Captain Edward Belcher (1799-1877) served on, or was in command of, numerous surveys of the coasts of Northern and Western Africa, Ireland, Western America, China, Borneo, the Phillipines, and Formosa. In 1852, he commanded the expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. Belcher's account of his circumnavigation commences in February, 1837, in Panama, when he took command of the Royal Navy Ship Sulphur and, together with the RNS Starling, sailed northward to Central America, thence to the Sandwich Islands [Hawaii]. Then sailed back to North America, exploring the Vancouver Island area, then to San Francisco, and south down the coasts of California, and Central America, back to Panama. In 1838, Belcher headed back north, largely repeating the previous cruise, with more stops. Belcher then set sail across the Pacific, visiting Tahiti, Tonga, the New Hebrides, and today's Indonesia. He was then ordered to China, and took part in the naval operations there. Returned to England, via Singapore, Sumatra, Ceylon, Madagascar. Cape of Good Hope, St. Helena and Ascension.         KA PALAPALA HEMOLELE A IEHOVA KO KAKOU AKUA O KE KAUOHA KAHIKO A ME KE KAUOHA HOU I UNUHIIA MAILOKO MAI O NA OLELO KAHIKO

Oahu & Honolulu: Na Na Misionari I Pai, 1843. Large, thick octavo. Contemporary ruled Hawaiian sheep. Binding rubbed, minor wear at extremities of joints. Small insect track in extreme lower edge of first eight leaves. Ink stamp of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions Library on front pastedown, verso of titlepage, and final text page. Scattered foxing and age toning. Very good, in original condition. In a half morocco box. The first joint publication of the Old and New Testaments as an entity in the Hawaiian language, printed for the American Bible Society at the Mission Presses in Oahu (Old Testament) and Honolulu (New Testament). A number of printings of various books or groups of books of the Bible were printed as early as 1827, and the first Hawaiian printing of the New Testament appeared in 1835, with the Old Testament following in 1838. These printings are frequently found bound together, although issued separately. This is the first publication of the complete approved text as an entity, paginated continuously, and issued as one book. The New Testament has its own titlepage (p.1129) and imprint. The verso of the first titlepage bears the words, "Ka lua o ke pai ana" (the second printing), referring to the only other printing of the entire Old Testament in 1838 at the same press. A second printing of the entire Bible was made later in 1843; but curiously enough, Judd, et al, record no other complete printing of the Bible in the Hawaiian language through 1899. A handsome copy of an important Hawaiian Bible, in a Hawaiian binding. JUDD 265. FORBES 1416. HUNNEWELL, pp.24-25.

        A Christmas Carol

London: Chapman & Hall. First Edition. Full Morocco. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of Dickens's classic; in beautiful early (c1900) full morocco gilt by Riviere. "In October 1843 [Dickens] had the sudden inspiration of writing a Christmas story intended to open its readers' hearts towards those struggling to survive on the lower rungs of the economic ladder and to encourage practical benevolence, but also to warn of the terrible danger to society created by the toleration of widespread ignorance and actual want among the poor. The result, written at white heat, was A Christmas Carol: in Prose, published by Chapman and Hall on 19 December as a handsomely bound little volume with four hand-coloured illustrations by John Leech, price 5s. This 'Ghost Story of Christmas', as it was subtitled, was a sensational success. The story of the archetypal miser Scrooge's conversion to benevolence by supernatural means, and the resulting preservation of the poor crippled child, Tiny Tim ('who did NOT die'), was greeted with almost universal delight (in the February 1844 number of Fraser's Thackeray called it 'a national benefit and to every man or woman who reads it a personal kindness')..." American National Biography. First state: With "Stave I", and title page printed in red and blue and dated 1843. Complete with half-title (printed in blue) and four hand-colored plates by Leech. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. Octavo, late nineteenth/early twentieth century full red morocco gilt by Riviere & Son (binder's stamp on front free endpaper), gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Faint early owner signature on half-title. Text with occasional soiling (but overall extremely clean), a hint of rubbing and minor split at joint extremities. An outstanding copy, very handsomely bound.

