        ALS ("Béranger"). Paris, 3. XI. 1844.

      1844. 8vo (205 x 130 mm). 3 pp. on a single bifolium. Address panel to verso. To the wife of a Parisian police official, making enquiries about the female perpetrator of an acid attack on an unfaithful lover. A very intriguing letter in which the poet, chansonnier and champion of social justice asks for information from the wife of one Brissot-Thivars, employed by Préfecture de Police, on behalf of the family of a young girl imprisoned at St. Lazare for having thrown vitriol in the face of an unfaithful lover. Béranger seems sympathetic, and had obviously been approached by the girl's family as a result of his reputation as a friend to the unfortunate, especially they young. He writes that the girl, the daughter of a General who had been cruelly treated by the Restoration, and who was previously of good character finds herself imprisoned with common prostitutes. Béranger seems to be taking advantage of his friend Madame Brissot-Thivars' connections, and requests discretion, asking that his name is not mentioned in connection with the affair and that M. Brissot-Thivars knows nothing of his enquiry. He writes that if she cannot help she may simply burn the letter. This "crime passionnel" of vitriol-throwing reached epidemic proportions in Paris later in the century and caused major social concern. - Four original folds, slight staining, but clean overall. Provenance: Liepmannssohn, Berlin.

        A Great Country's Little Wars; or, England, Affghanistan, and, Sinde;

      ondon- John W. Parker, 1844 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A scarce first edition of Lushington's work on the First Anglo-Afghan War. Incribed by the author. First Edition. Collated: Complete with two maps (1 folding) and four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Henry Lushington was an English colonial administrator and chief secretary to the government of Malta. He wrote several works, particularly musing ongovernment and military action. The First Anglo-AfghanWar was fought between the British East India Company and Afghanistan between 1839 to 1842. Many political and public voices criticised the war as rash, and it is famous now for the loss of 4,500 British and Indian soldiers to Afghan tribal fighters. Lushington's work is the reprinting in book form of two articles published in the immediate aftermath of the war. It is at once both an account and critique of the war, with which Lushington hoped to prevent repetition of similar mistakes and decisions in the future. With a presentation inscription by the author to 'Archdeacon Venables, May 1844'. Inscribed to Richard Venables (1775-1859) Archdeacon of Camarthen. Condition: In original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing. Fading to spine and extremities, with wear to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, although strained in places. Pages bright and generally clean withlight scattered spotting in places. Folding map clean bright and intact. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Illustrations of the Recent Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland

      1844 - BROWN, Captain Thomas. Illustrations of the Recent Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland, with the Description and Localities of All the Species, Marine, Land, and Fresh Water. London: Smith, Elder, 1844. Large quarto, modern three-quarter blue morocco gilt, marbled boards. $2200.Second edition, "greatly enlarged," of this classic catalogue of mollusca, with 62 full-page plates of shells (nine hand-colored), drawn by Thomas Brown and engraved by William Home Lizars.Having produced paintings for the first European edition of Wilson's American Ornithology (1831, later published as separate prints in 1834) and having edited Oliver Goldsmith's History of the Earth and Animated Nature (1832), artist Thomas Brown cemented his career as a naturalist in 1838 by accepting the position of curator of the Manchester Museum. He was later elected fellow of the Linnean Society and president of the Royal Physical Society. First published in 1827 (with only 53 plates), this enlarged edition of Brown's splendid catalogue of mollusks of the British Isles contains 62 engraved plates executed by William Home Lizars, whose works, including those for Audubon's Birds of America and many editions of Sir Walter Scott, "rank among the finest of the early 19th century" (Greg Peters). Lizars had begun in his father's print shop by producing bookplates and notes for local banks, as well as views for publications catering to the Scottish tourist trade. "He constantly experimented with new techniques and, in 1821, perfected a method of etching away the background of a copper plate to produce a relief surface similar to that in a wood engraving" (Edinburgh University Library). Plates generally very clean with only an occasional spot of foxing. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Autograph letter signed. Windsor Castle (London), 8. IX. 1844.

      1844. 3¼ pp. on bifolium. 8vo. To "Prätor" (his secretary and librarian Eduard Prätorius, 1807-55), complaining about the handling of the budget for his art and natural history collections in Coburg: among other things, he fails to comprehend why he is to spend 1500 pounds for new copperplate engravings; Professor Hassenstein's salary he finds too generous, while those of the director, Carl Heinrich von Schauroth, and of the secretary Fischer ought to be raised. "Ich habe Ihnen auf mehrere Briefe Dank zu sagen. Der letzte handelt von Geschäften, darum will ich ihn speciell beantworten. Den Cabinetsetat habe ich durchgegangen und schicke ihn corregiert zurück. 5000 fl. des Jahres schien mir lächerlich hoch. Wozu soll ich neue Kupferstiche zu 1500 des Jahres anschaffen und für 500 Curiositäten! Das Anschaffen muß der Generosität der beiden Besitzer und Gelegenheiten überlassen bleiben. Der Wunsch war nur, die Sammlung gut aufgestellt und erhalten zu sehen. Was die 875 für Hassenstein betrifft, so lege ich einen Brief von Ernst im Original bei, der die Versprechung enthält, daß er mir nichts kosten soll. Er hat ohne dieß eine Pension von 500 rth. von mir. Dagegen will ich den jungen Schauroth, der meine Idee war, auch Ernst nicht zur Last legen und würde ihm einen Zuschuß von 300 fl des Jahres aussetzen für seine Mühe um das Cabinet und Fischer detto v. 100 fl. als Secretär. - So würde mich das Cabinet 1000 des Jahres kosten, which is quite the outside. - Nehmen Sie sich der Sache an und berichten Sie wieder [...]". - On black-bordered stationery.

