AN ADDRESS DELIVERED IN THE CITY OF GALVESTON ON THE 22D OF FEBRUARY, 1848, THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH DAY OF WASHINGTON, AND OF THE BATTLE OF BUENA VISTA.

News Office. W. Richardson, Publisher,, Galveston: 1848 - 17, [3 blanks] pp. Stitched in original printed green wrappers. Light foxing, Very Good. In an attractive, modern quarter morocco slipcase, with gilt-lettered spine. The Handbook of Texas gives Smith some serious respect, calling this Surgeon General of the Texan Army and Yale graduate "the father of Texas medicine" and "the father of the University of Texas." The Address commemorates the success of American soldiers and "their veteran commander, General Zachary Taylor, whose generalship had been proved on many a triumphant battle field." The Americans were outnumbered at the Battle of Buena Vista. "The squadrons of Santa Anna, so full of confidence in the morning, had been broken and repulsed; under cover of the night they fled for safety. At Buena Vista was annihilated the military power of Mexico in the north-eastern provinces of that country." Smith lauds President Polk, the righteousness of American arms, and American war aims. He denounces "betrayers of the country" who deny the American claim to Texas, and who assert that Polk commenced the war unconstitutionally. His enthusiastic affirmation of Manifest Destiny rejoices in the freedom guaranteed by American institutions. "The Mexican war is a part of the mission, of the destiny allotted to the Anglo Saxon race on this continent. It is our destiny, our mission to civilize, to Americanize this continent." Smith emphasizes the immense importance of California to the United States; and the need to thwart British efforts to "hem in our Pacific territory, and control the two great thoroughfares of the overland trade."Winkler 57.         Minutes of the Inferior Court for the Trial of Slaves and Free

1848 - A Georgia Slave is Executed for the Rape of White Woman [Manuscript] [Slavery]. [Georgia]. Minutes of the Inferior Court for the Trial of Slaves and Free Persons of Color for Capital and Other Offences [Headline Title]. Habersham County, Georgia, March 21-30, 1848. Five 12-1/2" x 8" ruled leaves, probably removed from a ledger, content to rectos and versos. Light toning, otherwise fine. Manuscript accompanied by a typed transcription. An excellent example of a slave trial. $3,000. * This legal record details the arrest, indictment, trial, witness statements and sentencing of the Negro Slave Dave, "property" of Francis Powel, for the Rape of Hester Ann Dobbs. The rape of a white woman by a Black slave was the most horrifying crime in the mind of the white population of the antebellum South. According to Census records, Hester Dodds was the 14 or 15 year-old daughter of a farmer. The rape was alleged to have occurred on March 18, "in the woods nearby a private pathway." Dave, the accused slave was arrested three days later. At first, he maintained his innocence, but after being jailed he allegedly "confessed" to his guilt. The trial took place on March 30. Despite his jail-house confession, Dave pleaded not guilty. Dobbs, the victim, testified that she saw Dave at his master's home. When she left, he followed her into the woods, where, seeing he was naked, ran from him. He followed, carrying a stick in one hand. Though only striking her with his hand, he threw her to the ground. She "resisted his attempts for some time," but he finally "ravished her by force." Though she was "much frightened," she "thinks she remembers all": that Dave "entered her" and that "an Eruption of Matter took place." He then "quit of his own accord and warned her that "he would kill her" if she told anyone about his crime. The victim's mother testified that her daughter returned to her their home "much injured and hurt. Bruised all over" and "much frightened", but relating what had happened, she said "If I don't live, I want you to make" the slave "suffer for this act". Two men who had not personally witnessed the rape merely testified they had seen evidence of a "considerable scuffle" (this despite a "heavy rain") at the scene of the crime, a "dried pine limb" nearby which "looked as though it had been used" and "barefoot tracks" on the path w.

ESSAYS AND TALES BY JOHN STERLING, COLLECTED AND EDITED, WITH A MEMOIR OF HIS LIFE, BY JULIUS CHARLES HARE, M.A., RECTOR OF HERSTMONCEUX ..

