First collected edition. Scarce. Dubbed ?the Corneille of the Boulevards';, Pixérécourt was practically the inventor, and certainly the codifier, of the popular French stage form mélodrame. Noted for its stock characters, complex plots, sensationalism, startling coups de théâtre, scenic virtuosity and a strongly moral outlook, the mélodrame flourished in the early decades of the 19th century. Pixérécourt built a catalogue of nearly 60 such plays, beginning in 1798 with Victor, ou L';enfant de la forêt (originally intended as an opéra comique), developing an international reputation. He also wrote comedies, tragedies, vaudevilles, féeries, pantomimes and the librettos of some 21 opéras comiques. He certainly was not ignorant of the dramatic potential of music, for he worked a great deal of it into his melodramas. His most frequent collaborators in that genre were Louis Alexandre Piccinni and Adrien Quaisain. In both dramas and librettos he saw himself as a successor of Sedaine. Though Pixérécourt';s melodramas are best known for the influence they exercised on Romantic drama, they were no less influential on the genre that came to be known as French grand opera."         A FINE AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM CHARLES DARWIN TO HIS PUBLISHER

Bromley, Kent: dated by Darwin June 29, postmarked July 1, 1843. Letter in manuscript, folded and addressed to Mr. Smith (George Murray Smith) of Smith & Elder at No. 65 Cornhill, London (His publisher at the time). Stamped and postmarked. Single sheet, approximately 18 x 23 cm, now handsomely presented with a photograph of Darwin in a fine 42 x 50 cm frame, glazed. A fine letter, beautifully preserved. A HANDSOMELY PRESERVED VERY EARLY AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM CHARLES DARWIN, THE FATHER OF EVOLUTIONARY THEORY. The letter is sent from Down House, at the time, Darwin's new home. He would live there the remainder of his life. Professionally this was the time in his career when Darwin was expanding his 1842 "pencil sketch" of his theory of natural selection into the 230-page 1844 "Essay", to be expanded with his research results if he died prematurely. He was seriously engaged at the time on his work and writing related to the voyage taken on the 'Beagle'. In the letter, Darwin inquires of his publisher about having papers sent to a professor in Massachusetts in the United States. The professor in Massachusetts is most likely Harvard University Professor of Botany Asa Gray, considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century. The two had met in 1839, apparently introduced by Joseph Dalton Hooker. Both Darwin and Gray had a similar empirical approach to life sciences and had a relationship and a continuum of correspondence that lasted for decades. Gray published the collection of essays which he named DARWINIANA. The articles defended the theory of evolution from the standpoint of botany and sought reconciliation with theology by arguing theistic evolution, that natural selection is not inconsistent with Natural Theology. Concerning his work and the papers probably sent to Professor Gray, ‘Darwin’s first published book is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to ‘On the Origin of Species’ as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed....(Freeman). ‘The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin’s intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal scientific training. He returned a hard-headed man of science, knowing the importance of evidence, almost convinced that species had not always been as they were since the creation but had undergone change... The experiences of his five years...and what they led to, built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought’ (DSB) Of the great exploratory voyages, ‘a most important place is taken by the voyage of the ‘Beagle’ in 1831-1834....Darwin’s name is so associated with the evolutionary idea through which he profoundly influenced scientific, philosophical, political, religious, and ethical thought, that certain of his other claims are often forgotten. To appreciate his distinction, it is necessary to recall that, had he never written on evolution, he would still stand in the front rank among naturalists, and would have to be included in any history of science. Thus even during the voyage in the ‘Beagle’ he reached conclusions that modified and extended the fundamental working principles of geology and geophysics. In Darwin’s record of experience in the ‘Beagle’ in the famous ‘Journal of Researches’ (1839) a special interest attaches to his observations on the highly peculiar animals and plants connected with oceanic islands. The Galapagos and St. Helena are good examples. Their extraordinary wealth of peculiar forms and the difference of these from those of the nearest neighbouring land---either continental or insular---are among the most striking phenomena in the distribution of living things. They, more perhaps than any other, suggested to Darwin his solution of the problem of the origin of species.’ (Singer)

Wien, 1843-1859. Zus. 2 S., 8° u. 4°. An den österr. Chemiker u. - Knickspuren. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Ettingshausen, Schrötter, Physik, Mathematik, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

Autograph note signed in full ("Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy) relative to the composer's incidental music to Sophocles' Antigone

