An Address to the People on the Death of the Princess Charlotte. By the Hermit of Marlow

(London: Reprinted for Thomas Rodd, [1843]), 1843. First edition. NCBEL III, 314. Paper a little browned in the top margin; wrappers just splitting at the spine; very good copy, enclosed in a quarter morocco folding case.. 8vo, self-wrappers, stitched as issued, 16 pages. A political essay written by Shelley in 1817, just after he began using the pseudonym "The Hermit of Marlow," but not published until this edition in 1843. It draws parallels between the death of Princess Charlotte in childbirth, a tragedy over which there was an outpouring of public grief, and the public execution of three laborers who were hanged and beheaded for taking part in the so-called Derby Insurrection, an execution that Shelley maintained was evidence of the rulers of England trampling on human rights and the end of freedom in England. Above the title is the quotation "We pity the plumage, but forget the dying bird."

        Dupuy's Hymns and Spiritual Songs.

Morton and Griswold,, Louisville, KY: 1843 - A scarce early American West hymnal, a collection of the hymns of Elder Dupuy. The Reverend Starke Dupuy, a highly esteemed Baptist minister, established the 'Kentucky Missionary and Theologian", the first religious periodical published west of the Alleghany Mountains. Born November 1, 1779, he established the Choctaw and Chickasaw Mission in Mississippi, having been sent there in 1825 by the Baptist Board of Foreign Missions. This edition of Dupuy's Hymns was revised, corrected and enlarged in 1843 by the Rev. J. Peck of Rock Spring, Illinois. In the Preface, Peck says of Dupuy, "Elder Starke Dupuy, much respected by the Baptist denomination to which he belonged, and by Christians generally". For Baptist congregations in the American South, the hymns selected by Dupuy had a strongly emotional appeal: "As a rule the less educated congregations, especially in the South, carried forward the use of "Spiritual Songs". An especial favorite was Starke Dupuy's Hymns and Spiritual Songs ." emotional and often illiterate" ('The English Hymn: its Development and Use in Worship', Louis F. Benson. NY: Hodder & Stoughton, 1915. p203). The Appendix to this volume includes 71 hymns, "some of which are original, and many others are not to be found in the ordinary compilations that circulate through the Western Valley" (Preface, p4). 12mo, 444pp, 55pp appendix & index. Bound in a period hand stitched red leather slipcover, over the original brown leather boards. Leather slipcover a bit rubbed and worn; internally very good condition. OCLC: 13136930.         Diary of a March through Sinde and Afghanistan,

London: J. Hatchard and Son,, 1843. with the Troops under the Command of General Sir William Nott and Sermons delivered on Various Occasions during the Campaign of 1842. Octavo (198 × 112 mm). Original red cloth, gilt device of three Afghans to the front board, and in blind to the rear, neatly rebacked in morocco, title gilt to the spine, endpapers renewed. Folding single-tint lithographic frontispiece and 7 other similar lithographic plates. A little rubbed and bumped on the boards, pale browning, the plates lightly foxed, but overall a very good copy. First edition. Allen was assistant chaplain to the Bombay establishment, and accompanied Nott's forces through the campaign from April 1841 to February 1843. "Allen's diary offers a perceptive vision of the landscapes bringing to mind Biblical scenes of the Old Testament ? Youthful and exuberant at the campaign's advent, the diary reflects an older and more mature cleric by its end" (Riddick). An uncommon account, just six locations on Copac.

Fine large three-quarter length lithograph by Charles Baugniet (1814-1886) of the violinist in formal dress, leaning in Napoleonic stance on a decoratively carved sideboard on which rest an apparent musical manuscript in progress entitled "Adagio," an inkpot, and quill pen, with a violin on a carved chair to the subject's left

      - 430 x 315 mm. + wide margins. Signed by the artist ("C Baugniet") in the stone. Margins slightly soiled and foxed; edges slightly worn. A highly talented Belgian virtuoso, Artôt was a student of both Rodolphe and Auguste Kreutzer. "In 1843 Artôt [he] on a concert tour of America and Cuba with the soprano Cinti-Damoreau. He was one of the first violin virtuosos to visit America, the others being Vieuxtemps and Ole Bull; they vied with each other for the admiration of the American public, the French elements preferring Artôt';s Parisian elegance to the awkward but modest stage presence of Ole Bull. While in America Artôt showed the first symptoms of the lung disease from which he died. His compositions include a Concerto in A minor (1845), fantasies and airs with variations and, in manuscript, string quartets and a Quintet for strings and piano."         A Christmas Carol. In Prose.

