        14 Briefe m. eigenh. Unterschrift.

Zus. 22 S., Gr.-8 bzw. 4. [...] -

eigenh. farb. kalligraphierter Brief m. aquarellierter Federzeichnung u. Unterschrift.

Letters from Ingersoll to James Madison and Others

1848 - 6 letters. Philadelphia Washington, D.C. 1825-1848. A Notable Philadelphia Attorney Writes to James Madison and Others [Manuscript Archive]. Ingersoll, Charles Jared [1782-1862]. [Madison, James [1751-1836], And Other Recipients]. [Letters from Ingersoll to James Madison and Others]. Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. 1825-1848. 6 letters comprising 11 pages, sizes range from 7-1/4" x 3-1/2" to 10" x 8." Manuscript in ink. Light to moderate toning, fold lines, minor wear and soiling. $950. * The son of Jared Ingersoll [1749-1822], Continental Congressman and Signer of the U.S. Constitution, Charles Jared Ingersoll was a Philadelphia lawyer and Pennsylvania U.S. District Attorney and Congressman. This small but interesting collection of letters are representative of his equally distinguished legislative and judicial careers. The addressees in our group of letters include former U.S. President James Madison, lawyer and later Mayor of Philadelphia John Morin Scott and John Young Mason, jurist and then U.S. Secretary of the Navy. The letter to Madison introduces a French nobleman visiting America who wishes "to examine its institutions." The letter to Scott concerns The Postmaster General v. Eldred &c. of Ridgway, a legal case he was hearing in the Court of the U.S. Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In 1844, while serving as U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania in the 28th Congress, Ingersoll wrote a letter to Richard E. Stillwell providing a detailed response to a request for a professional memoir. Ingersoll's letter of July 17, 1844 to E.L. Burd of Chestnut Street in Philadelphia accedes with the latter's request for an introduction to the newly appointed U.S. Minister to France, William Rufus King. Burd's reply the next day was written upon the same bifolium and returned to Ingersoll with Burd's "sincere thanks." In 1847 Samuel Grice of Kensington in Philadelphia, trying of obtain a midshipman warrant in the navy for his nephew, Samuel J. Deacon, wrote Ingersoll for his help. When no immediate action was taken by the Secretary of the Navy, John Young Mason [1799-1859], Deacon himself appealed to Ingersoll via letter on April 17, 1847. In turn, Congressman Ingersoll (without endorsement or comment) forwarded the letter to the Secretary of the Navy that same day to support his case. Writing to an unnamed recipient, Ingersoll's letter of March 25, 1848 sends along an unaut.

