A HOLOGRAPHIC LETTER BY J.B. STAPLES, ATTORNEY FOR JABEZ B. CROOK, 1843.

New York, 1843. A holographic letter, sheet size opens to be. 40 x 25.4 cm., folds down to be 13 x 7 cm., very good, wax. seal [torn to open the letter], single page of text 20 x 25.. 4 cm., very good, written in a bold hand Dated Dec. 9, 1843.. This is a fascinating and superb piece of diplomatic history vis-à-vis the first American commercial trade treaty with China, thus stabilizing trade with China and America. This item concerns the gift to China of a working steam train model. * The letter is addressed to Gilbert Thompson, Chief Engineer of the U.S. Navy, Washington City, D.C. Forwarding a $60 claim for the model of a Steam Train Engine, made by Jabez B. Crook "to your order last summer, to be taken to China." * WHO WAS JABEZ B. CROOK: Crook was a very skilled machinist, and he produced a model Steam Train of such high quality that it was intended as a diplomatic gift to the Emperor of China, to open commercial trade with America. Crook was later known for his superb quality bamboo fishing rods and was a pioneer for his hand-crafted fishing reels. . With the new appointment of Caleb Cushing to be the Honorable U.S. ENVOY EXTRAORDIANARY TO CHINA [and former Massachusetts Congressman] Cushing wanted to impress the Chinese with America's new and technological marvels such as the telegraph, new daguerreotype photography and a model steam train engine. To that end, Cushing enlisted John R. Peters, Jr., a brilliant young engineer to accompany his diplomatic mission to China in order to "exhibit the finest fruits of American mechanical ingenuity before the Chinese." It was most likely that Peters commissioned Crook to sell the U.S. Government this steam train placing the order through Thomson, a lawyer who was the Navy's "Chief Engineer" because his father, a Justice of the Supreme court had once been a Secretary of the Navy. More research is needed about the model train and its voyage and delivery to the Chinese. * THE STEAM TRAIN: A fascinating association in that a similar if not identical steam train, telegraph and other American marvels were delivered to the Japanese in 1854 as gifts to the Japanese, all of which is well documented in the Commodore Perry Expedition. We are still researching to confirm this is the exact one made by Crook. The fact remains that a steam train was given as one of many gifts to the Japanese, and for sure, Caleb Cushing was also involved with these gifts to Japan with the opening of trade with Commodore Perry just a few years after the opening of China. See Pineau below. * Although Cushing did petition to have audience with the Emperor of China, after his arrival to Canton, this was denied, instead met with the Governor of Guandong & Guangxi who was the highest Chinese official he could muster, and said to be the emissary of the Emperor of China. The Treaty of Wanghia was signed on July 3, 1844, at Kun Iam Temple, a village in north Macau. * CONDITION: The letter is in excellent condition, with a very faint and small stain on the recto, and another on the verso which does not affect any text. There are two black stamps from "BARNUM'S CITI HOTEL, MONUMENT SQUARE BALTIMORE" on the verso, along with the addressee's address "Gilbert Thompson Esq, Chief Engineer of Navy, Washington City. D.C." Folded and red seal wax sealed, a minor bit of paper was torn [naturally] when this letter was opened. The remains of the seal closure on opposite side. No envelope as was standard for the times, but having an integral envelope, by folding and wax sealing the paper. Nice condition boldly written in wide pen. Signed by J.G. Staples the lawyer. * REFERENCES: * The Treaty of Wanghia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Wanghia * [PINEAU, Roger.]: THE JAPAN EXPEDITION 1852-1855 OF COMMODORE MATTHEW CALBRAITH PERRY: see pages 173-174 last paragraph: "We have established a magnetic telegraph....we have laid down the entire railroad track sent from the United States, and put the steam engine, tender, and car in excellent practical operation, carrying round the circle many of the astonished natives. We have exhibited and explained the use of numerous useful inventions of our country...." And on p. 176-177: AMERICAN GIFTS. "...First assistant engineer Danby with the requisite number of mechanics, was employed in unpacking and putting in working order the locomotive engine, whilst Messrs. Draper and Williams were equally busy in preparing the erect the telegraphic posts for the extension of the magnetic lines [for the telegraph]." * RE: Crook: Crook's fishing tackle: http://fishinghistory.blogspot.com/2009/01/thursday-review-o rcas-reel-news-january.html *** Color scans can be sent by email.         Juggernaut: It's Present State, under British Patronage & Support, as settled by Lord Auckland. With an Introductory Letter to Lord Fitzgerald and Vesci.

