I Montecchi e i Capuleti Melodramma in due Atti di Felice Romani. [Piano-vocal score]

Milano: Giovanni Ricordi [PNs 5224/5259, 5225-34], 1845. First Edition, later issue. Published in 1831, the first issue does not contain the dedication to the Catanesi. Because Verdi's name is one of those printed to the upper wrapper, the present copy was most probably issued after that composer's first operatic successes in the early 1840s. Lippmann, p. 382. Weinstock p. 247. I Capuleti e i Montecchi was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on March 11, 1830. "... the subject of star-crossed lovers enabled Bellini to play from strength as a purveyor of tender, elegiac melody. Here, as in Zaira, he infused the simple, syllabic vocal writing of La straniera with melismatic bravura, preparing the way for that perfect synthesis of expression and virtuosity he attained in La sonnambula. As the last important opera with a breeches-part hero, I Capuleti survived throughout the century as a favourite war-horse for star sopranos such as Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient and Johanna Wagner, despite the hostility of progressives such as Liszt, who dismissed it as intolerably old-fashioned, and the ambivalence of Wagner, who loved its melodies while deploring its dramatic conception." Simon Maguire, Elizabeth Forbes, and Julian Budden in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Original publisher's printed wrappers with names of various composers printed within decorativeborder. 1f. (title), [i] (dedication), [i] (named cast list and table of contents), 188 pp. Engraved. Uncut. Series title ("Opere Teatrali Complete") printed to upper wrapper. Cast incluces Giuditta Grisi, Carradori-Allan, Antoldi, Bonfiglio, and Ranieri Pocchini. Wrappers moderately creased, worn, and soiled, with some tears, creasing, and slight loss to spine and margins. Some light foxing; some tears and creasing to blank lower inner corners of approximately one-third of leaves, not affecting music. A good, wide-margined copy overall.

A GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHY:; CONTAINING SIMPLE AND PRACTICAL DETAILS OF THE LATEST AND MOST IMPROVED PROCESSES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PICTURES BY THE CHEMICAL ACTION OF LIGHT: INCLUDING PHOTOGENIC DRAWING, CALOTYPE, DAGUERREOTYPE, CRYSOTYPE, CYANOTYPE, ANTHOTYPE, FERROTYPE, ENERGEATYPE, TITHONOTYPE AND THERMOGRAPHY

Horne, Thornthwaite and Wood, London 1845 - 8vo., 5 - 62 pp., 3 engraved plates. Lacking preliminary leaves through the title page and the catalogue of photographic supplies, p. 63 - 72. Removed from a bound volume, this has added contemporary leaves of manuscript formulas by Dr. Hugh Welch Diamond. Very good. Housed in a paper over boards folder and slipcase with printed paper label. This is the second edition, enlarged, of one of the earliest British manuals which includes Talbot's calotype process, multiple other paper processes, as well as the latest advances in the daguerreian process. Although lacking the title page and the catalogue of photographic apparatus and supplies, this copy was owned by Dr. Hugh Welch Diamond and contains his marginal notes and corrections to the text as well as 14 pages of manuscript formulas and an index leaf.Hugh Welch Diamond (1809 - 1886) entered the field of medicine first at the Royal College of Surgeons beginning in 1824. He opened a private practice in Soho Square in 1834, after he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1840, he switched his interest to psychiatry and adopted the practice of photography, which he utilized both professionally and as an avid amateur with landscapes, portraits and still life settings. He was appointed the superintendent of the Female Department of the Surrey County Lunatic Asylum in 1848 and continued in that capacity until 1858. His belief that photography was linked to empirical truth made it a valuable diagnostic tool; he was the first to use photography as such, earning the title of "father of clinical psychiatric photography." His portraits of the insane have been widely studied and reproduced. Dr. Diamond frequently published articles on photography in NOTES AND QUERIES, was a founding member of the Photographic Society of London, serving as secretary 1859 - 1869, a member of the Photographic Exchange Club, and was the editor of the PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL for ten years. In 1867, he served as a juror for photography at the Paris Exhibition. His friends and and colleagues included, Francis Bedford, P. H. Delamotte, Robert Howlett, John Dilwyn Llewelyn, Lady Caroline Nevill, H. P. Robinson, Robert Hunt, W.H.F. Talbot, F.S. Archer, and many others. The circumstances of Diamond's interest in photography has yet to be reported; however, he was an ardent practitioner by the early 1840s. In 1840, Jabez Hogg entered the medical profession under Dr. Diamond and in 1843, he published his first photographic manual. In 1847, Frederick Scott Archer, was introduced to the calotype process of Talbot through his friend, Dr. Diamond, who was a frequent correspondent with Talbot. In 1851, F.S. Archer published his wet collodion process, which revolutionized the speed and sharpness of the photographic paper print associated with Talbot's process. All the above lead to this unique copy of Thornthwaite's manual of 1847. Following the last page of the printed text, 18 leaves of a contemporary pale blue woven stock, and 1 leaf of white stock were stitched to the text block; of these, 14 pages contain manuscript formulas for: calotype negatives, Taylor's positive solution, Middleton's process (albumen), collodion process on glass, Read's solution for developing, Archer's collodion formula, Muller's process on paper, Talbot's instantaneous process, Alfred Rosling's formula for bromo-iodized collodion, and recovery of waste silver, etc. The remaining blue leaves are blank, followed by the manuscript index. Written towards the bottom of the twelfth page of manuscript formulas, "The above takes foliage, reds, & yellows, better than anything I have ever used. W.H.D." Preceding the first page of text are 2 blank leaves of the same pale blue paper. On the first printed page is the pencil number "8". What may be concluded is that this manual, and at least 7 other texts, were bound up for the personal use of Dr. Diamond, with the addition of blank pale blue paper on which he could add his comments and additional fo [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Headlong Hall and Nightmare Abbey (First American Edition)