[NATURAL HISTORY OF NEW YORK. PART III, MINERALOGY, AND PART IV, GEOLOGY]

Albany, 1843. Later brown cloth, matching leather labels. Very good. The New York Natural History and Geological Survey was one of the most ambitious scientific projects of the antebellum United States. Begun in 1836, the Survey published the NATURAL HISTORY OF NEW YORK in thirty volumes between 1842 and 1894, in six sections: Zoology (five volumes), Botany (two volumes), Mineralogy (one volume), Geology (four volumes), Agriculture (five volumes), and Paleontology (thirteen volumes). The present set comprises the entire Mineralogy and Geology sections, uniformly bound. The mineralogy section was compiled by Lewis C. Beck, and describes all minerals found in the state. The ambitious geology survey was divided into four volumes, arranged geographically, covering the state from east to west. Each section had a different editor, and respective volumes were under the direction of William W. Mather, Ebenezer Emmons, Lardner Vanuxem, and James Hall. Numerous plates and illustrations adorned the volumes, most notably forty-two folding handcolored lithographed plates in Mather's volume. At the time of publication, these were the most extensive geological surveys published in the United States, and they served as models for the great United States surveys, such as the Railroad Surveys, in the next decade.

History of the Priesthood from the Beginning of the World to the Present Time, Written in Defense of the Doctrine and Position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and also a brief treatise upon the fundamental sentiments, particularly those which distinguish the above society from others now extant

Philadelphia: Brown, Bicking & Guilbert, Printers, 1843. First edition. Leather bound. 168pp. Vegisemo-Quarto (24mo) [14 cm] Original 3/4 calf over marbled boards with bands and 'The Priesthood' gilt stamped on backstrip. Marbled boards and corners rubbed. Name in ink on the front pastedown. Tape repair to final leaf of text. A nice copy of this scarce work in original binding. According to Crawley: "History of the Priesthood marks another step in Mormon apologetics...The first three chapters discuss the concept of priesthood, its possession by Adam and Abraham, God's Covenant with Abraham, and the history of the priesthood to Jethro and Moses. The next three chapters examine what Winchester claims was the apostate condition of the Jews at the time of Christ...The final chapter, reworked from his articles in the Gospel Reflector outlines the history and contents of the Book of Mormon. Benjamin Winchester was an early leader in the LDS Church. "[Benjamin Winchester] moved to Kirtland in the fall of 1833, and joined Zion's Camp (Winchester was the youngest adult member) in 1834 and marched to Missouri. He returned to Kirtland, filled a mission in 1837, with Jedediah M. Grant and others as companions, filled other missions later and baptized over eight hundred persons. He raised up a branch of five hundred members in Philadelphia" - Andrew Jenson, Biographical Encyclopedia (Vol. 4 - Pg. 682). This is an early and seminal LDS work that is rarely offered for sale. This volume was produced during the LDS church's early years in the Midwest, and it shows the foundations for some aspects of Mormon theology (the Priesthood of the Old Testament and God's Covenant with Abraham to name two).         Leopold Auenbrugger‘s ... Neue Erfindung mittelst des Anschlagens an den Brustkorb, als eines Zeichens, verborgene Brust-Krankheiten zu entdecken. Im lateinischen Original herausgegeben, übersetzt und mit Anmerkungen versehen von Dr. S. Ungar. Begleitet mit einem Vorworte von Joseph Skoda, Doctor der Medicin, Primararzt am k.k. allgem. Krankenhause zu Wien, &c. &c.

Wien, J.B. Wallishausser, 1843. 8°, OBr., unbeschnitten, in mod. - NORMAN 86; HIRSCH/H. I, 225 Versand D: 5,00 EUR alte Medizin

Manuscript, "Idiotismes Francais et Proverbes proprement dits, recueillis, definis et mis dans un noucel ordre"

early 19th century, France - Period half sheep and marbled paper; 4to (197 x 254 mm); pp. 70, handwritten in black ink on the rectos only, in a tidy, tiny script. Backstrip chipped, with gatherings exposed (but everything holding just fine); boards a bit scuffed. An extensive compilation, in two parts, of French idioms and proverbs -- listed in alphabetical order, and with explanations. The preface suggests joint authorship, but Joachim-Simeon Lucet (the London-based author of "Langue Francaise," 1843) undoubtedly had some hand in the creation of this interesting, rigorous, and frequently amusing manuscript.         [MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY JOHN P. SARPY, TESTIFYING TO THE DISPERSAL OF THE ESTATE OF HENRY FRAEB AND THE DIFFICULTY OF COLLECTING MONEY FROM FAMED MOUNTAIN MAN JIM BRIDGER]