London: Hatchard and Son, 1843 - Octavo. Stitched as issued. A touch of foxing to title page, light signs of handling to back cover. An excellent copy. Second edition, originally published in 1842, but with a new Introductory Letter (dated 1843); both editions are rare, this one recorded by Copac in only two British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Cambridge), and OCLC locates just one (Peabody Essex Museum). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed at the head of title page: "The Revd. Dr Jarvis, with the author's respects". "Juggernaut" was the British word for the enormous Hindu temple car used at the Jagannath Temple at Puri. The East India Company extracted a toll from visitors to the shrine and there was uproar in some quarters in Britain about what was considered a levy on "idolatry". Lord Auckland oversaw the abolition of the practice in 1839. Strachan mentions in his Introductory Letter that publication of this revised edition had been suspended because of the "disastrous intelligence from Affghanistan [sic]", a reference to the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). This is Kierkegaard's first major philosophical work propounding the theory of choice and existence; only 525 copies of this edition were published in 1843 at Kierkegaard's own expense. As a thinker, Kierkegaard had to wait for the twentieth century to find his audience; he is now generally considered to be, however eccentric, one of the most important Christian philosophers." (Printing and the Mind of Man, # 314.) Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. Kierkegaard's magnum opus Either/Or was published 20 February 1843; it was mostly written during Kierkegaard's stay in Berlin, where he took notes on Schelling's Philosophy of Revelation. Either/Or includes essays of literary and music criticism and a set of romantic-like-aphorisms, as part of his larger theme of examining the reflective and philosophical structure of faith. Edited by "Victor Eremita", the book contained the papers of an unknown "A" and "B" which the pseudonymous author claimed to have discovered in a secret drawer of his secretary. Eremita had a hard time putting the papers of "A" in order because they were not straightforward. "B"'s papers were arranged in an orderly fashion. Both of these characters are trying to become religious individuals. Each approached the idea of first love from an esthetic and an ethical point of view. The book is basically an argument about faith and marriage with a short discourse at the end telling them they should stop arguing. Eremita thinks "B", a judge, makes the most sense. Kierkegaard stressed the "how" of Christianity as well as the "how" of book reading in his works rather than the "what" WikipediaThis collection is on consignment with LDRB.

The Great Aerial Navigator, or Atmospheric Machine! Under the superintendence of the ?Aerial Conveyance Company,? for the conveying of passengers, troops and government despatches to India and China, in the short space of five days, by means of a new improved system of ?aerial navigation? adapted also to proceed on water or land, and can be used as a most destructive instrument of war .?

Vickers. 1843 - Single sheet folio broadside with central woodcut illus. beneath title. Approx. 37.5 x 50cm. Mounted on cream card. v.g. Not in the BM print collection, not recorded on Copac or OCLC. A wonderful broadside satirising the Victorian fixation with air travel and the remarkable if implausible designs for accomplishing success; this one, by an anonymous ?inventor?, is accompanied with a key explaining ?the most extraordinary invention of modern times? It includes a mechanical eagle with smoke released through its mouth, a telegraph, parachutes, a boat ?in the Chinese style?, and eight paddles that act as fans whilst in the air or actual paddles when in water. The explanatory text is concluded with a letter from the inventor to ?Her Majesty?s Ministers?: ?Placed at the head of a great nation, I call on you to avail yourselves of my invention, which I will prove to you, if adopted, all of the nations of the earth combined can never stand against our power. But, my Lords, I do not mention that fact, with the view of making my country the tyrant of the world, but for the more noble purpose of causing her to be the arbiter of every good? After the first flight of a hot air-balloon in 1783 a great swathe of wonderfully implausible designs for air travel emerged. Robertson?s Minerva, designed in 1804, was intended to carry sixty people and up to 150,000 pounds in weight. In 1843 William Samuel Henson created the Aerial Transit Company which patented the aerial steam carriage, a significant and pioneering move towards powered flight. The inventor of the Aerial Navigator ingeniously combined both steam and balloon power with the additional bonus of being capable of both land and sea travel.

