THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS: A CHRISTMAS CAROL; THE CHIMES; THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH; THE BATTLE OF LIFE; [and] THE HAUNTED MAN

London: Chapman and Hall (first three); Bradbury & Evans (last two), 1844; 1845; 1846; 1848; 1848. Early Editions (see below; "Haunted Man" in FIRST EDITION, "Battle of Life" in FIRST EDITION, Fourth Issue, as typical). The five Christmas books--if possible in fine bindings like those seen here--would give special pleasure to every Dickens devotee, and, in fact, for every reader who appreciates English literature or who wants to understand Victorian taste. "A Christmas Carol," the immortal story of how ghostly visitations finally inject the miserly Scrooge with the Christmas spirit, is called by Eckels "the greatest Christmas book from the pen of any man . . . . Artistically it was a pronounced success, and from a literary aspect, it has delighted millions of readers." The work is not only finely written, but its sentiments had great appeal for Victorian taste. As a result of the warm reception of "A Christmas Carol," Dickens launched a series of four further Christmas books. "The Chimes" and "The Cricket" were also well received, and Dickens' audience never lost its appetite for the beloved yuletide tales, in which good triumphs over evil in the spirit of the season. "A Christmas Carol" appears here in the seventh edition (published within a few months of the first); "The Chimes" in the sixth edition (published the same year as the first); "The Cricket" in the 17th edition (published the same year as the first); "The Battle" in the first edition, fourth issue (as are most copies), and "The Haunted Man" in the first edition.. 170 x 107 mm. (6 1/8 x 4 1/4"). Five separately published works in five volumes. Early Editions (see below; "Haunted Man" in FIRST EDITION, "Battle of Life" in FIRST EDITION, Fourth Issue, as typical). Uniformly and attractively bound by Root & Son in later red half calf and marbled boards, raised bands, compartments with gilt holly tools or gilt lettering, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. An aggregate total of 53 woodcut illustrations in the texts, four engraved vignette title pages (the one in "Haunted" tinted), and eight engraved plates (the four in "Carol" nicely hand-colored), the illustrations by John Tenniel, John Leech, D. Maclise, and others. Eckel 110-25; Smith II, 4-6, 8-9. Spines uniformly a shade darker than calf on covers, very small spots of discoloration to free endpapers from binder's glue, faint offsetting from some plates, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE SET, internally immaculate, and in unworn bindings. The five Christmas books--if possible in fine bindings like those seen here--would give special pleasure to every Dickens devotee, and, in fact, for every reader who appreciates English literature or who wants to understand Victorian taste.         A S.M. la Reine Christine.

Paris, s.d. (c.1844). - MANUSCRIT in-8. 9ff. non chiffrés. (1f. blanc). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Carta postale ed itineraria d'Italia Rispettosamente dedicata a S. M. I. R. A Ferdinando I

Ottima conservazione

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit

London: Chapman and Hall, , 1844. With Illustrations by Phiz. Octavo (210 x 132 mm). Contemporary green calf, red morocco label to spine, gilt compartments within raised bands to spine, gilt rules enclosing blindstamped panels to covers, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page and 39 plates by "Phiz" (H. K. Browne). Bookseller's tickets to front and rear pastedowns, presentation slip loosely inserted, dated October 1917. Light sunning to spine, vignette title page closely trimmed at foot partially affecting text, plates slightly oxidised but less so than usual, a very good copy. First edition, with the textual flaws noted by Smith. This copy has the £100 title plate, not transposed. The transposed plate is often suggested as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver long ago dismissed this, stating that "It is merely one of the five cases in Chuzzlewit of triplicated steels, one of them reading '100£' and the other two '£100'... all three of them in use during the issue in parts.

Autograph Letter Signed [to Henry Denny]

