Talboys and others in 1833 from: Ideen u?ber die Politik, den Verkehr und den Handel der vornehmsten Vo?lker der alten Welt. Heeren was a German historian, whose chief merit was that he looked at the ancient world from a fresh point of view. Instead of merely narrating their political events, he examined their economics, their constitutions and their financial systems, and thus was able to throw new light on the development of the Old World. He possessed vast and varied learning, perfect calmness and impartiality, and great power of historical insight, and is now looked back to as the pioneer in the movement for the economic interpretation of history.         The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Erebus and Terror: The Birds of New Zealand.

London: E.W. Janson, -. First edition. 1846 - Pp. 39 + 37 fine monochrome lithographic plates. Later gray cloth with the spine lettered in black, the original green printed wrappers are bound in at rear, sm folio (12.5 x 10 inches). The section by George R. Gray was first published in 3 parts about 1844/1845 and included 22 plates. The volume remained unfinished until 1875, when the work was edited by R. Bowdler Sharpe, who added an appendix and the remaining 15 plates. The 37 plates are numbered 1, 1*, 2 to 11, 11*, 13 to 20, 20*, 21, XXI*, 23 to 35 (collated complete as issued). The expedition of the H.M.S. Erebus and Terror to Antarctica took place in 1839-1843 under the Command of Capt. J.C. Ross - one of the expedition's principal discoveries was the Ross Ice Shelf. The various volumes documenting this significant expedition were edited by John Richardson and John Edward Gray. Any of the published results of this Antarctic exploratory voyage are quite scarce; this is especially true for the volume on the 'Birds of New Zealand' with exquisitely detailed lithographed plates. This work was issued with monochrome (uncolored plates); some copies were hand-colored at a later date. The last hand-colored copy I sold was priced at $4500. This copy is in the original uncolored state. The initials of a previous owner appear on the front green wrapper. The text, plates and cloth binding are bright and clean; a fine copy.

Reminiscences of Australia with Hints of the Squatter's Life

      W. N. Wright, London 1846 - Duodecimo, frontispiece and folding plate; joints slightly rubbed yet a lovely copy in publisher's blind stamped cloth with gilt lettering. Uncommon account Leichhardt's first expedition. Christopher Hodgson accompanied Ludwig Leichhardt on his first expedition of 1844. Shortage of provisions for the long journey prompted Leichhardt to order Hodgson's premature return to Brisbane about four weeks after departure. Hodgson's diary of his time with Leichhardt is first published in this book. Indeed, some time after his return to Brisbane a rumour circulated that Leichhardt and his party had been massacred, prompting Hodgson to launch a relief part that departed in July of 1845. After seven weeks traversing hard country they found assurance that rumours of the massacre were indeed unfounded. This book includes a leaf announcing the successful arrival of Leichhardt's expedition in Port Essington and the sad death of Hodgson's 'old comrade' John Gilbert. The leaf states the sheets of the book had gone to press before this news was received. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

On the correlation of physical forces: Being the substance of a course of Lectures delivered in the London Institution in the year 1843

Charles Skipper, London 1846 - FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of Grove's proposal of the conservation of energy: "the earliest general account of the principle." In 1842, "Sir W.R. Grove, English judge and man of science, known by his invention of a voltaic cell, explained in a lecture the idea of the interrelation of natural powers, an elaborated it in a book published in 1846 under the title of The Correlation of Physical Forces. This and the independent study in 1847 by the great German physiologist, physicist and matematician H.L.F. von Helmholtz, Ueber die Erhaltung der Kraft, contained the earliest general account of the principle now known as the 'conservation of energy'" (Dampier, A History of Science). "In this essay. Grove argued that all physical forces such as electricity, heat, light, magnetism, and so forth, should be regarded as being correlated, or mutually inter-related. Any one of these forces could be used to produce any of the others such that no particular force could be said to be the particular cause of another. Under particular circumstances any one of them might be the cause and any of the others the effect. In many ways, the essay was an argument against traditional notions of causality. Grove advanced a large number of experimental examples from the various branches of the physical sciences to substantiate his claims. He suggested that the main task of the natural philosopher was to demonstrate how this principle of correlation operated universally" (Oxford DNB). First state: Regarded as the offprint or "unpublished" state, with "by order of the managers of the London Institution, at the request of the proprietors" on title. Contained in a sammelband with a large collection of physics and engineering texts about electricity, electro-magnetism, and telegraphy (22 papers total) in various languages, with a very interesting booklet on the use of the first telegraphic cable between Europe and United-States. Grove's work is complete, with title, Preface, and 52 pages of text. London: Charles Skpper, 1846. Octavo, nineteenth-century half-red morocco over marbled boards. With cropped inscription (from Grove?) on title. A little scuffing to binding, otherwise fine. RARE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The fourteen chapters in the work cover such topics as bleaching, spot removal, repair of tears and holes, restoring the blackness of an impression, print conservation and the particular issues associated with works printed on parchment, satin and other unusual materials. The Essai was printed in a small edition of 400 copies and quickly went out of print. Some time afterwards Bonnardot issued a supplement to the Essai containing 15 pages of revisions to his original text and a fifteenth chapter on “The restoration and provisional binding of rare books”; this supplement is included here. In 1858 Bonnardot published a revised and greatly enlarged second edition of the Essai, portions of which were translated into English in Alfred Buck’s Book Repair and Restoration (1918). 1250