Diary of Travels and Adventures in Upper India, from Bareilly, in Rohilcund, to Hurdwar, and Nahun, in the Himmalaya mountains, with a tour in Bundelcund, a sporting excursion in the kingdom of Oude, and a voyage down the Ganges, by C. J. C. Davidson ... late Lt.-Colonel of Engineers, Bengal

London: Henry Colburn, 1843. 2 volumes, octavo. (7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches). Contemporary calf bound for the Northern Light Board, covers with a border built up from fillets ruled in gilt and blind, the spines in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, green morocco in the third, the uppermost compartment tooled in gilt with Northern Light Board stamp, the others with repeat panelling in gilt, marbled endpapers, marbled edges Provenance: Northern Light Board, Scotland (binding) A very fine copy of the first edition of this charming and surprisingly rare work. As the title suggests, the work is in fact made up of a series of narratives describing various trips made by the author. The first volume is in three parts. The first part, "Travels from Bareilly, in Rohilcund, to Hurdwar and Nahun," ends abruptly on p.168. On the following page, whilst bewailing the loss to the "literature of the age", the author explains that "a vile thief entered my tents at night, and robbed me of my second volume ... In this manner did I lose my carefully-written account of the sub-Himalayan range, which cost me fully eight months' labour while in the hills." The second part in the first volume is on Bundelcund, and the volume ends with the first section of the author's "Journal of a Voyage [started in December 1839] from Allahabad to Calcutta, via Dacca and the Soonderbunds." Volume two is made up of the concluding part of the "Journal of a Voyage...", followed by "A Sporting Tour [undertaken in 1836] in the Kingdom of Oude". The writing style of the author, which manages to be both humourous and bombastic at the same time, allied with his obvious deep knowledge of the country and the people are what give this work its period charm. The work is quite rare, with no other copies listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty five years. A fine copy of a delightful gem which deserves a place in any serious collection of books on the Indian sub-continent.

The Orchardist's Companion a quarterly journal, devoted to the history, character, properties, modes of cultivation, and all other matters appertaining to the fruits of the United States, embellished with richly colored designs of the natural size, painted from the actual fruits when in their finest condition

