JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE GEOLOGY AND NATURAL HISTORY of the VARIOUS COUNTRIES VISITED by H.M.S. BEAGLE UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN FITZROY, FROM 1832 TO 1836 R.N. BY CHARLES DARWIN Esq., M.A. F.R.S. Secretatry to the Geol

London Henry Colburn Great Marlborough Street 1840 - THIRD PRINTING 1840 WITH PASTED IN SIGNATURE OF CHARLES DARWIN, SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS, 8vo, approximately 225 x 130 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, 1 original folding map of 2, on the Keeling Islands, laid down on paper, a facsimile of the missing map loosely laid in at rear, 4 text illustrations, pages: title page, (lacks prelims i-vi, (i-iv) cancels, (v-vi), discarded, see Freeman page 34), [vii]- xiv, Preface and Contents, [1]-630 last page blank, followed by Index to Mr Darwin's Journal, 609-615, no half-title, rebound in modern paper boards, printed label to spine, new endpapers, marbled edges. Map has slight damage to folds and a small repair to inner margin on blank side (see attached image), pale stain affecting the bottom of 5 pages, occasional brown spots to margins, pale browning to pages next to map, and next to missing map, otherwise a good clean tight copy. THE PASTED IN SIGNATURE OF CHARLES DARWIN IS PART OF A LETTER WITH THE ADDRESS OF "SPRING GARDENS". The Charles Darwin signature is from a clipped letter, "I remain yours- Charles Darwin, Wednesday, Spring Gardens". Darwin arrived in London (after his father said he would support him) and went to the Whitehall Admiralty building to speak with Robert FitzRoy in Captain Beaufort's office. FitzRoy told Darwin that the other person he had offered the job to had just turned it down and he wanted to know if Darwin was still interested in the position. He enthusiastically accepted the offer and FitzRoy outlined the details of the voyage. Darwin learned that the sail date had been postponed until 10 October. Later in the afternoon Darwin took up residence at 17 Spring Gardens, just around the corner from Whitehall. The next few days were spent shopping in London and discussing the details of the voyage with FitzRoy. At the bottom of the clipped signature in the neat hand of a previous owner or recipient "Charles, son of R.W. Dawson MD-Shrewsbury- Sec Geol. Soc." See: R. B. Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin, page 31-39. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE BY CLICKING ON THE IMAGE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

He kupu wakatupato, ...[Paiha (New Zealand), Mission Press], 1842. 8vo. Never sewn, stitched or bound.

Hocken, p. 518; Williams 84. First edition, printed in New Zealand in the Maori language, of the anti-Catholic missionary William Colenso's account of the order of service followed by the Anglican Bishop of London for the reception of three Roman Catholic priests. Although the pamphlet was printed by the press that the author established, he had largely turned it over to others in 1840. When the press printed his own works, however, it is possible that he once again played a larger role. With a small hole repaired, slightly tattered at the edges and minor foxing and stains, but still in good condition.

      - WorldCat (2 copies). Rare first Russian edition, of Guizot's essay, "Etude historique sur Washington", included in his multi-volume Vie, correspondance et écrits de Washington (1840) and later published in various forms in both French and English. This essay was Guizot's most original contribution to the larger work, much of the rest being a French translation of selections from Jared Sparks, Life and writings of George Washington (1834-1837). Sparks does not appear to have been translated into Russian, so this may have been the only extensive biography of Washington available in Russian. Guizot (1787-1874) was a leading French historian and Prime Minister. He expressed the greatest admiration for Washington, but ironically, his ban of the so-called Paris banquets celebrating Washington's birthday helped to spark the Revolution that led to his fall. With ink and embossed stamps. Somewhat foxed, mainly in the first and last leaves, unobtrusive water stain in lower outside corner but still in good condition. Binding with minor wear at the extremities but otherwise very good. Probably the only detailed account of George Washington available in Russian at the time. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SPORTING EXCURSIONS IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS INCLUDING A JOURNEY TO THE COLUMBIA RIVER AND A VISIT TO THE SANDWICH ISLANDS, CHILI, &C

