Lella was a prominent Sicilian banker and politician who eventually became a Senator in the united Kingdom of Italy, in 1861. The present letter was written around the time of the first Italian War of Independence (1848-1849), when revolts against the Austrians broke out in Naples and Sicily, Lella's homeland. Difficulties and dangers of communication and travel during a time of war no doubt explain the time gap between the composition of the letter and its posting over two weeks later. "The one remaining means of communication between Napoli and Este is via French postal steamers ?"A fascinating letter from a prominent politician during the turbulent years leading to the unification opf Italy.         NEW ZEALAND: A TREATISE ON PRACTICAL SURVEYING, AS PARTICULARLY APPLICABLE TO NEW ZEALAND AND OTHER COLONIES: CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF THE INSTRUMENTS MOST USEFUL TO THE COLONIAL SURVEYOR AND ENGINEER: INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAYING OUT TOWNS, COUNTRY AND SUBURB

London: Longman & Company, . 1848 - 8° (23 x 15 cm / 9 x 6 inches) – Collation Complete: x pp., 174 pp., 12 pp. tables, 17 pp. monochrome plates of interconnecting road maps, 1 folding plate of diagrams, 3 large folding maps, errata slip at end, bound in original green cloth, with neat manuscript owner’s inscription to title in blank corner (Very Good, internally clean and crisp, folding maps fresh and crisp; binding with minor shelf-wear, some loss to original paper label on spine). Very Rare – the most important early work on land surveying in New Zealand, by Arthur Whitehead, a pioneering surveyor for the New Zealand Company, profusely illustrated by original maps, plans and diagrams, including 3 large folding coloured maps of Wellington and the Hutt Valley. This excellent and very rare work is of great historical importance to the early colonial history of New Zealand. Published in 1848, barely seven years after New Zealand officially became a colony, it is both a sophisticated land surveying manual and a fascinating personal memoir penned by Arthur Whitehead, one of the most important surveyors working for the New Zealand Company, the syndicate that founded modern New Zealand. It is by far and away the finest and most detailed work on the the early terrestrial mapping of New Zealand, with the methods and techniques described having broader significance, as they explain best practices as conducted in other frontier British colonial possessions, such as Canada, South Africa, Australia, Guyana and rural India. Well-presented and highly readable, Whitehead’s work gives a unique and valuable insight into the mind and actions of a British surveyor, working at the vanguard of the Empire. The text is enlivened by numerous plans, diagrams and maps, including a trio of large folding, coloured maps that detail the critical Wellington and Hutt Valley areas, as well as a series of 17 monochrome plates illustrating the route of the new road running up the Hutt Valley, plus a folding plate of diagrams of surveyors’ instruments. By that time Arthur Whitehead arrived in Wellington to begin his charge as a surveyor, in February 1842, New Zealand’s coasts had already been quite well charted by the Royal Navy, by way of trigonometric surveys. However, the islands’ interior was scarcely mapped at all, and Europeans had never even visited many areas. From 1839, the New Zealand Company commenced surveying lands in preparation for the founding of towns, the building of roads and the demarcation of cadastral divisions for new homesteads. It is worth noting that the present example of the work features the neat former owner’s inscription of "Robert Baker 16th July 1858" on the title page. This likely refers to Robert Baker (1797 - 1867), a native of Devon who was a pioneer settler in New Zealand under the auspices of the New Zealand Company. The Contents of the Work in Focus - Whitehead’s text is fascinating and presents a valuable insight into the nature of frontier land surveying during the mid-19th Century. Whitehead makes it plain that it was not possible to conduct surveys using the most sophisticated methods in such a rugged, heavily forested country as New Zealand, namely surveys executed via systematic, trigonometric surveys, regulated by astronomical observations. His general methodology was to conduct itinerary surveys, whereby base-points were ascertained through astronomical observations, while the land in between was measured by carefully following the routes of roads, paths or rivers, filling-in the intermediate details as best as possible. While not as accurate as systematic, triangulated surveys, this method, if practiced carefully, could produce fine maps sufficiently accurate for most purposes. Indeed, Whitehead proved to be highly skilled in this regard. That being said, he noted that the execution of surveys of small areas in flat, cleared county could be accomplished with advanced scientific means by use of a theodolite. The text of the book concerns six mains to

HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA. PHILADELPHIA, BOWEN, 1848-1850.

PHILADELPHIA, BOWEN, 1848-1850. Tre volumi in-8° grande: IV pp., 1 tavola con dedica a Washington, 333 pp., 40 tavv. - XVII pp., da p. (9) a p. 290, 48 tavv. - IV pp., da p. 17 a p. 392, 32 tavv. complessivamente 120 tavole in litografia finemente colorate all'epoca. Three large 8° volumes; IV pp., 1 dedication plate (to Washington), 333 pp., 41 plates - XVII pp., from p. (9) to p. 290, 48 plates - IV pp., from p. 17 to p. 392, 32 plates. All the 120 lithographic plates are finely and vividly hand-colored. Half red morocco by John Wright with corners, gilt tooled decoration and title on spine, gilt edges, marbled paper boards. Very nice copy, occasional light foxing due to the quality of paper. First octavo edition, second ever published. McKenney's work is a crucial source for the knowledge of American Indians culture and history: the magnificent plates, some of the finest examples of 19th century lithography, illustrate great leaders of the Indian nations (Sauk, Creek, Cherokee, Sioux, Choctaw, Chickasaw) which have disappeared since the mid-nineteenth century. Thomas McKenney, head of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs for many years, fought to preserve something of Indian culture, so integral a part of the history of the United States. The plates are "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed" (Howes), based on Charles Bind King's paintings in the Indian Gallery of the Dep. of War in Washington, which were destroyed in 1865 Smithsonian fire. These plates are then a really important document of that collection of paintings, lost today. Field 992. Howes M129. Sabin 43410a (1836-44 edizione in-folio).