St. Louis, 1843. Folio. Old fold lines; some separation at folds, a few repaired with older archival tape. Quite clean and bright. Good. A remarkable window into the business dealings of famed mountain man Jim Bridger, this signed manuscript affidavit of John P. Sarpy testifies to his actions on behalf of the estate of fellow fur trader Henry Fraeb, who was killed by Indians in the Rocky Mountains. Sarpy, who was a partner in the major firm of Pierre Chouteau & Co., had worked closely with Fraeb and knew him well. In his affidavit he writes about the Chouteau Company's concerns about Jim Bridger, Fraeb's partner at the time of his demise, and the difficulty of getting Bridger to pay his debts. Dated at St. Louis, Sarpy's affidavit states: "...on the 8th day of August last he was appointed...administrator of the estate of Henry Fraeb then lately deceased. Said Fraeb had been a trader in the mountains, & was at the time of his death in partnership with a man of the name of James Bridger, & said Bridger & Fraeb were indebted to the firm of Pierre Chouteau Jr. & Co., & it was feared by the members of said firm that unless some one became the administrator of the said Fraeb, the said Bridger might interpose difficulties in the settlement of the accounts existing between them & Bridger & Fraeb. & for the purpose of doing justice to themselves, as well as to the said Fraeb, the said Sarpy applied for letters of administration, which were granted to him as above mentioned. The said Bridger has however since this time been here & has settled in full the accounts existing between the firm of Pierre Chouteau Jr. & Co. & the said Bridger & Fraeb. And the said Sarpy says that no property has come into his hands as the administrator of the said Fraeb, although it may be that the said Fraeb has property in the [mountain?] country or in the hands of James Bridger his former partner." Though he may have been one of the greatest and most beloved mountain men of all time, Jim Bridger was not the best debt in the world, nor did Pierre Chouteau & Co. forget business.

A HOLOGRAPHIC LETTER BY J.B. STAPLES, ATTORNEY FOR JABEZ B. CROOK, 1843.

