L'EDUCATION DE LA POUPEE

Paris, Arnauld de Vresse, 55 rue de Rivoli, circa 1845.. EDITION UNKNOWN circa 1845, text in French, oblong 8vo, approximately 160 x 245 mm, 6¼ x 10 inches, 16 wonderful enchanting hand coloured lithographic plates including the title page all by Baric, printed by Imprimerie Roche, all featuring a doll or dolls and one or more sweet little girls. 16 pages of charming text. The doll in question is more like a small child, it can be lazy and has very naughty impulses. On finally learning to be good the doll is itself rewarded with an untrained doll. Original publisher's red textured boards and matching plain pebbled cloth spine, ornate gilt floral border to upper cover with gilt title within, endpapers replaced at some time. Corners slightly worn with cardboard showing at tips, edges slightly rubbed, upper cover slightly faded, gilt slightly tarnished but still bright, a few tiny scrapes to lower cover, neat inscription dated 1869 on preserved orginal front endpaper, a little faint foxing to title page and some margins, 10 mm (½") closed tear to lower margin edge of plates at page 2, at page 11 and at page 12, another smaller to margin fore-edge of plate at page 4, none near image and all neatly repaired on blank side. A very good clean bright copy of a delightful doll book. Dated from another title listed in Gumuchian (466-467) with 16 hand coloured lithographs by Baric printed by Roche and published by Arnauld de Vresse. However another similar title in Die Bilderwelt (2559) is dated 1861. 1 hand coloured copy in Bibliotheque Nationale, none on WorldCat. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.

Opera rara.

REPORT OF THE EXPLORING EXPEDITION TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS IN THE YEAR 1842, AND TO OREGON AND NORTH CALIFORNIA IN THE YEARS 1843-44.

Washington. 1845. - 693pp. plus twenty-two plates and five maps (three folding, one in a separate folder). Original blindstamped cloth, spine gilt. Corners lightly worn, cloth starting to separate at rear hinge. A few scattered spots of foxing, but generally quite clean internally. Very good. The Senate issue of the Fremont report, certainly one of the most important single pieces of Western Americana. In various editions this report was more widely read than any other account of the West before the gold rush, and the text and map had a profound effect on the routes frequented during the great period of emigration. The maps include the huge folding "Map of.Oregon & North California in the Years 1843-44," with many lakes and rivers traced in color. Fremont also made substantive contributions as a naturalist, mainly through the work of John Torrey, who accompanied the expedition. WHEAT TRANSMISSISSIPPI 497. RITTENHOUSE 229. Each volume has minor wear to the spine head and tail, some rubbing and slight chipping to the spine, slight scuff to the covers. Each volume with fresh and clean pages, excepting the minor scattered spotting on the color plates and their surrounding pages in "Christmas Carol," very slight spotting to the title vignette pages in "Chimes," and the hint of smudging to the front fly leaves in "Battle of Life." Overall, a very attractive and near fine set, housed together in a red slipcase with only minor wear to the corners. Smith II 5, 8, 9. The Christmas Books is the name given to Charles Dickens' mid-nineteenth century series formatted after and including his 1843 masterpiece, A Christmas Carol. Each novel in the series is marked by a strong moral and social message, the transformation of a hardened character to a more caring individual, and, of course, the holiday season. While each novel is unique and has its own attributes, none of the works achieved the critical success and timelessness of A Christmas Carol. Unusual for Dickens, each of the Christmas Books were published first as novels without prior serial publication. Additionally, each of the novels is illustrated in black and white, with the exception of A Christmas Carol, which contains plates with color illustrations. This set of the Christmas Books contains the original publisher's cloth bindings bound into the back of the texts.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Doyle, Richard; Landseer, Edwin; Leech, John; Maclise, Daniel; Tenniel, John; Stanfield, Clarkson; Stone, Frank.

Anne Hathaway. Or Shakespeare in Love

London; Richard Bentley. 1845, 1845. First edition. 8vo. 3 volumes. Attractively bound in contemporary half green morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles and decoration to spines, an expertly executed binding unfortunately unsigned. Minor edgewear to extremities, all three volumes in spectacularly good condition. Top edges gilt Internally clean and bright, marbled endpapers, bookplate to front pastedowns ("Otium sine literis mors est": Leisure without literature is death!) occasional light marginal soiling. Two instances of shallow marginal loss to volume two, in no way intruding upon the text. A very melodramatic, romantic and Victorian novel purporting to relate Shakespeare's domestic life with his wife (the one that only warranted a second best bed and no sonnets), it is occasionally described as "execrable" which seems a bit harsh, at the very least it is vividly descriptive albeit without any particular historical accuracy.

Proclamation of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints. To all the Kings of the World, to the President of the United States of America; To the Governors of the Several States and to the Rulers and People of All Nations

Liverpool: Published by Wilford Woodruff, 1845. First UK printing. 16pp. Octavo [21 cm]. Wrappers. Previously bound in with other works with stab holes near spine. First leaf detached, but present. Short closed tear to front panel. & & The 1845 Proclamation of the Twelve Apostles was a controversial document addressed to the kings of the world, the President of the United States, and other authority figures, and clearly states that the authority of God’s kingdom rests with the Latter-day Saints.& & According to Crawley: "The proclamation declares that the kingdom of God is established on the earth, that its authority rests with the Latter-day Saints, and that all must repent of their sins and be baptized into the kingdom. To the kings and rulers of the earth it says, 'You are not only required to repent and obey the gospel...but you are also hereby commanded, in the name of Jesus Christ, to put your silver and your gold, your ships and steam-vessels, your railroad trains and your horses, chariots, camels, mules, and litters, into active use, for the fulfillment of these purposes.' The American Indians, it asserts, are a remnant of the tribes of Israel and must be educated and civilized, for they are to assist in building the New Jerusalem in America while the Jews rebuild the old Jerusalem. It concludes with a series of one-sentence statements summarizing the fundamentals of Mormonism." Flake/Draper 1512. Crawley 285. British Imprints 25

        An original design for porcelain

[Paris: 1845 or later]. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. 13 1/4 x 20 1/2 inches. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."
