Lao Tseu Tao Te King. Le Livre de la Voie et de la Vertu . . . traduit en Français . . . par Stanislaus Julien.

Paris: l'Imprimerie Royale, 1842 xliv, 304 pp. Contemporary black paper boards, old manuscript spine label. Spine and edges rubbed. FIRST EDITION of the complete Tao Te Ching to be published in a Western language. The founding work of Taoism, the Tao-te Ching is said to have been written in the 6th century BCE by Lao-Tzu (or Laozi, "Old Master"), a contemporary of Confucius and a central figure of Chinese culture and history. The book was first a philosophy, but it evolved into a religion when it was adopted officially in 440 CE, when Lao-Tzu was venerated as a deity. Lao-Tzu's famously cryptic Tao-te Ching is one of the Five Chinese Classics and one of the most widely read books in history. Apart from the Bible, it is likely the most-translated classic ever published.

Doppia rete inquadratura sui piatti. bordi dorati. scintillante guardie bianche. Tracce di attrito sul piatto e sui bordi. Un graffio sul bordo inferiore del volume 1 0,5cm. immacolata carta, molto camice bianco, con qualche rara macchie. Alcune tavole più ingiallita. Bella copia in buone condizioni.

        Poems.

London: Edward Moxon,, 1842. Two volumes, octavo (162 x 95 mm). Contemporary half calf by M. Bell of Richmond, spines gilt-ruled in compartments with black morocco title label, marbled sides, red speckled edges. Bell has mistakenly transposed the volume numbers on the spines. Covers rubbed and scuffed, mild red mark to top of front board of volume two, rear joint of volume two just starting at the head, still a sound and internally clean set, very good condition overall. First edition of Tennyson's important early collection, containing the first appearance of "Ulysses". The publication was Tennyson's second with Edward Moxon (after Poems, 1833), containing original unpublished poetry written in the intervening decade, which was one of Tennyson's saddest and his most creative, following the sudden death of his dear friend Arthur Henry Hallam, in whose memory In Memoriam (1850) was written. "Ulysses" and "Morte d'Arthur", both appearing for the first time here, are "great poems prompted by the death of his Arthur... finding extraordinarily compelling correlatives, in ancient worlds, for his feelings personal and universal, ancient and modern" (ODNB). The first volume reprints selections from poems that had been previously published in Poems, Chiefly Lyrical (1830) and Poems (1833), many of them significantly revised. These include such classics as "The Lotos Eaters" and "The Lady of Shalott". Though the collection was much reprinted, the first edition is very scarce.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER concerning a demostration of Hypnotism SIGNED "DUNDONALD" by THOMAS COCHRANE, 10TH EARL OF DUNDONALD, addressed to DR. JOHN ELLIOTSON, who is recognized for his role in promoting Mesmerism and Phrenology and for the introduction of the stethoscope to the UK. TOGETHER with a RARE 1809 PORTRAIT OF LORD COCHRANE.

Hanover Lodge, May 2, 1842., 1842.. Very good. - Approximately 100 words penned on both sides of a 7-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet of creamy white paper. In his letter penned from his home, Hanover Lodge in London, Lord Cochrane writes Dr. John Elliotson to thank him for permitting his "attendance at your mansion, during a series of most interesting experiments, on the susceptibility of the human frame to certain influences produced on the mind....". Lord Cochrane is likely referring to experiments in mesmerism which Dr. Elliotson conducted at his home. He goes on to mention that "a young friend" has sent him "a couple of pamphlets, which he has presumed to write on the spleen and the thyroid body." He asks Elliotson to accept a copy "As I understand that his observations confirm the wonderful phenomena which you exhibited...." Signed "Dundonald". Folded for mailing with minor creasing. The letter may have once been tipped into an album as there is a short thin sliver of paper adhering to the lower inner edge of the verso. Very good. Together with a rich oval engraved portrait of "Lord Cochrane" on 9-1/4 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide heavy stock by "R. Cooper" [quite probably Richard Cooper, the younger]. "Given extra in the Supplement to the 1st Vol. of Ackermann's Repository of Arts" is printed along the bottom of the sheet. This portrait of young Lord Cochrane was published in June 1809The British naval flag officer Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, Marquess of Maranhao (1775-1860) was successful in nearly all of his naval actions during the Napoleonic Wars, leading Napoleon himself to nickname him "The Sea Wolf". Following a controversial conviction for fraud, Lord Cochrane led the rebel navies of Chile and Brazil in their wars of independence and contributed to Peruvian independence. He was pardoned and returned to the Royal Navy with the rank of Rear Admiral of the Blue and subsequently Admiral of the Red and Rear-Admiral of the United Kingdom. His exploits inspired 19th and 20th century naval fiction, including the works of C.S. Forester as Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian as Jack Aubrey. He was indeed the real-life Master and Commander.John Elliotson, M.D. (1791-1868) was at the leading edge of his profession. A professor of the principles and practice of medicine at University College London and senior physician at University College Hospital, he was one of the first to use a stethoscope in the U.K. and to make use of acupuncture. His interest in what were then new fields led him to become co-editor with William Collins Engledue, M.D. of the influential journal "The Zoist: A Journal of Cerebral Physiology & Mesmerism, and Their Applications to Human Welfare".

