Alaric at Rome. A Prize Poem, Recited in Rugby School, June XII, MDCCCXL

Combe and Crossley, Rugby 1840 - First edition. 8vo. Arnold's Debut, Inscribed. The first edition of Matthew Arnold's first work, his Rugby School prize poem on the conquest of Rome by the Visigoth Alaric I in 410 AD. Unusual for a prize poem, the work was published anonymously and was not identified as Arnold's until Edmund Gosse made the attribution in 1888. One of the rarest literary debuts, of which Wise noted "Alaric at Rome holds a high place in the rank of modern poetical rarities." This copy inscribed on the front wrapper, "E. Armitage Esqr. from the Author." The recipient, Edward Armitage, was a fellow pupil at Rugby. Arnold had entered Rugby in 1837, where his father was headmaster. The only other copy known to bear an inscription by Arnold ("Miss Ward, 1840") is at the Morgan Library. It is difficult to take an accurate census of copies, as Wise muddied the waters with his facsimile - which he later passed off as genuine. OCLC locates 15 copies and ABPC lists two copies - one in 1979 at Christie's London, and the present copy. Ashley I, p. 8: "holds a high place in the rank of modern poetical rarities"; Hayward 255; Smart, p. 1. Provenance: Dr. J.B. Clemens of New Jersey (two typed letters to Clemens, as prospective purchaser of the book, from Luthur S. Livingston of Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, dated 17 August and 7 September, 1905, loosely inserted); sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 8 January 1945, lot 57 for $400; exhibited: Grolier Club (1950s exhibition card describing it as "the only presentation copy known"); sold, Halsted B. Vander Poel (Christie's, London March 3, 2004, lot 127) Publisher's printed pink wrappers. Faint vertical crease at center, light edgewear. In custom red morocco pull-off case [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Fleurs fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ile de Java.Brussels, Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt, [1880]. Folio. With 40 full-page chromolithographed plates after original watercolours by the author, each plate accompanied by one text leaf, with descriptions in English and French. Original publisher's red half cloth, printed boards.

GFB, p. 60; Plesch, p. 349; Stafleu & Cowan 3025; Stiftung für Botanik 363; Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora 87; cf. Nissen, BBI 931 (first edition). Magnificent colour-plate book by the Belgian artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885) showing Javanese fruits and flowers, beautifully chromolithographed by P. de Pannemaeker. Shortly after having followed her husband to Java, Indonesia, Hoola van Nooten became a widow at 21, leaving her in debt and with a family to support. To make a living, she took to painting the flora of the island. Her extraordinary sketches show the exuberant colour display of tropical fruits and flowers, ideally suited to the new technique of chromolithography. "Van Nooten was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill" (Tomasi). Binding restored, new endpapers, some browning. A good copy of an impressive book.

Der Dom zu Hildesheim. Zweiter Theil (Dritter Theil).

Hildesheim, ?in Commission der Gerstenbergschen Buchhandlung? 1840. - The two rare published text parts of a larger intended monograph on the mediaeval cathedral of Hildesheim in North Germany. Curiously, part 1, which would no doubt have discussed the cathedral?s history and architecture, was never published, but part 2, which discusses a wide range of art treasures kept in the cathedral, is extremely detailed and scholarly, and provides much incidental information about the cathedral?s past. Part 3 provides biographical accounts of St.Bernward and St.Godehard, successive Bishops of Hildesheim in the first half of the eleventh century. A folio plate volume, issued to accompany part 2, is absent (as often). 8vo. 2 vols (all published). (2) + xiv + 272pp ; (8) + 124pp. Contemporary full panelled red morocco, gilt, all edges gilt. A good set, without ownership inscriptions but from the library of the Kings of Hannover (with circular paper labels in top compartments of each spine carrying mid-nineteenth century ink library numbers) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Prominent Ottoman and entourage boarding boats before the Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque].[Istanbul?, ca. 1830/50?]. Watercolour drawing on wove paper (29.5 x 45 cm) with highlights in shellac and a thin black border. Mounted on a larger sheet of paper in a passe-partout.

