        Traite des maladies des articulations accompagne d'un atlas de 16 planches

      Paris: Bailliere, 1845. Bonnet, Amedee (1809-58). Traite des maladies des articulations. . . . 2 text vols., 8vo., plus 4to atlas. l, 582; [4] 647 [1]pp. Half-title, title and 16 lithographed plates in atlas. Paris & Lyon: J. B. Bailliere [etc.], 1845. 210 x 133 mm. (text); 346 x 270 mm. (atlas). Quarter morocco, marbled boards ca. 1845, a bit worn & rubbed; atlas in modern quarter cloth, marbled boards to match. Minor foxing & soiling, but very good. First Edition. Bonnet, chief surgeon at the Hotel Dieu in Lyon, proved experimentally that the characteristic postures assumed by tubercular joints were caused by the accumulation of fluid in the joint."By injecting fluids under pressure into the capsules of the joints [of fresh cadavers], he observed that the limbs assumed the positions that permitted the greatest amount of fluid to be injected. He also noted the points of rupture, or the weak spots, in the capsule. He correlated all his findings with clinical observations on his patients" (Peltier, p. 149). Bonnet also used fresh cadavers to demonstrate the mechanics of meniscal injuries, comparing the varying effects of forced extension, forced flexion, varus and valgus stress, and rotation of the knee in cadavers of all ages. "Like Malgaigne in Paris and Hilton in London and many others, Bonnet was an apostle of rest for joint disease, fixing the joints proximal and distal to the diseased joint. . . . [He] wrote on every aspect of joint disease, thus orienting the Lyons school towards orthopaedics and its apogee under Ollier" (Le Vay, p. 260; see also p. 259). Peltier, Orthopedics, pp. 149-50; 255-56. Waller 1286 (calling probably erroneously for 17 plates in the atlas). Heirs of Hippocrates 1717.

Zeitgenössische Pappbände mit Buntpapierüberzug, rotem Rückenschild und rotem Buchschnitt.. I. Geschichte des Executiv-Prozesses; II.

        Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition During the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842

      Philadelphia.: Lea and Blanchard.. 1845.. FIVE VOLUMES as issued, 10 folding maps plus one single page map, in-text illustrations throughout, lvi+434, xi+476, xi+438+ads, xiii+539, xii+558pp, appendix, index, 9 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches (tall octavo), gilt decorative embossed cloth-covered boards (hardbound).The volumes are bound in ribbed brown cloth; embossed decorative pattern and title in gilt on spine with image of anchor at base; American emblem, featuring eagle, in gilt on each cover (all still bright). The heads of the spines are worn with a little loss of the cloth, foot of one spine has a little loss; bumping and light wear to corners of most volumes. Condition of maps: "Chart of the Viti Group or FeeJee Islands" (volume 3) has one extra vertical fold; "Groups in the Western Parts of the Pacific Ocean" (frontispiece of volume 5) has been misfolded (resulting in several fine creases) and has a thin vertical band of darkening where the sheet was originally exposed at the fore-edge. Otherwise the maps are in very good condition. The interiors are clean and tight; overall a good to very good set with faults as noted. This is a complete set of the first "popular" edition of this important American voyage of discovery, #3 in Haskell's bibliography "The United States Exploring Expedition, 1838 -1842 and its publications 1844 -1874," printed from the stereotype plates of the Imperial octavo edition. Haskell quotes a "Notice of the publishers" to elucidate the principal differences between this edition and its immediate predecessor: it "contains precisely the same type, page and reading matter, as the one in Imperial Octavo; - the difference between them being in the quality and size of the paper; the substitution of forty-seven wood-cuts for that number of steel vignettes in the other; the omission of the sixty-four plates, and the use of ten of the fourteen maps, three of which are on a reduced scale." Three thousand copies of this edition were printed. The Exploring Expedition, in addition to protecting American interests in the Pacific (whaling, trade, etc.) was responsible for expanding scientific knowledge relating to flora, fauna and native peoples and for advancing the cartography of the Pacific and Northwest Coast of America, accomplishments reflected in the volumes. The ten folding maps are as follows: Volume I — Map of the World (very good condition); Paumotu Group (very good condition). Volume II — Settled Part of New South Wales (very good condition). Volume III — Chart of the Viti Group of Feejee Islands (improperly folded but clean; no discoloration). Volume IV — Map of the Hawaiian Group (very good condition); Map of the Oregon Territory (edges browned and chipped; improperly folded but only moderately so; clean with no discoloration, generally very good). This volume also includes a single page Map of Part of the Island of Hawaii. Volume V — Groups in the Western part of the Pacific Ocean (misfolded creating pleats with browning on this fold); Map Illustrative of the Currents and Whaling Grounds (very good condition save for short crease the result of improper folding); Map of the Sooloo Sea (very good condition); Map of Upper California (very good condition). The five volumes are illustrated with hundreds of "woodcuts" (wood engravings) that include musical notation and several rough-copy maps. Volume V includes an informative Appendix and a General Index. There is an excellent discussion of this significant Expedition and the various publications that were the fruit of the Expedition on the Smithonsian Institution website. .

