        Juggernaut: It's Present State,

London: Hatchard and Son,, 1843. under British Patronage & Support, as settled by Lord Auckland. With an Introductory Letter to Lord Fitzgerald and Vesci. Octavo. Stitched as issued. A touch of foxing to title page, light signs of handling to back cover. An excellent copy. Second edition, originally published in 1842, but with a new Introductory Letter (dated 1843); both editions are rare, this one recorded by Copac in only two British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Cambridge), and OCLC locates just one (Peabody Essex Museum). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed at the head of title page: "The Revd. Dr Jarvis, with the author's respects". "Juggernaut" was the British word for the enormous Hindu temple car used at the Jagannath Temple at Puri. The East India Company extracted a toll from visitors to the shrine and there was uproar in some quarters in Britain about what was considered a levy on "idolatry". Lord Auckland oversaw the abolition of the practice in 1839. Strachan mentions in his Introductory Letter that publication of this revised edition had been suspended because of the "disastrous intelligence from Affghanistan [sic]", a reference to the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42).

        Eigenh. Albumblatt.

      O. O., [1843]. - 1 S. 8vo. All Five Christmas Books: A CHRISTMAS CAROL; THE CHIMES; THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH; THE BATTLE OF LIFE; and THE HAUNTED MAN AND THE GHOST'S BARGAIN

1843. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843; C&H 1845[1844]; Bradbury & Evans 1846[1845]; B&E 1846; B&E 1848. [Together, five volumes.] Original red cloth (rose-brown cloth for the first title) decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt. First Editions of all five of Charles Dickens's Christmas books -- four of them issued in consecutive Decembers (the second and third post-dated), and the fifth two years later.~A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a copy of the first issue, with the "Stave I" chapter heading and with all 38 of the other first-issue points enumerated by Smith. The title page is in blue and red, and the endpapers are chalky green. Condition is bright and near-fine (binding a little askew, a tiny trace of wear at the spine ends, but otherwise remarkably free of wear or soil, gilt bright, the original endpapers firm and uncracked).~THE CHIMES has the vignette title page in the first and less-common state, with "Chapman & Hall" printed within the vignette itself. Condition is unusually bright, fine except for slightly cracked endpapers.~THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH has the ad leaf in the second state, beginning "New Edition of Oliver Twist...". As with the preceding volume, it is a bright copy, fine except for some cracking of the endpapers.~THE BATTLE OF LIFE has the vignette title page in the second state of four, without an angel holding the banner (about 90% of copies are in the fourth state, and the first and third are almost unheard-of). It is a fine, bright copy.~THE HAUNTED MAN is the only one of the five not to have issue points. It too is a bright copy, fine except for very slight darkening of the spine and the presence of a large generic bookplate.~The strength of the group is in their condition. The five books are housed in a morocco-backed slipcase, each in a separate chemise. Smith II, 4-5-6-8-9. Provenance: most of the volumes bear the small leather bookplate of Herbert L. Carlebach (1890-?), who donated some of his library to Harvard.

CONVENTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE MEXICAN REPUBLIC, CONCLUDED JANUARY 30, 1843

[Washington], 1843. Folio. Gathered signatures, string-tied. Some wear on old folds and chips at foredge. A few pencil margin notes. Withal, still very good. The official, folio, printing of this treaty. Such printings were done in small numbers. This treaty called for arbitration in the outstanding Mexican and U.S. claims. According to Bancroft, "The treaty of arbitration was a thorn in the flesh of many who had cast an evil eye on Mexico, as it did away with all pretexts for complaint against the latter Republic, and postponed indefinitely the acquisition of Texas." Not for long, as it turned out. This was the sixth, and last, Mexican treaty with the U.S. before war came after the annexation of Texas. OCLC locates only a single copy, at The New York Public Library. Not in Streeter TEXAS. Very rare. MALLOY, p.1103. OCLC 41010415.

A FINE AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM CHARLES DARWIN TO HIS PUBLISHER

