      First Edition in book form by Bradbury and Evans, London: 1848. Very near fine in in a late 19th century binding of 3/4 pebbled, black leather covered boards over marbled paper with five raised bands on the spine with gilt text and decorations in the compartments, marbled end pages and the top edge of the text block is gilt. There is a minor area of 1/2" by 1/8" at the upper edge of the spine area where the leather is rubbed and the paper edge at the lower edges of the boards is rubbed through in one small area. The hinges are tight and strong. An octavo measuring 8 9/16" tall by 5 1/2" deep containing 624 pages. Tipped-in at the second free end page (and before the fly title page) is the front wrapper from #3 of the original part. Illustrated with 38 engraved plates and a frontispiece by H. K. Browne ("Phiz"). An eight line errata page follows the list of illustrations. The word "CaptainÓ is spelled correctly on the last line of page 324. (Eckel, p74)

In full fancy red leather by L Broca (152-156 Shaftesbury Ave, Soho), with 3 lined gilt tooling to upper and lower cover, edges and corners rubbed slightly, a couple of small marks. Spine has raised bands, decorative title and tooling between them, edges rubbed a little. Internally, fine decorative gilt tooling to turn-ins, green endpapers, binders small stamp to ffep, ink name (M- S- Eyre. April 1912) to ffep, half title present, frontis and the additional engraved titlepage with the left hand hook, titlepage, (xvi), 2, 624 pp, 38 pl (+ the frontis and vignette = 40pl), has the 2 line errata sheet, and the usual points list aint, hook, Delight, Capatin, XV & Party. A lovely copy in a superb binding. According to Eckels bibliography of Dickens this book was begun in Lausanne, Switzerland, continued in Paris, and finished in Brighton, Broadstairs and London!         Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son

      London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First Edition. Full Morocco. Fine. First edition in book form. Dickens' classic housed in a splendid Cosway-style binding that is in pristine condition. "Dombey and Son", though a beloved part of the Dickens' canon, is less often encountered in such a binding than other works by the master. This Cosway binding was created by Bayntun (Riviere) of Bath, England. The centerpiece medallion on the front board is a portrait of Dickens painted onto ivory by Miss C. B. Currie. Surrounding the cameo are floral vines, very much in the arts and crafts style, with deep green leaves, red flossoms and gilt lines. Similar motives ornament the compartments of the spine, and the rear board has matching border decoration to the front. All edges of the text block are gilt, and there is fine gilt detail surrounding the endpapers. The text block is tight, and the pages are mostly clean. There is one tiny closed tear in the margin of pp. 13/4. While there is some light foxing on the plates, overall the leaves, text or illustrated, are cleaner than almost always encountered. 8vo, xvi, [errata], [blank], 624 pp. 39 plates. The book comes with a protective cloth clamshell box.

        A Review of the Causes and Consequences of the Mexican War

      A historic specimen of the rare first printing, being the author's personal copy with a traceable line of provenance through two further generations of family, offered untouched in the original commissioned full calf, richly gilt binding. William Jay, son of John, first Chief Justice of the United States, was one of the most prominent abolitionists of the period and extensively involved in anti-war causes including as President of the American Peace Society (1848-58). He bequeathed the book to his son, John II [1817-94], important in New York State politics and abolitionist causes, who gifted it with presentation to his daughter, Augusta [1844-1878]. After her death, it became part of husband, Edmund Randolph Robinson's library. His bookplate with heraldic device of a roebuck rampant and motto, "Sola in Deo salus" (safety in God alone) faces the presentation page. Robinson [1834-1896], son of Moncure, the important civil engineer, and great-grandson of Edmund Randolph, first Attorney-General of the United States, was senior law partner at Robinson, Biddle & Ward of New York City and a key figure in civil service reform, involved in dismantling the Tweed Ring. A 20th century bookplate, an original b/w woodcut print with a California coastal view is on the verso, ex libris Roger K. Larson of Fresno, California. He compiled a celebrated Western Americana collection. WILLIAM JAY: opposed the Mexican American War (called in Mexico the U.S. Invasion) and sought unsuccessfully to prevent it. This critical work on the consequences of waging war as part of a Western expansionist policy has gone through an estimated 31 printings-editions. "The review aims to recommend the duty of preserving Peace, by exhibiting wickedness, the baseness, and the calamitous consequences of a victorious War, affecting all the ends for which it was engaged." (Page 4.) Jay became convinced the War was sought by Southern slave owners to extend slavery to new territories in the Southwest and West and presents this conspiracy theory in the book. JOHN JAY II: lawyer, anti-slavery activist, diplomat, and like his father, highly active in the Episcopal Church; organizer of the short-lived Free Soil Party and of the 1854 meetings at the Broadway Tabernacle that led to the 1855 formation of the New York Republican Party, appointed by President Grant U.S. Minister to Austria-Hungary (1869-75), investigated the New York Custom House as chair of U.S. 