In the course of two and a half months in 1838, traveling some 800 miles south from Cairo, Roberts recorded the monumental temple sites along the Nile in more than a hundred sketches. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, set on "Plains so vast...that, until you come near them, you have no idea of their magnificence," Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin, writing in PRAETERITA, Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter, not to exhibit his own skill, but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest.

Zeichnung in schwarzer Kreide.

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. By Edward Gibbon, Esq. with notes by the Rev. H. H. Milman

New York: Kelmscott Society Publishers. c. 1845., 1845. Five volumes sumptuously rebound in the West End style. Octavo. pp. 662; 690; 720; 729; 649. Originally published in six volumes, volume one of this historiographical giant was first published in 1776, and has been read by historians of Rome and Byzantium ever since.         Sketches on the Shores of the Caspian, Descriptive and Pictorial

8vo. London: Richard Bentley, 1845. 8vo, original heavily embossed brown cloth, backstrip gilt-lettered. xiii, 412 pp. Four tinted lithographic plates and four woodcuts in text, all after drawings by the author. Small printed bookplate of Wm. Richardson Hunt of Memphis, Tennessee. fresh and very good on the exterior; occasional foxing within, affecting a couple of plates, a few leaves carelessly opened. First Edition of the author's first and apparently only book. The youthful author spent six months touring Persia as part of an excursion headed by his cousin, the English consul at Erzeroom. His account of his observations and experiences is wonderfully detailed, but there's no doubt that he was a dreadful prig: his concluding opinion upon departing from Persia was that it is is "a very pleasant and interesting country for a six months' tour, but by no means sufficiently agreeable for me to adopt it for a prolonged residence." A very uncommon work, and unknown to Abbey, who lists only three titles related to Persia. The provenance of this copy is of particular interest. Colonel William Richardson Hunt was one of several noteworthy proprietors of the superb mansion known as the Hunt-Phelan Home, perhaps the grandest and certainly one of the oldest and most historic houses in Memphis.

Narrative of a Mission to Bokhara, in the Years 1843-1845

New York: Harper & Brothers, , 1845. To ascertain the Fate of Colonel Stoddart and Captain Conolly. Octavo. Original sage green diagonal combed cloth embossed, title gilt to the spine, elaborate foliate panelling to the boards. Tissue-guarded frontispiece and 8 other similar plates. A little rubbed, corners bumped, light browning, library bookplate of Maryville College, St. Louis, to the front pastedown, small ink-stamp to the tail of the title page, and neatly inked gift inscription verso of the front free endpaper. First US edition, first published in the UK in the same year. Joseph Wolff, "that most curious of missionaries" (Blackmer), was the son of a rabbi from Bavaria, he converted firstly to Catholicism, and subsequently to Anglicanism. In 1821 he began "his extraordinary nomadic career as a missionary to the Jews of the Near East and central Asia. Between 1821 and 1826 he travelled as a missionary in Egypt, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Syria, Mesopotamia, Persia, and the Crimea." (ODNB) In 1827 he undertook another expedition that took him through "Corfu, Alexandria, Beirut, Cyprus, Cairo, Jerusalem, Anatolia, Constantinople, Armenia, Persia, and Khorasan, where in November 1831 brigands robbed and enslaved him…he then traversed Bukhara and Balkh, and reached Kabul, emerging from central Asia in a state of nudity after having been plundered and compelled to march 600 miles without clothing." He crossed India from Ludhiana to Bombay and returned to England via Egypt and Malta. Trips to Abyssinia and America followed, and in 1843 he was commissioned to return to Bokhara to seek out information concerning Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Stoddart and Captain Arthur Conolly, two players of The Great Game held there as spies. Unbeknownst to Wolff or his sponsors both officers had been executed in 1842 soon after their capture, which fact Wolff "eventually discovered after an amazing series of adventures in which he barely escaped with his life. He was accompanied by Abdul Wahab, a painter and watchmaker who produced the illustrations for the book" (Blackmer),