New York, 1843. A holographic letter, sheet size opens to be. 40 x 25.4 cm., folds down to be 13 x 7 cm., very good, wax. seal [torn to open the letter], single page of text 20 x 25.. 4 cm., very good, written in a bold hand Dated Dec. 9, 1843.. This is a fascinating and superb piece of diplomatic history vis-à-vis the first American commercial trade treaty with China, thus stabilizing trade with China and America. This item concerns the gift to China of a working steam train model. * The letter is addressed to Gilbert Thompson, Chief Engineer of the U.S. Navy, Washington City, D.C. Forwarding a $60 claim for the model of a Steam Train Engine, made by Jabez B. Crook "to your order last summer, to be taken to China." * WHO WAS JABEZ B. CROOK: Crook was a very skilled machinist, and he produced a model Steam Train of such high quality that it was intended as a diplomatic gift to the Emperor of China, to open commercial trade with America. Crook was later known for his superb quality bamboo fishing rods and was a pioneer for his hand-crafted fishing reels. . With the new appointment of Caleb Cushing to be the Honorable U.S. ENVOY EXTRAORDIANARY TO CHINA [and former Massachusetts Congressman] Cushing wanted to impress the Chinese with America's new and technological marvels such as the telegraph, new daguerreotype photography and a model steam train engine. To that end, Cushing enlisted John R. Peters, Jr., a brilliant young engineer to accompany his diplomatic mission to China in order to "exhibit the finest fruits of American mechanical ingenuity before the Chinese." It was most likely that Peters commissioned Crook to sell the U.S. Government this steam train placing the order through Thomson, a lawyer who was the Navy's "Chief Engineer" because his father, a Justice of the Supreme court had once been a Secretary of the Navy. More research is needed about the model train and its voyage and delivery to the Chinese. * THE STEAM TRAIN: A fascinating association in that a similar if not identical steam train, telegraph and other American marvels were delivered to the Japanese in 1854 as gifts to the Japanese, all of which is well documented in the Commodore Perry Expedition. We are still researching to confirm this is the exact one made by Crook. The fact remains that a steam train was given as one of many gifts to the Japanese, and for sure, Caleb Cushing was also involved with these gifts to Japan with the opening of trade with Commodore Perry just a few years after the opening of China. See Pineau below. * Although Cushing did petition to have audience with the Emperor of China, after his arrival to Canton, this was denied, instead met with the Governor of Guandong & Guangxi who was the highest Chinese official he could muster, and said to be the emissary of the Emperor of China. The Treaty of Wanghia was signed on July 3, 1844, at Kun Iam Temple, a village in north Macau. * CONDITION: The letter is in excellent condition, with a very faint and small stain on the recto, and another on the verso which does not affect any text. There are two black stamps from "BARNUM'S CITI HOTEL, MONUMENT SQUARE BALTIMORE" on the verso, along with the addressee's address "Gilbert Thompson Esq, Chief Engineer of Navy, Washington City. D.C." Folded and red seal wax sealed, a minor bit of paper was torn [naturally] when this letter was opened. The remains of the seal closure on opposite side. No envelope as was standard for the times, but having an integral envelope, by folding and wax sealing the paper. Nice condition boldly written in wide pen. Signed by J.G. Staples the lawyer. * REFERENCES: * The Treaty of Wanghia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Wanghia * [PINEAU, Roger.]: THE JAPAN EXPEDITION 1852-1855 OF COMMODORE MATTHEW CALBRAITH PERRY: see pages 173-174 last paragraph: "We have established a magnetic telegraph....we have laid down the entire railroad track sent from the United States, and put the steam engine, tender, and car in excellent practical operation, carrying round the circle many of the astonished natives. We have exhibited and explained the use of numerous useful inventions of our country...." And on p. 176-177: AMERICAN GIFTS. "...First assistant engineer Danby with the requisite number of mechanics, was employed in unpacking and putting in working order the locomotive engine, whilst Messrs. Draper and Williams were equally busy in preparing the erect the telegraphic posts for the extension of the magnetic lines [for the telegraph]." * RE: Crook: Crook's fishing tackle: http://fishinghistory.blogspot.com/2009/01/thursday-review-o rcas-reel-news-january.html *** Color scans can be sent by email. Second edition, originally published in 1842, but with a new Introductory Letter (dated 1843); both editions are rare, this one recorded by Copac in only two British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Cambridge), and OCLC locates just one (Peabody Essex Museum). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed at the head of title page: "The Revd. Dr Jarvis, with the author's respects". "Juggernaut" was the British word for the enormous Hindu temple car used at the Jagannath Temple at Puri. The East India Company extracted a toll from visitors to the shrine and there was uproar in some quarters in Britain about what was considered a levy on "idolatry". Lord Auckland oversaw the abolition of the practice in 1839. Strachan mentions in his Introductory Letter that publication of this revised edition had been suspended because of the "disastrous intelligence from Affghanistan [sic]", a reference to the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). This is Kierkegaard's first major philosophical work propounding the theory of choice and existence; only 525 copies of this edition were published in 1843 at Kierkegaard's own expense. As a thinker, Kierkegaard had to wait for the twentieth century to find his audience; he is now generally considered to be, however eccentric, one of the most important Christian philosophers." (Printing and the Mind of Man, # 314.) Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. Kierkegaard's magnum opus Either/Or was published 20 February 1843; it was mostly written during Kierkegaard's stay in Berlin, where he took notes on Schelling's Philosophy of Revelation. Either/Or includes essays of literary and music criticism and a set of romantic-like-aphorisms, as part of his larger theme of examining the reflective and philosophical structure of faith. Edited by "Victor Eremita", the book contained the papers of an unknown "A" and "B" which the pseudonymous author claimed to have discovered in a secret drawer of his secretary. Eremita had a hard time putting the papers of "A" in order because they were not straightforward. "B"'s papers were arranged in an orderly fashion. Both of these characters are trying to become religious individuals. Each approached the idea of first love from an esthetic and an ethical point of view. The book is basically an argument about faith and marriage with a short discourse at the end telling them they should stop arguing. Eremita thinks "B", a judge, makes the most sense. Kierkegaard stressed the "how" of Christianity as well as the "how" of book reading in his works rather than the "what" WikipediaThis collection is on consignment with LDRB.