        A Christmas Carol.

      Chapman & Hall,, London 1844 - In prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas. With illustrations in black and white and frontispeice in colour by John Leech. Fourth Edition. 8vo. [168 x 110 x 16 mm]. viii, 166, [2] pp. Bound in contemporary red cloth, blocked and lettered in gilt to the spine and font cover and blocked in blank to the covers, with yellow glazed endleaves and gilt edges. (Heavy fading to the spine and covers with the corners and head and tail of spine knocked with some loss, slight staining to the covers). With pencil marking on the front free endpaper and book owner's inscriptions further into the book reading 'Eliza Ritchards' and 'Alfred J. Waterman 1886'. this book is a Fourth Edition. There is some contention over true first editions of this book, however there was a trial period in which both geen and yellow endpapers were used, Dicken favoured the green, so true first editions are described as having green endleaves. These green endpapers were chalky and expensive so the publishers had to revert back to the yellow endpapers so the retail price of 5 shillings could be justifiable.

Autograph letter signed ("C. Laplace"). Fort-Royal (Martinique), December 1844.

      1844. Large 8vo. 2¼ pp. on double leaf. Written from Fort-Royal, where he commanded a division between 1844 and 1847. Laplace informs his correspondent that he has kept the addressee's nephew aboard his frigate and thinks of returning him to Basse-Terre (Guadeloupe). He further writes that he had planned to return to Guadeloupe sooner, but circumstances had prevented him from traveling. - Laplace was commander of La Favorite with which he circumnavigated the globe between 1830 and 1832, promoting France's overseas trade. In 1837-1840 he made a second voyage during which he visited Hawaii with the 52-gun frigate L'Artémise to end the persecution of Catholics (as the French saw it), an intervention known as the Laplace Affair. - Slightly spotty.

        THE WANDERING JEW

      1844. [In Three Volumes.] London: Chapman and Hall, 1844/-45/-45. 16 pp Vol III ads dated Aug 1845. Original blind-stamped green-grey cloth. First English Edition in book form, secondary issue. Chapman and Hall issued THE WANDERING JEW in weekly numbers and also in bimonthly parts during 1844-45, concurrent with its appearance in the original French in Paris; the three volumes were issued separately, as the tale was completed serially.~Marie-Joseph Eugène Sue did for France what Charles Dickens did for England: establish the concept of the serial novel, with each part ending with a cliff-hanging predicament. His two most famous works are THE MYSTERIES OF PARIS (90 parts, 1842-1843), followed by this one, LE JUIF ERRANT -- a tale of a family hunted all over the world, and curiously beginning with the protagonist and his sister crying out to each other across the Bering Strait.~The primary issue of THE WANDERING JEW was bound in red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, and included plates by various artists, engraved by Heath. Then (to quote from Sadleir), "Late in 1845 (but with title pages unaltered) the three-volume book edition was re-issued, without the plates, and bound in dark green fineribbed cloth." This is such a copy.~It is in near-fine condition (quite clean and bright, though with one front cover faintly spotted and edge-dented, another with a few tiny pinholes, and all three endpapers with a 1951 signature). This is rather remarkable condition for 1845 volumes still in original cloth; most copies that turn up today are rebound. Sadleir 3159 (note).

        The Book of Hardy Flowers; or, Gardeners' Edition of the Botanic Garden

      London : R Groombridge A very good complete copy of the Gardeners' Edition of the Botanic Garden, 8 volumes bound in 4, with 96 tissue-guarded hand coloured plates (12 per volume). This variant of the Botanic Garden is extremely scarce. It is presumed to have been first published in 1844 and to have been produced as a cut down, and therefore cheaper, version of the Botanic Garden, for practical gardeners to use. This set is bound in contemporary half leather bindings with gilt-lined raised bands, blind stamped decoration and title and volume labels to the spines. The boards are marbled. The bindings are sound if scuffed, particularly to the corner leather and to the marbled boards. Spines with general wear. The original endpapers are present, and there is a faint signature to the fep on 3 volumes (on an initial blank in the 4th). Each of the 4 volumes is in 2 parts, with separate title pages and indexes, with 12 hand coloured plates (each illustrating 4 plants) and text descriptions. The plate paper varies across the volumes from white to toned. The colouring on the plates also varies: on some it is rudimentary; on others detailed and precise. The contents are in very good condition overall: there is occasional light marking - generally in the top margin; and there is a small split in the front endpaper joint at the base in Vol III. Size: 20.5 x 17 cm.

        The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit

      London: Chapman and Hall, , 1844. With Illustrations by Phiz. Octavo (133 × 213 mm). Bound by Marshall in contemporary green half calf, marbled sides, red morocco label to spine letterd gilt, blind lattice pattern to spine, marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page and 39 plates by "Phiz" (H. K. Browne). Spine slightly faded, some light wear to extremities, some foxing and oxidization to plates, overall an excellent copy, attractively bound. First edition, bound from the parts with stab-holes visible, and with the textual flaws noted by Smith. This copy has the £100 title plate, not transposed. The transposed plate is often referred to as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver contend this, stating that "It is merely one of the five cases in Chuzzlewit of triplicated steels, one of them reading '100£' and the other two '£100' ... all three of them in use during the issue in parts.