Du dandysme et de G Brummell EDITION ORIGINALE Tirage de tête ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Caen: B. Mancel, 1845. Fine. B. Mancel, Caen 1845, 11,5x15cm, relié. - Original, a very rare copies Holland only major paper with a few copies on colored paper edition. Bound in black half shagreen, spine tooled raised four black nets, flat black cardboard, corners lightly bumped, binding of the time. Autograph signed Trébutien Georges Lesnard. Some small foxing on the guards. Exceptional copy printed on large Dutch paper in strict contemporary binding. In the Annals of Normandy, Jean-Luc Pire analyzing the importance of collaboration between Barbey and Trébutien devotes a paragraph to the dandyism that focuses on the important participation of Trébutien this little book, among the rarest and most sought after Barbey: monumental correspondence Barbey spoke "dominicalement" with his friend for twenty-six are known. (...) The presence of Trébutien is almost constant in the universe aurevillien. The "Sagittarius" did not sign liar when he announced to his correspondent: "Your name, intertwined in mine - is also known that my name [...]. Who said Aurevilly's Trébutien said. "At the heart of dandyism, Barbey tribute to his publisher and friend:" I ask the thirty or forty people who read me permission to present their Mr. Trébutien as a friend who is better than me, whose imagination and science - often separated but united in it - do not require friendship to be appreciated what they are worth, "The history of dandyism, more than any other work of Barbey is related to his publisher, friend and collaborator active. First envisioned as a single item on Brummel died three years earlier, the dandyism will become a book thanks to numerous documents provided by Trébutien which served as librarian at Barbey "about Brummell, I followed literally all your advice. I've read everything you've told me. " After two refusals published in the Revue des Deux Mondes and the Journal of Debates, D'Aurevilly's gives green light to Trébutien for printing. Barbey will take to heart this edition: the exchange of hardships and corrections is incessant; in October, he decided to add notes to the book. Collaboration Trébutien acquires special significance: "You gave me the réaimer Brummell. Without you, I would have thrown into the fire as a reward disappointments which he was the cause [...]. You made me resume taste, and here now pushed by you, caused by you, I come to worship detail, stipple, hatch to worry, all these corrections are finished and I don ' have no power, I, who am a man first jet, a sudden and rapid artist animalized by passions! ". When 1850 Trébutien to propose to publish the prophets of the past, Barbey acquiesce in these terms: "We will correct the proofs as those of Brummell, is not it, my friend? I like this way of working. It is fertilizing. A thought, a memo, any change occurs to me, and I send you. " If the first edition strengthens the friendship of the poet and his publisher, Jl Piré notes that the reissue will instead issue of contention: Barbey had proposed to his friend, July 2, 1858, to reprint the Brummell in chicken- Malassis (...) "if you allow me to deal with the Lemon Chicken. We share as brothers, it will give Brummell and reprints. " Or Trébutien abhore Chicken-Malassis "socialist of the worst kind [...], he was editor of one of the vilest of the time [...] newspapers. He founded a bookshop in Paris where he reissued all impurities and ungodliness of the 18th century. " (Jean-Luc Pire In: Special issue of the Annals of Normandy GS Trébutien [Preface by J.-Cl. Polet] 1985 pp. 3-198....) G.S. Trebutien [Préface par J.-Cl. Polet ] 1985. pp. 3-198.)

Cassel, Theodor Fischer, 1845-1851. Three parts in three (complete). 4to (28 x 21.5 or 22 cm) [12], [8], [8] pp, 144 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates with ca. 900 accompanying text sheets. Uniform contemporary red half calf over red grained boards. Spines with four raised bands; compartments with gilt titles and number.l The German (later Chilean) conchologist Rudolf Philippi (1808-1904) initiated and edited this series, but he was not the only author. Contributions are by various specialists such as Dunker, Koch, Pfeiffer, a.o. Philippi made several other contributions to conchology, this being the largest and most important one. Genera treated include, for instance, Haliotis, Trochus, Littorina, Venus, Natica, Helix, Bulimus, Achatina, Nerita, Strombus, etc., etc. The fine plates have been printed by the famous "lithographische Anstalt von Th. Fischer in Cassel" and most probably all drawn by Philippi himself. The important index of shells in each volume is present. The plate numbering is erratic. The page numbering even more so. All pages numbered by pencil and some text a bit foxed, or more uniformly tanned as usual. A few plates have some marginal foxing and of some 18 plates the paper is slightly darker. Spotting and tanning are frequent in copies of this series, in this set however, it is quite limited. In all a very good and attractively bound set. Caprotti, p. 210; Nissen ZBI, 3154.