London: Chapman & Hall,, 1843. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas. With illustrations by John Leech. Octavo. Original pinkish-brown vertical fine-ribbed cloth, spine and front cover decorated and lettered gilt, sides stamped in blind, green endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a crimson cloth box with the decorative title block gilt to spine and front board. Hand-coloured etched frontispiece with tissue-guard and 3 steel-engraved plates after Leech, wood-engravings within the text by W. J. Linton after Leech. Ownership to front pastedown in ink. Spine rolled, with a little wear to ends and tips, covers faded to edges, an occasional spot of faint foxing to contents. A superb copy. First edition, first impression, first issue, with "Stave I" on the first page of text and green endpapers, all the first edition textual points, and Todd's first state of the gilt wreath on the front cover (15 mm gap, unbroken D). The hand-coloured green endpapers, Dickens's original choice for his lavish gift book, proved a disappointment. The colour tended to dust off and smudge, so the endpapers were changed to yellow, not requiring hand work. Probably in the middle of binding, as demand grew faster than the current endpaper stock, it was decided to use up the green paper, and thereafter it was used indiscriminately with yellow, but discarded again when the initial supply of green became exhausted. Primary copies therefore occur with either green or yellow endpapers, some collectors preferring green as the author's original prepublication choice.

        Manuscript Mathematics Cipher Book

Lancaster, PA, 1843. Journal. Very Good. Folio. Over 130 pages of handwritten mathematics exercises with a multi-color calligraphic title page and similar headings on each page. Sound binding. Clean pages. Some cover wear and soiling. This cipherbook is somewhat unusual in that instead of focusing on basic commercial arithmetic like most copybooks, its sections include rather more abstract (though still practical) problems: Single Rule of 3, Double Rule of 3, Loss and Gain, Exchange, Decimal Fractions, Cube Root, Alligation, Position, Double Position, Arithmetical Progression, Geometrical Progression, Compound Interest, and conclude with a series of Promiscuous Questions. Census records show that Barr was eleven years old when he prepared this cipherbook. He lived in Lancaster for his entire life and became a prosperous owner of a large "Agricultural Implement and Seed Warehouse."

Account Ledger of the Washington Grays Light Artillery Corps of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, including entries for the Weaver's Riot (Jan. 1843) and the Nativist Riot (May 1844), 1843-1847

Hardcover. Very Good. quarto, 202 manuscript pages, bound in contemporary brown reverse calf, two black leather spine labels, stamped in gilt, which read: ""Ledger"" and ""L.A. Corps Washington Grays,"" minor wear, and scuffing, binding in very good condition, tight, and strong, entries written in ink, in a clear and legible hand, also includes index at front listing 130 different accounts for members of the corps between 1843-1847, as well as accounts for the expenses of the corps. Description of Ledger The ledger contains approximately 130 different accounts for men who served in the Washington Grays during 1843 to 1847. The dates of the entries are from 6 February 1843 to 11 December 1847 and cover all the various sorts of expenses that the men incurred, or that the corps incurred for supporting and paying the men. The ledger is set up in the double entry book-keeping system, debits on the left hand side and credits on the right. On the debit side of the ledger the expenses for the men include such things as uniforms, including installments on overcoats, expenses for fatigue jackets and caps, new uniforms, coat and pants, costs for contra straps, breast plate. There are also costs to the men for various infractions of the corps rules, appeals to those penalties, for taking care of arms, fines for not reporting, fines for not furnishing reports in the case of one officer, expenses for band participation, costs for copies of corps constitution, or entrance costs when men first joined the Grays, as well as other incidental debits. The credit side of the ledger includes the men's credits such as their pay for serving, or monies received from the county commissioners for pulling riot duty on such occasions as: the Weaver's Riots of January 1843 in Kensington, or the Nativist Riots in Kensington in May of 1844. The credits also include monies being paid in by the particular individual to bring his account up to date, usually paying in cash. Accounts exist not only for the regular soldiers, but also the officers such as Captain John McAdam, Lieut. Ben. K. Fox, Lieut. Jno. W. Rushton, and Lieut. J. C. Sumaker. There are also various corps special accounts for the band's expenses, and for expenses for uniforms such as cap and breast plates, fatigue cloth, uniform cloth, contra straps, fatigue jacket cloth. There is also an account for the firm of ""Wright & Burr"" who the corps appears to have purchased cloth and buttons from. One of the more interesting aspects about the ledger is the entries concerning the Weaver's Riots in Kensington in January 1843 and the Nativist Riots in Kensington in May of 1844. On 11 January 1843, rioters met at the ""Nanny Goat Market,"" a market house in the District of Kensington, then a self-governing district within Philadelphia County (now a neighborhood in the city of Philadelphia). This riot was the culmination of six months of textile worker strikes. The Sheriff's posse was assailed and beaten by the rioters and it was not until the militia arrived that the rioters were dispersed by General Cadwalader's brigade, of which the Washington Grays were a part. The following year, 1844, the Nativist Party, an anti-Irish Catholic political party, went to Kensington at the very spot of the previous year's Weaver's Riot for a political rally and were there met with stiff resistance from the Irish Catholics of the area. Three days of rioting ensued (May 6-8, 1844) and it was not broken up until the militia was called out, and once again, the Washington Grays were part of that militia group. Two Catholic churches, a rectory, a convent, the seminary/school, the Hibernia Fire Hose Company, the Nanny Goat Market (market house), and about sixty houses and stores owned by Catholics were destroyed and burnt to the ground. And a couple of dozen people were killed, and many others wounded. There are ten cases, in the volume, where men received pay from the Philadelphia County Commissioners for dut

Kabul.