        Die operative Chirurgie.

      Brockhaus, Leipzig 1845 - Dieffenbach, Johann Friedrich (1792-1847). Die operative Chirurgie. . . . 8vo. xxvi, 856, [4]; xxiv, 864pp. Leipzig: Brockhaus, 1845-48. 225 x 135 mm. Cloth-backed boards, c. 1848, rebacked, retaining original spines. Stamp of Adalbert Jahn on titles, stamp of Deut. Gesells. f. Chirurgie on endpapers & 1 or 2 other leaves, light browning but very good."The surgical testament" (Gabka & Vaubel 139) of Dieffenbach, Die operative Chirurgie is excessively rare and not in most standard medical collections. Dieffenbach contributed to cardiology (cardiac catheterization, Garrison-Morton 2748.1), gastroenterology (resection using Lembert's suture, G-M 3441), orthopedics (tenotomy for club-foot, G-M 4323), and ophthalmology (myotomy for strabismus, G-M 5856), but his most extensive contributions were to the field of plastic surgery, from his M. D. thesis in 1822 (G-M 5741) to his Chirurgische Erfahrungen of 1829-34 (G-M 5743) to his final contribution of over 300pp. in Die operative Chirurgie. Dieffenbach was also the first to use anesthesia in plastic surgery (G-M 5659)."Monumental in its variety, inventiveness and breadth of scope" (Gnudi & Webster 321), Dieffenbach's work in plastic surgery has had lasting value in the field. Die operative Chirurgie, which was completed by Dieffenbach's nephew after his sudden death in 1847, discusses all the techniques and operations which he had developed and introduces new ones, for example one for making a lining for a new nose. "Dieffenbach's work in plastic surgery was not limited to the rhinoplastic operation . . . but foreshadowed in its multiplicity the modern practice of general plastic surgery, including otoplasty, cheiloplasty, meloplasty, blepharoplasty, urethroplasty, cystoplasty, operations for hare-lip, ectropion of the lip, ectropion of the eyelid, colobomata, and many others" (ibid. 322). Wallace 15-16. McDowell 442-52. Zeis/Patterson pp. 94-104 and entries 530 (general), 761, 1074, 1205, 1324, 1663, 2056, 2075, 2086, 2100, 2119, 2233, 2294, 2041, 2460, 2477, 2494, 2535, & 2559.         Raccolta di Viaggi dalla Scoperta del nuovo Continente fino a'di nostri