Narrative of Some Passages in the History of Van Diemen's Land, During the last three years of Sir John Franklin's Administration of its Government

Richard and John E. Taylor, circa, London 1845 - Octavo, very good in recent cloth with original wrappers bound in; ownership signature of William Kay and presentation notation (see description), bookplate of Rodney Davidson. Presentation copy to Franklin's nephew. First, unpublished edition of a "very rare" book (Ferguson).Printed in highly limited numbers for private distribution among Franklin's immediate circle, this was his justification in answer to the charges made against him in the dispute with the Colonial Office over his disastrous but well-intentioned administration of Van Diemen's Land. Perhaps surprisingly given the contentiousness of the dispute, the book is an even-toned autobiographical narrative of events from a decisive period of the history of Van Diemen's Land, when the future of the colony itself hung in the balance. This is by far the rarest of the two books published by Franklin, the other being Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea (London, 1823), and was written by Franklin after his return to England in 1844. Shortly after, he left on his fatal expedition to the Arctic, and it has been said that Franklin's clash with Whitehall weighed on him when he accepted the command. The work was not published until after he had sailed, and so all presentation copies are inscribed by an amanuensis "By order of Sir John Franklin".This particular copy was presented to the architect and surveyor William Porden Kay (1809-c.1870), the nephew of Sir John Franklin through his first wife Eleanor Porden. At Franklin's invitation, Kay took a position as architect in Van Diemen's Land, arriving at Hobart in 1842. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The American Electro Magnetic Telegraph : with the Reports of Congress, and a Description of All Telegraphs Known, employing electricity or galvanism. Illustrated by Eight-one Wood Engravings

Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1845. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. First Edition. viii, [9]-208 pages. 8vo. Early 1/4 leather over marbled boards. Binding is very worn overall. Initials on second flyleaf. Upper right corner torn from the title page affecting the 'e' of "The" and the 'N' of "AMERICAN". Ex-libris The Caldwell Collection at the Library of Knox College, with the bookplate of Edward and Lucy Morse Caldwell on the front pastedown endpaper. Front and rear hinges starting. Inked and penciled notations underneath the specimen of the new Telegraphic Language on pages 28 and 29, otherwise clean internally. Boards. Perhaps the most important book documenting the earliest history of telegraphy. Published in 1845 by Vail after the successful test of a congressionally approved experimental telegraph line from Baltimore to Washington DC in response to repeated requests for information. "Apparently the first American book devoted to the electric telegraph", it contains 81 wood engravings, over 60 pages documenting the device itself and it's applications (including oddly Chess Playing), many reports to Congress on the subject, and a history of telegraphs employing electricity in various ways for the transmission of intelligence. As such, it is the earliest, and most complete survey of the work done to that date, the cradle period of telegraphic expansion into the "real world" from the laboratory. There also exists a 24 page work cited in Norman and Hooke's Origins of Cyberspace (#208), again by Vail in 1845, which includes pages [9]-31 of the present work, apparently from the same set of type, albeit with different page numbering and a separate title page. That pamphlet covers the telegraph device used in the Baltimore Washington trial, but lacks the historical perspective as well as the survey of other devices that had been used up until that date. While Norman and Hooke note that the 24 page pamphlet was "probably" issued first, we found no evidence in our investigation to support the precedence of either work. Both contain the identical early printing of Morse code. Shiers & Sterling (6-003) ; Not in Origins of Cyberspace ; Wheeler 1137 ; Ronalds Collection (which only included the 1847 edition).