London: John W. Parker, West Strand, 1848.. Octavo, two volumes: [1-4] [i] ii-ccxxxii [1-3] 4-504; [1-4] [1-3] 4-649 [650: printer's imprint], engraved frontispiece (portrait of Sterling) inserted in volume one, early three-quarter leather and cloth, marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. First edition. Published posthumously, this is the major repository of Sterling's shorter prose work: biographical sketches, epigrams, varied essays, and tales, most of which have a fantastic slant, including the short novel, THE ONYX RING (1838-1839), an important landmark in early Victorian fantasy. It originally appeared as part of a series of tales published in BLACKWOOD'S, "Legendary Lore." The editor of the present volume, J. C. Hare, was Sterling's tutor at Cambridge, where Sterling became acquainted with Coleridge and Wordsworth. In 1851 Thomas Carlyle published an eloquent and popular biography of Sterling as a response to Hare's memoir contained herein. THE ONYX RING is "a deeply felt fantasy in which an unhappy man is enabled to share the experiences of various others in order to search out the key to happiness. Though many of its characterizations are bitter, it refuses cynicism and despair. More earnest than most contemporary moralizing fantasies, and more intense than Anatole France's parable 'The Shirt,' it is in its way a minor masterpiece ... Ill health and premature death prevented Sterling from becoming one of the major writers of his generation, but the neglect into which his excellent fantasies have been allowed to fall is dreadfully unjust." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-146. "... certainly the most significant UK pioneer of fantasy ..." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 897. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1525. Bleiler (1978), p. 186. Reginald 13616. NCBEL III 1306. Binding marked and rubbed, but square and solid with a fine interior. A scarce work; OCLC reports just two library holdings in North America.         Buki nihyakuzu [200 Illustrations of Japanese Arms & Armor]

200 color-printed woodcuts. 3 leaves of text & 13 leaves of illus., all folding. Small folio, orig. green wrappers (some relatively inoffensive worming, for the most part carefully mended), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Edo: Kobujuku [a school for samurai children], 1848. First edition of this finely illustrated work on Japanese arms and armor, prepared as an educational tool for the children of samurai. Each page of illustration contains 16 panels: eight colored-printed woodcuts, each with an accompanying text description. The 200 woodcuts depict armor, weapons, accessories, details of military costumes, and everyday items in a samurai household. The panels were intended to be cut up and the woodcuts spread out on a table or floor. An adult would hold the accompanying descriptions and call out its name and the children would have to find the related woodcut. This game was called karuta, introduced into Japan by the Portuguese in the mid-16th century. The woodcuts are quite sophisticated and detailed with a great variety of swords and weapons being depicted. The colors range from red to yellow to several blues to grey. Language skills were also being taught; along with the kanji, hiragana reading marks were included.

Autograph Letter, signed, to Barto. Parodi [?], in Genoa

Messina 1848 - Docketed "copia" at top left corner; and with integral address sheet, with red Messina postal stamp of "12 Luglio". 4to. From Sicily during the First Italian Independence War. Lella was a prominent Sicilian banker and politician who eventually became a Senator in the united Kingdom of Italy, in 1861. The present letter was written around the time of the first Italian War of Independence (1848-1849), when revolts against the Austrians broke out in Naples and Sicily, Lella's homeland. Difficulties and dangers of communication and travel during a time of war no doubt explain the time gap between the composition of the letter and its posting over two weeks later. "The one remaining means of communication between Napoli and Este is via French postal steamers ?"A fascinating letter from a prominent politician during the turbulent years leading to the unification opf Italy.         NEW ZEALAND: A TREATISE ON PRACTICAL SURVEYING, AS PARTICULARLY APPLICABLE TO NEW ZEALAND AND OTHER COLONIES: CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF THE INSTRUMENTS MOST USEFUL TO THE COLONIAL SURVEYOR AND ENGINEER: INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAYING OUT TOWNS, COUNTRY AND SUBURB

