n.p., n.d. - Large gelatin print photograph, approx. 13¼" x 16¾" on a larger mount (18" x 20½" corners of which are slightly defective); all else very good. Printed from the original collodion wet-plate negative, likely in the 1890s. Shamelessly pieced together from Wikipedia: William H. Illingworth (1844-93) was an English photographer who accompanied both Captain James L. Fisk's 1866 expedition to the Montana Territory and Lt. Colonel George Custer's 1874 U.S. military expedition into the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory. In 1850, his family relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota, where his father operated a jewelry business. Illingworth helped in the business until he was about 20 years old, when he moved to Chicago to study wet plate photography. Illingworth produced some 1,600 negatives of the West and Midwest during his career. Many of these photos still exist in collections due to Illingworth's son who found the negatives in a St. Paul attic, and later sold his father's collection to a man named [Edward A.] Bromley. Bromley, in turn, sold the Black Hills images for $60 to the South Dakota State Historical Society in 1919.

Fine original portrait drawing in crayons of "the Swedish Nightingale" by the 19th century German artist Theodor Hellwig

      - 295 x 217 mm. On brown paper. Signed "Th. Hellwig"and dated 1844 by the artist at lower right. Lind is depicted half-length, facing right, with her head turned left towards the artist. She wears a gossamer wrap around her shoulders pinned with a brooch in front and a pendant with a cross hangs around her neck. Lind wears her hair in what would become her signature style. The singer would have been 24 years old at the time of this portrait.Paper very slightly cockled at edges; faint small rectangular impressions of early tape to background area, not affecting image; contemporary brown paper mounting tape to edges of verso. Lind went to Germany in October of 1844, at Meyerbeer's invitation, to perform the leading role in his opera Ein Feldlager in Schlesien by Ludwig Rellstab to a libretto by Eugene Scribe on December 7, 1844. The occasion was a gala opening ceremony to commemorate the rebuilding of the Berlin Opera House by Frederick William IV. The part was actually performed by Leopoldine Tuczec on that evening, and Lind went on to make her triumphant début in Berlin in Norma just a week later, on December 15th of that year. "The critics broke into panegyrics, and declared her interpretation of Norma a revelation." Bulman: Jenny Lind, pp. 77-84. "Its success exceeded the warmest expectations of all concerned. The public was in raptures - the critics were disarmed." Rockstro: Memoir of Madame Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt, Vol. I, p. 212. Hellwig, born in 1815 in Halberstadt, studied and worked in Berlin. It is thus entirely possibly that this drawing was done from life in Berlin sometime between October and December of 1844. Lind had apparently adopted a new hair style shortly after her arrival in Berlin, depicted in the present portrait: "Jenny looked a trifle older now, for she had just exchanged her ringlets for the style in which she wore her hair for the rest of her life, parting it in the middle and drawing it down in loops over her ears." Bulman p. 80. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Un Autre Monde

1844. first edition. Grandville?s ?Visions and Nocturnal Transformations? [GRANDVILLE, J.J., illustrator]. [DELORD, Taxile]. Un Autre Monde. Transformations, visions, incarnations, ascensions, locomotions, explorations, pérégrinations, excursions, stations, cosmogonies, fantasmagories, réveries, folatreries, facéties, lubies, métamorphoses, zoomorphoses, lithomorphoses, métempsycoses, apothéoses et autres choses. Paris: H. Fournier, 1844. First edition. Quarto (10 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches; 257 x 191 mm.). [2], 295, [1] pp. Wood-engraved frontispiece and text illustrations (four head-pieces, thirteen tail-pieces, 116 vignettes, and fifteen full-page vignettes) and thirty-six hand-colored wood-engraved plates. Title-page printed in red. Bound without the half-title.Mid twentieth-century half dark green calf over green cloth boards ruled in blind. Spine with five shallow raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, red morocco label lettered in gilt, top edge stained green. Some scattered foxing, mainly to text, the thirty-six hand colored plates bright and fresh. A very good copy.Originally issued in thirty-six parts between February and November 1843. ?In this remarkable book, of the boldest possible originality, Grandville dared to reveal his dream world to the public. He wrote to his publisher: ?What will be the title of these compositions? Transformation? Distortion? Reordering of dreams? Nightmare??Or indeed harmonic metamorphosis during sleep? But?here is the true title?I believe?Visions and nocturnal transformations.? (Quoted by Garcin, p. 26.) His visions take many forms. There are experiments in perspective. In one sequence an optical illusion gives the reader a bird?s-eye view, thus enabling Grandville to show at once a daughter?s love encounter and her father?s unawareness of it (p. 26). In another, humanity is seen as if reflected by distorting mirrors. In ?Psychological Disguises? the upper half of each figure is what appears to the observer, the lower suggests what he or she is in reality: polished gentleman and ruffian, pious woman and lorette. The ?Vegetable Revolution? parodies the French penchant for violence. ?An April Visit? presents the bank of a stream with fish holding out lines to catch men. A trip to the zoo offers monsters as grotesque as any conceived by Bruegel or Bosch; witness the pit of ?doublivores? (p. 112). Still more striking are certain of Granville?s full-page plates, ?peregrinations of a comet? (opposite p. 95), for example, or ?the battle of the cards? (opposite p. 247), which was surely in Tenniel?s remembrance when he made his designs for Alice in Wonderland. Grandville once explained how these visions formed in his mind: ?In my opinion one never dreams of an object of which one has not had sight or the thought when one was awake. And it is the combination of these various objects seen in the mind?s eye often at considerable distances that form the ensembles, so strange and eccentric, of the dream? (quoted by Garcin, p. 28)?       Wien, Rom u.a., 1844-1876. Zus. 25 S., 8°. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Beckx, Mislin, Jesuiten, Jesuitengeneral, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

