Con nove grandi tavole più volte ripiegate, in fine, incise e disegnate da Ettore Lombardi. Uno strappetto riparato ai margine interno della prima tavola; Alone d'umido alla prima carta bianca; piccolo alone d'umido anche al frontespizio, per il resto buon e fresco esemplare di rara opera. Si tratta della prima edizione italiana, contemporanea a quella francese, dello studio definitivo relativo al traforo ferroviario del Frejus.       [Chine, ca. 1850]. 1850 Trois boîtes (1 de 132 x 88 mm., 2 de 111 x 75 mm.) contenant 9, 7 et 6 aquarelles sur pulpe de mûrier. Soit 22 aquarelles. Boîte et étui cartonnés renfermant les 3 boîtes présentées avec un petit outil en bois pour détacher les feuillets. Ravissant ensemble composé de 22 aquarelles représentant des types chinois. Particulièrement bien préservé, le fragile ensemble est présenté dans des boîtes de cartonnage ancien, bordées de tissu avec un couvercle de verre. Une sorte de petite fourchette pour extraire les peintures complète l'ensemble. Chaque carte comporte un portrait en pied, avec un grand nombre de soldats, portant lance, sabre ou étendard, mais également des femmes élégantes, différents artisans et vendeurs de rue, des enfants jouant. Travail délicat aux coloris particulièrement vifs, élégamment présenté. Three boxes (1: 132 x 88 mm., 2: 111 x 75 mm.) with 9, 7 and 6 watercolors on pith paper. (Total: 22 watercolors). Cardboard box and slipcase, containing the three boxes with a wood stick to separate the leaves. Lovely set with 22 watercolours featuring Chinese types. In very fine condition, the fragile watercolors are presented in ancient cardboard boxes with a glass top. Each painting features a full lenght portrait: soldiers, elegant ladies, craftsmen, kids, etc. Delicate item.

      Salem, Oh.: Homestead Print, 1850. Broadside, 16 x 10 3/4 inches. A few short closed edge tears, light toning and foxing. Very good plus. A rare and striking abolitionist broadside from Salem, Ohio, the seat of the Western Anti-Slavery Society, and a small but important center of progressive movements through much of the 19th century. As suggested by their advertisement's headline, "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders," the members of the Western Anti- Slavery Society were radical Garrisonian abolitionists who believed the U.S. Constitution was fundamentally a pro-slavery document and therefore unfit to bind together a morally just nation. Formed in the mold of Garrison's New England Anti-Slavery Society (founded 1832) and American Anti-Slavery Society (1833), the Ohio Anti- Slavery Society first assembled in 1833 in Putnam, Ohio, and in 1839 moved its headquarters to Salem and became known as the Western Anti-Slavery Society. From 1845 to 1861 the Society published a weekly newspaper, THE ANTI- SLAVERY BUGLE, printed for the first five weeks in New Lisbon, Ohio, and for all subsequent issues in Salem. The text of the broadside, a printed blank form for advertising abolitionist meetings, reads in full as follows: "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders. ANTI- SLAVERY MEETINGS! Anti-Slavery Meetings will be held in this place, to commence on [blank] in the [blank] at [blank] To be Addressed by [blank] Agents of the Western ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY. Three millions of your fellow beings are in chains - the Church and Government sustains the horrible system of oppression. Turn Out! AND LEARN YOUR DUTY TO YOURSELVES, THE SLAVE AND GOD. EMANCIPATION or DISSOLUTION, and a FREE NORTHERN REPUBLIC!"       Charleston, S.C.: C. Canning, 1850. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good binding. An important work in which Bachman -- pastor St. John's Lutheran Church in Charleston -- maintains that all of humanity derives from one species. By the minister, naturalist, friend of Audubon (he collaborated with Audubon in writing The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, and two of his daughters married two of Audubon's sons) [DNB, I, pp. 466, 467], his thoughts here articulated influenced on the evolutionary theory which rocked the 19th century world. Binding is half-leather over marbled boards, and is lacking the front endpaper. With the bookplate of the "North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention". Pencilled gift inscription on the title page. The front hinge has an old paper reinforcement. One surmises that he was a man of some courage, arguing as he did in Charleston in 1850 that whites and blacks are of the same species. Uncommon in the trade. (DNB, I, pp. 466,467). Very Good binding.