London: Henry Colburn, 1840. First English Edition. This account records the experiences of the first two scientists to journey to Oregon Territory, naturalist Thomas Nuttall and our author, ornithologist John Kirk Townsend (whose name is misspelled Townshend on the title page here). Townsend (1809-51) and Nuttall (1786-1859) travelled from St. Louis to Fort Vancouver with fur trader Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth, recording species of birds and mammals, and collecting specimens that would eventually be used by John James Audubon as subjects for his "Birds of America." In addition to their scientific pursuits, the two men also got to know a number of the Native tribes in the region, and Townsend's reports on those encounters provide much of this work's interest. They sailed from Oregon to Hawaii, spending a winter there and collecting additional specimens. Nuttall returned to Philadelphia with their specimens, while Townsend stayed in Fort Vancouver as medical officer for another year. He eventually returned home via Hawaii, Tahiti, Chile, and Cape Horn. Although he planned to prepare his own work on American ornithology, the appearance of the octavo edition of Audubon's masterpiece dominated the market and dashed those hopes. He served as a curator at the Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia and at the National Institute for the Promotion of Science in D.C. His early death was brought on by his chronic exposure to arsenic in the course of preserving his specimens.. 195 x 118 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 5/8"). Two volumes. First English Edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked preserving original backstrip, raised bands, spine panels with gilt floral spray, two black morocco labels, top edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece in each volume. Howes T-319; Sabin 96383; Graff 4174; Wagner-Camp 79:2. Leather a bit rubbed and stained, slightly cocked spines, front boards tending to splay, frontispieces a little foxed, one quire in volume II somewhat loose, a couple of pages with chips from rough opening, but a nice set despite its imperfections, clean and fresh internally. This account records the experiences of the first two scientists to journey to Oregon Territory, naturalist Thomas Nuttall and our author, ornithologist John Kirk Townsend (whose name is misspelled Townshend on the title page here).         IMAYOH HYAKUNIN ISSHU AZUMA NISHIKI: MODERN BROCADE PICTURESOF POEMS FROM A HUND

[Nagoya, n.d. ca.1840-50, Eirakuya].Stitched color pictorial covers, large size 18 x 25.5 cm. by 5 cm. thick, 6 color, pagination: 22+20+50+50+3 of double-leaved pages, profuse bw woodcut illustrated, Japanese text, small stains to leading, top & upper edges of spine, does not affect text or illustrations. * CONDITION: Covers are color woodblock printed, with a red cloth label in Kanji with Furigana sounds written, usual minor edge wear, but is solidly sewn and bound. The above mentioned stains are a pale indigo blue, but do not encroach into much of the text nor illustrations. By and large a fairly good copy of an obscure title. * THE CONTENTS: The first section consists of six Nishiki-e, or "Brocade Pictures" in full color. These are actually a two panel prints that equal one art work on facing pages. The first shows a woman holding a bamboo broom, with a crane in the background and water with small sail boats. She is accompanied on the left side with a man holding a bamboo rake, these are symbols of the New Year season and good luck. At the foreground in front of the man is a turtle with a long tail, the "Longevity Turtle." * The next two pages show five Japanese women dressed in elaborate Kimono, painting pictures. * The last two pages show women playing the game of "Go," on the left panel, and a girl on the right side reads here music from a book and plays the Koto [Japanese harp]. They are also dressed in elaborate Kimono, the season is spring with a cherry tree in full bloom. * The next section shows the pages divided into thirds, the upper third shows elaborate Origami folding for New Years decorations, the central or illustrated portion shows groups of women celebrating the seasons, while the lower portion is the text, which consists of some 19 pages. This contains some classic stories, pictures of poem writing and court figures in their royal attire. * Next section is varied, showing a group of "Jizo" or Buddhist icons in stone, with their appropriate I-Ching characters, at the bottom. The center shows a story about a famous woman poet, while the upper third shows a different story about court poets. * The next pagination beginning at page one through fifty is the classic Imayoh Hyakunin Isshu Azuma story of poets and their poems. The pages are divided into two sections the top one-third shows the graphic part of the story with some detailed texts, while the lower two-thirds show the text. From the third page, the lower section also contains stately court figures in their formal court attire, nicely interspersed with the lovely calligraphic text. This is done in the typical 17th century drawing style of the classic artists of the period. Through page 50, this part of the work shows an illustration on each page in the lower two-thirds of the work. From page 14, the upper section shows some part of the TALE OF GENJI story, with the usual I-Ching characters and the matching text. The TALE OF GENJI was the first novel ever written by a woman, so it remains the "First" in history, written by Lady Murasaki Shikibu. Please inquire with us for other copies of the TALE OF GENJI. * Essentially the book consists of several titles, all concerning poems, famous poets and the common thread that binds all, the Buddhist theme. The work is profusely illustrated in black and white throughout. We would estimate well over one-hundred illustrations in all, plus the six frontispieces in full color. * THE POETS: This work covers the work of Jite Tenno, Kakinomotono Hiromaro, Yamabeno Akahito, Onono Komachi, Tenji Tenno and other exceptionally famous Emperors and other female poets. * CONDITION: The original covers are color woodblock printed, with a red cloth label in both Kanji with Furigana sounds written, usual minor edge wear, but is solidly sewn and bound. The above mentioned stains are a pale indigo blue, but do not encroach into much of the text nor illustrations. By and large a fairly good copy of an obscure title. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: Not in: a. K.         THE WORKS OF BEAUMONT AND FLETCHER WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY GEORGE DARLEY