'Jay Commission' and a co-framer of the New York Civil Service Law. PRESENTATION: with quill & brown ink, at the head of the front endpaper; "Augusta Jay, from her affectionate father", authenticated as John II's hand, with his witty 'jumping frog f', distinctive capital j, customary ink flow and use of the Jay family's characteristic small case a and y. Lithograph map, with full Original Hand-Color, mounted to scroll posts on head and foot, framed, sheet dimensions: 30 x 23 inches, frame dimensions: 35 ¾ x 34 ¾ inches. In Very Good condition, tears along blank margins (with a few repaired), toning, 2 ½ inch tear to foot of map and a few pinholes nearby, two tiny tears to border vignettes, some light soiling and a pale damp-stain near bottom edge. A RARE AND HIGHLY DECORATIVE BROADSIDE MAP PROMOTING AMERICAN PARTIOTISM AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR, ONE OF THE MOST VISUALLY STRIKING EXPRESSIONS OF ?MANIFEST DESTINY?. This highly attractive map was issued as a broadside in the wake of the American victory of over her southern neighbor during the Mexican-American war. The year that this map was printed, Mexico was forced to cede almost half her territory at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (July 4, 1848). This magnificent map, or in the words of Carl Wheat, a ?flamboyant affair?, aimed to both educate the reader about the geography of the United States? vast new territories and to stoke American patriotic fervor. The top register of the composition is dominated by the familiar portrait of the George Washington, the revolutionary father of the nation, who is flanked by the two most prominent American heroes of the recent conflict, Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott. Taylor, known affectionately as "Old Rough and Ready," would be elected U.S. president later in 1848, and Scott?s successful campaign which resulted in the seizure of Mexico City in September 1847, effectively ended the war. The map of the United States and Mexico, which makes up the centerpiece of the tableau, is a dramatic and powerful cartographic expression of America?s ?Manifest Destiny?. The United States is shown to extend from sea to sea. Her new possessions include the vast new territory of ?New California?, occupying all of the modern states of California, Nevada, Utah, and most of Arizona. New Mexico runs down the length of the upper Rio Grande, while an enlarged Texas (which became a U.S. state in 1845), prominently occupies the center of the map. Also featured is the Oregon Territory, in the Pacific Northwest, which officially became part of the U.S. in 1846, while the vast ?Missouri Territory? and the ?Indian Territory? (the latter still reserved for Native Americans) occupy most the Great Plains. The vanquished Republic of Mexico, which lost almost half of her territory straddles the lower portion of the map. The panels that run along both sides of the map contain statistics regarding America?s established states and her new territories. The ?Panoramic View from New York to the Pacific Ocean by the Contemplated Oregon Railroad?, located between the map and the top register, is a highly stylised cross-section of the newly transcontinental America. This pictorial expression of ?Manifest Destiny? anticipates the construction of a transnational railway more than twenty years before such an ambition was realised. The lower portion of the map notably features the inspirational illustration, ?An American Exhibiting to the Sovereigns of Europe the Progress of his Country?, whereby the various old colonial powers are treated to the spectacle of America?s industrial prowess, figuratively represented by the by the ?Union? steamboat. In light of the Monroe Doctrine?, it serves as a none too subtle message to the traditional colonial powers that the Americas would henceforth be under the aegis of the United States. The ?Ornamental Map? is a visually striking and rhetorically powerful artifact relating to the Mexican American War and the fulfilment of America?s ?Manifest Destiny?. Four lithographic frontispieces (one handcolored portrait of Linnaeus, three handcolored plates); four handcolored lithographic additional titles; 182 lithographic plates, some printed in colors, all finished by hand, by Edwin Whitefield, David W. Moody, and others. Expertly bound to style in green half morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spines divided into six compartments by single horizontal fillets, lettered in the second and third compartments; marbled endpapers, brown speckled edges. Very good. A four-volume set of this complicated work, including the very rare fourth volume. A definitive collation for this work is problematic. As Stafleu notes: "The copies listed in THE NATIONAL UNION CATALOG show a great variation." According