      London: Pau, Monguillet. 1850 - Contemporary full paper boards with cloth spine, title in gilt on upper board. Size: 14 inches by 10 ½ inches. Oblong folio. With 24 superb tinted lithographed plates, each with captions. The plates, depict various locations in the Pyrenees Mountains. A very attractive example, plates are clean and crisp. Pictorial title-page and twenty-four lithographic plates, each printed in black and sepia. (Oblong folio), original black paper boards backed in black cloth, title decoratively gilt lettered on front cover. Andre Gorse was a painter of landscape and genre scenes who participated in the Paris Salon in 1850 and thereafter. He also produced many highly attractive lithographic prints depicting the glories of the Pyrenees region in south-western France. Evidently sightseers could choose the prints they wanted and then have them bound up into individual albums. The scenes depicted include several towns and villages, spas, mountain ranges and peaks, numerous waterfalls and cascades, lakes, etc. Condition Report Externally Front joint split See above and photos Internally - The binding on this volumes is shaken and poor - the plates are to all intents and purposes loose. [N.p.]: Printed by Tympan, Frisket, & Co, Rob Row, [c. 1850]. 15" x 10-1/2" broadside, mounted, cut piece of letter laid down near center reading: "Yours resp[ectfull]y Wm Oram 43 Monday evening." Light browning and soiling, a few minor chips and some rubbing to edges, three horizontal fold lines. A curious, rare item. * The text of this satirical broadside continues (in part): "The Public are particularly Cautioned against the depredations of the above-named FILTHY ANIMALS, as they are known to be peculiarly attached to that which is not their own:---i.e. 'Rates'." William Oran may have been the author of the broadside text. We were unable to locate a copy of this broadside in any library.

Kaiser [1814-1874] hat mich, unter Behändigung Ihres Gastrollen-Repertoirs von Ihrem Wunsche, sich hier in Wien zu fixieren verständigt und ich erlaube mir daher an Euer Wohlgeboren die Anfrage zu stellen, ob Sie geneigt wären an meiner Bühne ein Engagement anzutreten. In dem Falle daß Sie damit einverstanden seyen ersuche ich [...] mir umgehend Ihre Bedingnisse und die Zeit bis wann Sie ein Engagement an meiner Bühne anzutreten in der Lage sind bekannt geben zu wollen. Opern sind an meiner Bühne nicht gang und gebe wohl aber Vaudevilles und dann und wann kleine Lieder-Spiele; das Repertoire meiner Bühne bilden Lust- und Schauspiele, Possen, Volksstücke und Lokal-Possen mit Gesang. W. in Ihrem Gastspiele - woran wohl nicht entfernt zu zweifeln ist - meinen Erwartungen entsprechen, an den zwischen uns schon vorher abzuschließenden Vertrag gebunden sind [...]". - Weiter mit Honorar- und Repertoirevorschlägen. - Carl kam 1826 samt Ensemble von München nach Wien, wo er zunächst das Theater an der Wien mietete. 1838 kaufte er das Leopoldstädter Theater, renoviert es und nannte es 1847 Carltheater. Hier erlebten viele Stücke des Alt-Wiener Volkstheaters von Johann Nepomuk Nestroy ihre Uraufführung. In den Jahren 1854 bis 1860 war Nestroy Direktor des Theaters. - Kleinere Papierschäden und etwas gebräunt.

Detailed letter to "mio carissimo Generale", i. e. the Naples general Guglielmo Pepe (1783-1855), regarding his "Narrative of Scenes and Events in Italy from 1847 to 1849": "Ho preso varie volte la penna per rispondere all'articolo dello Standard da voi indicatomi; ma come difendere l'opera da quel giornale [...] criticata, se prima non avessi letto l'opera stessa? Come difendere ciò che non si conosce? Ciò mi fe' cader la penna dalle mani, aspettando che il vostro lavoro mi fosse ben cognito. Ora dunque lo sto considerando attentamente, e ve ne dirò le prime sensazioni che in me eccita. Vi parlerò per ora di questo 1.° volume, che darà materia a questa prima letterina; e quando avrò letto il secondo, vi darò la mia opinione sul totale: ed allora vi dirò francamente ciò che debba farsi riguardo all'articolo dello Standard, che ho già letto.       Lyon, Boitel, 1850 ; in-8, br. ; 106 pp., couverture grise. EDITION ORIGINALE tirée à 125 exemplaires. Né à Sièges dans le Jura (1808-1853), Collombet se destinait à la prêtrise mais l'héritage de son oncle lui permit de se consacrer à l'étude et à l'érudition. Il a collaboré au Dictionnaire Historique de Feller et à la Bibliographie Universelle de Michaud. Ami de Sainte-Beuve, il a collaboré avec lui, notamment pour la rédaction de Port Royal. Il a publié divers ouvrages sur les débuts de l'histoire chrétienne et une "Histoire critique et générale de la suppression des Jésuites au XVIIIe siècle" (d'après Patrice Beghain in "Dictionnaire historique de Lyon"). Petites salissures d'usage, quelques petites rousseurs claires, bon exemplaire dans l'ensemble.