Toning and light soiling to margins, archivally repaired tear entering the decorative border at centre of upper edge, pinholes in three corners, occasional light soiling in image. Good condition. It is from the 1846 edition of Mitchell's New Universal Atlas (with a plate number of 36 outside the neat line). A FINELY-BOUND FACSIMILE LIVRE DE MARIAGE DECORATED AND EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED TO COMMEMORATETHE ROYAL WEDDING OF PRINCE FERDINAND OF SAVOY AND PRINCESS ELIZABETH OF SAXONY. The basis of the volume is a chromolithographic livre de mariage printed for the binder and publisher Gruel by the company of Engelmann and Graf. Godefroy Engelmann I (1788-1839) had developed a pioneering, fully-automated process for colour lithography in 1836 and founded the company Soci?t? Engelmann, P?re et Fils with his son Godefroy II (1814-1897) in 1837, which became Engelmann et Graf in 1842, and quickly established itself as the leading company in France for the printing of facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts. The binder Pierre Paul Gruel died in c. 1848, and his business was continued by his widow -- who married Godefroy Engelmann II in 1851 -- and his son L?on (1841-1923). The Livres de mariage produced by Engelmann et Graf were available in a variety of forms, and this example, based on manuscripts in the Biblioth?que royale (including the Grandes Heures of Anne of Brittany and Les tr?s riches heures of Jean de France, duc de Berry), wasprepared in a particularly luxurious form for the marriage of Prince Ferdinand, Duke of Genoa and Princess Elizabeth of Saxony on 22 April 1850. Five leaves bearing the calligraphic text of Ferdinand and Elizabeth's wedding service, decorated by hand with their arms and monogram and illuminated with painted initials and infills, have been inserted before the chromolithographic text, and heavily painted and gilt engravings of five Saints, including Ferdinand and Elizabeth, have been added, as has a preliminary painted armorial before the printed title. The binding is unsigned, but was probably executed by Gruel, and is richly ornamented with metal furnishings and an enamelled plaque bearing the arms of Savoy and Saxony. Lot Notes: Prince Ferdinando, Duke of Genoa, (1822-1855) married at The Nymphenburg Palace, Dresden, Elisabeth of Saxony, (1830-1912) thedaughter of Johann I, King of Saxony in 1850. The younger son of Carlo Alberto, King of Sardinia, (1798-1849) and brother of Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, (1820-1878) he was created Duke of Genoa in 1831 and was an Admiral in the Sardinian navy. His daughter, Margherita, (1851-1926) married her first cousin Umberto I, King of Italy, Livre

        Am Dorfrand, 1846

1846. Bleistift auf Papier, unten rechts signiert und datiert: "J. Höger. 1846.", verso bezeichnet: "No 93. Jos. Hoeger.

Oper schon seit Jahren an diesem wunden Fleck.

      - Boston Med. Surg. J., 35/13. - Boston, October 28, 1846, 8°, pp.249-268, OBrosch. First Edition, in the extreme rare original wrappers! - "The name of E.R.Smilie may be added to the list of those who came close to discovering anesthesia, and he came as close as anyone. He had the idea of abolishing pain in surgery, and he was actually using ether and opium by inhalation; but he considered the ether to be only a vehicle and attributed the analgesic effect to the opium." - "His article is curious, significant, and not little pathetic. It was published on October 28, 1846, twelve days after Morton's successful demonstration of ether anesthesia, but Smilie had surely submitted his work before that date. Bigelow's paper, based on Morton's exhibition of ether anesthesia, did not appear until November 18, 1846." -cf.         The inhalation of an ethereal vapour to prevent sensibility to pain during surgical operations (pp.356-359). + Peirson, A.L.: Surgical Operations with the aid of the "New Gas" (pp.362-363).

      - Boston Med. Surg. J., 35/18. - Boston, Wednesday, December 2, 1846, 8°, pp.349-368, orig. wrappers in a fine slip case. First Edition, in the extreme rare original wrappers! - Upon the advice of friends, Morton, through his agent, Edward Warren, presented a memorial to the 29th Congress, 2nd Session, to have his priority to the ether discovery established and to request an award for the use of his patent (U.S. Patent No. 4848, November 12, 1846), which at that time was so important for the use of ether to provide comfort and care to those wounded in the war with Mexico. This first of many presentations to the U.S. Congress was heard by the Select Committee of the House of Representatives, consisting of five members, four of whom were physicians.* They listened but made no report, and their deliberations were not published. Members of the committee were apparently confused by the slanderous campaign against Morton by a group of dentists and a few physicians in Boston and vicinity, led by Josiah F. Flagg (1789-1853), a practicing dentist. This group's effort came to be known as the "Dental Manifesto" and was effective in ruining Morton's reputation, dental practice and income. -cf. Eugene H. Conner - On the back cover we find W.T.G.Mortons add "To Surgeons and Physicians" and M.P.Hanson's add "Surgical Operations without Pain" - "M.P.Hanson, M.D., 10 Tremont Temple, Boston, is preapared to furnish Dentists and Surgeons generally with apparatus and instructions for the use of the COMPOUND VAPOR ANODYNE.
