        An original design for porcelain

[Paris 1845 - Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some mild creasing and a small orange mark in the top right part of the image. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience." ( Grove Dictionary of Art ).

Plate 290 - California Partridge (California Quail)

New York and Philadelphia 1845 - John James Audubon Selection from Birds of America, From Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories, octavo ed. New York and Philadelphia: J. J. Audubon and J. B. Chevalier, 1839-44. Hand-colored lithographs 10” x 6 1/2”; 15.25” x 18.75” framed A tireless entrepreneur, John James Audubon devoted himself to an unprecedented project, becoming the first to attempt the seemingly insurmountable task of documenting all the bird life of North America. This task grew out of a genuine and passionate interest in his subjects, and Audubon determined not only to complete a project that no one else had undertaken, but to approach it in an entirely innovative manner. His style and his persona were much like the notion of America itself: ambitious, animated, larger than life. The artist's tireless efforts and remarkable talent culminated in the publication in London of his 435-plate Birds of America (1827-1838), undoubtedly the greatest work on birds ever produced. The celebration of this quintessentially American work, and the enterprising, talented artist who created it, has grown steadily since the time of its publication. Even before the double elephant folio edition had been completed, Audubon was planning this, the octavo edition, in order to make his magnificent Birds of America available to a wider spectrum of people. In the introduction to the first part of his reduced format edition, Audubon wrote that he had “been frequently asked, for several years past, by numerous friends of science, both in America and Europe, to present to them and to the public a work on the Ornithology of our country, similar to my large work, but of such dimensions, and at such price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his Library.” All of the birds from Audubon’s original folio aquatints were reduced by camera lucida for lithography by the artist’s son John Woodhouse, and new species were added. The octavo edition was expanded to 500 plates, and included the text of Audubon’s “Ornithological Biography.” It was beautifully printed and colored by John Bowen of Philadelphia, one of the finest American lithographers of his day, and issued in 100 serial parts over a five-year span. Audubon’s “little work,” as he called it, was a great success, attracting nearly 1,200 subscribers and becoming the format through which Audubon’s ornithology was most widely disseminated in the nineteenth century.

        THE EPISCOPAL CHAPEL, SANDGATE.

Published by the Misses Purday, Sandgate. Lithographed by J. Newman, 48, Watling Street, London. No date but c.1845 - Hand-coloured lithograph mounted in conservation materials suitable for framing, overall size 17.5 x 15 inches approx. Printed surface within inner margin, 14 x 11 inches. It depicts the chapel viewed from the northwest with sheep grazing in the foreground and a horse-drawn carriage ascending Military Road on the right, with the High Street and sea visible beyond; in the background is Martello Tower no. 4 at the end of the Leas. Good condition apart from an inch and a half, old closed tear in the lower margin and some slight loss of surface near, and slightly affecting, a few letters in the title. Rare lithographic view of the Episcopal Chapel at Sandgate, built in the Palladian style, with cupola on top. The Earl of Darnley built the 'Episcopal Chapel' on a plot of land from his adjoining estate and it was consecrated on 8 May 1822. Sandgate was developing rapidly at that time and a larger church was required. The earlier building was demolished in 1848 and a new, more commodious church, St. Paul's, was completed the following year. Thomas Purday was established as a bookseller and owner of the circulating library at Sandgate as early as 1816. He published a Sandgate, Folkestone and Hythe Guide in the 1840s and passed his business on to his daughters, Sarah and Mary Ann, who reissued the guide wth their own imprint about 1846. It is possible that the view of the Chapel was issued as a consequence of its impending demolition and replacement. KENT VIEWS KENT