Boards intricately stamped around the diced central panels, this outlined in a rich running foliate gilt pattern, all set within double rules. All edges gilt, tissue guards to the engraved plates. In good+ to near VG, sound, clean, tight condition. Bindings still sturdy and very well bound, square, small scattered scuffing, most visible along joints and edges although some scattered small rubbing spots around as well. show some signes of age, light general age wear, -- still attractive as a set. Leather remains supple and sound, small normal age scuffing to ends, joints and corners. Textblocks square, tight, clean- moderately toned with some dampstaining to a few of the engraved plates in the first volume, plus scattered mostly small foxing throughout. Set has an overall pleasing aspect to it, the foxing entirely inoffensive and easy to overlook or forgive. Old owners name to front endpapers. Photos capture better than words. Books are approaching 175 years old, so they are not modern. There-in lies their appeal- less than perfect but handsome old leather bound books. We enjoy old objects like these with gentle age flaws. They display character and slight wear to an old object gives it a modern appeal which we believe exceeds the same item in untouched almost perfect condition. Nov. 1850"): "Ich habe Gretchen auf diesem Blatte, dessen Rückseite ich eben beschreibe, ein Gedicht abschreiben lassen, das ich in weichmüthiger Jugendzeit einmal entworfen, aber nicht durchgeführt hatte; kürzlich fiel mir das Taschenbuch mit dem Entwurf in die Hände und da machte ich es fertig. An einen Freund: "Bey Neumann habe ich einen guten Abguß von der von Holbing gefertigten Büste Sr. Majestät des Kaisers gefunden welche mir zur Benützung bereitwilligst zur Disposition steht [...]" (Br. v. 20. III. 1850). "Mein Aufenthalt in München dauerte viel länger als es anfangs meine Absicht war, ich hatte mir vorgenommen auf jeden Fall einige Zeit vor eintreffen [!] des allerhöchsten Hofes in Wien zu sein, allein verhindern Familieninteressen, darunter die Verheurathung meiner jüngsten Tochter mit einem brafen [!] Mann, auch einige unabweißliche Arbeiten, hielten mich fest biß jetzt [!] [...] Ich erlaube mir Ihnen dieß zu melden mit der Bitte (wenn Sie es für geeignet finden) S. Ex. dem Herrn S.M. L. Grafen von Grünne Kenntnis hievon zu geben [...]" (Br. v. 16. III. 1857). Karl Ludwig Graf von Grünne (1808-84) - seit 1848 Generalmajor und erster Generaladjutant des Kaisers - war zur Zeit der Entstehung des Briefes Leiter der Militärischen Zentralkanzlei. - Nach Studien an den Akademien in Augsburg und München lebte der gelernte Konditor Adam als Hofmaler des italienischen Vizekönigs Eugène de Beauharnais 1809-24 in Mailand und arbeitete anschließend an verschiedenen deutschen Höfen ehe er sich der Darstellungen von Schlachten verschrieb, die er u. a. im Auftrag von Kaiser Franz Joseph, König Ludwig I. und Joseph Wenzel Graf Radetzky ausführte. "Adams Verdienst besteht in der Vielseitigkeit und in der Naturwahrheit seiner Schilderungen [...] Mit Recht gilt er als einer der besten Schlachten- und Pferdemaler seiner Zeit [...]" (Thieme/Becker I, 57f., 57).

Memorie di un Italiano dal 1° settembre 1848 al 31 dicembre 1850" Tre volumi in 4°, cm. 34,00 x cm. 26,00; pagine 216 + 100 tavole, 208 + 100 tavole e 220 + 106 tavole. Antiporta illustrata a ciascun volume. Opera completa di tutte le sue pagine e presenti tutte le meravigliose 306 tavole allegorico - caricaturali fuori testo. Legatura originale in cart. rigido a stampa con vignette impresse a ciascun piatto anteriore, dorsi rinforzati anticamente in carta. Presente timbro di una biblioteca dell'immigrazione alle antiporte, fioriture marginali. Complessivamente esemplare genuino e marginoso che possiede la particolarità di avere le tavole stampate su carta di Cina ed applicate, onde evitarne la fioritura, e di averle tutte presenti. Celebre opera di dissacrante satira politica, soprattutto contro il Papato, la Francia e l'Austria, le cui tavole provengono prevalentemente dal giornale romano Don Pirlone, quotidiano apparso nel 1848 e 1849. Opera completa I?moti del 1848, detti anche?rivoluzione del '48?o?Primavera dei popoli?furono un'ondata di?moti rivoluzionari?borghesi?che sconvolsero l'Europa nel?1848?e nel?1849. Scopo dei moti fu abbattere i governi della?Restaurazione?per sostituirli con governi liberali. Il loro impatto storico fu così profondo e violento che nel linguaggio corrente è entrata in uso l'espressione «fare un quarantotto» per sottintendere