Fr. 34. [Piano-vocal score]

Milano: Giovanni Ricordi [PNs 16221-16241], 1844. First complete edition, first issue. Scarce. Hopkinson 41A(a). Chusid p. 63. Catalogo Ricordi online.Ernani, to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Victor Hugo's play Hernani, was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on March 9, 1844. The opera "quickly became immensely popular, and was revived countless times during its early years.""As Verdi himself stated more than once, Ernani represents an important change of direction in his early career. His two earlier successes, Nabucco and I Lombardi, had both been written for La Scala, one of the largest stages in Italy and well suited to the grandiose choral effects of those works. For the more intimate atmosphere of La Fenice, he created an opera that instead concentrated on personal conflict, carefully controlling the complex sequence of actions necessary to bring characters into intense confrontation. This new format brought about a fresh consideration of the fixed forms of Italian opera, in particular an expansion and enrichment of the solo aria and duet, together with a more flexible approach to the musical sequences that bind together lyrical pieces. Most important, however, was Verdi';s gathering sense of a musical drama';s larger rhetoric, his increasing control over the dynamics of entire acts rather than merely of entire numbers. In this respect, the third act of Ernani sets an imposing standard of coherence, one that is rarely equalled until the operas of the early 1850s." Roger Parker in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Catalogo Ricordi online.Ernani, to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Victor Hugo's play Hernani, was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on March 9, 1844. The opera "quickly became immensely popular, and was revived countless times during its early years."As Verdi himself stated more than once, Ernani represents an important change of direction in his early career. In this respect, the third act of Ernani sets an imposing standard of coherence, one that is rarely equalled until the operas of the early 1850s." Roger Parker in Grove Music Online.         Royal Clemency! Respited Execution & Communtation of Sentence of...

1844. Transported to Australia [Broadside]. [Murder]. [Great Britain]. Royal Clemency! Respited Execution & Commutation of Sentence. Lowther the Condemned Murderer. York: J. Hodgson, Printer, April 27, 1844. 14-1/2" x 6-1/2" broadside, woodcut arms of Great Britain at head of text. Light browning and some foxing, light wear, minor nicks and creases to edges, three horizontal fold lines. * This broadside describes an act of Royal clemency granted to a repentant criminal, "from the numerous and respectfully signed Petitions and Memorials." George Lowher and Matthew Pearson were poaching on the Marquis of Normanby's Estate at Mulgrave. They were approached by the Head Game Keeper, John Moffit, who Lowther accidently shot. Pearson was acquitted; Lowther was condemned to death. Due to his behavior and the accidental nature of his crime, his sentence was commuted to Transportation to Australia. He was transported on the Hyderabad with 29 other convicts on 15th October, 1844. The ship arrived in either Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) or Norfolk Island on 2nd September 1845. The broadside begins with a brief summary of Lowther's crime, trial and communication of his sentence. This section includes the text of Lowther's letter of repentance that Lowther sent to the judge. The second part is a 40-line poem about his self-condemnation. This is a rare item. No copies listed on OCLC or COPAC.

Journal of the Senate of the Fourteenth General Assembly of the State of Illinois, At Their Regular Session, Begun and Held At Springfield, December 2, 1844 (Containing the Message of the Governor..in Relation to the Disturbances in Hancock County)

Springfield, IL: Walters & Weber. Very Good. 1844. First Edition. Hardcover. This exceedingly rare Senate Journal contains the original report of Governor Thomas Ford on the events surrounding the murder of Joseph Smith at the Carthage, Illinois jail. Tan cloth boards with red and gilt title label, light soil and rubbed and bumped edges and corners. Hinges reinforced with cloth tape, soil on edges, and light foxing of pages. Joseph Smith surrendered on June 25, 1844 for the charges of destroying the press of an anti-Mormon publication put out by ex-communicated Mormons. Pages 91-110 in this volume are the report of Govern Ford on his visits to Carthage and Nauvoo in the month preceding and on the day of the murders by the mob which killed Smith and his brother Hyrum at the jail on June 27, 1844. Ford recounts the speech he gave that day at Nauvoo. He explains his actions and gives opinions on what had led to such tensions surrounding the Mormon colony of Nauvoo, along with providing his recommendations on the still standing Nauvoo militia. Ford was critcized by both sides for not doing more in the events before and after Smith's death but defended his actions citing the state's limited power in the situation. The report is dated December 23, 1844. The governor's message is rare even in its more common pamphlet edition, and no copies of this Senate Journal are found in auction records or on OCLC.
