Enten-Eller. Et Livs=Fragment udgivet af Victor Eremita. 2 Deele. Første Deel indeholdende A.'s Papirer. Anden Deel, indeholdende B.'s Papirer, Breve til A. (2 Bd.).

Kjøbenhavn, C.A. Reitzel, 1843. 8vo. Two beautiful, contemporary, uniform half calf bindings with richly gilt spines. A bit of wear to extremities. inner front hinge of vol. 1 weak. Previous owner's name to front free end-papers. A bit of light brownspotting due to the paper quality (less than usual). A very nice copy indeed, thought without the frequently lacking half-titles. XX (- the half-title), (2), 470; (8, - the half-title), 368 pp.. A lovely copy, albeit without the often lacking half-titles, of the first edition of the work that founded existentialism, by the greatest Scandinavian philosopher of all times, who "is now generally considered to be, however eccentric, one of the most important Christian philosophers" (PMM 314). Kierkegaard's monumental magnum opus seminally influenced later as well as contemporary philosophy and ranks as one of the most important works of philosophy of modern times."Either-Or" is very rarely seen in nice, contemporary condition; when one does find it it contemporary bindings, it is very rarely in good condition

Plan of the Parish of Ewhurst, in the County of Sussex.

London: Published by C. Moody; W. Beck Surveyor 1843 - Partially hand coloured map, to a scale of just over 5 inches to the mile, map dimensions 73 x 57 cm, overall 81 x 62 cm, backed onto linen and varnished, showing 1,064 distinct fields and properties. A little creased, with a noticeable vertical crease, plus some wear to the edges, particularly where it was clearly once attached to rollers at the top and bottom, but generally in good sound condition. Accompanying the map is a 30 page booklet, bound in contemporary limp cloth, listing the landowners in alphabetical order and the individual fields and properties with their size and tithes payable, numbered in accordance with the map. The booklet is rolled from being kept inside the map, and has damp stains to the covers only, otherwise good. The parish includes Ewhurst Green and Staplecross as well as Ewhurst itself, and is stated at the foot of the map as being 5,803 acres in area. Scarce, with only one other example located, in the East Sussex Record Office.

Imagem da vida Christam, ordenada per dialogos como membros de sua composiçam. Nova edição. Edited by Antonio Manoel do Rego Abranches.

Lisbon, Na Typographia Rollandiana, 1843. - 2 volumes in 3 parts. 8°, contemporary tree sheep, flat spines gilt with two crimson leather lettering and numbering pieces, gilt letter and numbers, marbled endleaves, text-block edges sprinkled. A fine set. xiv pp., (1 l.), 497 pp., (1 l.); ix, (6, 1 blank), 462 pp.; (1 l.), pp. [465]-797. *** Classic work, one of the best selling Portuguese books of the sixteenth century and one of the most important books ever written in Portuguese. Bell describes the @Imagem at length: "It is impossible to read a page of these dialogues and not be struck by the extraordinary fascination of their style. It is concise and direct without ever losing its harmony. Perhaps its best testimonial is that its magic survives the innumerable quotations . The work contains much ingenious thought, charming descriptions, and elaborate similes ." (p. 237). Completed in the same year that saw the publication of the @Lusiadas, the @Imagem is the culmination of the humanistic movement in Portugal, and brilliantly combines classical learning and Renaissance erudition with the medieval Christian tradition. The first part was published originally in 1563. There were editions of 1565, 1567, 1572, and a number of others. The second part was first published in 1572; it also saw a number of subsequent editions in the sixteenth century. The work was translated into Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin at relatively early dates, and went through various editions in each of these languages. It is still reprinted from time to time in Portugal. Frei Heitor Pinto (1528?-1584?) was one of the three greatest Portuguese mystic writers of the sixteenth century - perhaps @the greatest, ranking with D. Fr. Amadaor Arraiz and Fr. Thomé de Jesus. Born in all probability at Covilhã, he professed at the Convento dos Jeronimos at Belem in 1543 and received his doctorate in theology from Siguença. Because of his proficiency in oriental languages and his knowledge of the Bible (he wrote learned commentaries on several books of the Bible), a Chair of Holy Scripture was created for him at Coimbra in 1576. A strong supporter of the Prior of Crato, Pinto was requested by King Philip to attend the Court in Madrid, was prevented from teaching, and was sent to the monastery of Silla near Toledo. Philip excluded him from the amnesty granted in 1581 and Pinto died in exile, some say poisoned on orders from the Spanish king.*** Innocêncio III, 176 (inexact and incomplete collation). See Bell, @Portuguese Literature, pp. 236-7; António Cirurgião in Machado, ed., @Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 385-6, calling this book "a obra-prima em prosa do século de ouro da literatura portuguesa." Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura portuguesa (17th ed.), pp. 425-30, @et passim. Also Maria Teresa Nascimento in @Biblos, IV, 191-5; Luiz Fernando de Carvalho Dias, "Fr. Heitor Pinto (novas achegas para a sua biografia)" in @Boletim da Biblioteca da Universidade de Coimbra, volume XXI; and Edward Glaser, "Frei Heitor Pinto's @Imagem da Vida Cristã" in @Portuguese Studies, Paris: Centro Cultural Português, 1976.         TRAVELS IN THE GREAT WESTERN PRAIRIES, THE ANAHUAC AND ROCKY MOUNTAINS, AND IN THE OREGON TERRITORY