Bromley, Kent dated by Darwin June 29 postmarked July 1, 1843 - Letter in manuscript, folded and addressed to Mr. Smith (George Murray Smith) of Smith & Elder at No. 65 Cornhill, London (His publisher at the time). Stamped and postmarked. Single sheet, approximately 18 x 23 cm, now handsomely presented with a photograph of Darwin in a fine 42 x 50 cm frame, glazed. A fine letter, beautifully preserved. A HANDSOMELY PRESERVED VERY EARLY AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM CHARLES DARWIN, THE FATHER OF EVOLUTIONARY THEORY. The letter is sent from Down House, at the time, Darwin's new home. He would live there the remainder of his life. Professionally this was the time in his career when Darwin was expanding his 1842 "pencil sketch" of his theory of natural selection into the 230-page 1844 "Essay", to be expanded with his research results if he died prematurely. He was seriously engaged at the time on his work and writing related to the voyage taken on the 'Beagle'. In the letter, Darwin inquires of his publisher about having papers sent to a professor in Massachusetts in the United States. The professor in Massachusetts is most likely Harvard University Professor of Botany Asa Gray, considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century. The two had met in 1839, apparently introduced by Joseph Dalton Hooker. Both Darwin and Gray had a similar empirical approach to life sciences and had a relationship and a continuum of correspondence that lasted for decades. Gray published the collection of essays which he named DARWINIANA. The articles defended the theory of evolution from the standpoint of botany and sought reconciliation with theology by arguing theistic evolution, that natural selection is not inconsistent with Natural Theology. Concerning his work and the papers probably sent to Professor Gray, ‘Darwin’s first published book is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to ‘On the Origin of Species’ as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed.(Freeman). ‘The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin’s intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal scientific training. He returned a hard-headed man of science, knowing the importance of evidence, almost convinced that species had not always been as they were since the creation but had undergone change. The experiences of his five years.and what they led to, built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought’ (DSB) Of the great exploratory voyages, ‘a most important place is taken by the voyage of the ‘Beagle’ in 1831-1834.Darwin’s name is so associated with the evolutionary idea through which he profoundly influenced scientific, philosophical, political, religious, and ethical thought, that certain of his other claims are often forgotten. To appreciate his distinction, it is necessary to recall that, had he never written on evolution, he would still stand in the front rank among naturalists, and would have to be included in any history of science. Thus even during the voyage in the ‘Beagle’ he reached conclusions that modified and extended the fundamental working principles of geology and geophysics. In Darwin’s record of experience in the ‘Beagle’ in the famous ‘Journal of Researches’ (1839) a special interest attaches to his observations on the highly peculiar animals and plants connected with oceanic islands. The Galapagos and St. Helena are good examples. Their extraordinary wealth of peculiar forms and the difference of these from those of the nearest neighbouring land---either continental or insular---are among the most striking phenomena in the distribution of living things. They, more perhaps than any other, suggested to Darwin his solution of the problem of the origin of species.’ (Singer)

Squibb was a southern seedsman and nursery grower. The first edition of this work was the second gardening book published in America; both the first and second editions are practically unprocurable. This fourth edition is not listed in De Renne or Hedrick, nor is it in Owen. OCLC lists three copies, at the University of Alabama, the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and Dumbarton Oaks. Scarce and interesting. SABIN 89948 (note). ELLISON 478. OCLC 28989599.

Previous owner's name to front free end-papers. A bit of light brownspotting due to the paper quality (less than usual). A very nice copy indeed, thought without the frequently lacking half-titles. XX (- the half-title), (2), 470; (8, - the half-title), 368 pp.. A lovely copy, albeit without the often lacking half-titles, of the first edition of the work that founded existentialism, by the greatest Scandinavian philosopher of all times, who "is now generally considered to be, however eccentric, one of the most important Christian philosophers" (PMM 314). Kierkegaard's monumental magnum opus seminally influenced later as well as contemporary philosophy and ranks as one of the most important works of philosophy of modern times."Either-Or" is very rarely seen in nice, contemporary condition; when one does find it it contemporary bindings, it is very rarely in good condition

Plan of the Parish of Ewhurst, in the County of Sussex.

London: Published by C. Moody; W. Beck Surveyor 1843 - Partially hand coloured map, to a scale of just over 5 inches to the mile, map dimensions 73 x 57 cm, overall 81 x 62 cm, backed onto linen and varnished, showing 1,064 distinct fields and properties. A little creased, with a noticeable vertical crease, plus some wear to the edges, particularly where it was clearly once attached to rollers at the top and bottom, but generally in good sound condition. Accompanying the map is a 30 page booklet, bound in contemporary limp cloth, listing the landowners in alphabetical order and the individual fields and properties with their size and tithes payable, numbered in accordance with the map. The booklet is rolled from being kept inside the map, and has damp stains to the covers only, otherwise good. The parish includes Ewhurst Green and Staplecross as well as Ewhurst itself, and is stated at the foot of the map as being 5,803 acres in area. Scarce, with only one other example located, in the East Sussex Record Office.

Imagem da vida Christam, ordenada per dialogos como membros de sua composiçam. Nova edição. Edited by Antonio Manoel do Rego Abranches.

