller and sportsman, who was known as the \"lion hunter\". But David Livingstone wrote: \'I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Cumming\'s book conveys a truthful idea of South African hunting\' (Missionary Travels, chap. vii.). His collection of hunting trophies was exhibited in London in 1851 at the Great Exhibition and was afterwards, known as \"The South Africa Museum\", exhibited in various parts of the United Kingdom. (For the informations about Gordon-Cumming compare with the relevant article of Wikipedia.) - This copy is in original gilted cloth with very noble figural vignets to covers and spines. - Spines rubbed and sligthly spotted, edges bumped and dusted. Covers very slightly stained. - Hinges (slightly) splitted. - Pages in parts slightly spotted. - Many precious illustrations of animals in black and white, in parts seperated with protective parchment paper; some protective papers removed. - Very clean and good copy.

Mexico: Tipo. de R. Rafael 8vo. 16 pp.. 1850 The author of this very scarce pamphlet identifies himself as a retired medical doctor who at the time of its writing was about to leave for England. He tells how to diagnose cholera, explains his "rational" method for curing it (based on methods used successfully in England, the United States, and parts of Europe), and gives suggestions for easing recuperation. At the end of the work he gives the composition of the various medicines and tonics he prescribes, because "detest[o] por mi parte el monopolio que algunos han hecho de sus medicamentos a fin de lucrar a costa de la humanidad doliente." Cholera became a serious problem in Mexico City and in several other places in the country in the wake of the Mexican–American War. Dr. Duck says of his reasons for writing this opusculum of medical advice, "solo me ha impulsado el deseo que tengo de auxiliar a una Nacion que me es querida." Very rare. Fine condition; sewn in original cream-colored printed wrappers with elaborate, ornamental borders on both covers. Wrappers very lightly soiled; a clean, untattered copy.

        The Scarlet Letter.

Boston: Ticknor, Reed and Fields, 1850. First edition, with 4 pages publisher's advertisements inserted between preliminary blanks, dated March 1, 1850. Octavo, original brown cloth. One of only 2500 copies printed. A very good example with to the extremities, rebacked with some rubbing to the bottom of the cloth and short splits along front joint. "The most memorable and original aspect of The Scarlet Letter lies in Hawthorne's portrait of Hester Prynne, who has been described as "the first true heroine of American fiction", a woman whose experience evokes the biblical fate of Eve. Hawthorne's achievement is to make her passion noble, her defiance heartbreaking and her frailty inspiring. She becomes the archetype of the free-thinking American woman grappling with herself and her sexuality in a cold, patriarchal society" (The Guardian). The first edition of The Scarlet Letter sold out in ten days and "made Hawthorne's fame, changed his fortune and gave to our literature its first symbolic novel a year before the appearance of Melville's Moby-Dick" (Bradley).

Fatout Editeur 1850 ca., Paris - In 8 oblungo, album contenente 26 tavoleÂcompreso il frontespizio inc. all'acquaf. FRA

Consequences of a Successfull French Invasion..

London: J. Gillray, nd., c., 1850. Engraving, 370 x 270 mm., handcoloured as issued; framed. A famous, satirical look at the decision of the English parliament to create a penal settlement at Botany Bay, in contrast to the atmosphere of reform and concern with civil liberties in the newly created republic of France and in the American colonies. This cartoon was first published in 1798; it was reissued in the mid nineteenth century as offered here.James Gillray turns the tables on the politicians of the House of Commons responsible for the Botany Bay decision: French revolutionaries led by Napoleon storm the parliament gagging the Speaker and placing all the Members in chains and dressing them in the garb of convicts. All the symbols of House are destroyed: the mace is smashed, the statutes discarded on the floor, and below the Speaker's chair are the words, "The House is adjourned to Botany Bay".This is the significantly later impression of the print, first issued at the close of the eighteenth century, circa 1798.

HIROOKA, Haruki, Size with case 22.5x17.5x1.1. cms, 17 pages, two figures, weight: 65 grams, fine bookcase, book somewhat wrinkled but otherwise in fine condition, probably printed in early XIX century. Description: Typical Japanese style blue cloth case with ivory clasps. The text is the Japanese translation of an unknown work about Christopher Columbus, with two illustrations, printed in woodblock on hand made Japanese paper, [8] biography sheets folded twice [16] relating the life discoverer of America. The two figures show Columbus receiving gifts from american "Indians" . The second shows Columbus landing on a beach, wearing full regalia, with hat and sword, a flag carrier is in the background, as well as a small boat manned by Spaniards, as Columbus greets some "Indians" carrying long spears and wearing feathers on their heads. They seem dumbfound by the tallness of Columbus. Furthermore two shy “Indian” women are seating behind This is an extremely rare Japanese book since knowledge of the West, and naturally of Columbus, was practically non-existent in Japan: For 300 years Their only contact with the outside world was through Portuguese and Dutch merchants, their cartography was also far behind, in spite of the globe of the earth that the Dutch had in Nagasaki in 1600. This work was absolutely 'News' for the Japanese, who were introduced to Western culture and ideas only in the XIX century Further images may be sent on request on internet Satisfaction guaranteed.
