Gedenk-Buch. Including: [DEVRIENT, Otto]. Festspiel der Erholungsgesellschaft.[Weimar or Friedrichshafen], 10 September 1873. Folio (33.5 x 21 cm). Written in brown ink in a neat and very legible German gothic hand, with the titles and the occasional word in the headings written in a Latin hand. Contemporary reddish-brown gold-blocked, textured cloth.

      - Detailed handwritten account of the festivities and splendid ceremonies organized by the Court of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach on the occasion of the marriage of the heir to the Duchy, Carl August (1844-1894) and Pauline of Sachsen-Weimar (1852-1904), celebrated on 26 August 1873 in Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg.The Erbgroßherzog Carl August was the son of the ruling Großherzog Carl Alexander of Sachsen-Weimar (1818-1901) and his wife Sophie (1824-1897), the famous Princess of Orange-Nassau, daughter of King Willem II of the Netherlands (1792-1849) and Anna Pawlowna (1795-1865). Großherzog Carl Alexander and especially his wife Sophie were very interested in the arts and cultural life. They lived in Weimar in the winter and spent summers at Schloss Ettersberg. Already in the last quarter of the 18th century Schloss Ettersberg had been the centre of a literary and musical circle that included celebrities such as Goethe, Wielan and Herder. The Schloss was also used as a theatre where the Weimar "Erholungs-Gesellschaft" performed their plays, including on 10 September 1873 the "Festspiel" that forms an appendix to the present manuscript.Although the book is clearly in its original binding as presented, the binder shaved the fore-edge margin fairly close to the text, occasionally touching a letter. In very good condition, with only occasional very minor foxing. The binding with a few small stains, a groove impressed in the back board, and much of the "gold" of the 4 cornerpieces now with a copper colour, but still generally very good.

Sefer Hibat Yerushalayim [Love of Jerusalem].

Moshe and Yehudit Jerusalem 1844 - Small 4to (15.5 x 21 cm). [2 incl. title with woodcut vignette, text to verso], 60 leaves, text in Hebrew; title page a bit stained and rubbed. Recent marbled half calf boards, gilt title to spine. A fine copy. First edition of the first book about Jerusalem printed in the Holy City, illustrated with the Western Wall on the title page. This is also the first travelogue of the Holy Land published in Jerusalem. A fine copy of this scarce work. Published under the regime of the Sultan Abdul Maagid, the 'Love of Jerusalem' was "written specifically for the edification of the Jews in the Diaspora", so that they might begin to know what the Holy Land was like and how it was situated in relation to the Bible. It is as such the first attempt by the residents of Jerusalem to convey to Diaspora Jewry the significance of the city and its holy places, and to link the global Jewish community spiritually and physically to the Land of Israel. A proper travel guide, it includes complete descriptions of Israel and Jerusalem, the holy cities, villages and important gravesites. The physical geography of each region is detailed in a manner that includes natural elements such as hills and caves, and their place in history. The commentary is presented from a spiritual, religious viewpoint that emphasizes the sacred significance of each location. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A NEW SPIRIT OF THE AGE

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1844. FIRST EDITION y. Poet Richard Hengist Horne (1802-84) patterned this collection of critical essays about contemporary writers after the acclaimed collection of essays "Spirit of the Age; or Contemporary Portraits," published by his idol William Hazlitt in 1825. Among the writers included in the work were Dickens, the Brownings (Mrs. Browning is given credit for contributing at least one of the chapters), Mrs. Shelley, Wordsworth, Mrs. Trollope, Tennyson, and Hunt (there are 25 essays in all in the work, some of them dealing with more than one figure). Few were pleased by what they read; according to DNB, the book "elicited a deluge of abuse from its victims, and Horne, naïvely surprised, decamped hastily on a tour of Germany." Dickens, however, was either more forgiving or more flattered, and subsequently employed Horne as a reporter for the "Daily News," for which he covered the Irish famine in 1846, and later as a sub-editor of "Household Words." In any case, the work provides a useful survey of the period's literary scene, and our copy is in uncommonly handsome bindings.. 200 x 124 mm. (7 7/8 x 4 7/8"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY CADET BLUE THREE-QUARTER MOROCCO over pale blue watered silk, raised bands, spines handsomely gilt in compartments with floral sprig centerpiece and volute cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. With 10 engraved portraits. Top inch of silk on one board faded by sun, one plate with closed one-inch fore-edge tear (not affecting image), other minor internal imperfections, but A VERY PRETTY SET, especially fresh and clean inside and out, and with bindings that are remarkably bright.         Der Handel des Russischen Reichs.