Berlin: G. Reimer, 1833-1848. Seven volumes, comprising five octavo text and two atlas volumes (one quarto and one small folio), complete with the suite of 36 plates and maps; the text volumes with four folding plates, three handcoloured maps, and accompanying folding handcoloured chart; the quarto atlas of views with eleven plates, all double page and two folding; the small folio atlas of natural history plates with 17 numbered plates (two handcoloured); an excellent uncut set in recent period style half green morocco with gilt labels. One of the rarest and best accounts of nineteenth-century exploration in northeastern Asia, Siberia, Russian America, and the northern Pacific, with significant early scientific observations made in the Americas, including Sitka and San Francisco in late 1829. This set collects material published over a long period, effectively preserving the results of one of the lesser-known scientific voyages of the era for posterity. This ambitious work comprises a three-volume narrative account of Erman's travels in the years 1828-30, a two-volume natural history text, an atlas of geographical views, and a natural history atlas. It was issued in parts over a span of fifteen years and is almost never found absolutely complete as here: this fine set includes the frequently missing final volume of text comprising the second part of the scientific results (a further volume of narrative text was planned but never published); and it includes the full suite of 36 lithographed and engraved plates and maps, 8 of them accompanying the text, 11 forming an atlas of views, and 17 forming the natural history atlas.Adolph Erman, born in Berlin in 1806, was a physicist and traveller in the mould of Alexander von Humboldt. In 1828 he set out to travel around the world, joining Christopher Hantseen's expedition to carry out magnetic measurements in Siberia. They travelled eastward across Russia, and when the Hantseen expedition turned back at Kyakhta, Erman proceeded onward at his own expense to Yakutsk and Okhotsk. He crossed the Sea of Okhotsk to Kamchatka and journeyed across the peninsula to the port of Petrovalovsk, where he met Leontii Hagemeister whose ship was supplying Russian colonies in Alaska. Erman travelled with Hagemeister to Sitka and then on to San Francisco, Tahiti, the coast of South America, and then around the Horn to Europe, although the textual narrative closes with Erman in Kamchatka in late 1829.Erman spent several years after his return to Germany preparing his narrative; published in parts through the 1830s and 1840s, it contains detailed observations on zoology, botany, geography and ethnology, as well as accounts of the peoples and places he encountered. Included are descriptions of a trip down the Ob River, the culture of the Ostyanks and Samoyeds, a discussion of the geology and geography of the northern Urals, Yakutsk, and Okhotsk areas, and brief Yakut and Tungus vocabularies. He describes his wanderings over land and by river in Kamchatka in 1829, as well as details of the geography, geology, botany, volcanoes, zoology, meteorology, and ethnology of the peninsula. He also includes a vocabulary of the Kamchadal dialect. The two volume natural history text contains observations on latitude and longitude, as well as geomagnetic studies and magnetic observations made on land in Siberia, Kamchatka, Alaska, California, and South America, as well as on the Pacific Ocean. Apart from the wealth of scientific studies and readings Erman made in Russia, he performed the same tests and reported the same results for Sitka, Alaska in November, 1829, San Francisco in December of that year, all across the Pacific Ocean, and in Rio de Janeiro in the spring of 1830. The natural history texts, therefore, contain an impressive amount of early, accurate scientific material on Alaska, California, and South America. The plates in the geographic atlas (each of which contains at least two and up to four views) chiefly depict scenes in Kamchatka, showing forests, waterways, mountains and volcanoes. The natural history atlas features attractive lithographs of birds (the majority of the images), a sea otter from Sitka, fish, insects, and plants. Aside from some slight browning and a few spots an excellent uncut set in recent period style half green morocco with gilt labels.

London: William Smith,, 1848. Quarto. Original green vertically-ribbed cloth neatly refurbished at extremities of spine and corners, spine gilt lettered and with overall floral decoration, blind ornamental panel on sides, front cover with central gilt stamp of foliage and bluebells, yellow coated endpapers. 42 fine hand-coloured lithograph plates (with tissue-guards) after the Misses Loudon. Inner joints cracked but sound, light cockling to front free endpaper and prelims, touch of foxing to plates otherwise an attractive copy in the original cloth. First and best edition. "Mrs. Loudon's attractive flower books, first published in the forties, were reissued ten or fifteen years later with plates that had become coarsened and joyless" (Wilfrid Blunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration, 1950, p. 236). Jane Loudon née Webb, (1807-1858), "was to Victorian gardening what Mrs Beeton was to cookery. Her beautifully illustrated books on gardening and plant identification sold in their thousands and women all over the country were enthused by them to take up gardening as a hobby" (V&A online). She met her husband, the landscape gardener and horticultural writer John Claudius Loudon, when her extraordinary early novel The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century (1827) - a pioneering science fiction work which set futuristic technology, including a steam plough, among the trappings of Egyptomania - was reviewed favourably by Loudon in The Gardener's Magazine. The Scot decided to "seek out the acquaintance of the writer, whom he believed to be male" (ODNB) - and they were married seven months later.

PURSUANT TO PREVIOUS NOTICE, A MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF FREE SOIL, CONVENED AT THE TOWN HALL, IN SUFFIELD, ON THE 8TH DAY OF JULY, 1848. TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT.

