        Autograph letter (fragment) signed. N. p. o. d., [c. 1841].

1841. 4to. 2 pp. With blindstamped monogram. To an addressee in Vienna (possibly Ignaz Bösendorfer?): "[...] Si la chose reuissit" (breaking off). Published in: Eva Badura-Skoda, "Eine private Briefsammlung", in: Festschrift Otto Erich Deutsch (Kassel 1963), p. 280-290, at p. 286f.

Shocking Murder of Mr Adams--Our Printer--The Body Discovered

1841. An Account of a New York City Murder Overlooked by McDade [Trial]. Colt, John [1810-1842], Defendant. "Shocking Murder of Mr Adams--Our Printer--The Body Discovered on Board a Vessel--Arrest of the Supposed Murderer, And Observations on the Character of Both, Showing them to be Creatures of Circumstances," The Herald of the New Moral World and Millennial Harbinger, Volume I, No. 17, New York, September 16, 1841, pp. 140-143. Article bound into a complete run of this publication, Volume I, No. 1 to Volume II, No.7. [292] pp. Quarto (10-3/4" x 8"). Contemporary quarter calf over pebbled cloth, gilt fillets, title (reading New Moral World) and volume number (reading Vol. I-II) to spine. Light rubbing to boards, corners bumped, joints cracked, spine abraded with a few large chips just below title and at spine ends. Moderate toning, darker in places, light foxing. Struck-through serial (?) number in small recent hand, interior otherwise clean. * This account is overlooked by McDade, who lists two other newspaper accounts. As the title indicates, Adams was the printer of the Herald of the New Moral World, a liberal general-interest non-denominational Christian periodical. The murderer, John C. Colt, who appears to have acted impulsively during an argument, was the brother of Samuel Colt, the notable gun manufacturer. (For some unknown reason Colt used an axe instead of a pistol.) His deed was discovered when he attempted to ship Adams's body to New Orleans in a crate, where his body would not be identified. For some reason, Samuel Colt promoted the value of his pistol during his testimony, even interrupting the proceedings with a demonstration. No one knows why the court allowed this. John Colt was convicted and sentenced to death. He married his girlfriend the night before his execution and escaped the hangman by stabbing himself in the heart on the following morning. This account is one of the few negative articles in the optimistic Herald, a fascinating publication filled with reports of inventions, discoveries, social improvements and other examples of human progress.

An Epitome, Historical and Statistical, Descriptive of the Royal Naval Service of England. With the assistance of Lieutenant Lawford Miles, R.N. Embellished with eight highly-finished, coloured, engraved views of shipping, by W. Knell, besides fourteen coloured illustrations of the flags, pendants, and ensigns, as worn by Her Majesty's ships and vessels in commission.

