The Rationale of Malting, a description of the actinic and cylindrical principles, ... some recently discovered processes ...

110pp, wood engraved illustrations.London, Sold by the Author [c1860?]. Quarto publisher's blindstamped cloth (a little bumped and rubbed); Rather a good copy. This seems quite rare. Part announcement of new invention, part monograph, and part trade catalogue - a fair amount is given over to Tizard's own machines and publications and those for which he is sole agent. Tizard was responsible for one of the bibles of mid 19th century brewing, the substantial 'Theory and Practice of Brewing' (1843 and here advertised in its fourth edition, 1857), but while that and a couple of his other books are readily found in library catalogues around the world this book is remarkably elusive.

A Voyage of Discovery Towards the North Pole Performed in His Majesty's Ships Dorthea and Trent under the Command of David Buchan, R.N., 1818

London: Richard Bentley, 1843. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 351 pp, with engraved frontispiece, map tipped in at front pastedown (originally in a pocket), and five additional engravings, including two folding panoramic views. First edition in original binding (rebacked, with most of original spine laid down), in custom quarter-leather slipcase and chemise. Corners rubbed, some foxing (mainly to plates), all else very good. Buchan (b. 1780) was provided with detailed orders to find a passage through the ice at the North Pole and then to sail through Bering Strait into the Pacific Ocean. His second in command was Lt. (later Sir) John Franklin, who captained the Trent, on which the author served. The two ships spent many weeks stuck in pack ice northwest of Spitsbergen, and ultimately were too heavily damaged by high winds to carry on. Though they failed to find a route across the pole, the expedition did produce many valuable scientific and cartographic observations (DCB; Arctic Bib 1230). Beechey's narrative is only first-hand account of the expedition.

Temple of Minerva or the Parthenon. " Tempio di Minerva o Parthenone

Greece: Rome Unknown. 1843. Copper engraving of the Parthenon by Andrea Gasperini. Black & white; verso blank. Dedication to "Signor Alessandro Cipriani di Livorno, amatore e dislinto cultore di belle arti" with the artist's sincere friendship and gratiude. A rare engraving, as far as we can determine it was seperately issued, ie never bound as a book with the others of the series. The large view shows the front of the Parthenon with various figures; in the foreground lie broken columns and pieces of the pediment. Good dark impression; some spotting within image; tear to lower margin, repaired. Andrea Gasparini, produced a series of engravings of Monuments of Athens, all dedicated to Alessandro Cipriani of Livorno, little is known about the artist or why Sig. Cipriani was interested in the views. The engravings are interesting for what they show of life in Greece after the fall of the Ottomans; whilst showing the monuments they also show life in Athens as a Greek town. In a number of the views Gasparini shows festivals or celebrations taking place at the sites.; they also reveal how small the 'city' was . Athens was chosen as the Greek capital for historical and sentimental reasons, not because it was a large city: there are few buildings in Athens from the period of Byzantine Empire and the 18th century. At the time these views were published new buildings were being erected : the University of Athens (1837), the Royal Palace (now the Greek Parliament Building) (1843), the National Garden of Athens (1840), the National Library of Greece (1842) but it is clear from the views that Athens was a small town.at the time of their drawing. Folding tinted lithographic frontispiece and 7 other tinted lithographic plates. First edition. Allen was Assistant Chaplain to the Bombay establishment, and accompanied Nott's forces through the campaign from April 1841 to February 1843. "Allen's diary offers a perceptive vision of the landscapes bringing to mind Biblical scenes of the Old Testament Youthful and exuberant at the campaign's advent, the diary reflects an older and more mature cleric by its end" (Riddick). A fairly uncommon account, this not the sharpest copy, but some minor interior defects more than compensated for by the extremely appealing binding. Bruce 4457: Riddick 67

London: Chapman & Hall,, 1843?8. 5 volumes, octavo. Original plum and red cloth, titles and pictorial design to spines and upper boards gilt, borders to boards blocked in blind, yellow endpapers to each volume, all edges gilt. Housed in a red cloth slipcase. A Christmas Carol with hand-coloured frontispiece, 3 full-page, hand-coloured plates, and illustrations within the text. Other volumes with frontispiece and engraved title, and illustrations throughout. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown of each volume save for The Battle of Life. A Christmas Carol with contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown, toned cloth, chips at the head of the spine, and a few small spots to contents, but overall a nice, fresh copy. The Chimes with dark markings to lower board, The Cricket on the Hearth with contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown. An excellent set. First editions of Dickens's famous sequence of annual Christmas books. The first edition points of A Christmas Carol are notoriously complicated: this copy has the first edition title and prelims in the third state as usual (with the 1843 title page printed in blue and red, the half title and title verso printed in blue, and the heading on page [1] changed to Stave One), and with the text uncorrected as called for by Eckel. The Battle of Life has the fourth state vignette title, as usual.