      - 1 page. Oblong octavo (173 x 81 mm.), cut from a larger sheet. Dated Leipzig, July 14, 1843. Written in brown ink in German cursive with proper names in Latin script. In German (with translation). Relative to the engraving of the score and parts of Antigone . "I request Director Ringelhardt to have the score and parts of my music to Antigone given to Mr. Kistner for engraving." Written during Mendelssohn's residency in Berlin, during which time he retained close ties to Leipzig and continued conducting at the Gewandhaus. He composed the incidental music to Sophocles' Antigone in 1842-1843, and Ewer in London published the first edition of the piano-vocal score in 1843; Kistner's edition did not appear until 1951. "The composer began work in 1841 on music for the choruses of Antigone. His own classical studies held him in good stead: using the translation of J.J.C. Donner, scrupulously faithful to the original metre, Mendelssohn rendered the strophes and antistrophes of Sophocles' choruses with syllabic settings for double male choir accompanied by an orchestra, occasionally resorting to a recitative-like style of declamation. The parts of the principal characters were left as spoken dialogue, or set as melodrama, with the orchestra accompanying the spoken text. Though opinion varied about Mendelssohn's music (Schumann viewed the score as ?half opera, half tragedy';; The Times, ?too modern, and at the same time not modern enough';), Antigone was widely performed and used as a model for later classical revivals. In 1845 alone, it achieved 45 performances at Covent Garden; the same year, it was satirized in Lortzing's comic opera Der Wildschütz, another sign of its popularity." R. Larry Todd in Grove onlineFriedrich Sebald Ringelhardt (1785-1855) was the director of the municipal theatre in Leipzig from 1832 to 1845; Carl Friedrich Kistner (1797-1844) was Mendelssohn's publisher in Leipzig.

Autograph letter signed "Meyerbeer" to unidentified correspondent [?Julius Stern]

      - 1 page. Small folio (122 x 210 mm.), cut from a larger leaf). [?Paris], "Sunday morning," [?1843-44]. In black ink on personal letterhead with embossed monogram at head. In German (with translation).Meyerbeer invites his unidentified correspondent, addressed "Geehrter Herr und Landsmann" (Esteemed Sir and Countryman), to a concert by Hector Berlioz:"Herr Berlioz has been so kind to send me two tickets for his concert tonight. If you agree to share his gift with me, I will be even happier because I will also have the pleasure of being your neighbor. After the concert I want to introduce you to Berlioz if you have not already met him." Slightly worn; creased at folds and overall; several very small ink stains; left margin with small chip, trimmed with partial loss to monogram; "Meyerbeer" in another hand to blank verso. Apparently unpublished. Not in Becker, Heinz, Gudrun Becker, and Sabine Henze-Döhring, eds.: Giacomo Meyerbeer: Briefwechsel und Tagebücher. The unusual greeting "Geehrter Herr und Landsmann" and the content of the letter suggest that Meyerbeer's correspondent is, in all likelihood, Julius Stern (1820-83), who in 1850 founded the Stern'sches Konservatorium in Berlin. With a grant from the king of Prussia, Stern spent the academic year 1843-44 as a voice student in Paris, where Meyerbeer protected him and introduced him to Berlioz. Meyerbeer uses the same greeting in a (likewise undated) letter to Stern that Stern's son and biographer Richard Stern published in his memoirs of his father: "Stern became closely acquainted with Hector Berlioz as well. Meyerbeer sent him a ticket for a concert by Berlioz and personally accompanied him there [as confirmed in the present letter]. Meyerbeer had the first box and left the best seat to Stern. Soon after, Stern sent some of his compositions to Berlioz, who had asked for them. Not much later, Meyerbeer wrote to Stern: 'Geehrter Herr und Landsmann! You may see your wish of a closer acquaintance with Berlioz fulfilled today if you please join me for lunch at the Hôtel du Paris.' " Richard Stern, Erinnerungsblätter an Julius Stern, p. 50. If Stern is, indeed, Meyerbeer's correspondent, the present letter may be safely dated to 1843-44. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:6013) First edition. In 1836, fans of Cafe de la Regence at the French Place du Théâtre in Paris, and friends of Louis Charles Mahe De La Bourdonnais, decided to create a magazine, named Le Palamède, which would show the beauty on the game of chess. The French, recognized as the best players in the world; since, in 1834 La Bourdonnais met Irish master Alexander MacDonnell in a series of six matches, with La Bourdonnais winning (+45, =13, -27) overall, and created a fervor for the game not only in England but France as well. The publication began in 1836 and the premature death of the Bourdonnais in 1840, interrupted for two years the publication of Palamedes, before it was revived by Pierre Saint-Amant, his successor in the supremacy of the Cafe de la Regence. The magazine lived another five years, with nearly 300 subscribers, before dying in 1847.Condition:Corners heavily bumped with the back heal corner chipped away, previous owner's name to front paste down, some page staining through page 36 mostly affecting frontispiece and title, some soiling and internal fingering else a good copy of a very scarce chess periodical.

