Ela, the Outcast; or, The Gipsy of Rosemary Dell. A romance of thrilling interest. By the Author of "Angelina ...".

Printed & published by E. Lloyd. 1841 Illus; without the front. plate, some sl. browning. Sl. later half red roan; sl. rubbing at tail of spine. A good copy.In 104 pts with wood-cut illus. Ono did not possess a copy of the early Lloyd edition of this classic blood which was advertised in parts by May 1840, and provided Prest's trademark pseudonym 'Author of Ela'. The early parts carry the gutter imprints of J.K. Edwards, 44 Holywell Street, Strand; printed by J. Graves, 30 Curtain Road, Shoreditch. The preface of this edition is dated March 15th, 1841 and in it Prest states that the weekly sale has been 30,000 copies and that this is the "eighteenth edition". The edition statement may refer to reprinting of individual parts. (It is clear that the preface in Ono 478, Lloyd's 1850 edition, was set up from this edition.) The Preface refers to the dramatization by Marianne Denvil performed for 'nearly one hundred successive nights!' at the Pavilion Theatre. Prest has another tale in the press, which is probably 'Gallant Tom'. This copy has the booklabel of Arthur E. Waite.

Background mat very lightly foxed, frame lightly scuffed. Issued to ""Charles De Morse"", and signed by ""David Burnet"", Pres."" and ""William Seven, Sec of Treas.""A beautifully engraved Government Bond issued by the Republic of Texas in 1841 to the well loved Texan known as ""The Father of Texas Journalism"", Charles De Morse. The bond was payable at the interest of eight percent per annum (a rate not that dissimilar to the interest rates of today)…payable seminally on the first days of January and July. The production of the certificate was a joint venture between the “Southern Bank Note Co.” and “Endicott & Clark, New Orleans”, both of which have their imprints along the lower edge of the principal instrument. DeMorse accepted a commission in the Texas Navy but resigned in July 1836 to become a major in the army, where he received military training under Albert Sidney Johnston. When the army was disbanded in 1837 DeMorse entered law practice at Matagorda and later became the stock commissioner, charged with refunding the public debt, under President Mirabeau B. Lamar. He became the reporter for the Texas House of Representatives and was later elected Clarksville’s first mayor, and was a congressman-elect at the time of the annexation of Texas in 1845. During the Civil War, DeMorse organized and served as colonel of the 29th Texas Cavalry, a unit that fought in Arkansas and the Indian Territory. He was the commanding officer of the force at the battle of Poison Springs, near Camden, Arkansas, where an attempted Union advance was repulsed. In 1842 De Morse founded The Northern Standard, later renamed The Clarksville Standard, one of Texas' foremost newspapers, with his newspaper second in circulation among Texas newspapers and had agents as far away as Philadelphia, Boston and New York. He was often referred to as ""The Father Of Texas Journalism""A handsome piece, presenting well, with Texas roots submerged in history."

Essai sur les Glaciers et sur le Terrain Erratique du Bassin du Rhone

One large folding hand-tinted map (tear neatly repaired without loss), 8 lithographic plates (one folding), & text illus. 2 p.l., x, 363 (i.e. 362) pp., one leaf of errata. 8vo, orig. printed upper wrapper bound in cont. half-cloth & marbled boards, spine gilt. Lausanne: M. Ducloux, 1841. First edition. This is a classic work on the phenomenon of erratic blocks and the function of glaciers in transporting them. Charpentier's theory, delivered in a paper in 1834, was met with disbelief and scorn. "Undismayed, Charpentier continued his observations and invited the incredulous to visit him and see the evidence for themselves. Among his visitors was Louis Agassiz, who was soon carried away with such enthusiasm for the theory of the Ice Age that he visited a number of glaciers and blocks and rushed into print, ahead of Charpentier, with his Études sur les Glaciers (1840)…Charpentier received Agassiz' book on 28 October 1840, three days before he finished his own Essai sur les Glaciers, which was published in February 1841. The scrupulous care with which he weighed the evidence and described the phenomenon of erratic blocks and the function of glaciers in transporting them makes this book a classic."-D.S.B., III, p. 211. While Agassiz is generally credited with the origin of the theory of the Ice Age, the theory had in fact been developed long before by Charpentier. Very nice copy with a presentation inscription from the author on the upper wrapper: "à Monsieur Schwedler hommage de l'auteur" (the final four letters of "auteur" have been cropped by the binder's knife).

"The Times" Testimonal: Report of the Trial of the Action, Bogle Versus Lawson, For a Libel Published in "The Times" London-Newspaper, Tried at the Summer Assizes for the Country of Surrey, Held at Croydon, Monday, August 16, 1841, Before the Right Honourable Sir Nicholas Conyngham Tindal, Knt. Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, And a Special Jury; Together with the Proceedings of a Public Meeting of Merchants, Bankers and Others, Held at the Mansion House, London, Friday, October 1, 1841, On the Subject of Such Action, And of the Committee then Appointed; And Also a List of Subscribers to "The Times" Testimonial. Published by the Committee. London: John Hatchard and Son, Henry Butterworth and Pelham Richardson, 1841. 179, [1] pp. Half-title lacking. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Recent quarter cloth over marbled boards, printed paper title label to spine. Some toning to text, light soiling to title page. A nice copy of a rare title. * First edition. A sensational case of a million-pound plot to defraud continental bankers by forged letters of credit, or lettres circulaires, purporting to have been issued by the bankers Glyn, Hallifax, Mills, & Co. The plot was exposed by a Times of London correspondent in a letter, published in the newspaper on 26th May 1840, which referred to "the great forgery company established on the continent lately detected," and naming the co-conspirators. These included the Marquis of Bourbel, "the chief of the gang," the Baron Louis d'Arjuzon, alias De Castel, Pipe "an Englishman who professes to be a solicitor in London," and Cunningham Graham "an anonymous partner in the house of Bogle, Kerrich, and Co." The case was sensational in both social and in banking circles. It exposed the largely unregulated and certainly sloppy banking practices associated with letters of credit (easy to forge and difficult to police) and the almost brilliant ingenuity of an international gang of con men. The naming of Allan George Bogle-who was almost certainly involved-triggered this libel action against John Joseph Lawson, the printer and publisher of the Times, and resulted in the award of one farthing damages for Bogle, but enormous expense and the co [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