Lisbon, Na Typographia Rollandiana, 1843. - 2 volumes in 3 parts. 8°, contemporary tree sheep, flat spines gilt with two crimson leather lettering and numbering pieces, gilt letter and numbers, marbled endleaves, text-block edges sprinkled. A fine set. xiv pp., (1 l.), 497 pp., (1 l.); ix, (6, 1 blank), 462 pp.; (1 l.), pp. [465]-797. *** Classic work, one of the best selling Portuguese books of the sixteenth century and one of the most important books ever written in Portuguese. Bell describes the @Imagem at length: "It is impossible to read a page of these dialogues and not be struck by the extraordinary fascination of their style. It is concise and direct without ever losing its harmony. Perhaps its best testimonial is that its magic survives the innumerable quotations . The work contains much ingenious thought, charming descriptions, and elaborate similes ." (p. 237). Completed in the same year that saw the publication of the @Lusiadas, the @Imagem is the culmination of the humanistic movement in Portugal, and brilliantly combines classical learning and Renaissance erudition with the medieval Christian tradition. The first part was published originally in 1563. There were editions of 1565, 1567, 1572, and a number of others. The second part was first published in 1572; it also saw a number of subsequent editions in the sixteenth century. The work was translated into Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin at relatively early dates, and went through various editions in each of these languages. It is still reprinted from time to time in Portugal. Frei Heitor Pinto (1528?-1584?) was one of the three greatest Portuguese mystic writers of the sixteenth century - perhaps @the greatest, ranking with D. Fr. Amadaor Arraiz and Fr. Thomé de Jesus. Born in all probability at Covilhã, he professed at the Convento dos Jeronimos at Belem in 1543 and received his doctorate in theology from Siguença. Because of his proficiency in oriental languages and his knowledge of the Bible (he wrote learned commentaries on several books of the Bible), a Chair of Holy Scripture was created for him at Coimbra in 1576. A strong supporter of the Prior of Crato, Pinto was requested by King Philip to attend the Court in Madrid, was prevented from teaching, and was sent to the monastery of Silla near Toledo. Philip excluded him from the amnesty granted in 1581 and Pinto died in exile, some say poisoned on orders from the Spanish king.*** Innocêncio III, 176 (inexact and incomplete collation). See Bell, @Portuguese Literature, pp. 236-7; António Cirurgião in Machado, ed., @Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 385-6, calling this book "a obra-prima em prosa do século de ouro da literatura portuguesa." Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura portuguesa (17th ed.), pp. 425-30, @et passim. Also Maria Teresa Nascimento in @Biblos, IV, 191-5; Luiz Fernando de Carvalho Dias, "Fr. Heitor Pinto (novas achegas para a sua biografia)" in @Boletim da Biblioteca da Universidade de Coimbra, volume XXI; and Edward Glaser, "Frei Heitor Pinto's @Imagem da Vida Cristã" in @Portuguese Studies, Paris: Centro Cultural Português, 1976.         TRAVELS IN THE GREAT WESTERN PRAIRIES, THE ANAHUAC AND ROCKY MOUNTAINS, AND IN THE OREGON TERRITORY

London: Richard Bentley, 1843. Contemporary three-quarter sheep and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather label. Light wear to corners and spines, boards rubbed; some light dampstaining to binding. Ownership markings on front endpapers, some blacked out; old library ink stamps on titlepages and second leaves in each volume. Some pencil notations to text, otherwise internally clean. Good plus. The first English edition, after the first American edition of 1841. An important early account of the Oregon country. The author went overland in 1839, going to Bent's Fort and then north to the Oregon Trail. After a brief sojourn during which he gathered materials, he sailed for home via the Sandwich Islands. The book became an effective propaganda piece for boosters of American control of Oregon. Often reprinted, Howes considers this edition to be the best. WAGNER-CAMP 84. HOWES F50, "aa."         The Christmas Carol with four other Christmas Books

Chapman & Hall, London, 1843 First Edition Set, finely bound by Zaehnsdorf of London in full red morocco leather. All volumes bound in the high house style (likely early twentieth century), five band spines, all edges gilt, red silk endpapers, fine gilt inner dentels. This is a spectacular set, in which Zaehnsdorf has bound all of the books with the original cloth covers on laid paper at the rear of each volume. Leather is in wonderful condition, boards are fresh and flexible, not a single crack. All gilt title printing done with lug type (same machine, I think, as the Chelsea Bindery uses today), all gilt lettering nice and sharp (see closeups). These books have been well maintained for a very long time and have only minor wear. The spines are just a touch darker than the boards, and the gilt paper edges have minor use wear (still attractive). All five volumes have the Zaehnsdorf gilt signature at the bottom of the inside front board and a blindstamp on the back silk endpaper, which was the house mark for an exhibition quality binding. In other words, their best work. The other four titles are: The Chimes, The Haunted Man etc., The Battle of Life, The Cricket on the Hearth. In The Christmas Carol the green end papers are bound-in; 1st issue with "Stave I" printed on page [1].. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine.
