        Autograph letter signed. N. p., 22. III. 1850.

1850. Large 4to. 2¼ pp. on double leaf. To an American friend, expressing her willingness to encourage and support the Hungarian revolutionaries, who had left Hungary after the Revolution of 1848 frequently injured and destitute. She praises their courage and moral values, and affirms the importance of the liberal attitude and America's support for Europe in this period: "Les soupirs qui proviennent d'une respiration libérée servent le bien-être de ceux qui en sont les auteurs [...] [...]

Leipzig; Philipp Reclam, o.J. (ca. 1850). Elfte Auflage. 874 S. und 936 S. Orig.-Halblederbände. Einbände berieben; Band 2 Lederrücken löse (liegt bei); Seiten gebräunt u. tlw. fleckig. - Zweiter Band in zwölfter Auflage. GREGORY'S GUIDE FOR CALIFORNIA TRAVELLERS; VIA THE ISTHMUS OF PANAMA

New York & St. Louis, 1850. 9pp. Original self wrappers bound into modern library paper boards, cloth backstrip. Short tear to front board, two bookplates. Minor dust-soiling to text. Very good. In a half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. The Hershel V. Jones - Daniel Volkmann copy of this exceedingly rare example of the California guide, a genre of literature birthed by the California gold craze. "These singular compositions, known as 'guides,' were as frequently constructed by those who had not been in California as those who had. The contents were taken from all possible sources, with little regard to accuracy. Travels, geographical works, antiquated articles in encyclopedias, government reports, letters, verbal narratives - anything to secure a sufficient amount of material to form a book. As the object was their sale, all were more or less highly colored, and occasional flashes of intelligence veiled the poverty of their limitations…With their defects, however, these works form one of the most interesting features of Californian literature" - Cowan. Joseph Gregory is identified as the proprietor of Gregory's California and New York Express on the titlepage, one of the more successful early entreperneurs in the express business to California. In addition to offering practical advice about travel and money, GREGORY'S GUIDE also brims with medical advice. "The writer outlines the route and mode of travel from New York to San Francisco by way of the Isthmus, indicating necessary costs, desirable supplies, etc." - Jones. This short guide is typically found with a reprint of the California constitution as pages [11]-46, hence the pagination in Howes; however, H.V. Jones notes only five leaves, as in the present copy. The Jones copy was sold by the Rosenbach Company in 1940 for $135. This copy is the first original edition of this great California rarity handled by this firm; previously, we have only sold a copy of the 1949 limited edition reprint from the Book Club of California. COWAN I, pp.99-100. COWAN II, pp.249-250. HOWES G407, "aa." JONES ADVENTURES 254. JONES CHECKLIST 1241. SABIN 28744n.

Lettre autographe signée ("Juliette"). S. l., 1 mars [1850] vendredi après midi.

1850. 4 pp. in-8.

1850 Zachary Taylor's Book of Common Prayer

An exceptional rarity, a Book of Common Prayer presented to Zachary Taylor during the short time he was a sitting president. The book was published in New York by Harper and Brothers, bearing no publication date. It is bound in fine, lightly-grained pebbled leather with a gilt cross on the cover, raised hubs on the spine, and elaborate embossed gilt decoration on spine and covers. A printed presentation appears on the front pastedown, gilt printing on pebbled leather identical to that used on the cover. It reads: "Presented to Zachary Taylor president of the United States by the New York Bible & Common Prayer Book Society January 1ST 1850." Cracked at front gutter, else fine condition. Although Taylor was born into an Episcopalian family and his wife was a devout Episcopalian, he never officially became a communicant of that church, or any other church. Books from Taylor's library are very rare indeed. From the collection of Dr. John Lattimer.