Philadelphia: A. Hoffy, 1843. 3 volumes in one, quarto. (11 1/8 x 8 3/4 inches). 3 letterpress title pages (2 with large wood-engraved vignettes). 58 (of 60) hand-coloured lithographed plates of American fruit by and after Hoffy, E.Quayle and D.S.Quintin, all printed by P.S.Duval of Philadelphia. (Lacking the first plate in 'vol.II' 'Elton Pine Strawberry' and the fourth 'Bellflower'). Contemporary black hard-grain morocco, covers with outer gilt triple fillet border, spine in five compartments with semi-raised bands, the bands highlighted with tooling in gilt and flanked by double fillets in blind, lettered in gilt in the second compartment, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges Provenance: John H. Edmonds (Leicester, Mass., inscription, dated 1901) "The first American journal completely devoted to fruit" (Oak Spring Pomona) and one of the rarest of American works illustrated with hand-coloured lithographs: this copy from the deluxe coloured issue and including the very rare second volume. Only one complete set of this short-lived high quality periodical is recorded as having sold at auction in the past 25 years. It was launched under the patronage of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as a quarterly journal dedicated to fruit and fruit growing in the United States. Hoffy intended that each annual volume should be made up of two sections. The first to include text with wood-engraved illustrations covering all aspects of fruit growing: reporting on the latest varieties, discussions on their relative merits, papers on pests and diseases of fruit, etc. The second section was to include accurate and beautiful lithographic plates of individual varieties, hand-coloured or uncoloured, each plate to be faced by one or more pages of descriptive text including useful (and historically important) lists of the various names by which the varieties are known. The work was sold at seven dollars per annum if paid in advance, or two dollars per part for the four parts, for the `Best or Colored Edition' or four dollars in advance or one dollar twenty-five cents per issue for the uncoloured issue. The present volume contains all that was published (five quarterly parts) of a work that seems to have foundered because it was too expensive for the market it was aimed at. It includes plates of 13 (of 14) varieties of apple, 2 apricot, 4 cherry, 3 grape, 15 pear, 12 peach, 7 plum and 2 (of 3) strawberry. "Alfred Hoffy worked for several printers of lithographs in Philadelphia. Among other subjects, he drew several portraits, including one of the original Siamese twins, Eng and Chang, in 1837, but his enthusiasm for recording fruit trees seems to have taken up a good deal of his time. His Orchardist's Companion was the first American journal completely devoted to fruit and its cultivation" (Sandra Raphael An Oak Spring Pomona ,p.155). After the failure of the present work Hoffy went on to make two other attempts at publishing similar works. In 1851 he published The American Pomologist (with ten plates) and in 1860 he tried again with The North American Pomologist which included 36 plates including the ten issued in 1851. Copies of the present work vary in collation. It was issued in parts, but Hoffy recommended that subscribers eventually bind the parts into two separate volumes for each year: one of preliminary text, and a second containing the plates and their descriptive pages - this explains the sub-titles to the first two titles (Vol.I April. 1841 and Vol. 2 April. 1841). The third title is sub-titled Volume 2 and is dated 1842-3. Wainwright notes that Hoffy issued parts of the Orchardist's Companion on a quarterly schedule beginning in 1841, with each part containing twelve illustrations of fruit. The final installment of the work, which raised the total to sixty plates is particularly rare. In the present copy all the text and the plates are in a single volume. Despite Hoffy's attempts at similar efforts, enthusiasm for his pomological productions waned. "Patronized by an impressive list of subscribers headed by the President of the United States, endorsed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the recipient of a silver medal awarded by the American Institute of New York, The Orchardist's Companion nevertheless withered on the vine for lack of adequate support" (Wainwright). Cost was certainly a factor; though great plans were laid, no further additions to The Orchardist's Companion were forthcoming. Still, Hoffy was successful in creating an American fruit book of considerable beauty that became an early benchmark for the genre. The Slavery Abolition Act passed by the UK Parliament in 1833 came into force on August 1, 1834.The British antislavery orator and activist George Donisthorpe Thompson (1804-1878) worked toward the abolition of slavery through lecture tour and by introducing legislation while serving as a member of Parliament. An able orator, he was hired by the London Anti- Slavery Society in 1831. While in Scotland in 1832, where he became interested in abolishing slavery in the United States as well as other parts of the world, he met William Lloyd Garrison and the African-American abolitionist Nathaniel Paul. Invited to visit New England by Garrison, he traveled to the US in 1834 where he drew the attention of pro-slavery supporters and was forced to flee for his life. The Hobart Town Courier later printed a letter in which Thompson stated that he had ".left the United Sates to escape the asassins knife.", the editor noting that attempts had been made to "burn and murder" him in several US towns. He returned to the US following the passing of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850. By then, the abolitionist movement having substantially grown and gained in influence, Thompson found a warmer welcome. Returning to London, he and his son founded the London Emancipation Society which supported the Union during the Civil War. Returning to America, allied himself with William Wells Brown and met President Abraham Lincoln. Throughout his life, Thompson was a powerful voice for emancipation. He supported East Indian reform, free trade, Chartism, non-resistance and the peace movement, often protesting legislation that offered only limited restriction on slavery.A remarkable example of the autograph of one of history's greatest abolitionist.

Introduction by Daniel Ramée. Paris: chez A. Hauser, 1843. 2 volumes, folio. (17 5/8 x 12 1/4 inches). Text: [1-]62pp., extra-illustrated with a lithographed upper cover on light brown paper, from an original wrapper, bound as an additional title. Plates: 432 lithographic plates only (of 444), after Chapuy and others. (Spotting to about 65 plates). Text: stitched with linen backing; Plates: plates 13-220 unbound as issued, contained (with the text) in a 20th-century green leather-backed cloth portfolio, titled in gilt on the spine; plates 221-444 unbound as issued, contained within a second matching portfolio and slipcase, with an original upper wrapper pasted to inside of each portfolio A spectacular and very rare visual survey of early European architecture by some of best French lithographers of their time. There is only one copy of this work listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years. Chapuy, an architectural draughtsman, illustrator and lithographer, served as an officer in the French marine engineers before turning to art and illustration full time. From the early 1820s onwards, he contributed to a string of works on individual buildings, and also more wide-ranging surveys. The present work is a culmination and summation of all his earlier work - it offers the largest selection of his work, as well as covering the largest area geographically: from Venice to Granada to the Low Countries to Germany. The title is somewhat misleading, as the selection also includes a substantial number of examples of lithographs by and after other artists, indeed, as a whole, it offers a fair sample of the work of many of the major artist/lithographers working in France at the time, including P. Benoist, J. Peyre, Ficot, Guesdon, A. Bichebois, Jacottet, Bachelier, Cuvillier, etc. The images range from pure architectural plans, to reconstructions based on earlier sources, to contemporary views of the sites, taken from life, and peopled with either their medieval inhabitants or their 19th-century descendants: the best images are truly spectacular.         A System of Logic:

London: John W. Parker,, 1843. Ratiocinative and Inductive, Being a Connected View of the Principles of Evidence, and the Methods of Scientific Investigation. 2 volumes, octavo (256 × 135 mm). Bound in contemporary brown diced calf, twin black morocco labels to spine lettered gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Housed in a custom red slipcase. Endleaves mildly foxed, tips worn, spine ends slightly worn, board edges rubbed, minor loss to upper tip of Vol. II. A very good set, internally fresh. First edition of the author's philosophical work, outlining the five principles of inductive reasoning, now known as Mill's methods. Often considered as Mill's best work, A System of Logic was twelve years in the making. "Mill began his book with the assertion that he was not concerned with the contested territory of epistemology, but only with the structure of logical argument. This austere agenda proved, however, impossible to observe at every point, and the text frequently spilt over into deep questions of human understanding [...] In Mill's view the study of the phenomenal world was a self-contained process of inference between induction and deduction, the latter being the formulation of general laws out of conjunctions of the more particular 'empirical' laws derived from the former." (ODNB). With the bookplate of Dr Sydney Ross, scientist, teacher and bibliophile, and Professor of Colloid Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

        THE IRISH SKETCH-BOOK

1843. [the McCutcheon copy] By Mr. M. A. Titmarsh. With Numerous Engravings on Wood, drawn by the Author. In Two Volumes. London: Chapman and Hall, 1843. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth lettered in gilt. First Edition of this very early Thackeray work of social commentary and humor, illustrated by himself (Thackeray was, after all, an illustrator before he was an author). Although Thackeray originally planned to travel in 1840 to Ireland (his wife was a native of County Cork),~It was not until 1842, under heavy financial pressure, that he began his Irish tour... The book is cleverly written and gives a straightforward account of Ireland as it appeared to the intelligent traveller before the Great Famine. Sharp contrasts are made between the wealth of the landed classes and the grinding poverty he observed on all sides. His fulminations against government, absentee landlords and clerical indifference reveal how deeply he was touched by the condition of the people [O'Dalaigh].~This title was Thackeray's first book to be published by the firm of Chapman & Hall. Also, in his dedication to the Irish author Charles Lever (whom he met on the trip), Thackeray's real name here first appears in a published book. The "numerous illustrations" referred to on the title pages consist of a frontispiece plate in each volume plus a total of 38 woodcuts within the text.~This, the copy of the novelist, playwright and book-collector George Barr McCutcheon (with his bookplate in each volume), is in remarkable condition -- fine except for one faint scar near the top of one front cover, and one cracked (but firm) endpaper. Van Duzer 96 (his copy rebound). Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with twin chemises.

A. v. Werner, (.)".

Mens corporis; a treatise on the operations of the mind in sleep.

London: John W. Parker. 1843. 12mo., (4) + 252pp., very slight spotting here and there, in a good recent binding of quarter calf over marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands and a label. A good copy from the contemporary library of Edward Mangin (1772-1852), the author and scholar and long time resident of Bath>, with ownership notes in his hand ('The gift of the Revd. Fountain Elwin, July 31st 1843. Edwd. Mangin>' and, on the title-page, 'Edwd. Mangin Bath July 31. 1843>'). First edition: uncommon. A scholarly and thoroughly researched study of sleep and dreams by, curiously, a Lincoln's Inn barrister, who observes that 'the operations of the mind in sleep have not been investigated with the attention they deserve. Dreams', moreover, 'have been considered too vague and uncertain in their nature to be submitted to analytic investigation, and almost unworthy of metaphysical inquiry'. Elwin divides his subject into seven academic segments: 1. 'The nature of mind, and the sensative and insensative states'. 2. 'The mental action in the sensative state'. 3. 'The mental operations in the insensative state'. 4. 'The period of transition'. 5. The operations of mind in the insensative state, continued.' 6. 'The construction of mind. The moral power and freewill'. 7. 'Various opinions concerning the nature of mind and instinct.'