For the King family: Debrett's Peerage 1840, p. 423 & 1861, p. 338; (Debrett's) Baronetage LXXV (1893), p. 127. A lively scene on the Tophane Quay in Istanbul, with the background dominated by the dome and minaret of the 1580 Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque. The tip of a second minaret, perhaps from a different mosque, is visible in the distance. On the quay, an opulently dressed black-bearded Ottoman (a high official in the Emperor's court or a wealthy merchant?) stands in the centre of the scene with his entourage. He wears red robes trimmed with gold and with black decorations, a white turban around a red fez, and a gold waistband with the hilts of two guns sticking out, and carries a walking stick in his left hand. His entourage includes a white-bearded Islamic holy man(?) with a green turban around a red fez, a Greek or Armenian man in a black hat, a dark-skinned woman in green robes, holding a bundle, and several other men, women and children. They appear to be preparing to depart in the boats that stand ready. Two more dark-skinned women, in white robes with red and blue stripes, follow the party deferentially. Several people appear in the boats in addition to their crews. Four more white-bearded Islamic holy men (each again with a green turban around red fez) sit in one with some women, while two Ottoman infantrymen with bayonets stand in another, one just stepping out. Other parts of the quay show various men busy with their trades or smoking long pipes. From the collection of Hooton Pagnell Hall in Yorkshire, England. With a 1.5 cm tear in the water at the foot of the scene, not approaching the boats, and otherwise in very good condition. A lively and fascinating scene on a quay in Istanbul, with the dome and minaret of Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque prominently shown.

Les Rébus de l'enfance ou Abécédaire en Estampes d'un genre nouveau

Paris: (E. Duverger for) Librairie de l'enfance et de la jeunesse de P. C. Lehuby, 1840. Oblong 12mo (121 x 162 mm). xvi, 64 pp. Engraved title, 13 hand-colored etched plates (or transfer lithographs of etchings) containing 26 illustrations, each pair of scenes within a different whimsical and relevant ornamental border. Various typefaces. Occasional minor staining to text leaves. Publisher's green printed boards (rebacked, somewhat rubbed).*** A slightly off-beat rebus-book for children, with alphabets in large and bold types, syllabaries, and 26 short tales. These stories, for older children who can already read, each provide both a moral lesson and context for the definition of a keyword, which serves as the subject of a rebus, depicted by letters of the alphabet printed below the relevant illustration. Thus two young rascals experiment with a makeshift cannon, with the expected results (burnt hair): the illustration shows the moment of the explosion, and the caption-rebus is "p.t.," for peté (exploded or popped); or a young child sees a hearse, and her father explains the respect due any funeral procession, even that of a stranger: the illustration showing men in mourning carrying a coffin, is captioned "d.c.d." (décédé, deceased). Z is without a rebus, the editors having found themselves at a loss, and the final rebus uses the ampersand (or "et" in French). Four- to six-year olds were different then, if the dialogue is to be believed: one young Ludovic, for example, trying to identify the subject of an engraved memorial portrait held aloft by cherubs, declaims his conclusions: "J'aimerais assez à y reconnaitre les traits du brave et excellent roi Henri IV; il pouvait assez compter sur l'amour de ses sujets pour justifier l'allusion qui me semble fort heureusement exprimée par ces deux amours qui soulèvent le portrait du bon monarque pour le fixer à la colonne de la gloire"... (The rebus is "f.i.j." for effigie.) The publisher's boards contain the date, colophon, and ads for four other Lehuby publications. In 1834 Pierre Charles Lehuby took over the business of Pierre Blanchard, one of the more imaginative and influential children's book publishers of early 19th-century France. OCLC lists two copies, at the BnF and Princeton (in a later binding). Ségolène Le Men, Les abécédaires français illustrés du XIXe siècle, 634. Not in Gumuchian.