to Stafleu, there are three issues of Volume I, dated 1846, 1847, and 1848. The present set includes the 1848 third issue of the first volume, which should have a frontispiece, engraved title, and fifty plates. The present copy includes all those and is therefore complete. The second volume contains one more plate than called for by Stafleu (who notes only an additional titlepage, frontispiece, and forty-five plates), and the third volume conforms exactly to Stafleu's collation. The fourth volume is particularly rare in any condition, but, with the hiatus in the text between pages 130 and 147, is clearly incomplete. However, it is probably as issued to the original owner - according to Stafleu it should have forty-six plates, but the present example contains only forty-one. Expertly bound to style in green half morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spines divided into six compartments by single horizontal fillets, lettered in the second and third compartments, marbled endpapers, brown speckled edges. A rare complete set of this important American flora with charming plates, including the very rare fourth volume The collation for this work varies, as Stafleu notes: "The copies listed in The National Union Catalog show a great variation", but it is clear that two more plates are required in the first edition of vol.I (as here), than in the second edition of 1853. According to Stafleu, there are three issues of volume I, dated 1846, 1847, and 1848. The present set includes the 1848 third issue of volume I, which is complete with a frontispiece, lithographic additional title and fifty plates. The second volume contains one more plate than called for by Stafleu (who notes only an additional titlepage, frontispiece, and forty-five plates), and the third and fourth volumes conform exactly with Stafleu's collation. Letterpress title (verso blank), pp.[1-]5 letterpress text Sketch of the Journey. 20 hand-coloured lithographed views on 16 sheets, by Dickinson and Co., after Warre, 1 lithographic map, hand-coloured in outline with routes marked in red and blue. Small format slip from the publisher giving details of the various bindings available. Publisher's linen-backed light brown paper wrappers, letterpress title repeated on the upper wrapper, rear wrapper blank. Housed in a modern dark blue cloth chemise and dark blue morocco backed box. First edition, original hand-coloured issue of a work which contains the "only western color plates comparable in beauty to those by Bodmer" (Howes). An important record of the American west before it was touched by western civilization. This copy in the original wrappers. Captain Warre and Lieutenant Mervin Vavasour, of the Royal Engineers, left Montreal on 5 May 1845. They initially accompanied Sir George Simpson, governor of the Hudson Bay Company, who was making a tour of inspection of the Company's outposts. On reaching Fort Garry (plate 1) at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, they teamed up with Peter Skene Ogden (1790-1854), a Company Chief Trader who had vast experience of the West, the Columbia and the Rockies in particular. Travelling mainly on horseback, the journey from the fort over the Rockies to Fort Colville took them from 16 June to 12 August. This section of the journey is illustrated by five plates. They left Fort Colville in boats and made their way down the Columbia River arriving at the Pacific on 25 August (3 plates). They then spent the winter exploring Oregon Territory and the Pacific Coast, visiting the Company settlement on the Willamette River (2 plates), exploring the Columbia River (1 plate), visiting Fort George on the Columbia River (2 plates), Vancouver Island and Fort Vancouver (1 plate), Cowelitz River and Puget's Sound. Once the weather started to improve, Warre and Vavasour and a party of about 30 began their westward journey on 25 March 1846, again by boat, but this time against the current. Warre made sketches of Mount Hood (2 plates) during this journey. They arrived at Fort Walla Walla, a distance of about 200 miles, on 3 April. They then took to horses again, and taking a short cut of about 250 miles, made for Fort Colville across a desert landscape (1 plate). From Fort Colville they went up the Columbia by boat for about 250 miles, setting off to cross the Rockies on foot. After seven days their food ran out, but, fortunately, a search party sent out from the Company station at Jasper's House found them and guided them to safety. The station was on the Atthabasca River, and from here they again took to boats and swiftly descended a distance of nearly 400 miles in two and half days to Fort Assinboine. On horseback, they travelled 100 miles in three days to Fort Edmonton on the Saskatchawan River. Then, by boat, 500 miles down the river to Fort Carlton. Again on horseback, they crossed the prairie to Red River in ten days, a distance of about 450 miles, arriving back at Fort Garry on 7 June. Here they met up with Sir George Simpson and together returned by boat to Montreal, arriving on 20 July 1846. The background to the journey was semi-official and semi-secret: Warre and Vavasour were to make what amounted to a military reconnaissance of the Oregon