London: Edward Moxon, 1840. Two volumes. Polished tan calf, spines gilt, with gilt labels (small repairs), t.e.g. by Sotheran. Gift inscription (to Emily Vine from her mother dated 1857 on title of each volume); extremities, raised bands and edges rubbed; covers a little worn and soiled, otherwise a good set. From the collection of William E. Self, with his book label in each volume. An excellent association copy, with a presentation inscription on the half-title in volume one: "J.A. Overs / From / Charles Dickens [paraph] / 1st November 1840." John A. Overs (1808-1844), a London cabinet-maker by training, educated himself and pursued his interests in writing. Dickens became his most important literary friend, providing comments on his stories and poems, introducing him to newspaper editors and offering financial assistance when Overs became ill. Overs first wrote to Dickens in January 1839 hoping to have some poetry placed in Bentley's MISCELLANY, and Dickens recommended several pieces to his successor as editor. "Perhaps more importantly, however, Dickens advised Overs on the publication of his EVENINGS OF A WORKING MAN (1844), and wrote the preface to the work. . . . In his preface Dickens is careful to emphasize Overs's autonomy, stating that although he had given advice to the author on this collection of short pieces, he 'never altered them, otherwise than by recommending condensation now and then,' and assuring the reader that the volume's sketches represented Overs's 'genuine work, as they have been his sober and rational amusement'" - DNB. The two men remained close until Overs's death in 1844: "When poor Overs was dying he suddenly asked for a pen and ink and some paper, and made up a little parcel for me which it was his last conscious act to direct. She [Amelia Overs] told me this and gave it me. I opened it last night. It was a copy of his little book in which he had written my name, 'With his devotion.' I thought it simple and affecting of the poor fellow" (Dickens to John Forster [17 Dec. 1844] in the LETTERS OF CHARLES DICKENS, Pilgrim Edition, 4,240).

Alaric at Rome. A Prize Poem, Recited in Rugby School, June XII, MDCCCXL

Combe and Crossley, Rugby 1840 - First edition. 8vo. Arnold's Debut, Inscribed. The first edition of Matthew Arnold's first work, his Rugby School prize poem on the conquest of Rome by the Visigoth Alaric I in 410 AD. Unusual for a prize poem, the work was published anonymously and was not identified as Arnold's until Edmund Gosse made the attribution in 1888. One of the rarest literary debuts, of which Wise noted "Alaric at Rome holds a high place in the rank of modern poetical rarities." This copy inscribed on the front wrapper, "E. Armitage Esqr. from the Author." The recipient, Edward Armitage, was a fellow pupil at Rugby. Arnold had entered Rugby in 1837, where his father was headmaster. The only other copy known to bear an inscription by Arnold ("Miss Ward, 1840") is at the Morgan Library. It is difficult to take an accurate census of copies, as Wise muddied the waters with his facsimile - which he later passed off as genuine. OCLC locates 15 copies and ABPC lists two copies - one in 1979 at Christie's London, and the present copy. Ashley I, p. 8: "holds a high place in the rank of modern poetical rarities"; Hayward 255; Smart, p. 1. Provenance: Dr. J.B. Clemens of New Jersey (two typed letters to Clemens, as prospective purchaser of the book, from Luthur S. Livingston of Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, dated 17 August and 7 September, 1905, loosely inserted); sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 8 January 1945, lot 57 for $400; exhibited: Grolier Club (1950s exhibition card describing it as "the only presentation copy known"); sold, Halsted B. Vander Poel (Christie's, London March 3, 2004, lot 127) Publisher's printed pink wrappers. Faint vertical crease at center, light edgewear. In custom red morocco pull-off case [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Fleurs fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ile de Java.Brussels, Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt, [1880]. Folio. With 40 full-page chromolithographed plates after original watercolours by the author, each plate accompanied by one text leaf, with descriptions in English and French. Original publisher's red half cloth, printed boards.

GFB, p. 60; Plesch, p. 349; Stafleu & Cowan 3025; Stiftung für Botanik 363; Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora 87; cf. Nissen, BBI 931 (first edition). Magnificent colour-plate book by the Belgian artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885) showing Javanese fruits and flowers, beautifully chromolithographed by P. de Pannemaeker. Shortly after having followed her husband to Java, Indonesia, Hoola van Nooten became a widow at 21, leaving her in debt and with a family to support. To make a living, she took to painting the flora of the island. Her extraordinary sketches show the exuberant colour display of tropical fruits and flowers, ideally suited to the new technique of chromolithography. "Van Nooten was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill" (Tomasi). Binding restored, new endpapers, some browning. A good copy of an impressive book.