Mitau and Leipzig, G. A. Reyher, 1844. 8vo. Contemporary dark green calf, ornamented in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, inner dentelles ornamented in gilt, pink watered endpapers, all edges gilt; pp. [iv], 330, [2, errata], tables in the text; light wear to extremities, a little spotted in places; provenance: duplicate from a Latvian library (1920s stamp), crossed out earlier German stamp of the Society for Antiquities of the Baltic Provinces of Russia. Scarce first edition of this picture of Russian economy, trade and manufacturing at the time, written by an English lecturer in Dorpat (Tartu, Estonia), who later wrote a book on the impact of the revolutions of 1848/9 on the Austro-Hungarian economy and administration. In the preface he obliquely hints that he wanted to include more statistical tables and material but was stopped by 'important voices' (i.e. the Russian authorities). Divided into six chapters the book opens with a geographical and statistic survey of the Empire, the national wealth, primary production, and industry. This is followed by the trade, the situation of the merchant class and their restrictions, ports, im- and export. The fifth chapter is on customs and tariffs, and the final one deals with trade companies, steam navigation, transport companies and trade agreements. Goldsmiths'-Kress 33720.

A collection of 90 letters with some astronomical calculations, mostly relating to astronomical observations  from Hamburg, with some from Lisbon (whither he went in March 1857 for health reasons), but with one document  relating to the sale of lands at Picton in Australia (dated September 1844), between Karl RÜmker and the English gentleman and amateur astronomer John Lee of Hartwell, Buckinghamshire, mostly addressed to him in London at Doctors' Commons. Some of the letters are clearly copies There is one letter from RÜmker's wife written after his death (21 December 1862, detailing the circumstances of his demise in Lisbon.   The letters (13) from George RÜmker, illegitimate son of CKL RÜmker date from between 1848 and 1854 and are written from the Observatories at Durham and Oxford.   The letters are all endorsed in a small neat hand (Lee's) with details of sender and date etc.   The letters whilst of technical interest also have much else to interest, such complaints about the exorbitant charges of the bookseller Asher in Berlin for sending books, accounts of the breaking of RÜmker's telescope in Lisbon, and so on.         Colonie agricole et pénitentiaire de Mettray.

      - [Paris], Imprimerie Lemercier, [1844]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

47 eigenh. Briefe, tlw. m. Paraphe bzw. Unterschrift.

Karlsbad (überwiegend), London u.a. bzw. ohne Ort, 1844-67 bzw. o. J. - „Lady William Russell (1793–1874) was the wife of Lord George William Russell and a notorious socialite. Elizabeth Anne was the only child of Captain the Hon. John Theophilus Rawdon (died 1808), the brother of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings. She married Russell on 21 June 1817. A beautiful and energetic cosmopolitan who had enjoyed a broad European education, Lord Byron praised her in „Beppo" as one whose bloom could, after dancing, dare the dawn. However, her outspoken Tory sympathies won her few friends among her husband's Liberal circle. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux described her as that accursed woman. She and Russell had three sons, all of whom she tutored at home, perhaps lending them a rather distinctive approach to life [.]. Benjamin Disraeli said in conversation, I think she is the most fortunate woman in England, for she has the three nicest sons" (Wikipedia). - „[.] (L. J. Fränkel: Alfred Meißner, in: ADB LII, 773ff.). - Vereinzelt m. Knickspuren bzw. kl. Ein- oder Ausrissen. - Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 500 [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Fioriture normali.

1791 erst wieder so klar darüber gehandelt. Lesky

Beiträge zur Botanik. Erster Band (all published).

Leipzig, Verlag von Wilh. Engelmann, 1844, 8, VIII, 242 pp., 9 lith. plates, ccontemp. card board Schleiden's personal copy. First Edition - Schleiden's copy, with his ownership stamp on the title and his bookplate! Fine copy of Schleiden's collected papers reprints 14 previously published papers, including his "Beiträge zur Phytogenesis". Acting upon his belief that plants represented aggregates of individual cells, Schleiden published a study of the vegetable cell, beginning with the nucleus (discovered by Robert Brown in 1832), and proceeding to a discussion of its role in the formation of cells. Schleiden's "watch-glass" theory of cell formation was wrong-he believed that they crystallized in a formative liquid containing sugar, gum and mucous-but it focused attention on the problem of cell reproduction and provided a testable hypothesis. More significant was Schleiden's insistence that plants consisted entirely of cells and cell products. Garrison-Morton 112. PMM 307a (both Beiträge zur Phytogenesis (1st.Ed. 1838))