[Hartford?: 1848 - Broadside, 8-1/4" x 13-5/8. Light margin wear. 'Released' rubberstamp of Connecticut Historical Society on blank verso. Very Good. The Meeting voted to offer these Proceedings "for publication to the Hartford Courant, the Hartford Times and the Charter Oak." Dated and signed in type at the end, "Samuel N. Reid, Secretary. David Hale, Chairman. Suffield, July 8th, 1848." This rare and significant broadside records the historic beginnings of the Free Soil Party, the precursor to the Republicans. The end of the Mexican War brought a divisive question to the forefront of American political life: Would the Territories acquired from Mexico be Slave or Free? Many Northern Democrats and Whigs, fearful that the "Slave Power" controlled their parties, experienced "deep and grave dissatisfaction." "Gen. Cass is the supple tool of Slave-holders and Slavery extensionists. Gen. Taylor is also opposed to the restriction of the limits of Slavery,-- and therefore we dare not trust either of them with the interests of Free Labor." The new Party takes the position advocated by Abraham Lincoln a decade later: disclaiming any intention to interfere "with the reserved rights and domestic institutions of any of the States of the Union, we are, at the same time, the determined and uncompromising opponents of the extension of Slavery over any territory now free." The Meeting calls for the selection of delegates "to represent this State, in the National Convention at Buffalo, on the 9th day of August, 1848," in order "to form an effective organization for the defence of the principles of Freedom, and to oppose the extension of Slavery." The Buffalo Convention nominated Martin Van Buren and John P. Hale for the presidency and vice presidency. OCLC 22947076 [2- CT Hist. Soc., CT State Lib.] as of March 2017.         AN ADDRESS DELIVERED IN THE CITY OF GALVESTON ON THE 22D OF FEBRUARY, 1848, THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH DAY OF WASHINGTON, AND OF THE BATTLE OF BUENA VISTA.

News Office. W. Richardson, Publisher,, Galveston: 1848 - 17, [3 blanks] pp. Stitched in original printed green wrappers. Light foxing, Very Good. In an attractive, modern quarter morocco slipcase, with gilt-lettered spine. The Handbook of Texas gives Smith some serious respect, calling this Surgeon General of the Texan Army and Yale graduate "the father of Texas medicine" and "the father of the University of Texas." The Address commemorates the success of American soldiers and "their veteran commander, General Zachary Taylor, whose generalship had been proved on many a triumphant battle field." The Americans were outnumbered at the Battle of Buena Vista. "The squadrons of Santa Anna, so full of confidence in the morning, had been broken and repulsed; under cover of the night they fled for safety. At Buena Vista was annihilated the military power of Mexico in the north-eastern provinces of that country." Smith lauds President Polk, the righteousness of American arms, and American war aims. He denounces "betrayers of the country" who deny the American claim to Texas, and who assert that Polk commenced the war unconstitutionally. His enthusiastic affirmation of Manifest Destiny rejoices in the freedom guaranteed by American institutions. "The Mexican war is a part of the mission, of the destiny allotted to the Anglo Saxon race on this continent. It is our destiny, our mission to civilize, to Americanize this continent." Smith emphasizes the immense importance of California to the United States; and the need to thwart British efforts to "hem in our Pacific territory, and control the two great thoroughfares of the overland trade."Winkler 57.         ESSAYS AND TALES BY JOHN STERLING, COLLECTED AND EDITED, WITH A MEMOIR OF HIS LIFE, BY JULIUS CHARLES HARE, M.A., RECTOR OF HERSTMONCEUX ..

London: John W. Parker, West Strand, 1848.. Octavo, two volumes: [1-4] [i] ii-ccxxxii [1-3] 4-504; [1-4] [1-3] 4-649 [650: printer's imprint], engraved frontispiece (portrait of Sterling) inserted in volume one, early three-quarter leather and cloth, marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. First edition. Published posthumously, this is the major repository of Sterling's shorter prose work: biographical sketches, epigrams, varied essays, and tales, most of which have a fantastic slant, including the short novel, THE ONYX RING (1838-1839), an important landmark in early Victorian fantasy. It originally appeared as part of a series of tales published in BLACKWOOD'S, "Legendary Lore." The editor of the present volume, J. C. Hare, was Sterling's tutor at Cambridge, where Sterling became acquainted with Coleridge and Wordsworth. In 1851 Thomas Carlyle published an eloquent and popular biography of Sterling as a response to Hare's memoir contained herein. THE ONYX RING is "a deeply felt fantasy in which an unhappy man is enabled to share the experiences of various others in order to search out the key to happiness. Though many of its characterizations are bitter, it refuses cynicism and despair. More earnest than most contemporary moralizing fantasies, and more intense than Anatole France's parable 'The Shirt,' it is in its way a minor masterpiece ... Ill health and premature death prevented Sterling from becoming one of the major writers of his generation, but the neglect into which his excellent fantasies have been allowed to fall is dreadfully unjust." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-146. "... certainly the most significant UK pioneer of fantasy ..." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 897. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1525. Bleiler (1978), p. 186. Reginald 13616. NCBEL III 1306. Binding marked and rubbed, but square and solid with a fine interior. A scarce work; OCLC reports just two library holdings in North America.