1850s Manuscript Love Poetry with Artwork

Undated, this is a beautiful early Victorian Manuscript book of period Love Poetry, each poem is accompanied with delightful finely executed original artwork, both paintings and drawings, unfortunately there is no indication as to authorship or date, the date being estimated here based on the ladies fashions as depicted in the pictures, there are fifty poems, one of which is lacking the artwork, the art for the book has only been loosely fixed in by using cut slits in the books pages to insert them, so it is actually quite lucky that only one picture has got lost over the years, bound in an embossed patterned full leather binding with later leather spine with gilded page edges, measuring 7.25 inches by 4.5 inches approx., a beautifully hand crafted work, the poems being written in fine calligraphy, each started with an illuminated letter, there has been some offsetting of the ink to opposing pictures of a few pages, a few mild marks else in nice condition. a stunningly beautiful early Victorian manuscript book, that will be a delight to own and treasure.

1850. Small folio. (4), 300 pp. With hand-coloured engr. frontispiece and 15 hand-coloured engr. plates with laced edges and tissue guards. Original giltstamped red cloth. All edges gilt. First edition. - Charming work of French fashion illustration, also depicting acessoires, jewels, and flower decorations. The 16 steel engravings are by Geoffroy, based on drawings by the much-sought Gavarni (1804-66), and depict "studies of beautiful women, fashionably attired for the most part, which were drawn in London. Méry wrote the 'fantasy' accompanying them to fit Gavarni's designs" (Ray). - This is the "appealing [...] special edition in which the steel engravings are printed and delicately colored on paper with borders cut to various lace patterns. So presented, Gavarni's designs become fashion plates of the first order" (ibid.). Another similarly designed volume was published that same year, a fact pointed at by the series title "Perles et Parues". - Slight foxing; tiny defects to spine-ends. Hungarian library stamp.         Prince Albert.

Artist: Permassion; issued in: ca 1850 - - technic: Copper print- Aquatinta ; colorit: colored ; condition: Stains outer margins ; size in cm : 49 x 32 - description: Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emmanuel, later The Prince Consort(1819 Ð 1861) was the husband of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He was born in the Saxon duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld to a family connected to many of Europe's ruling monarchs. At the age of 20 he married his first cousin, Queen Victoria, with whom he would ultimately have nine children. At first, Albert felt constrained by his position as consort, which did not confer any power or duties upon him. Over time he adopted many public causes, such as educational reform and a worldwide abolition of slavery, and took on the responsibilities of running the Queen's household, estates and office. He was heavily involved with the organisation of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Albert aided in the development of Britain's constitutional monarchy by persuading his wife to show less partisanship in her dealings with ParliamentÑalthough he actively disagreed with the interventionist foreign policy pursued during Lord Palmerston's tenure as Foreign Secretary. He died at the early age of 42, plunging the Queen into a deep mourning that lasted for the rest of her life. Upon Queen Victoria's death in 1901, their eldest son, Edward VII, succeeded as the first British monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, named after the ducal house to which Albert belonged.Albert involved himself in promoting many public educational institutions. Chiefly at meetings in connection with these he spoke of the need for better schooling.[82] A collection of his speeches was published in 1857. Recognised as a supporter of education and technological progress, he was invited to speak at scientific meetings, such as the memorable address he delivered as president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science when it met at Aberdeen in 1859.His espousal of science spawned opposition from the Church. His proposal of a knighthood for Charles Darwin, after the publication of On the Origin of Species, was rejected

        Thier-Studien. In Kupfer gestochen. Original-Abzüge um 1800.

Stuttgart, E. Fischhaber, um 1850. - Groß-4to (ca. 33 : 27 cm). 8 Bl. Radierungen.

Paris, [printed by Auguste Bry], 1850-1851.