London: Richard Bentley, 1843. Contemporary three-quarter sheep and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather label. Light wear to corners and spines, boards rubbed; some light dampstaining to binding. Ownership markings on front endpapers, some blacked out; old library ink stamps on titlepages and second leaves in each volume. Some pencil notations to text, otherwise internally clean. Good plus. The first English edition, after the first American edition of 1841. An important early account of the Oregon country. The author went overland in 1839, going to Bent's Fort and then north to the Oregon Trail. After a brief sojourn during which he gathered materials, he sailed for home via the Sandwich Islands. The book became an effective propaganda piece for boosters of American control of Oregon. Often reprinted, Howes considers this edition to be the best. WAGNER-CAMP 84. HOWES F50, "aa."         The Christmas Carol with four other Christmas Books

Chapman & Hall, London, 1843 First Edition Set, finely bound by Zaehnsdorf of London in full red morocco leather. All volumes bound in the high house style (likely early twentieth century), five band spines, all edges gilt, red silk endpapers, fine gilt inner dentels. This is a spectacular set, in which Zaehnsdorf has bound all of the books with the original cloth covers on laid paper at the rear of each volume. Leather is in wonderful condition, boards are fresh and flexible, not a single crack. All gilt title printing done with lug type (same machine, I think, as the Chelsea Bindery uses today), all gilt lettering nice and sharp (see closeups). These books have been well maintained for a very long time and have only minor wear. The spines are just a touch darker than the boards, and the gilt paper edges have minor use wear (still attractive). All five volumes have the Zaehnsdorf gilt signature at the bottom of the inside front board and a blindstamp on the back silk endpaper, which was the house mark for an exhibition quality binding. In other words, their best work. The other four titles are: The Chimes, The Haunted Man etc., The Battle of Life, The Cricket on the Hearth. In The Christmas Carol the green end papers are bound-in; 1st issue with "Stave I" printed on page [1].. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine.

Voyage au Caucase chez les Tcherkesses & les Abkhases en Colchide, en Géorgie, en Arménie et en Crimée (1843) - Reprint

Dubois de Montpéreux spent the years 1832-34 exploring the Caucasus, the Crimea and the Ukraine. This important work with its splendid plates in fact is so far-ranging in subject that it forms a sort of encyclopaedia of the Caucasus. It also includes a section on the archaeology of Georgia, as well as that of the Crimea, especially of Kertch, otherwise known as the Cimmerian Bosphorus. The antiquities of the area had attracted Russian interest from as early as 1825 and a museum was established in Kertch in 1832.The atlas is divided into 5 sections - geography, picturesque, architecture, archaeology and geology.

Salt print, unmounted, "Prayer,", 6.25 x 8.5." This photograph was included in Hill and Adamson's, "An Early Victorian Album: The Photographic Masterpieces (1843-1847) of David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson." We include the reprint from the book. Our salt print is likely trimmed and evenly faded, still very good

David Brewster taught Adamson the calotype process along with Adamson's brother John. Trained as a chemist, Adamson established a photography studio which the painter, D. O. Hill joined. Known as Hill & Adamson, the studio was in existence between 1843-47. Adamson's untimely death ended the successful partnership. In the short life of their studio, they produced close to 3000 images. Regarded as pioneers in photography, they explored the artistic elements of photography, particularly portraiture. The work of Hill and Adamson continues to be admired.

