[New York: , 1845]. [New York. 1845]. Bifolium, (121/2 x 8 inches) printed circular, [2]pp. Two lines of contemporary holograph annotations at end, old folds, very good. The New York and Harlem Rail Road Company present in this hastily composed circular means and proposals for expansions and connections for Westchester and Putnam counties, and, specifically, to building a rail road to Albany. The circular also lays out earnings and expenses over the course of 1843 to 1845, and begs the reader to consider the importance of legislative support, asking: "If this effort fail [sic], this City will be without a Rail Road to the Erie Canal for years to come, while the pro- [sic] products of the vast west, are diverted from their natural destination at Albany, and pour themselves daily and hourly into the city of Boston. The very products too, let it be remembered, which were the chief element in the present greatness of New-York." OCLC locates one copy. .

Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842 and to Oregon and California in the Years 1843-44

Washington: Gales and Seaton, 1845. Senate Issue. Hardcover. 691pp. Octavo [23 cm] Rebound in sturdy tan cloth. New endsheets and flyleaves. Good plus. The plates and pages are foxed, and there are sporadic tidemarks of varying sizes on the pages as well. 22 single-sided plates (views, botanical, fossils) and 3 maps (missing the large folding map by Charles Preuss, and the map at p. 247). John Fremont's expeditions of 1842 and 1843-44 were the most spectacular reconnaissance of the American West since Lewis and Clark. Performed under the auspices of the Army Bureau of Topographical Engineers, the expedition's published reports and maps brought a factor of dependability and trustworthiness that would aid American settlement of the West. Fremont's report was the most detailed observations of the western territories at the time. The country covered by the report was previously terra incognito--Brigham Young is said to have used both the report as a guide in bringing the Mormon people West. Utah was then part of Mexico and would first become Deseret and then Utah territory. One of the seminal works for any western or Utah collector. Howes F-372(Senate Issue). Wagner/Camp 115.2

        Original watercolor signed

1845. Signed. CRUIKSHANK, George. Original watercolor signed. No place, no date. Glazed watercolor on card, measuring 5 by 4-1/4 inches; handsomely framed, entire piece measures 11-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches. $3800.Wonderful original watercolor of haphazardly stacked books by George Cruikshank, signed by him at the bottom of the image, handsomely framed. The striking piece is a particularly accomplished example of Cruikshank's work as a miniaturist. Here, he has painted a detail from a library or book shop and shown books carelessly stacked, including some falling open to present their contents. Cruikshank's background as an illustrator is clear in the page edges, the carefully drawn portrait inside one book, and each painstakingly rendered spine. Serious Cruikshank pieces are rare and, for the collector, a watercolor such as this is the crowning glory of a collection. Fine condition.

The Works of that Learned and Judicious Divine. With an Account of His Life and Death by Isaac Walton. Arranged by the Rev. John Keble. [3 Vols.]

At the University Press, Oxford 1845 - Three volumes. Pp. [4], cxiii, 488; [ii], 610; [ii], 755. Folding genealogy and facsimile MS plates. Contemporary crimson calf bordered by double gilt fillets, elaborately gilt-panelled spine between raised bands, black morocco labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Only light wear to bindings, bookplate on pastedown of first volume, but overall an elegantly bound set in fine condition. The Third Edition of John Keble's [1792-1866] arrangement of Hooker's works, first published in 1836. It remains the standard version to this day. In addition to his great treatise, "Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity", this edition contains seven of Hooker's sermons as well as several occasional pieces. Of the eight books of the "Laws of Ecclesi astical Polity", only five appeared in Hooker's lifetime, the first four in 1594, and the fifth in 1597. The sixth and eighth books were published posthumously in 1648, and the seventh finally in 1662. The authenticity of the last three books, compiled from Hooker's manuscript notes, has been much disputed. What is not in dispute is the enormous influence of his work on subsequent religious and philosophical thought. His defense of the Elizabethan Settlement of 1559 led him to elaborate a theory of "natural law" as the expression of God's supreme reason and the foundation of all ecclesiastical and civil polity. He thus justified the laws and structures of the English Church, including royal supremacy, against both the Puritan insistence on the absoluteness of Scripture, and the Roman Catholic appeal to the immutability of tradition. Hooker's political theories had implications far beyond church polity. In developing an essentially contractual theory of government, he anticipated the theories of later thinkers, especially Locke and Rousseau. Size: Octavo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Ein unverwüstlich Bilderbuch, geziert mit manchem Fibelspruch!

Darmstadt: Bauerkeller's Prägeanstalt, (c. 1845). Oblong octavo. 18ff. of relief plates depicting animals and plants within a floral frame, all in white against a blue background, with text above and below printed letterpress. Unusual and apparently unrecorded children's picture book illustrated with relief prints that resemble Wedgewood porcelain. The eighteen plates depict animals or plants framed by a decorative border, with the identification printed above the image in three languages (German, French, and English). Below each image is a quatrain in German. The printers, Georg Michael Bauerkeller and his stepbrother Georg Leonhart, invented a printing process for relief printing of maps, which they called "Geomontographie." The process involved a combination of letterpress and lithographic printing with blindstamping and papier-mâché, and they published a number of maps and city plans in the 1840s. One children's book with a Bauerkeller imprint is recorded in OCLC, but this title is unrecorded. Front free endpaper excised, shelfmark to top of first plate, not affecting image. Otherwise, internally clean and bright in the publisher's cloth-backed printed boards, which are toned, with rubbed extremities and corners. Overall, very good.

        Die Friedenskirche, Potsdam, 1856. Original-Photographie. Vintage. Salzpapier-Abzug. Verlagsseitig montiert. Köln, verlegt durch F.C. Eisen, 1856.

- Vgl. Auslöser Potsdam, 29 - Heidtmann, Wie das Photo., S. 55. 2000 gr. [Attributes: First Edition]