London: Longman & Company, . 1848 - 8° (23 x 15 cm / 9 x 6 inches) – Collation Complete: x pp., 174 pp., 12 pp. tables, 17 pp. monochrome plates of interconnecting road maps, 1 folding plate of diagrams, 3 large folding maps, errata slip at end, bound in original green cloth, with neat manuscript owner’s inscription to title in blank corner (Very Good, internally clean and crisp, folding maps fresh and crisp; binding with minor shelf-wear, some loss to original paper label on spine). Very Rare – the most important early work on land surveying in New Zealand, by Arthur Whitehead, a pioneering surveyor for the New Zealand Company, profusely illustrated by original maps, plans and diagrams, including 3 large folding coloured maps of Wellington and the Hutt Valley. This excellent and very rare work is of great historical importance to the early colonial history of New Zealand. Published in 1848, barely seven years after New Zealand officially became a colony, it is both a sophisticated land surveying manual and a fascinating personal memoir penned by Arthur Whitehead, one of the most important surveyors working for the New Zealand Company, the syndicate that founded modern New Zealand. It is by far and away the finest and most detailed work on the the early terrestrial mapping of New Zealand, with the methods and techniques described having broader significance, as they explain best practices as conducted in other frontier British colonial possessions, such as Canada, South Africa, Australia, Guyana and rural India. Well-presented and highly readable, Whitehead’s work gives a unique and valuable insight into the mind and actions of a British surveyor, working at the vanguard of the Empire. The text is enlivened by numerous plans, diagrams and maps, including a trio of large folding, coloured maps that detail the critical Wellington and Hutt Valley areas, as well as a series of 17 monochrome plates illustrating the route of the new road running up the Hutt Valley, plus a folding plate of diagrams of surveyors’ instruments. By that time Arthur Whitehead arrived in Wellington to begin his charge as a surveyor, in February 1842, New Zealand’s coasts had already been quite well charted by the Royal Navy, by way of trigonometric surveys. However, the islands’ interior was scarcely mapped at all, and Europeans had never even visited many areas. From 1839, the New Zealand Company commenced surveying lands in preparation for the founding of towns, the building of roads and the demarcation of cadastral divisions for new homesteads. It is worth noting that the present example of the work features the neat former owner’s inscription of "Robert Baker 16th July 1858" on the title page. This likely refers to Robert Baker (1797 - 1867), a native of Devon who was a pioneer settler in New Zealand under the auspices of the New Zealand Company. The Contents of the Work in Focus - Whitehead’s text is fascinating and presents a valuable insight into the nature of frontier land surveying during the mid-19th Century. Whitehead makes it plain that it was not possible to conduct surveys using the most sophisticated methods in such a rugged, heavily forested country as New Zealand, namely surveys executed via systematic, trigonometric surveys, regulated by astronomical observations. His general methodology was to conduct itinerary surveys, whereby base-points were ascertained through astronomical observations, while the land in between was measured by carefully following the routes of roads, paths or rivers, filling-in the intermediate details as best as possible. While not as accurate as systematic, triangulated surveys, this method, if practiced carefully, could produce fine maps sufficiently accurate for most purposes. Indeed, Whitehead proved to be highly skilled in this regard. That being said, he noted that the execution of surveys of small areas in flat, cleared county could be accomplished with advanced scientific means by use of a theodolite. The text of the book concerns six mains to

HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA. PHILADELPHIA, BOWEN, 1848-1850.

PHILADELPHIA, BOWEN, 1848-1850. Tre volumi in-8° grande: IV pp., 1 tavola con dedica a Washington, 333 pp., 40 tavv. - XVII pp., da p. (9) a p. 290, 48 tavv. - IV pp., da p. 17 a p. 392, 32 tavv. complessivamente 120 tavole in litografia finemente colorate all'epoca. Three large 8° volumes; IV pp., 1 dedication plate (to Washington), 333 pp., 41 plates - XVII pp., from p. (9) to p. 290, 48 plates - IV pp., from p. 17 to p. 392, 32 plates. All the 120 lithographic plates are finely and vividly hand-colored. Half red morocco by John Wright with corners, gilt tooled decoration and title on spine, gilt edges, marbled paper boards. Very nice copy, occasional light foxing due to the quality of paper. First octavo edition, second ever published. McKenney's work is a crucial source for the knowledge of American Indians culture and history: the magnificent plates, some of the finest examples of 19th century lithography, illustrate great leaders of the Indian nations (Sauk, Creek, Cherokee, Sioux, Choctaw, Chickasaw) which have disappeared since the mid-nineteenth century. Thomas McKenney, head of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs for many years, fought to preserve something of Indian culture, so integral a part of the history of the United States. The plates are "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed" (Howes), based on Charles Bind King's paintings in the Indian Gallery of the Dep. of War in Washington, which were destroyed in 1865 Smithsonian fire. These plates are then a really important document of that collection of paintings, lost today. Field 992. Howes M129. Sabin 43410a (1836-44 edizione in-folio).

– Soulsby 1060. Hulth I, 165.

Autograph Letter, signed, to Barto. Parodi [?], in Genoa

Messina, 1848. Docketed "copia" at top left corner; and with integral address sheet, with red Messina postal stamp of "12 Luglio". 4to. Docketed "copia" at upper left corner. Docketed "copia" at top left corner; and with integral address sheet, with red Messina postal stamp of "12 Luglio". "The one remaining means of communication between Napoli and Este is via French postal steamers …"A fascinating letter from a prominent politician during the turbulent years leading to the unification opf Italy.