Territory. American expansionists were making it clear that the uneasy joint occupation of Oregon by the United States and Great Britain was not equitable and were demanding that a northernmost frontier be established. The two officers, with the enthusiastic support of the Hudson Bay Company, were sent to gather information that would be of use in the negotiations. As Howes notes, Warre's dramatic depiction of the scenery, situations and incidents he encountered has resulted in "the only western color plates comparable in beauty to those by Bodmer." This copy without the dedication to the Hudson Bay Company executives, which, as Howes notes was not issued in all copies. This copy as the Abbey copy, in the original as published green cloth-backed wrappers with the front cover reproducing the title (price: 2 guineas uncoloured, or as here, with the plates coloured at £3 13s. 6d). Warre continued with his military career after his return to Great Britain, serving with distinction in both the Crimean and the New Zealand Maori wars, he was knighted for his military services and retired with the rank of General. In addition to the present work he also published a series of views in the Crimea, published in London in 1856, but the present work is his undoubted masterpiece.         INDIAN WIGWAM IN LOWER CANADA

      [Montreal: R. & C. Chalmers, 1848].. Lithograph, 15 x 20 inches (visible portion). Closely trimmed and laid down on paper. Four minute closed tears in border, two of which affect image. Very good. Matted and framed. A fine lithograph of an Indian scene in lower Canada, after an original painting by Cornelius Krieghoff of Montreal. Originally produced as part of a series of four lithographs called SCENES IN CANADA, the work as a whole is of the greatest rarity, and individual images are themselves very rare. The present image is the only one of the four focusing on Indian life, and is evocative and filled with ethnographic details. The illustration shows a three-quarter view of an Indian man sitting on a log near a body of water. He wears a round black hat and carries a herringbone paddle. A large birch bark canoe in the left foreground is shown nearly out of the water. He is speaking with a standing Indian man and seated Indian woman. The standing man holds a long rifle and wears a finely crafted jacket. The woman, looking away from the seated man, is covered under a blanket, holds a beaded bag, and wears beaded moccasins, and three tents are shown in the background. An Indian family gathers around a fire in front of one of the tents. Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-72) was born in Düsseldorf and studied art in Rotterdam. He came to the United States in 1837, where he served in the U.S. Army against the Seminole Indians in Florida. Krieghoff's skills as a topographical artist won him notice, and in the 1840s he moved to Canada. He spent the rest of his career painting the landscapes and peoples of Canada, and was particularly interested in depicting the French Canadians of Quebec province and local Indian tribes. Spendlove says that Krieghoff "was the inheritor of a long tradition in Dutch painting. One might say that he had brought to French Canada everything that the Dutch painters could contribute for the effective and sympathetic delineation of the life of the country and people; seeing with friendly interest and without bias, and recording with talent and precision."         Torrey’s Narrative: or, the Life and Adventures of William Torrey

      Bos., 1848.. b/w woodcuts. First edition. Torrey went to sea on a whaler out of New Bedford and served on several whaling, sealing and merchant voyages over 14 years. Included in the narrative are descriptions of his life in the Marquesas (where he participated in cannibalism), his visits to Hawaii, California, the Northwest Coast, South America, and other places. Torrey apparently had a quick temper, for he ran into trouble with several of his captains, and left ship a number of times. “Includes several whaling cruises in the Pacific in the 1830s, with visits to Hawaii, Marquesas...       Lettera in italiano autografa firmata "Alberto Della Marmora" indirizzata al "signor Avvocato". La Marmora esprime tutta la sua indignazione per i giudizi negativi pronunciati sul suo conto da un deputato dopo una seduta in Senato. "Le debbo però distinte grazie di avermi collocato tra quelli che sono ora ciò che erano una volta, e che lo debbono essere, e lo saranno sempre; accetto l’asserzione e la profezia. Soldato all'età di 17 anni, soldato sempre fui in tempo di guerra, e soldato sempre sarò tanto che durerà questa, e che batterà il mio cuore tutto italiano. Combattei nel 1809 e nel 1813 contro l'Austriaco; cercai di combatterlo nel 1821 per la qual cosa fui dismesso; lo combattei nel 1848, e non dispero di combatterlo ancora nel 1849". Alberto La Marmora, autore del celeberrimo "Voyage en Sardaigne", servì con il grado di generale durante le guerre napoleoniche e fu decorato personalmente da Napoleone I. In seguito entrò nell'esercito del Regno di Sardegna. 4 pagine su carta verdina, fittamente redatte le prime due, due righe e firma alla terza e altra firma alla quarta. Ottime condizioni.

