The Life of a Travelling Physician,

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans,, 1843. from his first introduction to practice; including twenty years' wanderings through the greater part of Europe. 3 volumes, octavo. Original brown horizontally-ribbed cloth, gilt lettered and blind stamped spines, ornamental blind panels on sides, yellow coated endpapers. Hand-coloured lithograph frontispiece in each volume. Spines rolled, heads of spines nicked, touch of foxing to plates. A very good copy, with the half-titles in volumes I & II (not called-for in volume III), publisher's 32-page catalogue at end of volume I (dated July 1843 - not mentioned by Abbey) and terminal advertisement leaf in volume III. First edition, a particularly attractive set in the original cloth. Lefevre (1796?1846), physician and traveller, knighted for his services to the British embassy in St Petersburg, "spent fifteen years in Russia, practising first and briefly in Odessa, before moving to St Petersburg. He returned to England in 1842. His very generalised Russian memoirs occupy all of vol. II and the beginning of vol. III" (Cross). Provenance: bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, who inherited and improved a successful group of retail pharmacies, John Hayhurst & Son, based in Nelson, Lancashire, and became an avid collector of naval history and of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings; "Mr. R. J. Hayhurst believes that most pharmacists neglect one of their most valuable assets ? the tradition and dignity of the pharmacy. His historical sense, indeed, is no narrow one, for his feeling for the past reveals itself also in his hobbies. A collector of books, in a delightful room at his home, white-painted bookshelves stacked high on all the available wall space show to advantage the hand-tooled leather bindings of a collection that has been acquired slowly and with discrimination over the years" (The Chemist and Druggist, 7 September, 1957). With a note stating that this copy was purchased at the Holker Hall sale. An uncommon work, particularly so in such a bright exemplar of the very pleasing original cloth bindings.

On the Calorific Effects of Magneto-Electricity, and the Mechanical Value of Heat" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science 23, 1843, pp. 263-276; 347-355; and 435-443

1843 - FIRST EDITION OF THE DISCOVERY AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE EQUIVALENCE OF HEAT AND ENERGY; all three parts of this paper are present in this volume. In this 1843 paper, a greatly expanded version of a presentation he gave before the British Association earlier in that year, Joule clearly states that heat is a form of energy and that motion and heat are mutually interchangeable. Building upon the work of Rumford and Thompson, Joule shows that the heating effect he had quantified in 1841 was due to generation of heat in the conductor and not its transfer from another part of the equipment. His paper provided "experimental proof of the mechanical equivalent of heat for physical phenomena" and "was fundamental to the establishment of the principle of the conservation of energy" (PMM, p. 196); Norman 1143). Here "Joule noted the relationship between the amount of heat generated by an electric current in a conductor and the resistance of the conductor, and the creation of heat when water was forced through narrow tubes or through a paddle wheel" (Norman). "Causing the potential energy of a raised weight to be used up in turning a paddle which generated heat by stirring water in a vessel, and observing the rise of temperature so produced, Joule found that 772 foot-pounds of work served to heat one pound of water through one degree (Fahrenheit) on the thermometer he employed, at a particular part of the scale" (Thermodynamics of Engineers, 10). From this Joule concluded that heat was a form of energy; still further, he was able to calculate that in any given system, the sum total of energy was constant and convertible" (Norman 1143). Joule called the amount of work (in foot-pounds) required to create a unit of heat 'the mechanical equivalent of heat' and argued that because motion and heat were mutually interchangeable, in every single case, a given amount of work would generate the same amount of heat (assuming the work rendered is completely converted to heat energy). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor & Francis. (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). Complete. [4], viii, [552], 4. One plate and in-text illustrations throughout. Handsomely, solidly, and tightly rebound in three quarter brown calf over marbled paper boards. Tightly bound; gilt-ruled raised bands at the spine. Gilt-lettered red and black morocco spine labels. Slight toning to the preliminaries, otherwise bright and very clean thoughout. Near fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Painting of Ink War