Published by the Author. Sold by Crocker & Brewster, Boston, [etc.] . Printed by B.L. Hamlen, New Haven 1842 - Morse, Samuel French B. Second edition, first octavo edition. Engraved portrait frontispiece to vol.I by Asher Brown Durand after Samuel F.B. Morse, no printer's name given. lxxvi, 938; 1004 pp. 2 vols. Large 8vo (10-1/2 x 6 7/8 inches; 269 x 174 mm). The Second Edition, The First Unabridged Octavo Edition. A fine copy of the rare second and first octavo edition of Webster's unabridged dictionary, the last that Webster published before his death in 1843. This is the textually best edition published in Webster's lifetime, incorporating his final revisions, 5,000 new definitions, and a preface and introduction "on the origin, history and connection of the languages of western Asia and Europe, with an explanation of the principles on which languages are formed." Skeel notes that 3,000 copies of this edition were printed, fewer than the 5 or 6 thousand that Webster wanted, but more than the 2,500 of the 1828 first edition. A prospectus (Skeel 585) advertised the edition at $13 (sheep) and $14 (calf, gilt). The work was in the press for over a year; a note in Webster's hand on a copy in the Connecticut State Library states "First signature of this edition impressed Oct. 22, 1839. Last sheet impressed January 30, 1841 15 months & days." The edition sold slowly, with nearly half of the run still in sheets at the time of Webster's death. Skeel 586; cf. Grolier, American 36; cf. PMM 291; cf. Sabin 102335. Provenance: George W. Turner (of Elmscourt or Elms Court, Natchez, Mississippi, inscription in both volumes dated 1842) Contemporary speckled sheep, contrasting morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, marbled edges.         Garantien der Harmonie und Freiheit.

Vivis, im Verlage des Verfassers, 1842. - 8vo. XII, [2], 264 pp. Contemp. fine cloth, back lettered gilt, faint traces of a bookplate removed from inside front, minimal wear to lower corners. A very attractive copy, clean and without any browning. Preserved in a nice modern box. First edition. The most seminal of the writings of Wilhelm Weitling, with Moses Hess among the earliest communist agitators in Germany and its first leader of proletarian birth. It has been marked as the "catechism" for German socialist workers before Marx, and was praised by the latter as the "incomparable and brilliant début of the German working man". Weitling preached a christian utopian socialism, in his own testimony deducted from the New Testament, and mainly fashioned after the ideas of Fourier and Cabet. In his view private property was permitted as long as there was an abundance of unoccupied land, but since that was no longer the case individual property became an injustice and the cause of the misery of the people. Individual property therefore should be replaced by collective ownership and, though he hoped for a peaceful transition, revolutionary violence may be inevitable to introduce this new order. Weitling was an illegitimate son of a French father and a German servant-girl. He learned for tailor in his birth-place Magdeburg and then began to travel through Germany and in the 1830's settled in Paris. There he became acquainted with French socialist agitation and a.o. member of the club of revolutionary Germans Bund der Gerechten (League of Equitables). He moved to Switzerland in 1841 and was soon imprisoned and expelled, and spent the rest of his untiring life in Germany, England and America, where he continued his communist agitation among German immigrants in New York and founded the failed colony Communia in Wisconsin. Weitling exposed his ideas principally in three works: his first printed work Die Menschheit, wie sie ist und sein soll, a small pamphlet published in Paris in 1838, the present book, and Das Evangelium eines armen Sünders in 1845. The present books seems to be the most complete exposition of his socialist thoughts and plans. It was issued privately in Vevey (near Lausannne, Vivid in German) and the local printer (unveiled on the verso of the half title as L. Alex. Michod) was paid with money that was collected by German comrades in France and Switzerland. There was a second edition published in Vivis in 1845, and a third in Hamburg in 1849. Stammhammer I, p. 261. Not in Kress, Goldsmiths' or Einaudi. GBV locates 3 copies in German libraries. OCLC locates 4 copies in US libraries. Quack IV, p. 312-328.