        Juggernaut: It's Present State,

London: Hatchard and Son,, 1843. under British Patronage & Support, as settled by Lord Auckland. With an Introductory Letter to Lord Fitzgerald and Vesci. Octavo. Stitched as issued. A touch of foxing to title page, light signs of handling to back cover. An excellent copy. Second edition, originally published in 1842, but with a new Introductory Letter (dated 1843); both editions are rare, this one recorded by Copac in only two British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Cambridge), and OCLC locates just one (Peabody Essex Museum). Presentation copy from the author, inscribed at the head of title page: "The Revd. Dr Jarvis, with the author's respects". "Juggernaut" was the British word for the enormous Hindu temple car used at the Jagannath Temple at Puri. The East India Company extracted a toll from visitors to the shrine and there was uproar in some quarters in Britain about what was considered a levy on "idolatry". Lord Auckland oversaw the abolition of the practice in 1839. Strachan mentions in his Introductory Letter that publication of this revised edition had been suspended because of the "disastrous intelligence from Affghanistan [sic]", a reference to the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42).

All Five Christmas Books: A CHRISTMAS CAROL; THE CHIMES; THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH; THE BATTLE OF LIFE; and THE HAUNTED MAN AND THE GHOST'S BARGAIN

1843. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843; C&H 1845[1844]; Bradbury & Evans 1846[1845]; B&E 1846; B&E 1848. [Together, five volumes.] Original red cloth (rose-brown cloth for the first title) decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt. First Editions of all five of Charles Dickens's Christmas books -- four of them issued in consecutive Decembers (the second and third post-dated), and the fifth two years later.~A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a copy of the first issue, with the "Stave I" chapter heading and with all 38 of the other first-issue points enumerated by Smith. The title page is in blue and red, and the endpapers are chalky green. Condition is bright and near-fine (binding a little askew, a tiny trace of wear at the spine ends, but otherwise remarkably free of wear or soil, gilt bright, the original endpapers firm and uncracked).~THE CHIMES has the vignette title page in the first and less-common state, with "Chapman & Hall" printed within the vignette itself. Condition is unusually bright, fine except for slightly cracked endpapers.~THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH has the ad leaf in the second state, beginning "New Edition of Oliver Twist...". As with the preceding volume, it is a bright copy, fine except for some cracking of the endpapers.~THE BATTLE OF LIFE has the vignette title page in the second state of four, without an angel holding the banner (about 90% of copies are in the fourth state, and the first and third are almost unheard-of). It is a fine, bright copy.~THE HAUNTED MAN is the only one of the five not to have issue points. It too is a bright copy, fine except for very slight darkening of the spine and the presence of a large generic bookplate.~The strength of the group is in their condition. The five books are housed in a morocco-backed slipcase, each in a separate chemise. Smith II, 4-5-6-8-9. Provenance: most of the volumes bear the small leather bookplate of Herbert L. Carlebach (1890-?), who donated some of his library to Harvard.

CONVENTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE MEXICAN REPUBLIC, CONCLUDED JANUARY 30, 1843

[Washington], 1843. Folio. Gathered signatures, string-tied. Some wear on old folds and chips at foredge. A few pencil margin notes. Withal, still very good. The official, folio, printing of this treaty. Such printings were done in small numbers. This treaty called for arbitration in the outstanding Mexican and U.S. claims. According to Bancroft, "The treaty of arbitration was a thorn in the flesh of many who had cast an evil eye on Mexico, as it did away with all pretexts for complaint against the latter Republic, and postponed indefinitely the acquisition of Texas." Not for long, as it turned out. This was the sixth, and last, Mexican treaty with the U.S. before war came after the annexation of Texas. OCLC locates only a single copy, at The New York Public Library. Not in Streeter TEXAS. Very rare. MALLOY, p.1103. OCLC 41010415.

A FINE AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM CHARLES DARWIN TO HIS PUBLISHER

Bromley, Kent dated by Darwin June 29 postmarked July 1, 1843 - Letter in manuscript, folded and addressed to Mr. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed.(Freeman). ‘The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin’s intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal scientific training. He returned a hard-headed man of science, knowing the importance of evidence, almost convinced that species had not always been as they were since the creation but had undergone change. The experiences of his five years.and what they led to, built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought’ (DSB) Of the great exploratory voyages, ‘a most important place is taken by the voyage of the ‘Beagle’ in 1831-1834.Darwin’s name is so associated with the evolutionary idea through which he profoundly influenced scientific, philosophical, political, religious, and ethical thought, that certain of his other claims are often forgotten.