Frontispiece by John Martin and 6 full page plates of which 3 are coloured including a geological map of England and Wales, plus 200 woodcuts in the text. Repairs to the upper joint, head and tail of volume I, else a very good set. One of Mantell's most popular works. "...none did more to enhance his name among the educated public than successive editions of 'The Wonders of Geology', a much read, widely influential invitation to the science and its latest discoveries..." The frontispiece, "The Country of the Iguanadon" by John Martin, is one of the earliest (the first edition appeared a decade earlier) to show a dinosaur supposedly in its natural habitat. "The genre itself... was new, and only a few paleontological localities were sufficiently well investigated to be reconstructed in such detail... [it] therefore became the first well-known attempt to re-create the actual appearance of dinosaurs... It effectively awakened Victorian imaginations to a saurian past that has continued to fascinate us ever since" Dean, 160.

      Daikokuya Kinzaburo, Tokyo, Japan - Artist: Utagawa Kunimasa IV 1848-1920. Series/Title: Unserialized actor print. Size: HxW 14 x 9.4 inches, each of three panels of a triptych. Oban tate-e. Date: Date seal is present but does not correspond to any listings in Andreas Marks. This probably indicates a date after 1875. Signed: Kunimasa hitsu. Publisher: Uncertain but believed to be Daikokuya Kinzaburo. Seal name Dai. Flourished 1863 to 1881 [or 1887]. Colors: Excellent colors, somewhat understated but not much faded. Principal colors are four shades of blue, and a rust red. Secondary colors include ecru, beige and gray-green. Condition: Margins are fully trimmed. Washi [?] paper. Unbacked. The three panels are carefully pasted together from the reverse side along either vertical edge of the center sheet. Minor tape residue observed at the top edge of the reverse of sheets, rather trivial. A ½ inch worm hole at the very top of each sheet, professionally backed. Also a similar backed worm hole 1/3 of way down seam between left and center sheets. Almost no soiling. Very Good as to impression. The lines are reasonably clean and clear, neither crisp nor mushy, suggesting a pull neither early nor late. Overall rated Very Good. Comments: Originally born Takenouchi Hidehisa, the artist used multiple go (artist names) during his career including Baido Hosai, Baido Kunimasa, Kochoro, Kunimasa IV, Kunisada III and Toyokuni V. Early in his career he used the go Kunimasa IV and Baido Hosai. In 1889 he succeeded as head of the Utagawa line and took the go Kunisada III. Later in his career he claimed the title Toyokuni IV, but that go was already taken (a fact that he refused to recognize), so he is referred to as Toyokuni V. Featuring the actors Bando Mitsugoro at right, Nakamura [first name undecipherable] at center, and [?] ____Nosuke at left.