1850. Oblong folio (555 x 385 mm). Tinted lithographed title-page and 30 tinted lithographed plates (555 x 385 mm, one slightly smaller: 350 x 505 mm), all in fine contemp. hand colour. Loose in modern clamshell box. Extremely rare first edition of an impressive series of lithographed views showing the zinc mines, foundries and factories in Belgium and Germany owned by the "Société Anonyme de Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille Montagne". The series includes views of Moresnet, Welkenraedt, Rabotraedt, Angleur, Saint Léonard (Liège), Valentin-Cocq and Bray, all beautifully rendered by the French landscape painter Adolphe Maugendre (1809-1895). The Vieille Montagne society was founded in 1837. Its history goes back to 1806, when Jean-Jacques Daniel Dony (1759-1819) was granted the sole mining rights to the calamine deposits of Vieille Montagne (or Altenberg), between Liège and Aachen. Dony had invented a new method for extracting zinc and casting it in ingots. In 1809 he established a rolling mill at Saint-Léonard, apparently the first plant for the industrial production of zinc. The series shows the complete process of producing zinc, from the zinc ore extraction to the stoking, pouring and refilling of the crucible, and finally the production of sheets of zinc in a rolling mill. It includes four detailed views of the Saint-Léonard plant (one, surprisingly, featuring a woman and two children). In the 20th century the Vieille Montagne society, together with a number of other mining and smelting companies, evolved into "Umicore", a global materials technology and recycling group still active today. A second edition was published in 1855 as Album des usines et etablissements de la société and is much less rare than the present first edition. - Some light marginal spotting, the title-page more severely, title-page with a tiny tear, otherwise in very good condition. An important visual record of the history of the zinc industry. WorldCat (only a catalogue entry, not listing any copies); no further copies in KVK. For Dony: Biographical Dictionary of the History of Technology, pp. 376-377; for Maugendre: Benezit VII, p. 273.

Album containing specimens of Turkish calligraphy, documents, watercolours, hand-coloured lithographs, and a dated photograph. Constantinople, Smyrna and other places, c. 1850.

1850. Folio (370 x 265 mm). Comprising 15 hand-coloured lithographs, 3 prints, 14 costume watercolours, and 16 documents, one calligraphic poem, and a photograph. With a few other unconnected pieces. Original giltstamped cloth titled "Scrapbook". A remarkable scrapbook evidently compiled in Turkey over a period of time, mainly the 1860s and 1870s. This album includes a number of prints from the well-known period lithographic series produced by the celebrated Smyrna printer Tatikian. The figures are notable for the naturalistic qualities which set them apart from the so many other stylised costume plates: "the drawings seem to be of real people, and are not idealized. Most of the plates depict the costume of the ordinary people of the Ottoman Empire, including a number from the region of Smyrna. [...] Tatikian produced these lithographs as separate items, much as postcards are produced today, and the customer purchased only those which interested him. Thus the contents of different collections vary" (Atabey). The figures here present include Sheikhs, public scribes, Albanian priests, an Armenian water carrier, Greek ladies, etc., mostly living in Smyrna. The photograph, showing a "Kiosk erected in the Sultan's Valley at Baicas for the Empress Eugenie to review the troops", is dated Oct. 1869. Other material in this fascinating and wide-ranging trove includes diplomatic passports, quarantine passes in Ottoman Turkish, lithographs of Sultan Abdul Medjid Khan and Sultan Abdul Aziz, an outstanding leaf of Arabic calligraphy, consisting of an epitaph on Mehmed Chelebi by the poet Sururi (with English interlinear translation), a watercolour of "Mohammet's ascent to Heaven on 'Borak'" (with the Prophet's face veiled), and assorted collected invitations and deeds, many in Hebrew (indeed, the collector of this scrapbook would seem to have moved much within the Jewish community of Smyrna), as well as a few specimens of East Asian art. - Some spotting, extremities rubbed. An uncommon collection. Cf. Atabey 1196f. Blackmer 1928.