THE BOOK OF MORMON. TRANSLATED BY JOSEPH SMITH, JR.

Nauvoo, Il.: Printed by Robinson and Smith, Stereotyped by Shepard and Stearns.Cincinnati, Ohio, 1840. - [5],8-571,[2]pp. plus two preliminary blanks. 12mo. Contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked, original gilt spine laid down, green leather label. Small section at bottom of spine repaired. Corners lightly worn. Titlepage repaired in gutter. Very good, internally clean. Scarce third edition, first state of THE BOOK OF MORMON, published by Ebenezer Robinson and Don Carlos Smith, younger brother of Joseph Smith. This work was actually printed in Cincinnati, despite the Nauvoo imprint. "By December 1839 the Book of Mormon was again out of print, and on the 29th the Nauvoo high council voted to publish a new edition under the supervision of the First Presidency as soon as funds could be raised" - Crawley. Robinson and Smith received permission from Joseph Smith to print 4,000 copies of the book, providing all the necessary funds themselves. The book was stereotyped and printed in Cincinnati, and is known to exist in three states, all printed from the same plates. The present copy is the first state as described by Crawley, who notes that the second and third states may be later impressions struck off in Nauvoo. This edition contains a significant number of revisions and corrections from the 1837 Kirtland second edition. Joseph Smith moved the Church to Kirtland, Ohio in 1831, after founding the movement in Palmyra, New York the previous year. The Church was headquartered in Kirtland until 1838, when Smith relocated to Missouri, and shortly thereafter to the small town of Commerce, Illinois, which Smith re-christened "Nauvoo." It was there that Joseph Smith met his untimely end in 1844, when he and his brother were killed by an angry mob of citizens from neighboring towns. The church remained centered in Nauvoo until 1846 when, amidst a growing sea of hostility, they fled west under the guidance of Brigham Young. FLAKE 597. CRAWLEY 83. HOWES S623, "aa." SABIN 83040. The first four documents concern Nathaniel Sawyer (1784-1875) of Wilton, New Hampshire (son of Nathaniel Sawyer), who was a seaman, at least as early as 1804, and served during the War of 1812, when he was captured in Bengal and returned to England as a sailor on a ship of the East India Company, becoming a prisoner of war on his arrival. The last two documents concern the application by his mother, Prudence (1757-1839) to obtain a pension for the service during the Revolutionary War of her husband, Nathaniel Sawyer (1750-1807) under the 1838 law "An Act granting half-pay and pensions to certain widows." The documents are: 1. Dec. 12, 1804. Partially printed Seaman's Certificate with seal completed by hand, signed by Joseph Wilson as Collector of the District of Marblehead. Sawyer is listed as 21 years of age and six feet tall, dark complexion (8 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches). 2. Jan. 22, 1811. Partially printed Seaman's Certificate with seal completed by hand, signed by William W. Oliver, as (Deputy) Collector of the District of Salem and Beverly. William Wait Oliver (1778-1869) was Salem's longest tenured officer. (3) May 15, 1812, Boston. Note. to "certify that Nathaniel Sawyer has been with me on a voyage to the North of Spain... and that he has paid the customary hospital dues at the Custom House of this port to this day," signed Henry Russell, master. 4. Sept. 25, 1813. Fort William, Bengal. A letter certifying and sealed that Sawyer was captured in Bengal on the Schooner Alligator and is "being permitted to enter as a seaman on board the ... East India Company's ship Northhampton," to return to England, as long as he does not have to raise arms against the United States, and upon arriving in England, will be taken as a prisoner of war." Signed A. Hennessy, Town Major. 5. Sept. 3, 1838. Partially printed document. Sent by attorney Giles Yates to Asaph Sawyer of Cohoes, son of Prudence. in which Giles explains how to complete a New York State document, "Declaration in order to Obtain benefit of the act of Congress of the 7th July 1838 entitled 'An Act granting half-pay and pensions to certain widows'." In ink and pencil, with a long note on the last page explaining listing the information needed. Giles Fonda Yates (1796-1859) was a Schenectady attorney. 6. Sept. 30, 1840. Letter from Giles to [Asaph Sawyer] beginning "Since I last wrote you or conversed with on the subject of Mrs. Sawyer's claim, I have discovered the key to unravel the mystery" which turns out to be the specific names of people her husband served with as well as their attestations. Penciled notes on the verso detailing Sawyer's war record. But by then, Prudence Sawyer was dead.         Malacologie Méditerranéenne et littorale, ou description des mollusques qui vivent dans la Méditerranée ou sur le continent de l'Italie, ainsi que des coquilles qui se trouvent dans les terrains tertiaires Italiens, avec des observations sur leur anatomie, leurs moeurs, leur analogie et leur gisement. Ouvrage servant de faune malacologique Italienne et de complément a la Conchiologia fossile subapennica de Brocchi.