      Prato: Fratelli Giachetti, 1840-, 1845. Octavo, 18 volumes (bound in 17), with 159 plates and maps (five handcoloured), occasional modest foxing, a few plates browned, yet a fine set in later nineteenth-century red half morocco with ornate gilt spines. From Christopher Columbus to Sir Thomas Mitchell. A handsome set of voyage accounts uniformly bound in rich gilt morocco, including an Italian translation of Sir Thomas Mitchell's Three Expeditions Into the Interior of Eastern Australia, originally published in London 1838, and here titled Viaggi nell'interno dell'Australia o Nuova Olanda. Mitchell's narrative is a curious inclusion in this collection, and includes a frontispiece and twelve plates directly derived from the 1838 London edition.The scope of this collected edition is impressive, encompassing the period from Columbus' discovery of the New World to the mid-nineteenth century. An eclectic range of authors is included, both famous and obscure, including Cortes, Burckhardt and Bernardin de Saint-Pierre.Of additional interest is an abridged version of the Pacific travels of the French diplomat and traveller Lafond de Lurcy (1802-76). Lafond de Lurcy entered the French merchant navy in 1818 and spent several years trading in American waters before joining the service of Peru to command a voyage to the Pacific in 1822, during which time he visited Tahiti and the Marquesas group. In 1828 he traversed the Pacific from the Phillipines to Lima, stopping at Hawaii en route. A third Pacific voyage followed shortly afterwards in 1830, during which time Lafond de Lurcy visited Australia, as well as New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa amongst other islands. An abridged version of his experiences in the Pacific comprises one volume of this set and is titled Viaggio nella Polinesia e nelle isole circonvicine dell'Australia and contains five plates including a portrait of Queen Pomare, a Tahitian burial and romantic idyll, a landscape in the Marquesas and a costume study of women on Guam. Furthermore, this volume is adorned with woodcut vignettes after Jacques Arago. This collection of voyages also includes two other separately bound volumes by Lafond de Lurcy treating the Philippines and the Americas.

        CATALOGUE DE LIVRES FRANÇAIS, ANGLAIS, ALLEMANDS, ESPAGNOLS, GRECS ET LATINS, ITALIENS, PORTUGAIS, ORIENTAUX, ETC. ... SUIVI DE PRIX COURANTS

      Paris: Hector Bossange, Maison de Commission, 1845. contemporary half morocco, top edge gilt. thick 8vo. contemporary half morocco, top edge gilt. (xvi), 984 pages. A massive catalogue of 984 pages, the vast bulk of which (pp.1-802) is devoted to books as noted in the title. Some of this is very interesting, especially the section on the arts and architecture, which includes some rare and expensive books. The second part is of even more interest as it contains sections on maps, globes and spheres, astronomical instruments, and "machines typographiques" (with lithographic illustrations of the Stanhope Press, the Columbian Press, the Presse Française and the Machine à Glacier). This is followed by eight leaves of type specimens and "Les Articles pour la Reliure" which includes four folding plates of shiny glazed black paper printed in gold showing 'Fers a Doreur.' The two final plates are more fers a doreur and include two fully blocked spines, a fully blocked cover and other stamps, rolls and lines. These are in perfect condition and have great appeal as well as obvious documentary value for historians of 1840s binding. The letterpress lists also include skins for binding with prices. The final leaf of this section is Daguerreotypes, both full apparatus and plates. Contemporary bookplates of the Franklin Library of Boston and the later 19th century bookplate of the Lawrence Public Library. Rubbed, hinges rubbed but sound.

        An introduction to perspective

      1845. HAYTER, Charles. An introduction to perspective practical geometry, drawing and painting; a new and perfect explanation of the mixture of colours; with practical directions for miniature, crayon, and oil painting...with...colour plates. xiv, [ii], 276 pp. Illustrated with engraved author's portrait, 150 engraved text illustrations and 5 chromolithographic plates. 8vo., 222 x 135 mm, bound in publisher's original brown cloth and embossed gilt cartouche on front cover, newly rebacked. London: Samuel Bagster & Sons, 1845. Originally published 1813. The present edition is given a long notice by Professor Herbert: "This 1845 publication has very handsome color lithographs involving the collaboration of Owen Jones, among others. Secondary colors are in some cases derived from overprinting of the three primary ones, and "ancient" color is shown to lead towards black, whereas "modern" color insists on white. Hayter's text (and one color plate) shows the advantage of spinning color disks, in which the three primaries will form white, and he looks forward to later developments also by stressing that "certain colours" of objects, that is, local color, must give way to what the artist actually sees. He must "resign all previous acquaintance with the colours of objects, especially distant ones, and confine himself purely to optical conviction," a pragmatic emphasis upon visual versus remembered qualities which, together with the aspiration toward light, looks forward to the Impressionists" (Yale Library Gazette, July 1974, p. 14). Hayter was an early exponent of the three-colour theory of the physicist Thomas Young (1773-1829). In 1802 Young had proposed that all colours could be mixed from the three primary colours - red, blue and yellow (Young was the initiator of the wave theory of light). Owen Jones, author of the incomparable Grammar of Ornament, 1856, was to become a leading Victorian authority on colour. His beautiful plates - the first of their kind to be printed in colour - represent a breakthrough in the dissemination of colour theory. PROVENANCE: With the bookplate of Raymond and Annie Lister (Lister was a major authority on Samuel Palmer.) Birren Collection 306. Vagnetti FIb15 (but not citing this edition).