Bocourt, Auguste Lorent, Paul Rouet, and Brénot, printed by Bouyer, Philippe, and Bastide, some with tissue-guards; illustrations and letterpress tables in the text; occasional light spotting or marking, some quires or plates a little browned; contemporary Algerian red, hard-grained morocco backed patterned boards with cloth tips by Bastide, Algiers, spines gilt in compartments, lettered directly in one, others panelled in blind, modern marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; extremities very lightly rubbed, atlas vol. skilfully rebacked to style, nonetheless a very good set.First edition. The French physician and traveller Guyon (1794-1870) was the Chief Surgeon of the French African Army, a member of the Commission scientifique pour l'exploration de l'Algérie, and the author of a number of books on the archaeology, natural history, and other aspects of North Africa, in addition to a number of medical works. Voyage d'Alger aux Ziban was a pictorial and literary record of Guyon's expedition to the province of Constantine in the north of Algeria to undertake a medical inspection, which also permitted him to travel in the province, and particularly to Ziban, the southern part. Guyon travelled with two other physicians, Auguste Lorent and Paul Rouet, who were intended to act as the expedition's artists, but illness meant that Rouet could only join the party at Batna. Therefore, Guyot recruited Aristide Verdalle, a young army doctor based at Biscara, and Verdalle was responsible for the images of Ziban in the atlas volume, while Lorent and Rouet, together with capitaine Brénot of the garrison at Batna, provided the images of Tell in the latter part of the atlas. The atlas volume was issued in 1850 and the accompanying text volume was published two years later, and sets of both volumes are uncommon on the market, particularly in a contemporary North African binding. This set retains its original binding by the Algerian bookseller, publisher, printer, and binder Bastide (who also printed some of the lithographic plates), and is signed with his ticket on the upper pastedown of the text volume. The Real Biblioteca in Madrid holds a set of the work, the text volume of which is in a very similar binding to that on this text volume, and bears Bastide's ticket on the upper pastedown; however, the atlas volume appears to be in a slightly different binding.

Lettre autographe signée. [Paris, février 1850].

1850. 1 page in-8.

Album showing Chinese military formations ["Five Stars and the Crescent"]. Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca. 1850.

1850. Folio (565 x 300 mm). With 9 large double-page hand-painted illustrations. Fan fold binding, crimson silk-covered wooden boards with the manuscript title (gilding faded) on front cover. Unique manuscript album in accordion format showing Chinese military formations and drills. "Five Stars and the Crescent" (moon) may refer to a constellation or pattern of stars imitated by a military manoeuvre. The album was produced by court artists of the Imperial Workshop during a time when the Chinese army was facing rapid decline, both in terms of discipline and in terms of competing with Western military techniques. Early during the Taiping Rebellion, Qing forces suffered a series of disastrous defeats culminating in the loss of the regional capital city of Nanjing in 1853. Shortly thereafter, a Taiping expeditionary force penetrated as far north as the suburbs of Tianjin in what was considered the Imperial heartlands. In desperation the Qing court ordered a Chinese mandarin, Zeng Guofan, to organise regional and village militias into a standing army called 'tuanlian' to contain the rebellion. Zeng Guofan's strategy was to rely on local gentries to raise a new type of military organisation from those provinces directly threatened by the Taiping rebels. This force, called the "Xiang Army", was a hybrid of local militia and standing army. In 1860 British and French forces in the Second Opium War captured Beijing and sacked the Summer Palace. The shaken court sought to modernise its military and industrial institutions by buying European technology. - The hand-written brush pen text for each illustration runs vertically to the top right side of each page as follows: "Drum is played on the general's stage and the bugle calls for the standing in line. Each captain of the five posts sees to the straightness of the line. Rules of the running array are followed. No one should talk and all should listen to the order. The line leader leads the mandarin-duck formation and then changes to a straight line". - Some wear to silk and boards, as commensurate with age. Minor repairs. Overall in very good condition.

Autograph letter signed ("F. Aden, Arabie Heureuse, 22. IX. 1850.