      - Bruxelles, M. Hayez, 1840. Large 4to (29.1 x 22.0 cm). 173 pp., 12 engraved plates of which six finely hand-coloured (double suite). Contemporary blue limp leather, blue printed label with hand-written title on front wrapper.l Very rare and important publication on Mediterranean molluscs by the Belgian malacologist François Joseph Cantraine (1801-1863), with the plates in double suite, hand-coloured, and plain. With the descriptions of new species. The work is particularly important for its fine illustrations of living animals and shells of often new or poorly known species (e.g. Pteropoda and Nudibranchia, but also Helicidae). Even the smaller species are figured in great detail. We have never seen a double suite copy before. Usually this work is dated as from 1841, perhaps because volume 13 of the Mémoires of the Académie royale in Brussels were published in that year. This, however, is an offprint, dated 1840, and there is no reason to doubt that it was published in that year. Some plate references, e.g. to plate 13, are incorrect. Lacks the single page "Table alphabetique". Spine cover slightly chipped, cancellation stamp over old stamp on title page, some light, marginal spots to a few plates. Colouring very good. Caprotti, p. 15; Not in Nissen. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Manuscript on paper entitled "Grundsätze zur Verfassung einer richtigen Baukunst." 1 p.l., 96 pp., written in a neat & legible German hand. Bound-in are eight large & fine plates with water-color washes over pen-&-ink drawings. 4to (237 x 180 mm.), cont. marbled boards

[Münich: ca. 1840]. A most handsomely illustrated manual on building techniques and materials. The author, about whom we know nothing, describes brick-making, masonry, and carpentry techniques. He also discusses the materials used in building such as stone, timber, bricks, etc. Perhaps the most fascinating section is his account of the construction of a bomb-proof bunker ("Über die Herstellung Bombenfreyer Räume"). The large and beautifully executed plates (305 x 420 mm.), on thick paper, depict brickwork, vaulted structures, arches, wooden joints, three roof constructions, etc. The book served as a textbook for engineering students, with a manuscript ownership note of the Bavarian engineering student, officer, and landowner Alexander Guiot du Ponteil (1824-79), with his purchase note on front paste-down. With the contemporary ownership inscription of "Johann Huschke, Ober-sapper." Fine condition.

PASTRIES, CAKES AND TORTES: GERMAN BAKER'S ART.

Germany: Circa 1840. Thirty-two paintings of cakes and tortes presented together as a folding frieze which, when fully extended, measures almost three-and-a-half metres in length. Certain words in the hand-written descriptions are specific to Germany in the 1840s and suggest that the frieze was utilised as something akin to a baker's catalogue shown to customers who could then order specific items for particular occasions, or as a striking shopfront display for the window. In addition to the traditional chocolate cakes and apple and linzer tortes are more curiously named creations including a 'Brassilianer'. A folding frieze of 32 gouache paintings each with individual hand-written text, each panel measuring 138 mm x 105 mm, the complete frieze is 3500 mm in length, fresh and strong colour, a few marks but in excellent condition, housed in a modern brown linen case with decorative ribbon ties, paper label to front board.