An Epitome, Historical and Statistical, Descriptive of the Royal Naval Service of England.

London: Ackermann and Company, , 1841. With the assistance of Lieutenant Lawford Miles, R.N. Embellished with eight highly-finished, coloured, engraved views of shipping, by W. Knell, besides fourteen coloured illustrations of the flags, pendants, and ensigns, as worn by Her Majesty's ships and vessels in commission. Octavo. Original grey-green diaper-grain cloth, ornamental blind blocking on sides, gilt motif of the stern of a ship of the line on front cover, neatly rebacked with the original red skiver spine laid down, yellow coated endpapers. 8 hand-coloured aquatints, 14 hand-coloured illustrations of flags in the text. Spine a little rubbed, some wear to corners otherwise a very good copy. First edition. A most attractive work containing really spirited plates, with excellent colouring, engraved by Newton Smith Fielding after William Adolphus Knell. Knell had originally worked in "the popular Dutch seventeenth-century marine style, [but] in mid-career he shifted to an English manner to maintain his share of the market. The results were lighter and less heavy-handed pictures marked by translucent seas and broader handling in the skies. He specialized in inshore scenes of England, France, and the Low Countries" (ODNB). With the simple engraved bookplate of "Conygham": Albert Denison (formerly Conyngham), first Baron Londesborough (1805-1860), "enthusiastic antiquary", connoisseur of the arts and politician, "on 4 September 1849 he had taken the sole name of Denison, in lieu of that of Conyngham, to comply with the will of his uncle the banker and MP William Joseph Denison, whose enormous wealth he inherited" (ODNB).

        Autograph letter (fragment) signed. N. p. o. d., [c. 1841].

1841. 4to. 2 pp. With blindstamped monogram. To an addressee in Vienna (possibly Ignaz Bösendorfer?): "[...] Si la chose reuissit" (breaking off). Published in: Eva Badura-Skoda, "Eine private Briefsammlung", in: Festschrift Otto Erich Deutsch (Kassel 1963), p. 280-290, at p. 286f.

Shocking Murder of Mr Adams--Our Printer--The Body Discovered

1841. An Account of a New York City Murder Overlooked by McDade [Trial]. Colt, John [1810-1842], Defendant. "Shocking Murder of Mr Adams--Our Printer--The Body Discovered on Board a Vessel--Arrest of the Supposed Murderer, And Observations on the Character of Both, Showing them to be Creatures of Circumstances," The Herald of the New Moral World and Millennial Harbinger, Volume I, No. 17, New York, September 16, 1841, pp. 140-143. Article bound into a complete run of this publication, Volume I, No. 1 to Volume II, No.7. [292] pp. Quarto (10-3/4" x 8"). Contemporary quarter calf over pebbled cloth, gilt fillets, title (reading New Moral World) and volume number (reading Vol. I-II) to spine. Light rubbing to boards, corners bumped, joints cracked, spine abraded with a few large chips just below title and at spine ends. Moderate toning, darker in places, light foxing. Struck-through serial (?) number in small recent hand, interior otherwise clean. * This account is overlooked by McDade, who lists two other newspaper accounts. As the title indicates, Adams was the printer of the Herald of the New Moral World, a liberal general-interest non-denominational Christian periodical. The murderer, John C. Colt, who appears to have acted impulsively during an argument, was the brother of Samuel Colt, the notable gun manufacturer. (For some unknown reason Colt used an axe instead of a pistol.) His deed was discovered when he attempted to ship Adams's body to New Orleans in a crate, where his body would not be identified. For some reason, Samuel Colt promoted the value of his pistol during his testimony, even interrupting the proceedings with a demonstration. No one knows why the court allowed this. John Colt was convicted and sentenced to death. He married his girlfriend the night before his execution and escaped the hangman by stabbing himself in the heart on the following morning. This account is one of the few negative articles in the optimistic Herald, a fascinating publication filled with reports of inventions, discoveries, social improvements and other examples of human progress.

An Epitome, Historical and Statistical, Descriptive of the Royal Naval Service of England.

London: Ackermann and Company, 1841 - Octavo. Original grey-green diaper-grain cloth, ornamental blind blocking on sides, gilt motif of the stern of a ship of the line on front cover, neatly rebacked with the original red skiver spine laid down, yellow coated endpapers. Spine a little rubbed, some wear to corners otherwise a very good copy. 8 hand-coloured aquatints, 14 hand-coloured illustrations of flags in the text.