1850. 4 pp. on folded bifolium. On blue paper. 4to. Long, interesting and unpublished letter, closely written over four pages, to the French minister Gustav Armand Henri, Comte de Reiset (1821-1905). The twenty-five-year-old missionary, writing from the south-western tip of the Arabian peninsula, describes himself as "perdu au milieu des déserts et dont toute l'imagination est absorbée par l'étude des langues". The capucin friar travelled along the coast of the Red Sea, visiting Tor, Yambo, Medina and Jeddah; the settlements he encounters are wretched hamlets on the edge of the desert. Léon writes that he feared he would end up eaten by the fish, but finally did arrive in Abyssinia after a 20-day voyage. He continues to describe a beautiful mountaineous landscape peopled by a few Bedouin tribes and evokes their hard life, the cry of the jackals, and the devastation of crops by soldiers and by apes. He states the price of wheat, horses, and farming animals, describes the mining of gold, silver and iron and summarizes the situation in Abyssinia, since the former empire was overthrown by "la lance du farouche Gallas". He describes the savage manners of a country at war: the enslavement of women and children, the emasculation of men, and the rampant diseases. He also explains how the country first seized by the Turks passed to France, and provides his minister with first-hand geopolitical intelligence: "L'Anglais travaille ce pays. - Léon des Avanchers, friend of the French explorer Antoine d'Abadie, was a missionary in Abyssinia, a geographer, cartographer and explorer of East Africa, and a correspondent of the Società Geografica Italiana. He is known to have bought many slaves to free them and was the founder of the first Catholic church in the Seychelles. - Some original corrections and insertions. Traces of original folds. Well-preserved.

1850. Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, initialled "J L" on lower left, mounted in larger sheet of paper, matted. 1 vols. 4 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches. Fine. Framed and glazed. Leech, John. Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, initialled "J L" on lower left, mounted in larger sheet of paper, matted. 1 vols. 4 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches. John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prolific and successful of the English artists and caricaturists of the mid 19th century. "His humour was like his talent, gentle, warm-hearted and positive, his world, the ups and downs of middle class life, the sports of the squirearchy, and the peccadilloes of army officers and undergraduates" (Houfe). The conventions of social humor he established with his first contributions to the newly founded Punch, in 1841, lasted into the 1920s, but his greatest fame came through his book illustrations, particularly those for Surtees's sporting novels. "Extravagantly praised by Ruskin, Leech's often careless but never crude drawings have survived in charm and humour to give us a refreshing glimpse of mid-Victorian society." (Houfe).

TRISTAN UND ISOLDE - Inscribed to Anton Seidl and with his Performance Markings Throughout

Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig - Tristan und Isolde. Vollständiger Klavierauszug von Hans von Bülow. 2° (330 x 260 mm). Engraved throughout. [PN] 9942. Without the cast and index leaf after title as in some copies, title repaired and strengthened along margins, some leaves with repairs mostly to corners, occasional some spotting and soiling. Modern half morocco, matching blue marbled paper over boards. Provenance: Anton Seidl (1850-1898), Hungarian conductor, a protégé of Richard Wagner and participant in the first Bayreuth Festival, conductor of the New York Philharmonic (presentation inscription by Wagner, slightly trimmed). A historic example of the score. FIRST EDITION of the piano vocal score. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Wagner to Anton Seidl: "Herrn Seidl, zu Weihnachten/ 1872/ Richard Wagner". Substantial directorial markings throughout score (on 46 pages), including cuts, phrases and a few alterations, in Seidl's hand. Seidl was summoned by Wagner to Bayreuth in 1872 and worked in close association with Wagner between 1872 and 1876, actually living in Wagner's house during the five years as he assisted the composer in making the first fair copy of Der Ring des Nibelungen. Seidl took part the first Bayreuth Festival in 1876. He and Wagner remained close associates, with Wagner helping to secure Seidl's appointment to the Leipzig State Theater, where he remained until 1882. "During the last years of his life Wagner entrusted all important matters to Anton Seidl, whenever he was consulted about them, and this enabled the young conductor to fan the flame of enthusiasm for his adored master in various German and foreign cities. In the following year he was engaged as conductor of the opera at Leipzig, where he astonished the conservative natives by the most stirring interpretations of Wagner's works. It was there that I for the first time had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Seidl conduct, and I now realize better than I did then, that it was his interpretative genius that there made me appreciate the Nibelung dramas, in some respects even more than I had appreciated them at Bayreuth" (Henry T. Finck, Anton Seidl, A Memorial by His Friends. New York: Scribners, 1899, p. 13-14). Universally acknowledged to be one of the high-points of the operatic repertory, the libretto and music for Tristan were written and composed by Wagner himself. The opera had its Premier in Munich on June 10, 1865 under the baton of Hans von Bülow.         "Die Naturwissenschaft u. die Revolution". Autograph manuscript signed ("L. F."). No place, 1. VI. 1850.