London: Ackermann and Company, 1841 - Octavo. Original grey-green diaper-grain cloth, ornamental blind blocking on sides, gilt motif of the stern of a ship of the line on front cover, neatly rebacked with the original red skiver spine laid down, yellow coated endpapers. Spine a little rubbed, some wear to corners otherwise a very good copy. 8 hand-coloured aquatints, 14 hand-coloured illustrations of flags in the text. First edition. A most attractive work containing really spirited plates, with excellent colouring, engraved by Newton Smith Fielding after William Adolphus Knell. Knell had originally worked in "the popular Dutch seventeenth-century marine style, [but] in mid-career he shifted to an English manner to maintain his share of the market. The results were lighter and less heavy-handed pictures marked by translucent seas and broader handling in the skies. He specialized in inshore scenes of England, France, and the Low Countries" (ODNB). With the simple engraved bookplate of "Conygham": Albert Denison (formerly Conyngham), first Baron Londesborough (1805-1860), "enthusiastic antiquary", connoisseur of the arts and politician, "on 4 September 1849 he had taken the sole name of Denison, in lieu of that of Conyngham, to comply with the will of his uncle the banker and MP William Joseph Denison, whose enormous wealth he inherited" (ODNB).       , 1841. 1841. One of the Most Detailed Accounts of a Major Nineteenth-Century Financial Swindle [Trial]. Hughes, W. Hughes, Editor. "The Times" Testimonal: Report of the Trial of the Action, Bogle Versus Lawson, For a Libel Published in "The Times" London-Newspaper, Tried at the Summer Assizes for the Country of Surrey, Held at Croydon, Monday, August 16, 1841, Before the Right Honourable Sir Nicholas Conyngham Tindal, Knt. Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, And a Special Jury; Together with the Proceedings of a Public Meeting of Merchants, Bankers and Others, Held at the Mansion House, London, Friday, October 1, 1841, On the Subject of Such Action, And of the Committee then Appointed; And Also a List of Subscribers to "The Times" Testimonial. Published by the Committee. London: John Hatchard and Son, Henry Butterworth and Pelham Richardson, 1841. 179, [1] pp. Half-title lacking. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Recent quarter cloth over marbled boards, printed paper title label to spine. Some toning to text, light soiling to title page. A nice copy of a rare title. * First edition. A sensational case of a million-pound plot to defraud continental bankers by forged letters of credit, or lettres circulaires, purporting to have been issued by the bankers Glyn, Hallifax, Mills, & Co. The plot was exposed by a Times of London correspondent in a letter, published in the newspaper on 26th May 1840, which referred to "the great forgery company established on the continent lately detected," and naming the co-conspirators. These included the Marquis of Bourbel, "the chief of the gang," the Baron Louis d'Arjuzon, alias De Castel, Pipe "an Englishman who professes to be a solicitor in London," and Cunningham Graham "an anonymous partner in the house of Bogle, Kerrich, and Co." The case was sensational in both social and in banking circles. It exposed the largely unregulated and certainly sloppy banking practices associated with letters of credit (easy to forge and difficult to police) and the almost brilliant ingenuity of an international gang of con men. The naming of Allan George Bogle-who was almost certainly involved-triggered this libel action against John Joseph Lawson, the printer and publisher of the Times, and resulted in the award of one farthing damages for Bogle, but enormous expense and the co

The larger quarto edition is more suitable to the fine illustrations by Duménil, Roch, Vaillant, Kiener himself, and others, as this work was meant to be of both scientific and aesthetic value. Nissen only mentions the 8vo edition, but on original wrappers from Kiener's time the work was stated to be available in "Grand in-8°, papier grand-raisin...figures coloriées. 6 fr.", AND "Grand in-4°, papier vélin satiné, figures coloriées 12 [fr]", i.e. twice as expensive. Louis Charles Kiener (1799-1881) made use of the famous Delessert collection and that of the Natural History Museum of Paris, the largest and most varied repositories of conchological material on the continent. "He soon put it to good use; and in 1834 he published the first part of his ?Spécies?... This exquisitely illustrated iconography, started before the Sowerbys and Reeve began to issue theirs, appeared at intervals up to 1880, when eleven volumes had been completed" (Dance, A History of Shell Collecting). This volume covers a fairly coherent group of neogastropods, all with strong plicae on the columella, viz. the Mitridae, Costellariidae, Volutidae, Marginellidae and Cystiscidae. The fine, hand-coloured plates by Maubert, Roch, De la Haye, and others are among the most beautiful illustrations of muricids and ranellids ever published. Publication of these parts started in 1834 with Marginella and was completed in 1841 with the last part of Marginella, with Voluta and Mitra published in 1838-1839 (Faber, 2011). Slight rubbing to the boards, a few sections in the text spotted, but generally rather clean; a few plates with some spots, but mostly clean. The colouring strong yet subtle, often bright, enhanced with gum arabic. Caprotti, p. 197; Dance, p. 137; Faber, pp. 64-65; Nissen ZBI, 2183.

Sections of the books are introduced with short biographies of famous Naturalists , Cuvier, Buffon, D'Azara, Camper,Pennant etc with Longstaffe's facsimiles of their signatures. The works are scholarly rather than popularist or anecdotal with Latin names given before common names, and species ordered carefully by genus etc. The illustrations are carefully made, and are after a number of artists including Lear,Stewart and Swainson. In the Ornithology volume, the title page is illustrated with a gothic screen motif, with "The Naturalists Library ,Ornithologhy" as the title. In the earlier volume, there is a much more ornate title page with "Naturalists Library ,Mammalia oven as the title. W.Hylton Longstaffe ( he also spells his name Hilton Longstaff) is known to have been the Town Clerk of Gateshead- he designed the Coat of Arms for the Town Corporation- and there was a W.Hylton Dyer Longstaffe who was the author of "The History and Antiquities of Darlington"( 1854) and a description with a sketch of Middlesborough Priory when it was discovered in 1846 with the demolition of the Middlesbrough Farm house. Very unusual miniature manuscript works, which have survived in Near Fine condition.