Hildesheim, ?in Commission der Gerstenbergschen Buchhandlung? 1840. - The two rare published text parts of a larger intended monograph on the mediaeval cathedral of Hildesheim in North Germany. Curiously, part 1, which would no doubt have discussed the cathedral?s history and architecture, was never published, but part 2, which discusses a wide range of art treasures kept in the cathedral, is extremely detailed and scholarly, and provides much incidental information about the cathedral?s past. Part 3 provides biographical accounts of St.Bernward and St.Godehard, successive Bishops of Hildesheim in the first half of the eleventh century. A folio plate volume, issued to accompany part 2, is absent (as often). 8vo. 2 vols (all published). (2) + xiv + 272pp ; (8) + 124pp. Contemporary full panelled red morocco, gilt, all edges gilt.         [Prominent Ottoman and entourage boarding boats before the Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque].[Istanbul?, ca. 1830/50?]. Watercolour drawing on wove paper (29.5 x 45 cm) with highlights in shellac and a thin black border. Mounted on a larger sheet of paper in a passe-partout.

For the King family: Debrett's Peerage 1840, p. 423 & 1861, p. 338; (Debrett's) Baronetage LXXV (1893), p. 127. A lively scene on the Tophane Quay in Istanbul, with the background dominated by the dome and minaret of the 1580 Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque. The tip of a second minaret, perhaps from a different mosque, is visible in the distance. On the quay, an opulently dressed black-bearded Ottoman (a high official in the Emperor's court or a wealthy merchant?) stands in the centre of the scene with his entourage. He wears red robes trimmed with gold and with black decorations, a white turban around a red fez, and a gold waistband with the hilts of two guns sticking out, and carries a walking stick in his left hand. His entourage includes a white-bearded Islamic holy man(?) with a green turban around a red fez, a Greek or Armenian man in a black hat, a dark-skinned woman in green robes, holding a bundle, and several other men, women and children. They appear to be preparing to depart in the boats that stand ready. Two more dark-skinned women, in white robes with red and blue stripes, follow the party deferentially. Several people appear in the boats in addition to their crews. Four more white-bearded Islamic holy men (each again with a green turban around red fez) sit in one with some women, while two Ottoman infantrymen with bayonets stand in another, one just stepping out. Other parts of the quay show various men busy with their trades or smoking long pipes. From the collection of Hooton Pagnell Hall in Yorkshire, England. With a 1.5 cm tear in the water at the foot of the scene, not approaching the boats, and otherwise in very good condition. A lively and fascinating scene on a quay in Istanbul, with the dome and minaret of Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque prominently shown.

Les Rébus de l'enfance ou Abécédaire en Estampes d'un genre nouveau

Paris: (E. Duverger for) Librairie de l'enfance et de la jeunesse de P. C. Lehuby, 1840. Oblong 12mo (121 x 162 mm). xvi, 64 pp. Engraved title, 13 hand-colored etched plates (or transfer lithographs of etchings) containing 26 illustrations, each pair of scenes within a different whimsical and relevant ornamental border. Various typefaces. Occasional minor staining to text leaves. Publisher's green printed boards (rebacked, somewhat rubbed).*** A slightly off-beat rebus-book for children, with alphabets in large and bold types, syllabaries, and 26 short tales. These stories, for older children who can already read, each provide both a moral lesson and context for the definition of a keyword, which serves as the subject of a rebus, depicted by letters of the alphabet printed below the relevant illustration. Thus two young rascals experiment with a makeshift cannon, with the expected results (burnt hair): the illustration shows the moment of the explosion, and the caption-rebus is "p.t.," for peté (exploded or popped); or a young child sees a hearse, and her father explains the respect due any funeral procession, even that of a stranger: the illustration showing men in mourning carrying a coffin, is captioned "d.c.d." (décédé, deceased). Z is without a rebus, the editors having found themselves at a loss, and the final rebus uses the ampersand (or "et" in French). Four- to six-year olds were different then, if the dialogue is to be believed: one young Ludovic, for example, trying to identify the subject of an engraved memorial portrait held aloft by cherubs, declaims his conclusions: "J'aimerais assez à y reconnaitre les traits du brave et excellent roi Henri IV; il pouvait assez compter sur l'amour de ses sujets pour justifier l'allusion qui me semble fort heureusement exprimée par ces deux amours qui soulèvent le portrait du bon monarque pour le fixer à la colonne de la gloire"... (The rebus is "f.i.j." for effigie.) The publisher's boards contain the date, colophon, and ads for four other Lehuby publications. In 1834 Pierre Charles Lehuby took over the business of Pierre Blanchard, one of the more imaginative and influential children's book publishers of early 19th-century France. OCLC lists two copies, at the BnF and Princeton (in a later binding). Ségolène Le Men, Les abécédaires français illustrés du XIXe siècle, 634. Not in Gumuchian.