1850. 4to. 33 1/3 pp., with several pasted correction strips. Autograph manuscript, in German, on "Natural Science and the Revolution": the strongly revised setting copy of his essay about the effects of scientific progress on philosophy and politics, inspired by Jacob Moleschott's book "Lehre der Nahrungsmittel. Für das Volk" ("Doctrine of Food. For the People", 1850). - Some dust- and gluestaining; a few insignificant edge defects. With editorial notes (in red ink and crayon) for publication in the "Blätter für literarische Unterhaltung" (nos. 268-271, 8-12 Dec. 1850), of which a copy is included. - Feuerbach's philosophy had an enormous and direct impact on that of Karl Marx, who not only wholeheartedly accepted his criticism of religion (which he radicalised politically), but also, particularly, his anthropological materialism. "Das Kapital" has its foundation in Feuerbach's "theoretical revolution" which views material reality as the primary truth and thus sets idealist philosophy "on its feet". Ultimately, Marx was to arrive at different conclusions than the much-admired Feuerbach: while the latter saw anthropology as the only viable scientific conclusion, the practical consequence for Marx was criticism of the economy and to overthrow the social conditions. Published in: Gesammelte Werke, ed. by W. Schuffenhauer, vol. 10, pp. 347-368 (with departures from the published text).

Augsburg, Vincenz Zanna & Comp., [1845-1850].

1850. 1 f. of dedication, 100 lithogr. plates in splendid original colour raised in silver and gold. Stored loosely in 8 original wrappers as issued. Small oblong 4to (245 x 150 mm). Half calf portfolio with giltstamped title to spine. Complete set of pattern books for coaches; the most beautiful and comprehensive series of its kind ever published. The personal copy of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, to whom the work was dedicated. Exceedingly rare; only three complete copies are known in libraries and collections worldwide (the copy in the Bavarian State Library is incomplete, containing fascicules I-IV only). The magnificent work by the Munich draughtsman contains one hundred designs for sophisticated state coaches and everyday vehicles. The plates, beautifully coloured and many of them heightened in gold and silver, show open and closed coaches with two or four wheels, transport carriages, omnibuses, company cars, sleighs, railway carriages and a hearse; the plate printed in gold shows a sample of a monogram for coachmen's blankets or coach doors. - "Neueste Wagen" was most probably commissioned by Vinzenz Zanna & Comp. - publishers in Augsburg specialized in the distribution of maps since 1833 - and it is assumed that the careful hand-colouring of the plates was done on their premises. Dinkel's work, known in a few copies only, appeared in eight fascicules, each containing 12 and the last one 16 outline lithographs. Zanna dedicated Dinkel's work to Duke Maximilian of Bavaria (1808-88), father of the famous Empress Sisi. The dedication leaf is known in two versions: the paper embossed with a lozenge-shaped pattern recalling the Bavarian colors (as here) and with coloured lettering but without embossing. - Original wrappers slightly stained near the edges, otherwise a perfect copy from the Library of the Dukes of Bavaria at Tegernsee Castle. Engelmann, Suppl., 23 (mentions only 6 issues of 12 ff. each). Facsimile with commentary: R. H. Wackernagel, Joseph Dinkel, Wagenmoden im Biedermeier. Stadtwagen, Reise- und Sportfahrzeuge zwischen 1830 und 1840. Dortmund, 1981 (= Die bibliophilen Taschenbücher, vol. 239). For Dinkel cf. AKL XXVII, 484.