– Soulsby 1060. Hulth I, 165.

Difficulties and dangers of communication and travel during a time of war no doubt explain the time gap between the composition of the letter and its posting over two weeks later. "The one remaining means of communication between Napoli and Este is via French postal steamers …"A fascinating letter from a prominent politician during the turbulent years leading to the unification opf Italy.

The lithograph was created by Robert Carrick (1820-1905) of Day & Son, after James Rattray's drawing. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery, Inhabitants, & Costumes of Afghaunistan (1847-48). This is plate no. 14, showing two falconers from Kohistan, Khudadard and Guldin, with their hawks. Rattray saw them in September 1841 when they were part of the cavalry escort of his brother, Captain Rattray. Green dealer's label on back of mat from Harold T. Storey, London. Very scarce.         South Australia. [drop-title] . . . Statements prepared and published under the Sanction of the Committee, appointed for the Diffusion of Information on the State and Prospects of South Australia

Alfred Boot, Printer, 3, Dockhead, Bermondsey [for George Fife Angas], [London] 1848 - [1848]. Duodecimo (approximately 186 x 116 mm), 16 pages (last blank). A saddle-stitched drop-title pamphlet; small portions of the blank leading margin slightly stained; small dob of wax to the top right-hand corner of the last page (presumably the item had been mounted in an album or scrapbook at some stage); a very good copy. This copy is inscribed and signed at the head of the first page 'London, 1 Jany 1848. G.F. Angas London'. At the foot of the page Angas has written 'G.F. Angas prepared this tract & printed & circulated many thousands of them in England at his own cost. - before he went to So. Aust'a himself'. We can find no record of this item - and even if another copy has survived, and eventually surfaces, it cannot begin to compare with this exquisitely-annotated example. It is surely the type specimen . . . The role of George Fife Angas (1789-1879) in the foundation and settlement of South Australia is too well-known to require elaboration here. The South Australian Company, which he formed in October 1835 with other wealthy British businessmen, 'was not the only part of Angas's work for the foundation of South Australia. He lobbied the Colonial Office, subsidized authors and published magazines and pamphlets. . . He gave evidence to the select committee on South Australian affairs in 1841. Despite his passionate faith in self help, he became convinced that the colony would founder unless aided by the British government. His interviews with the Colonial Office, his lecture tours and his wide distribution of literature on South Australia helped to ensure a majority for the parliamentary grant that saved the colony's credit. . . In 1848 Angas decided to go to South Australia, where his German tenants were at last paying their rents and the South Australian Co. was again paying a dividend. He resigned as its chairman and director, and with renewed vigour planned a score of colonial ventures ranging from the export of tallow to drain pipes made by machine. Again he lectured and wrote and lobbied, this time for the Australian colonies' government bill. When it was passed in August 1850 . . . and all his English property was sold he sailed with his wife and youngest son in the "Ascendant" and arrived in Adelaide in January 1851' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). From internal evidence, this rare pamphlet would appear to have been produced early in the second half of 1848. Reference is made to the 3rd Annual Report of the South Australian Mining Company (dated 14 April 1848); obviously sufficient time had elapsed for this to have reached England by ship. At the Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Company on 28 June 1848, Angas tendered 'his resignation of the office of Chairman, and also his seat at the Board of Directors' (Hodder, page 299). As there is only passing reference to the South Australian Company in the pamphlet (merely as the contact address for the secretary of the committee, David McLaren), and Angas heads the (alphabetical) list of six committee-men, his resignation from the SAC would appear to have taken place. This 'Committee, appointed for the Diffusion of Information on the State and Prospects of South Australia', about which we can found no other trace, may be yet another example of Angas indulging his 'lifelong passion for forming societies and joining charitable committees' (ADB). As far as the text of the pamphlet goes, 'The Committee are aware of the anxious desire for information relative to South Australia, . . and shall studiously avoid giving currency to any statements of questionable authority'. These noble sentiments are prefaced by suitable quotes from Dr Thomas Arnold of Rugby, and Dr Robert Vaughan. The closely-printed text goes into great detail about land (regulations for its sale, land sold, land under cultivation); flocks and herds; population; wages and prices of provisions; free passages; imports and exports; soil and climate; and mineral discoveries. Recently rebound in black half calf, original marbled paper boards, titles to red morocco label to spine, gilt raised bands. Contemporary ownership inscription to third front and the rear binder's blanks. Slight worm damage to edge of front free endpaper, small loss to corners on 5 leaves, an excellent copy. Second edition overall, and the first American edition, published in April 1848, at 75 cents, with the publisher's misattribution on the title page of this book to Charlotte Brontë. The second English edition was not published until December 1850. The first edition, with Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey, was rushed out by Thomas Cautley Newby in December 1847, in the wake of the unexpected success of Jane Eyre, published by Newby's rivals, Smith Elder. Newby then embarked on an advertising campaign to confuse the identity of the three Bell "brothers", suggesting that all the novels were the work of one person: hence the mistaken attribution on the title page here.