Hartford: E.B. and E.C. Kellogg, 1845. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of this celebrated collection of silhouettes of distinguished Americans. All the portraits, except for that of George Washington, were based on sketches made from life by the portrait artist William Brown. Each portrait is accompanied by a plate displaying a facsimile of the subject's handwriting, typically reproducing it from a piece of correspondence. Among the subjects portrayed are John Marshall, John Q. Adams, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, John C. Calhoun, De Witt Clinton, Martin Van Buren, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John Randolph. William Brown (1808-1883), renowned silhouette artist, often cut his silhouette portraits from memory. One of his most famous group portraits was the 25-foot long silhouette of members of the St. Louis fire department. A fine copy of this rare book. "Almost the entire edition was destroyed by fire, and copies are extremely rare" (Harry Peters, America on Stone. NY: Doubleday, etc., 1931). Howes B871 ("b"); cf. Peters, America on Stone, pp., 116-117; Sabin 8578.

        Travels in Luristan and Arabistan { Volumes I & II }

      London: J. Madden and Co, 1845. TWO VOLUME SET: "Luristan, or the land of the Lurs, embraces the greater portion of the mountainous country of Persia - The low country, lying to the south of this Chain of mountains - is denominated Khuzistan or Arabistan. These regions, which in general now offer to the eye the melancholy spectacle of decay, of devastation, and even spread out at intervals into utter wilderness, were not so in former ages. There was a time when they must have teemed with an industrious population, as the vestiges of ruined towns plainly denote - It is with a view of rescuing from a second oblivion this once classical ground, that the author has endeavoured to draw aside a corner of the veil which still covers this mysterious region" (preface, pp. iv-vii). (2). 2 volumes, 8vo, (222 x 140mm.). 15 wood-engraved or tinted-lithographed plates, 2 folding, and 2 folding maps. p. xx, 404; p.xii, 398 [ ii ] 16pp adv. A very nice copy indeed, professionally recased using early half leather and boards, gilt titles to spine, 5 compartments. Pages are excellent and plates etc very good indeed. There are about 6 neat blind stamps to margin heads, fitted with new pastedowns and end papers. There are some neat pencil notes within a small amount of the text, which personally I believe, in this example adds to the volumes as the notes are believed to be those of Colonel (temporary Brigadier-General) Edmund Boteler Burton, Indian Army - 17th Bengal Cavalry. 1861-1942. These are easily removed however. Plates with tissue guards. Very nice set.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good +. 8vo.

        Can Abolitionists Vote or Take Office under the United States Constitution? The Anti-Slavery Examiner. No. 13

      New York: American Anti-Slavery Society, 1845. First edition. Stitched self wrappers. Wrappers soiled and worn at edges, otherwise very good. 8vo. Advocating "no union with slaveholders," Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), on the executive committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and one of the most radical abolitionists of the time, argues that no abolitionist can conscientiously vote or hold office since the Constitution acknowledges the validity of slavery. "Slaveholders monopolize the offices and dictating the policy of the government -prostituting the strength and influence of the Nation to the support of slavery here and elsewhere- trampling on the right of the free states, making the courts of the country their tools." This was the Garrisonian position which argued it was pointless to attempt to banish slavery by electoral means; instead, the free states should secede. Any compromise with evil is fatal. One of the most important documents by the Radical Abolitionists. Sabin 81919. Dumond p.10. LCP. Afro-Americana, 2nd ed. Suppl. 1712. Amer. Imprints 455202.