Down, Kent, June 1, [1844] - Two pages, one leaf. Old folds, two small punch holes at foot, purple pencil notation to top. Very good condition VERY EARLY DARWIN INVESTIGATION OF THE RACES OF MAN. In 1834 Darwin heard that head lice vary among the races of man while on the voyage of the Beagle. In his Beagle zoological diary he wrote, “Mr Martial, a surgeon of an English Whaler assures me that the Lice of the Sandwich Islanders if they strayed to the bodies of the English in 3 or 4 days died If these facts were verified their interest would be great.— Man springing from one stock according his varieties having different species of parasites.— It leads one into many reflections.” Intrigued by the implications of this observation, Darwin began collecting specimens for further research. In 1844 Darwin began corresponding with entomologist Henry Denny, the recipient of this letter, who was investigating exotic species of lice. In this remarkable letter Darwin writes: “You may remember a statement, which I communicated to you about the Sandwich Islands lice not living on Europeans. The other day, I met a passage in a foolish book: ‘White’s Regular Gradation of Men,’ which I thought you might like to know of. At p. 79 he states that he has heard that the lice on the Negroes born in N. America and who have never been in a hot country, are blacker and larger than the lice on Europeans and further that the European lice seem to refuse to live on the Negroes. It is singular if both this and my independent statement, are without any foundation.” Darwin generously shared his findings and lice specimens with Denny, sending him a leaf of Beagle manuscript notes. Years later, Denny again took up the question of lice and variation in mankind in correspondence with Darwin, returning the Beagle notes borrowed long ago. Darwin continued to show keen interest in the subject and referred to it in The Descent of Man (Vol. I, p. 219) when discussing the question of whether the races of man might represent different species. The “foolish” book Darwin names in this letter is Charles White’s Regular Gradation of Man (1799), which corroborated Darwin’s story about the lice and races of man. However, Darwin here rejects the book as “foolish” for its attempt to prove that human races were separate species with distinct origins. This fascinating unpublished letter, written in the wake of the Beagle voyage, represents the earliest evidence we have seen in the market concerning Darwin’s investigations into the races of man. Housed in blue cloth slipcase with blue morocco backstrip and title stamped in gilt. Vol. II page 160 misnumbered 60; 163 misnumbered 16; 275 has the words "THE END." Publisher's catalogue inserted at the front of the first volume is dated January 1, 1846, but "bears no relation to the priority of the printing." Barnes A5. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's (1806-1861) two-volume Poems gained her international fame and prompted her courtship with Robert Browning whom she later married, noting during their courtship that she would remain 'EBB' as she was when Poems was published. Her literary reputation would eventually surpass her poet husband, and inspire other famous female poets such as Emily Dickinson whom kept a framed portrait of EBB in her room, and Virginia Woolf who attempted to regenerate enthusiasm for EBB in the 1930s. Poems includes some of EBB's most beloved works, including the politically toned "Cry for the Children," and the favorite among sentimental readers, "Lady Geraldine's Courtship: A Romance of the Age." The strong female characters of Poems foreshadows the heroine of her later epic poem Aurora Leigh, and solidifies EBB's legacy as an influential early feminist voice in literature.

Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan.

London: published by F. Catherwood, 1844 - Folio. Original green quarter morocco, green moiré cloth sides, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, yellow endpapers. Custom green morocco backed folding case. Fore edge of front board a little darkened, inner hinges reinforced with green cloth, occasional dustsoiling at margins not affecting plate area, a very good copy, without foxing. Chromolithographed title by Owen Jones, full-page map, and 25 tinted lithograph plates after drawings by Catherwood, the plates with plain paper guards. Text block expertly resewn and recased. First edition, limited to 300 copies. Stephens met Catherwood in 1836 and the two had a mutual interest in the ancient ruins of the near east. They decided to travel to Central America after reading an account of the ruins of Copan. Their travels resulted in three titles written by Stephens and illustrated by Catherwood, but this is the only volume published as a folio. Although many of the views and subjects appeared in his work with John L. Stephens, the large-scale lithographs here reveal detail and beauty lost in the smaller format. Many of Catherwood's original drawings and paintings were destroyed when a building in which he was exhibiting his work caught fire. "In the whole range of literature on the Maya there has never appeared a more magnificent work than Views of Ancient Monuments" (V. W. von Hagen, Frederick Catherwood Archt. [New York: 1950]). Hill p. 47; Sabin 11520; Tooley 133; not in Abbey.

Gedenk-Buch. Including : [ DEVRIENT, Otto ]. Festspiel der Erholungsgesellschaft.[Weimar or Friedrichshafen], 10 September 1873. Folio (33.5 x 21 cm). Written in brown ink in a neat and very legible German gothic hand, with the titles and the occasional word in the headings written in a Latin hand. Contemporary reddish-brown gold-blocked, textured cloth.