Wiley and Putnam, NY 1845 - Tan three-quarter leather with raised hubs over marbled paper-covered boards, black leather spine label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Small 8vo. Somewhat unusually, the title page states "First American Edition" under the main titles; the author's name, however, does not appear. 172 pps. A tight copy, rubbed about the edges and gutters and somewhat scuffed along the spine strip. Foxing to the blanks and very occasionally in the text. Still a perfectly acceptable copy. "Headlong Hall" was Peacock's first novel, originally published in England in 1815. Set at a Welsh country manor, it is peopled by a set of characters, each embodying a particular intellectual obsession and is replete with comic and satirical elements. "Nightmare Abbey" (originally published in England in 1818), was Peacock's most famous and enduring work, filled with gothic motifs like shadowy manor houses with secret rooms and sliding panels. In point of fact, the book is a series of satirical romances poking fun at some the major figures of the Romantic Movement; Byron appears as Mr. Cypress, Coleridge (Mr. Floskey) and Shelley (Scythrop Glowry).         Can Abolitionists Vote or Take Office under the United States Constitution? The Anti-Slavery Examiner. No. 13

American Anti-Slavery Society, New York 1845 - 39 pp. Advocating "no union with slaveholders," Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), on the executive committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and one of the most radical abolitionists of the time, argues that no abolitionist can conscientiously vote or hold office since the Constitution acknowledges the validity of slavery. "Slaveholders monopolize the offices and dictating the policy of the government -prostituting the strength and influence of the Nation to the support of slavery here and elsewhere- trampling on the right of the free states, making the courts of the country their tools." This was the Garrisonian position which argued it was pointless to attempt to banish slavery by electoral means; instead, the free states should secede. Any compromise with evil is fatal. One of the most important documents by the Radical Abolitionists. Sabin 81919. Dumond p.10. LCP. Afro-Americana, 2nd ed. Suppl. 1712. Amer. Imprints 455202.         Literary Emporium The Raven 1845

      J. K. Wellman 1845 - Vol. 1, No. 1 (January-February 1845) to No. 6 (November-December 1845), comprising six bi-monthly issues, one year, bound in publisher’s elaborately decorated leather. Octavo. Binding VG+, with edge wear. Contents near fine, with the usual foxing. J.K. Wellman conceived his Literary Emporium as an annual in the making. So while it presented as a bi-monthly magazine in wrappers, once it was bound it resembled a gift book. This, the first year of the Literary Emporium (it lasted two more), features six hand-colored botanicals, six steel engravings, and a host of literary miscellany, the most noteworthy of which is the very last entry, Poe’s “Raven”, which fills the final few pages of the November issue (and was published sometime in October). This constitutes the second periodical appearance of “The Raven” – the first being in the January 1845 issue of the American Whig Review – but it is the first time it appeared under Poe’s name. Though not scarce, the Literary Emporium is difficult to find in nice condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[New York: , 1845]. [New York. 1845]. Bifolium, (121/2 x 8 inches) printed circular, [2]pp. Two lines of contemporary holograph annotations at end, old folds, very good. The circular also lays out earnings and expenses over the course of 1843 to 1845, and begs the reader to consider the importance of legislative support, asking: "If this effort fail [sic], this City will be without a Rail Road to the Erie Canal for years to come, while the pro- [sic] products of the vast west, are diverted from their natural destination at Albany, and pour themselves daily and hourly into the city of Boston. The very products too, let it be remembered, which were the chief element in the present greatness of New-York." OCLC locates one copy. .