Fundamental statute for secular government of the states of the church; key document in Italian liberty. Constitution proclaimed by Pius IX in response to agitation for constitutional government in the Papal domain. There were to be two chambers: the first, the alto consiglio, members nominated for life by the Pope and the second, 100 elected deputies. Laws adopted by these two chambers had to be scrutinized by the College of Cardinals, then submitted to the Pope for assent or rejection. Ecclesiastical affairs were exempt. This constitution's utility was never tested; demand for an extension of civil rights was eclipsed by the nationalist uprising against Austria that began in Milan on 18 March, four days after this was issued, which swept through Italy. This so-called "liberal constitution," while it addressed complaints that had built for decades and been ignored by the papacy, was hardly satisfactory for reformers and Pius IX, during his long reign as political reactionary, reacted by withdrawing even these modest concessions and destroying most copies of the Statuto Fondamentale. This copy belonged to Nicholas Brown (1792-1859), American Minister to Rome, whose sympathies toward nationalists resulted in the papacy's requesting his removal. Leather spine; marbled-paper boards. Dopo aver compiuto studi d'arte e aver lavorato come pittore di scene teatrali in Glasgow e Londra, David Roberts (1796-1864) compì un lunghissimo viaggio che lo portò a visitare buona parte dell'Europa, del Medio Oriente e del Nord Africa, località affascinanti ed esotiche che lo colpirono particolarmente e che egli provvide a ritrarre in numerosi acquerelli. Tornato in Inghilterra, riuscì a pubblicare i dipinti presso l'editore Moon di Londra il quale, oltre a pagarlo profumatamente per la concessione dei diritti, lo assunse come supervisore all'opera di Louis Haghe, che doveva riprodurre gli originali in litografia. Questo è il giudizio che Roberts espresse sull'opera di Haghe: "Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone". Extremely scarce first edition of the seminal publication that constitutes the very first printing of any part of the Communist Manifest, apart from the original German of 1848, and the very first summary of any part of the Communist Manifesto to appear in any language. With a PRESENTATION-INSCRIPTION from Ploos van Amstel on the front wrapper to S.H. van Lenn(ep?). The present publication constitutes a report on the proceedings of a case against the three leaders of the Association of Workers' Education in Amsterdam, by the two defense attorneys Ploos van Amstel and P.M. Nolthenius. In the introduction they call the Manifest "An inciting pamphlet, [which] with an incredible cynicism, reveals the most outrageous intentions". On page 3 of the present publication they furthermore quote (in German) the first paragraph of section I: "Die geschichte aller bisherigen Gesellschaft ist die Geschichte von "Klassenkämpfen." " - being the first printed quotation ever of this seminal sentence - and they provide a summary of sections I and II, together with the full reproduction of the ten claims at the end of section II. According to Andréas, this summary "is objective, except for the parts that concern marriage, family, and home, because they claim that the Manifest calls for abolition of these institutions" (p. 18). In the beginning of March 1848, the Association of Workers' Education in Amsterdam, the "Vereenigung tot zedelijke beschaving van de arbeidende klasse", founded in 1847, had received from London 100 copies of Marx and Engels' just published "Communist Manifesto". (See note 1 below).Inspired by the groundbreaking pamphlet that they had received, on March 24th, the Association organized a meeting of workers and artisans in order to discuss their conditions. Thousands of people were present. At the same time of the meeting, looting took place very close to the big square where they assembled. Although there was no evidence linking the ransacking to the meeting, the police used the looting as an excuse to disperse of the meeting and to arrest those in charge. The leaders of the Association, Karl Hanke, Christian Gödeke, and Gottlieb Martin, were thus arrested and brought before the Tribunal on June 6th, together with the looters. Even though the verdict for that of which they were accused should have been the death penalty (see note 2 below), all three of them were acquitted on June 24th., after which the defending attorneys published the present pamphlet, describing the trial proceedings as well as the contents of that most controversial publication that had come over from England and caused such uproar. (See note 3 below).On June 26th, Gödeke invited those interested to come and see for themselves the publication that had been discussed on March 24th (i.e. the Communist Manifesto). Although the preface of the first edition of the Communist Manifesto states that it has been translated into several different languages (English, French, Italian, Dutch, Danish) which should all have appeared the same year, none of them actually did. Not a single copy of any of these alleged translations has ever appeared and it is evident that, although some of them had been prepared as early as 1848, they only came out years later (the first of them being the English, 1850). According to the Communist Manifesto bibliography (Andréas), the present publication contains the very first recorded printing of any mention in any form and in any language of the Communist Manifesto - excluding, of course, the first printing of the text earlier the same year. An incunable of 19th century photography: one of 25 large-paper presentation copies of Stirling's groundbreaking study of Spanish art illustrated with photographs by Henry Fox Talbot's assistant. One of the earliest and rarest of all photographically illustrated books and the first photographically illustrated book on art. "The existence of this fourth volume of Talbotypes has enabled the Annals of the Artists of Spain to be hailed as the first art history book to be illustrated with photographs ... this volume marked the beginning of a revolution in the methodology of art history, in which photographs and photographically