Detailed handwritten account of the festivities and splendid ceremonies organized by the Court of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach on the occasion of the marriage of the heir to the Duchy, Carl August (1844-1894) and Pauline of Sachsen-Weimar (1852-1904), celebrated on 26 August 1873 in Friedrichshafen, Baden-Württemberg.The Erbgroßherzog Carl August was the son of the ruling Großherzog Carl Alexander of Sachsen-Weimar (1818-1901) and his wife Sophie (1824-1897), the famous Princess of Orange-Nassau, daughter of King Willem II of the Netherlands (1792-1849) and Anna Pawlowna (1795-1865). Großherzog Carl Alexander and especially his wife Sophie were very interested in the arts and cultural life. They lived in Weimar in the winter and spent summers at Schloss Ettersberg. Already in the last quarter of the 18th century Schloss Ettersberg had been the centre of a literary and musical circle that included celebrities such as Goethe, Wielan and Herder. The Schloss was also used as a theatre where the Weimar "Erholungs-Gesellschaft" performed their plays, including on 10 September 1873 the "Festspiel" that forms an appendix to the present manuscript.Although the book is clearly in its original binding as presented, the binder shaved the fore-edge margin fairly close to the text, occasionally touching a letter. In very good condition, with only occasional very minor foxing. The binding with a few small stains, a groove impressed in the back board, and much of the "gold" of the 4 cornerpieces now with a copper colour, but still generally very good.

Fr. 34. [Piano-vocal score]

Milano: Giovanni Ricordi [PNs 16221-16241], 1844. First Complete Edition. First version of the opera. Hopkinson 41A(a). Chusid p. 63. Catalogo Ricordi online. Ernani, to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Victor Hugo's play Hernani, was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on March 9, 1844. The opera "quickly became immensely popular, and was revived countless times during its early years." "As Verdi himself stated more than once, Ernani represents an important change of direction in his early career. His two earlier successes, Nabucco and I Lombardi, had both been written for La Scala, one of the largest stages in Italy and well suited to the grandiose choral effects of those works. For the more intimate atmosphere of La Fenice, he created an opera that instead concentrated on personal conflict, carefully controlling the complex sequence of actions necessary to bring characters into intense confrontation. This new format brought about a fresh consideration of the fixed forms of Italian opera, in particular an expansion and enrichment of the solo aria and duet, together with a more flexible approach to the musical sequences that bind together lyrical pieces. Most important, however, was Verdi's gathering sense of a musical drama's larger rhetoric, his increasing control over the dynamics of entire acts rather than merely of entire numbers. In this respect, the third act of Ernani sets an imposing standard of coherence, one that is rarely equalled until the operas of the early 1850s." Roger Parker in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Full modern marbled paper boards, printed title label to spine. 1f. (recto title printed within decorative light green borders, verso blank), 1f. The cover has an elaborate Chinese design of two golden flags with Chinese characters, with the Emperor's face in the center top. Below that are three golden lanterns, followed by the English title: "THE CELESTIAL EMPIRE." Below this are two large birds facing the center where a large golden vase holds lilies. The back cover has the same pattern, but without the gilt stamping. Also contains 16p. of the publisher's book adverts. CONDITION: This is an exceptionally "fresh" copy. The head & tail of the spines are beautifully intact, there is no wear at these locations, which typically fail to hold together. The corners are in excellent condition, with barely any wear, the top right corner has a minor and tiny 'bump,' else a very clean and very solid copy of a RARE book. The spine has a similar embossed gilt title and design, all in all a very lovely, collector's condition copy. The contents are very clean, the original tissue-guard protection the title page from any transfer from the frontispiece is intact, but with the usual wrinkles. The book is complete as issued, with list of plates. THE AUTHOR: The title page lists the author as: "By the author of SOLDIERS AND SAILORS." WorldCat lists the authorship to "Old Humphrey," other editions as 1846 & 1860. Schultz.Johann Franz SIMON (1807-1843) "was born on the 25 August 1807 as the son of a barber-surgeon in Frankfurt on the Oder. After an apprenticeship as a pharmacist he studied in Berlin obtaining a degree in pharmacy in 1832. From 1835 he studied chemistry, also in Berlin. He received a PhD in 1838 with a dissertation on the chemistry and physiology of mother's milk. When SCHÖNLEIN became Professor of Medicine in Berlin in 1840 Simon received the position as an assistant in the hospital. In 1842 he qualified for inauguration as a Privat-Dozent (reader) in chemistry. He died, however, as soon as the 23rd October 1843 of tuberculosis of the brain before the chemical laboratory, which he wished to set up at the Charité, could be established. SIMON began first of all doing toxicological analyses. In his two volumes ''Handbuch der angewandten medizinischen Chemie" (Handbook of applied medical chemistry) he provided the first comprehensive presentation of clinical chemistry. His book was based on a wealth of observation and analyses. He tried, the first time ever attempted, to produce a systematic presentation of the diagnostically important pathological changes in the blood. The book also contained a detailed review of the methods. SIMON founded the first journal and the first scientific association of the new discipline." Johannes Büttner & Christ Habrich Roots of Clinical Chemistry (1987), p.86.