una improvvisa confusione e scompiglio. La prima agitazione europea del 1848 si verificò in Italia: la?rivoluzione siciliana?che esplose il 12 gennaio di quell'anno, che rappresentò la prima miccia dell'esplosione europea. L'insurrezione siciliana, infatti, spinse in un primo momento i Borbone a concedere il ritorno nell'Isola alla?costituzione del 1812. Seguì una rivoluzione a?Napoli, il 27, che costrinse, due giorni dopo,?Ferdinando II?a promettere una Costituzione, promulgata l'11 febbraio. Lo stesso 11 febbraio?Leopoldo II di Toscana, cugino primo dell'imperatore?Ferdinando I d'Austria, concesse la Costituzione, nella generale approvazione dei suoi sudditi. L'esempio borbonico fu seguito da?Carlo Alberto di Savoia?con lo Statuto Albertino e da?Papa Pio IX?con lo Statuto Fondamentale. Solo il re piemontese mantenne però lo Statuto. In Sicilia il parlamento proclamò in marzo l'indipendenza, che sarebbe durata fino al maggio?1849. Nel napoletano la concessione e la successiva repressione delle libertà costituzionali, portò dal maggio al settembre di quell'anno a una serie di moti. In tutto il?Regno Lombardo-Veneto?scoppiarono rivolte, come le?Cinque giornate di Milano?che sfociarono nella?prima guerra di indipendenza. Nello Stato Pontificio una rivolta interna estromise papa Pio IX dai suoi poteri temporali e portò alla costituzione della?Repubblica Romana. La rivoluzione delle?Cinque giornate di Milano?e altre proteste indussero il Re?Carlo Alberto a dichiarare guerra all'Austria. Le truppe vennero presto sconfitte e solo quelle francesi poterono far retrocedere gli austriaci. La successiva ascesa al trono di?Vittorio Emanuele II?fece del?Piemonte?il motore propulsore del processo di?unificazione italiana?che tuttavia si sarebbe ottenuto solo nel?1861. Per quanto i Moti del '48 furono sedati abbastanza velocemente, le vittime furono decine di migliaia:?il destino della democrazia europea ci è sfuggito di mano?dichiarerà?Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Gli storici concordano che la Primavera dei popoli fu, alla fin fine, soprattutto un sanguinoso fallimento, se si eccettua la concessione dello?Statuto Albertino?nel?Regno di Sardegna?da parte di?Carlo Alberto di Savoia, l'unica costituzione non revocata di quelle concesse o votate nel 1848-49. Vi furono tuttavia radicali e notevoli effetti a lungo termine:?Germania?e Italia sarebbero presto arrivate all'unificazione facendo leva anche sulla necessità di?autodeterminazione dei popoli. Analogamente l'Ungheria?sarebbe giunta ad un parziale riconoscimento della propria autonomia (a discapito della popolazione?slava) grazie all'Ausgleich?del?1867. In?Prussia?e?Austria?fu abolito il feudalesimo, mentre in?Russia?fu eliminata la?servitù della gleba nel 1861. L'Opera vanta 306 tavole allegorico - caricaturali sullo stato dell'Italia del tempo, incisione su rame ricca di significato e rappresentazione mediante satirica dissacrante della condizione della nostra penisola oppressa. Le tavole furono in parte riprese dal giornale romano Don Pirlone, quotidiano, uscito dal 1settembre 1848 al 2 luglio 1849 (con una interruzione dl 29 aprile al 7 maggio 1849), ma in parte furono realizzate appositamente per questa opera. Tra gli incisori sono presenti anche i nomi di Ratti, Vaiani, Monneret, Gallucci, Pichi, Masutti. Il titolo Don Pirlone deriva quasi sicuramente da una maschera creata dallo scrittore satirico Girolamo Gigli (1660 - 1722). Si trattava di una specie di Tartufo molieresco, ispirato ad una figura reale, il canonico Feliciati di Sarteano. Nei tre volumi l'avvocato Michelangiolo Pinto raccolse tutto il pubblicato del giornale, che fu il più temuto e allo stesso tempo il più apprezzato tra i molteplici giornali satirici che si pubblicavano nella Roma di Pio IX all'epoca delle grandi riforme volute dal Papa. I romani gli dedicarono perfino una canzone (Davanti un numero di gran persone - che mi salutano Viva Pirlone!). Anche gli avversari politici ne riconobbero l'efficacia e la bellezza delle tavole. Il 22 marzo 1849 apparve con il cappello frigio per incitare alla resistenza contro i francesi. Il Pinto, nato a Roma nel 1818, spentosi nel 1910, già comproprietario ed articolista del celebre periodico satirico "DonPirlone", riparò a Torino dopo la caduta della Repubblica Romana; scrivendo la presente opera egli vi trasfuse lo stesso mordace spirito polemico che aveva animato il quasi omonimo periodico: "Edotti dall'esperienza, sappiamo quale profonda traccia lascino nell'animo umano gli incancellabili colpi del ridicolo".