Ruban. As well as other views of Sidon we have views of Petra and Sinai, Egypt,Tyre, Nubia, the Jordan, and Baalbec. Please inquire for further details. Roberts set sail for Egypt on 31 August 1838, a few years after Owen Jones. His intent was to produce drawings that he could later use as the basis for the paintings and lithographs to sell to the public. Egypt was much in vogue at this time, and travellers, collectors and lovers of antiquities were keen to buy works inspired by the East or depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt. Roberts made a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout, he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches. On his return to Britain, Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce these lavishly illustrated plates. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments, with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1.

        Manuscript Mathematics Cipherbook

Lancaster, PA, 1843. Journal. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Over 130 pages of handwritten mathematics exercises with a multi-color calligraphic title page and similar headings on each page. Sound binding. Clean pages. Some cover wear and soiling. This cipherbook is somewhat unusual in that instead of focusing on basic commercial arithmetic like most copybooks, its sections include rather more abstract (though still practical) problems: Single Rule of 3, Double Rule of 3, Loss and Gain, Exchange, Decimal Fractions, Cube Root, Alligation, Position, Double Position, Arithmetical Progression, Geometrical Progression, Compound Interest, and concluding with a series of Promiscuous Questions. Census records show that Barr was eleven years old when he prepared this cipherbook. He lived in Lancaster for his entire life and became a rather prosperous owner of a large "Agricultural Implement and Seed Warehouse."

Lectures on the Constitutional Law, for the Use of the Law Class...

1843. Tucker's Important 1843 Lectures on the Constitution Tucker, Henry St. George [1780-1848]. Lectures on the Constitutional Law, for the Use of the Law Class at the University of Virginia. Richmond: Printed for Shepherd and Colin, 1843. 242 pp. 12mo. (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary pebbled cloth, light rubbing, minor wear to spine ends and corners, dampspotting to front board, some fading to spine. Light toning, occasional light foxing. Early owner signature to head of title page, interior otherwise clean. * Only edition. Tucker proposes a vigorous defense of states-rights principles in the manner of John Taylor of Caroline. A notably sophisticated argument, it balances detailed analysis of the U.S. Constitution with criticism of Joseph Story, Daniel Webster and other proponents of a powerful Federal government. Tucker was a judge of the superior courts of chancery for the Winchester and Clarksburg districts, President of Virginia's Supreme Court of Appeals, the director of a private law school in Winchester and, later in life, Professor of Law at the University of Virginia. Works that grew out of the classroom include Commentaries on the Laws of Virginia (1836-1837). Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2928.

Etruskische und Kampanische Vasenbilder des Königlichen Museums zu Berlin

Berlin: Verlag von G. Reimer, 1843. Imperial folio, measuring 21 x 14.5 inches, contemporary calf over marbled blue paper boards, raised bands, spine compartments decorated and lettered in gilt. Letterpress title, descriptive text, and register, followed by thirty color lithographed plates (twenty-five single-page and five double-page) numbered I-XXX, and five monochrome plates (one single-page and four double-page) lettered A-E. Small circular library label of Honoré T.P. Joseph d'Albert, 8th Duc de Luynes, affixed to base of spine. Lightest shelfwear, corners repaired, one bifolium of text embrowned (pp. 41-44), occasional faint foxing. First edition of Eduard Gerhard?'s massive survey of ancient Etruscan and Campanian vase paintings in the museums of Berlin, illustrated with thirty brilliant color lithographs in terracotta, red, and black. Head archaeologist at the Royal Museum of Berlin, Gerhard was a co-founder of the first international archaeological society, Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica, and a tireless cataloguer and classifier of antiquities. This volume reproduces the scenes found on ancient vases found throughout Italy, featuring the legends of Ariadne, Hercules, Achilles, Aegisthos, and the Calydonian hunt, among others; particularly moving is the image of Aeneas carrying his father Anchises out of the ruins of Troy (XXV). The oversized color plates are strikingly sharp and vivid, as though just printed. This copy from the library of Honoré d?'Albert, 8th Duc de Luynes, noted nineteenth-century French archaeologist and collector of antiquities; his illustrated catalog of his own collection, Description de Quelques Vases Peints Etrusques, Italiotes, Siciliens et Grecs, appeared in Paris in 1840. Luynes would later donate his ancient vases to the Cabinet des Médailles at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Text in German. Brunet II, 1551. A very good copy of a stunning book.