Captain Edward Belcher (1799-1877) served on, or was in command of, numerous surveys of the coasts of Northern and Western Africa, Ireland, Western America, China, Borneo, the Phillipines, and Formosa. In 1852, he commanded the expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. Belcher's account of his circumnavigation commences in February, 1837, in Panama, when he took command of the Royal Navy Ship Sulphur and, together with the RNS Starling, sailed northward to Central America, thence to the Sandwich Islands [Hawaii]. Then sailed back to North America, exploring the Vancouver Island area, then to San Francisco, and south down the coasts of California, and Central America, back to Panama. In 1838, Belcher headed back north, largely repeating the previous cruise, with more stops. Belcher then set sail across the Pacific, visiting Tahiti, Tonga, the New Hebrides, and today's Indonesia. He was then ordered to China, and took part in the naval operations there. Returned to England, via Singapore, Sumatra, Ceylon, Madagascar. Cape of Good Hope, St. Helena and Ascension.       Oahu & Honolulu: Na Na Misionari I Pai, 1843. Large, thick octavo. Contemporary ruled Hawaiian sheep. Binding rubbed, minor wear at extremities of joints. Small insect track in extreme lower edge of first eight leaves. Ink stamp of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions Library on front pastedown, verso of titlepage, and final text page. Scattered foxing and age toning. Very good, in original condition. In a half morocco box. The first joint publication of the Old and New Testaments as an entity in the Hawaiian language, printed for the American Bible Society at the Mission Presses in Oahu (Old Testament) and Honolulu (New Testament). A number of printings of various books or groups of books of the Bible were printed as early as 1827, and the first Hawaiian printing of the New Testament appeared in 1835, with the Old Testament following in 1838. These printings are frequently found bound together, although issued separately. This is the first publication of the complete approved text as an entity, paginated continuously, and issued as one book. The New Testament has its own titlepage (p.1129) and imprint. The verso of the first titlepage bears the words, "Ka lua o ke pai ana" (the second printing), referring to the only other printing of the entire Old Testament in 1838 at the same press. A second printing of the entire Bible was made later in 1843; but curiously enough, Judd, et al, record no other complete printing of the Bible in the Hawaiian language through 1899. A handsome copy of an important Hawaiian Bible, in a Hawaiian binding. JUDD 265. FORBES 1416. HUNNEWELL, pp.24-25.

        A Christmas Carol

London: Chapman & Hall. First Edition. Full Morocco. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of Dickens's classic; in beautiful early (c1900) full morocco gilt by Riviere. "In October 1843 [Dickens] had the sudden inspiration of writing a Christmas story intended to open its readers' hearts towards those struggling to survive on the lower rungs of the economic ladder and to encourage practical benevolence, but also to warn of the terrible danger to society created by the toleration of widespread ignorance and actual want among the poor. The result, written at white heat, was A Christmas Carol: in Prose, published by Chapman and Hall on 19 December as a handsomely bound little volume with four hand-coloured illustrations by John Leech, price 5s. This 'Ghost Story of Christmas', as it was subtitled, was a sensational success. The story of the archetypal miser Scrooge's conversion to benevolence by supernatural means, and the resulting preservation of the poor crippled child, Tiny Tim ('who did NOT die'), was greeted with almost universal delight (in the February 1844 number of Fraser's Thackeray called it 'a national benefit and to every man or woman who reads it a personal kindness')..." American National Biography. First state: With "Stave I", and title page printed in red and blue and dated 1843. Complete with half-title (printed in blue) and four hand-colored plates by Leech. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. Octavo, late nineteenth/early twentieth century full red morocco gilt by Riviere & Son (binder's stamp on front free endpaper), gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Faint early owner signature on half-title. Text with occasional soiling (but overall extremely clean), a hint of rubbing and minor split at joint extremities. An outstanding copy, very handsomely bound.