(Late Edo?) - Two charming humorous coloured ink and watercolour paintings depicting an "ink war". Two paintings on two joined sheets, 38.5 x 164cm. Handscroll extended including decorative silk borders and wooden rollers 38.5 x 210cm. Light damp stain approximately 4 x 4.5cm in three places along upper edge, occasional light soiling but otherwise good. This delightful handscroll featuring paintings of two groups of Japanese aristocrats very actively fighting against each other reflects a Japanese comic tradition of painting that goes back over a thousand years. The images show the aristocrats splashing ink at each other with long-handled brushes. One even uses a rather ingenious ink pump to propel the ink some distance directly into the face of his "enemy"! Full of energy and humour this is a delightful piece. As mentioned above the "ink wars" paintings have a long history in Japan. The most notable example is the Ch?j? jinbutsu giga ?????? [Caricatures of Frolic Birds, Animals, and humans] scroll painted in the 12th century and now in the collection of the K?zan-ji Temple. It is said that during the 8th century in the Nara period the emperor ordered his aristocrats to play with ink. The emperor called this event an "ink fight" and he had a Tosa School artist paint the scene. In 1843 Utagawa Kuniyoshi inspired by the Tosa School artist again used this motif as did Kawanabe Ky?sai ???? a little later. This scroll has no signature or date and as the style is unique it cannot be attributed to any school however it appears that this delightful "ink war" was probably painted in the Late Edo period.

        å¢¨åˆæˆ¦åœ– Painting of Ink War...

(Late Edo?). Two charming humorous coloured ink and watercolour paintings depicting an "ink war". The most notable example is the ChōjÅ« jinbutsu giga 鳥獣人物戯画 [Caricatures of Frolic Birds, Animals, and humans] scroll painted in the 12th century and now in the collection of the Kōzan-ji Temple. It is said that during the 8th century in the Nara period the emperor ordered his aristocrats to play with ink. The emperor called this event an "ink fight" and he had a Tosa School artist paint the scene. In 1843 Utagawa Kuniyoshi inspired by the Tosa School artist again used this motif as did Kawanabe Kyōsai 河鍋暁齋 a little later. This scroll has no signature or date and as the style is unique it cannot be attributed to any school however it appears that this delightful "ink war" was probably painted in the Late Edo period.         Exposition de la théorie des chances et des probabilités.

Paris: Librairie de L. Hachette,, 1843. Octavo. Contemporary red cloth, black morocco label to spine lettered gilt, top edge brown, edges speckled red. Folding diagram to rear. Spine faded, skilful repair to spine panel and lower portion of label, light scratches to covers, spot of wear to front cover and tips, light foxing and occasional faint dampstain to contents. A very good copy. First edition. This is a significant association copy, with the ownership inscription of the logician and philosopher John Venn (1834?1923), the inventor of the eponymous diagram, on the title page: "John Venn. G & C Coll. 1880." Venn entered Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1853, obtaining his degree in 1857 and going on to become a fellow of the college and President in 1903. Venn popularised the frequentist view on probability which Cournot introduced here. Cournot was one of four writers from three countries (the others being Jakob Friederick Fries, Richard Leslie Ellis, and John Stuart Mill) who "independently proposed interpretations of probability that were fundamentally frequentist in character" (Skyrms and Harper, p. 188). However, "despite this early efflorescence, the frequency theory did not begin to gain widespread acceptance until its careful elaboration, nearly a quarter of a century later, in John Venn's Logic of Chance", published in 1866 (ibid.). Uncommon in commerce, with five copies traced at auction since 1975.

The Island of Sardinia, Including Pictures of the Manners and Customs of the Sardinians, and Notes on the Antiquities and Modern Objects of Interest in the Island: to which is Added Some Account of the House of Savoy., in Three Volumes.

xvi, 345, 2; vi, 356; vii, 342 pp. 8vo. Includes fold-out map of Sardinia, fold-out genealogical sketch (family tree) of the House of Savoy. Engraved frontispieces, illustrations in text. A 19th century Italian travelogue by an English barrister, based on a trip he made to Sardinia in 1843. In addition to providing detailed information on contemporary customs, Tyndale presents an extensive history of the island from the earliest colonies. While Sardinia is now a part of Italy, this was not quite the case at the time Tyndale wrote this work; for hundreds of years it had a feudal government administrated by the Savoyards, and this only changed after decades of protest. In 1838 the feudal system was discard, and in 1848 the island joined in what would be a thirteen-year war for the unification of Italy. Sardinian culture is unique in comparison to other regions of Italy during the same era, so Tyndale's work is an important historical record of its similarities to, and differences from, mainland Italy. First edition. Includes both fold-outs. Boards rubbed, bookplate of Thomas Johnson on front endpaper of each volume, minor pencil notes on endpapers, including two sketches of what are ostensibly coastal views of Sardinia, and two separate sketches of what appear to be cameras (this would be a very early example -- the daguerreotype was unveiled in 1839). London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, Publisher in Ordinary to Her Majesty, 1849. First Edition. Collectible; Very Good/No Jacket.