Das nationale System der politischen Oekonomie Erster Band [all published]. Der internationale Handel, die Handelspolitik und der deutsche Zollverein.

Stuttgart & Tübingen: J. G. Cotta, 1841 - Octavo (209 × 120 mm). Contemporary half cloth and marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt. Spine ends and corners lightly worn; leaves browned, severely in places, as usual due to poor paper stock; pencil underling and marginalia in a contemporary hand; a very good copy. First edition of List's major work. One of the earliest and most severe critics of the classical school of political economy, List (1789–1846) "denounced Adam Smith and his disciples as the 'cosmopolitan school' and held that universal free trade was an ideal that could be achieved only in the far distant future. For the time being, he argued, each nation should foster the development of its own manufactures by import duties and even outright prohibitions. Only by such means could countries like Germany, Russia and the United States ever hope to achieve the industrial efficiency that would enable them to compete on equal terms with Britain. List never used the term 'infant industry' but the infant industry argument is clearly what he had in mind because he specifically excluded agriculture from all his protectionist arguments and even conceded that global free trade was an ultimate desirable goal In recent times, List has been hailed not so much as a spokesman for protectionism as a champion of the ambitions of underdeveloped countries. No doubt he was one of the first to recognise the role of national power in the international division of labour and present-day advocates of the dependency school of economic development may legitimately regard him as a forerunner" (Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, p. 129f).         First Report from the Select Committee on South Australia. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 9th March 1841. [Together with] Second Report . . . together with the Minutes of Evidence, Appendix, and Index. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 10 June 1841

The Queen's Printer], [London 1841 - Foolscap folio, two volumes, 8 pages (the last being the endorsement); and xl, 272, x, 358 (appendix), 58 (index) pages plus 4 large folding hand-coloured maps (including 3 by John Arrowsmith). The maps are (1) 'Plan of the District of Adelaide, shewing the application of the Running Survey to that locality' (approximately 500 x 600 mm); (2) 'The District of Adelaide, South Australia; As divided into Country Sections. From the Trigonometrical Surveys of Colonel Light' . . . (500 x 600 mm); (3) 'The Maritime Portion of South Australia, from Capn. Flinders and the more recent Surveys made by the Survr. Genl. of the Colonies' (620 x 500 mm); (4) 'Map shewing the Special Survey in South Australia, to the Eastward of the Gulf of St Vincent' (515 x 600 mm). Matching modern half calf and cloth (retaining the original printed blue front wrapper to the Second Report); the First Report has a faint stamp at the head of the moderately creased title leaf, and some insect damage resulting in slight loss (now expertly stabilized); the Second Report has some stains to the top seven centimetres of the last twenty leaves (moderately heavy on only the last handful); maps offset and a little foxed, with some tiny edge tears and creases (mainly near the stubs); some longer tears near the stubs expertly sealed (but with an old and indifferent tape repair to one tear on the blank verso); overall in very good condition. 'This Report contains very complete information regarding the Colony from its foundation [in 1836] to 1841' (Ferguson, referring to the Second Report). Wakefield's self-supporting system of colonization, administered by the South Australian Colonization Commission, failed and the commission was dissolved in January 1840. 'The new board of three salaried commissioners slowly became aware that the colony's funds in London were rapidly dwindling. After months of inexcusable procrastination they had no choice but to throw the colony on the mercies of the Colonial Office. Nevertheless the blame of their own shortcomings and extravagance was placed squarely on [Governor] Gawler for his irregularities, "reckless" expenditure and alleged grave errors of judgment.' The imperial parliament accepted the select committee's recommendations and took control of the colony's affairs. Although the select committee had refused to condemn Gawler and reported that 'even his severest critics had suggested no way in which Gawler's expenditure might have been significantly reduced', he was abandoned as the scapegoat and after his recall in May 1841, he was never again to find public employment (Australian Dictionary of Biography).       1841. Folio. LXI [1], 146; 48 [Anhang] SS. Mit 13, davon 3 gefalt. und 8 ganzs. Taf.

» Blondel p. 364 - What else?.