Leipzig, Weigel 1843 - Erste deutsche Ausgabe. Engelmann 144; Embacher 60; Henze I, 415. - Burne's travel descriptions exceed usual interest for their concentration on what is seen rather than the process of the journey itself (Riddick). - Gesäubertes Exemplar, stellenweise leicht stockfleckig XII, 403 Seiten mit 6 Textskizzen, 12 (2 gefalt., 8 getönte) lithogr. Occasional scattered foxing with a small stain to the top blank corner of the last few leaves; the original owner has signed his name on the blank reverse of the title page with bleed-through, else very good. N.P. Lerebours is most noted for his publications EXCURSIONS DAGUERRIENNES (1841-1844), the first large-scaled publication illustrated from photographs, as well as for his manufacture of apparatuses, of which he was among the first. In his TREATISE, he discusses the underlying theory of the photographic process, and the numerous practical methodologies of the day. Even though it is largely concerned with the daguerreotype, there are sections on the paper processes of Talbot, Ponton and Bayard, and a description of the galvanographic process to make prints from daguerreotypes, with a compilation of writings by the inventors or practitioners themselves, the list of which reads as a European directory of the most famous of the period. Although stated as the fourth edition, it should be referred to as the fourth enlarged and revised edition; his earlier publications had various other titles and were less than half the length of this work. The appended catalog lists all manner of photographic apparatus and is priced. There are several pages concerned with his publication, EXCURSIONS DAGUERRIENNES, and the various contents that could be ordered. Roosens and Salu #2842.

Catalogue of the unrivalled collection of pipes; Turkey, Persian, Marakiebo and Kanaster tobacco; and Havannah cigars, and Manilla cheroots, of the rarest quality; the property of His late Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, K.G., and removed from Kensington Palace; which (by order of the executors) will be sold by auction, by Messrs. Christie and Manson ... on Monday, July the 10th, 1843, and two following days.

London, Christies 1843. 26 S.; jeweils 7 w. Bll. vor- und nachgebunden. Längsgenarbter brauner Maroquin, mit goldgepr. Deckeltitel, Rückenverg., breiten Deckelfileten, Steh- und Innenkantenverg. 27,5 x 19 cm. Punkt 4 z. B. besagt: \"The Lots to be taken away, with all faults and errors of description, at the Buyer\'s expense and risk, within Two days from the Sale; Messrs. Christie & Manson not considering themselves answerable for the correct description or authenticity of any Lot\". Gjentagelsen. Et Forsøg i den experimenterende Psychologi af Constantin Constantius. [Repetition. An Experiment in Experimental Psychology by Constantin Constantius] + Philosophiske Smuler eller En Smule Philosophie. Udgivet af Søren Kierkegaard. [Philosophical Fragments. Issued by Søren Kierkegaard] + Forord. [Prefaces. By Nicolaus Notabene].

Kjøbenhavn [Copenhagen], 1843, 1844. Small 8vo. Bound in three lovely later completely uniform patterned paper bindings with gilt leather title-labels to spines. Slightly brownspotted, but less than usual. An excellent set. 157pp. + 164 pp. + 110pp.. A truely lovely set of first editions of three of Kierkegaard's most important works, uniformly bound and in lovely condition. "Repetition" constitutes Kierkegaard's important work on the theory of repetition and the philosophical contents of the phenomenon. For Kierkegaard repetition is to be likened to recollection, and as he himself states on the first page of the work: "You can say whatever you wish about it [repetition], it will play a very important role in recent philosophy; for Repetition is a decisive expression for what "Recollection" was for the Greeks. Just like when they taught that all perception is a recollection, so the new philosophy will teach that all of life is a repetition." "Philosophical Fragments" is by many considered Kierkegaard's actual religious-philosophical main work. It is the first book written under the important pseudonum Johannes Climacus, and it is here that Kierkegaard unfolds the tension between philosophy and religion, in a attempt to find an historical onset for eternal consciousness, opposing the ideological thought inherited by Plato, Aristotle and Hegel. In many ways, "Prefaces", written under the pseudonym Nicolaus Notabene [i.e. "please note carefully"] constitutes the key to the understanding og Kierkegaard. Kierkegaard stressed the importance of the prefaces to his entire philosophical production, stating that they contained things of utmost importance. With this work, Kierkegaard told his readers quite directly to make sure to read his prefaces carefully, as they contain the key to understanding his works. Himmelstrup 53 + 62 + 70

Hist. Sci., 1975, XXVIH/2, p. 136-137). (Cf. Maitron CD-Rom. (Morel, ‘Dict. biogr. de la psychiatrie’, p. 149).