illustrated books would become essential tools" (Macartney). In the mid-19th century, Spanish art was not well studied or appreciated outside of Spain. On a Grand Tour journey to Spain and the Middle East in the early 1840s, however, Stirling was greatly influenced by the art of the region and began collecting in earnest. Upon return to England, and seeing a very slender body of English work on the subject, he conceived the present work. After a draft of the work was rejected by publisher William Murray in 1845, Stirling decided to privately-print this groundbreaking history which introduced the artists El Greco, Velazquez, Murillo, Ribera and Goya to much of the English speaking world. Of the text, Stirling would print 750 regular copies (of which 25 were specially bound), and 25 large-paper copies (like the present), described in the limitation: "with red marginal lines, proof impressions of the plates on India paper, and two extra plates." To these large-paper, presentation copies, a fourth volume was added, containing 66 illustrations reproducing examples of Spanish art using "the beautiful photographic process invented by Mr. Fox Talbot" (vol. IV Preface). The photographs in the fourth volume are by Nicolaas Henneman, William Fox Talbot's assistant, who is described by Stirling as "the intelligent agent of the inventor" (vol. IV Preface). It is unclear what prompted Stirling to illustrate the presentation copies using the new art of photography. On his initial tour in Spain, like many of the tourists from that period, he brought with him a camera lucinda. His interest in photography was no doubt further advanced by the publication of Talbot's Pencil of Nature (1844-46) and Sun Pictures of Scotland (1845), both of which had avid following among the Scottish elite. Macartney further suggests that Stirling would have realized the duality between the exact reproductive nature of photography and the defining realism portrayed in Spanish art relative to Italian art. Nevertheless, using photography to illustrate these Spanish masterpieces was not without considerable difficulty. Indeed, the art selected to be photographed was greatly limited by size and the necessity of bringing the art outside into the sunlight to be photographed. Early on, Stirling also realized the delicate nature of Talbotypes, writing to a bookdealer in 1856 - just eight years after publication - that a client not rebind the photographs into the text of the Annals (i.e. instead of their being in a separate volume, as intended), writing, "He is lucky if his set is not fading, or faded; wh. I fear all have, is further increased, according to some people's opinion, if the plates are faced by paper of some particular quality..." (quoted in Macartney). Many of the extant copies of the photographs show considerable retouching; the present set without these crude repairs. The experimental nature of this incunable of photography is further evidenced by the strict limitation of copies printed. The large-paper issue was limited to only 25 sets. However, from Henneman's records which have survived, 50 sets of the photographs were printed. Macartney suggests that these 25 additional sets were printed and mounted on smaller sheets to accompany the 25 "specially bound" sets of the regular issue text; another possibility is that they could have been printed to supply replacement photographs to the presentation copies. Either way, it stands to reason, that the best prints were selected for the deluxe, large-paper presentation issue. "Because of its method of illustration [Stirling's Annals] is to be regarded as the cornerstone of all modern artistic connoisseurship, for it contained the first exactly repeatable pictorial statements about works of art which could be accepted as visual evidence about things other than mere iconography. It was no longer necessary to put faith in the accuracy of the observation and skill of the draughtsmen and the engravers. These reports were not only impersonal but they reached down into the personality of the artists who made the objects that were reproduced" (Ivins).The four-volume, deluxe, large-paper, presentation issue with the photographs is exceedingly rare. Of the 25 copies which were printed, Macartney estimates that only 16 are extant (including examples in the British Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hispanic Society of America, Museo del Prado, and the National Library of Scotland). The present copy, in a glorious binding by Bedford, is inscribed by Stirling to noted solicitor and Writer to the Signet John Dundas, who was a relative of the Stirling family, and a close associate and neighbor of the author's father. The second part with expert repairs to the spine and rear cover. Some soiling and foxing to covers and contents. Generally Very Good and exceptionally scarce in the wrappers. Two octavo (5-1/4" x 7-11/16") volumes in the original printed wrappers. First published in England in December 1847, this American edition was published in April 1848 simultaneously in wrappers (two volumes at 25 cents each) and in cloth (one volume at 75 cents), with copies in cloth much more common than those in wrappers. It was this American edition which led to the "unmasking" of the Brontes. The author is wrongly identified on the covers and the title page as being that of "JANE EYRE," which was also first published in 1847 but was of course by Emily's sister, Charlotte. Harper & Brothers, acting on the assumption of Thomas Newby, the Bronte's British publisher, that the sisters (writing under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell) were, in fact, one person, saw nothing untoward in attributing WUTHERING HEIGHTS to the "author of JANE EYRE." It was to clear up this misunderstanding that the Brontes made their dramatic 1848 visit to their British publishers to reveal their true identity. The various film adaptations of the novel include the classic 1939 version directed by William Wyler and starring Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy. It was voted best film of the year by the New York Film Critics in preference to the Oscar-garlanded GONE WITH THE WIND. The English Edition of the previous year will set you back an easy 6 figures.
