        The Jigama River near Pambula.

Exeter: W.Spreat, c. 1840. Handcoloured lithograph, 165 x 260 mm. A fine Australian view from a series of tinted lithographic plates (published as Sketches in Australia) of Sydney and Harbour areas, mountains and southern coastal regions of New South Wales, "drawn from nature" by Captain Westmacott.Jigama River is now known as Pambula River which is on the South Coast of New South Wales. The river was first explored by Europeans in 1797 when George Bass put in to escape from a gale on his way down the coast. Bass noted the beauty of the place in his diary. The village developed to serve the early settlers in the locality. Some of the earliest European settlers, the Imlay brothers, pioneers and landowners in the district established their station on the banks of the Pambula River in the 1830s.Their land was bought by the Walker brothers in the early 1840s.Little is known of Westmacott, except that he was a captain in the 4th (King's Own) Regiment, and that he spent the early 1840s in Australia. His published views represent the last in the chronology of work by military or naval officers in the romantic landscape tradition of the early 19th century. Fine.

        Costumi della Corte Pontificia

      A. Depolette, Roma - N.d., circa 1840. Large paper version: folio, 34 by 23.5 cm. With 62 hand-colored costume plates, plus engraved title page with hand-colored vignette and dedication page with hand-colored portrait of Pope Pio IX. These images of Vatican dress, both which cover both ecclessiastic and military costume, are generally encountered in a far smaller, leporello format, with also fewer images -- typically thirty plates. In this other guise, the target audience were the many tourists who paid a visit to Rome and were enamored with a pocket souvenir. The diminutive leporello assuredly exudes enormous charm that has not diminished over nearly two centuries, but the images really do not quite match these original Marroni engravings with their excellent detailing and glorious hand-coloring, and we would stress, the coloring is not only brilliant, but also it would appear not to have lost one bit of lustre from the day it was applied to paper. Scuffs to leather. Newer marbled paper pastedown on boards. A small amount of scattered light soiling and/or foxing, mostly in the early leaves, such as there is.         American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River. Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. (Two Volumes) From Drawings by W. H. Bartlett, Engraved in the First Style of the Art, By R. Wallis, J. Cousen, Willmore, Brandard, Adlard, Richardson, &c.

George Virtue, London 1840 - Unique copy with all the plates, including frontis portrait, two half title, and map (of the Northeastern United States), hand-colored by a meticulous contemporary hand, or a total of 120 plates hand-colored that are never in copies known to us colored at all. 4to. 27.5 by 22 cm. iv, 140, iv, 106 pp, with first volume also including the hand-colored frontis portrait of Bartlett, the map, and 66 plates, the second volume, 53 plates. Bartlett (1809-1854) was a renowned English painter or architectural and topographical views and panoramas who did similar books on such countries as Switzerland and Canada, all of which are epitomize the steel engraved view books of the period and are easy to find standard works. In this copy of "American Scenery", there is no question that the hand-coloring greatly enhances the otherwise appealing but unexciting steel engravings, and one can not but think that the plates were intended to be colored so. Some finger soiling to the leaves, including those with the plates, but overall, a clean copy.

London: George Virtue, 1840. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Unique copy with all the plates, including frontis portrait, two half title, and map (of the Northeastern United States), hand-colored by a meticulous contemporary hand, or a total of 120 plates hand-colored that are never in copies known to us colored at all. The binding does have wear, with abrasions to the diced calf, repaired joints, and moderate wear besides. Chipping to the black spine labels.

Album of Sixteen Hand-Colored Aquatint Swiss Views

      H. F. Leuthold; Dikenman., Zurich - N.d., circa 1840. Oblong 4to. 25.5 by 33.5 cm. Views of Rigi, Zurich, Luzerne, the Rhine Falls, Hof Ragaz, Giessbach, Brienz, Interlaken, the Wetterhorn, the Staubach, Thun, and Vevey. The coloring is lush, the detailing, precise, and these plates are very much in the tradition of Lory, in their style and their quality. We believe this was an album that was assembled by a tourist, who would have chosen from a selection at a print shop and arranged, probably there, to have the prints then handsomely bound. Most of the prints were published by Dikenman, with a few by Leuthold. A few abrasions on the red pebbled cloth, which bears an owner's initials and has blindstamped and gilt ruled decoration. Tissue guards within with creases. Some marginal soiling. Pictures themselves are clean and stunning. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Atlas zoologique. Mollusques.

Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1840-[1847]. Folio (33.7 x 25.0 cm). With 79 (of 86) lithographed and mostly hand-coloured plates. In a recent portfolio with paper boards and title on the spine.= A complete set of the scientific results of Alcide d'Orbigny's seven years of travel and exploration in South America is a true rarity; even the individual parts are all very rare because the production of this work, which started two years after his return in 1835, took 15 years to complete. This is the near-complete atlas of the "Mollusques", with plates 1-76, 79-80, lacking only a few plates at the end, viz., 77-78, and 81-85. The final plates are often lacking. Most plates are in very good condition, and extremely well coloured. The numbering of plate 38 corrected to 36; the two different plates 41 corrected to 41a, and 41b (recte 41, 41bis). One plate with small paper loss in the margin. A very good, clean set of plates of this fabulous work. Nissen ZBI, 3021.

        Costumi della Corte Pontificia

Roma: A. Depolette. First Edition Presumed. Quarter Calf. Marbled Boards.. Very Good Plus. N.d., circa 1840.

[SHEET MUSIC] The King of Otaheite's tea party : new comic medley

Sung by Mr. Topliff, in his lectures on the "Rise & progress of music"/ written and arranged by R. Topliff.London : Harry May, [c.1840]. Folio, cover with engraved illustration, blind stamp of Cockram, Music Seller to the Queen, Bristol and contemporary presentation inscription in upper margin, 8 pp of engraved musical notation with lyrics (an arrangement for voice and piano), the sheets a little darkened but a very good copy. 'Some time ago, there liv'd a King of Otaheite, who if he only frown'd, 'tis said, the people all were fill'd with dread, for fear that each should lose a head, by the King of Otaheite. Now this monarch's name was Tantaparan Mesopotamia Koolicaran, and some people call'd him a fine looking man ... His nose was large, so was his mouth; While one eye look'd north, the other look'd south; his face was as large as a big frying pan, such a beautiful monarch was Koolicaran ... "See you get everything fit for my table - human flesh, herbs and rice, ev'rything else that's nice ..."'. This early nineteenth century edition (Cockram was an esteemed music and musical instrument seller of the 1830s and 1840s) is unrecorded in Australian collections. Copies of a later edition published by Brewer in London around 1870 are held in the National Library of Australia and the State Library of New South Wales.

George Whitfield, early Sydney gunsmith and taxidermist : autograph letter, signed, dated 1840

Entire letter addressed to Robert J. Pennent Esqr., Belfast, Ireland, cancelled with oval PAID SHIP LETTER SYDNEY OC 9 1840 in red, and straight-line SHIP LETTER in black; arrival marking BELFAST FE 17 1841; manuscript in ink written in a neat hand on 3 sides of one folded folio sheet of gilt-edged writing paper; address panel on the outer side; original folds; clean and legible. George Whitfiled, a native of Belfast, arrived in Sydney early in 1834. A skilful gunsmith, he first went into partnership with the gunmaker John Samuel Lambard, but by 1839 had opened his own business, G. Whitfield's Gun Manufactory and Repository of Stuffed Birds. Whitfield soon became the largest firearms dealer in the colony; his shop was illustrated in Fowles' Sydney in 1848, and he supplied the guns for Edmund Kennedy's ill-fated Cape York expedition. An account of Whitfield's remarkable life and career in Sydney, which ended with his being shot by a disgruntled employee, may be read in the Australian Dictionary of Biography. George Whitfield's letter was carried on the ship William Wise, which sailed from Sydney on October 11 1840 and arrived at Gravesend on February 13 1841; the letter was delivered in Belfast a mere four days later. He writes to Robert Pennent concerning his own nephew, William John Whitfield, for whom he is arranging a passage on a ship to Sydney. Whitfield has paid £30 to Messrs. Martin and McDowell, which he hopes will enable his nephew to 'come here in respectable stile'. Whitfield continues with news about his own business in Sydney: 'I flatter myself that it will give you pleasure to know that my circumstances are daily improving, so as to exceed my most sanguine expectations, and I am at present Master of the Principal Gun Establishment and Bird Preservatory in N.S. Wales, and from this circumstance I pledge myself that from the arrival of William John Whitfield in this Colony it shall be my most anxious endeavour to make him fit as a Mechanic for that Society in which it will be his priviledge to move, without aspiring to any thing beyond an upright Mechanic, which was his poor Mother's last request of me when dying.' Whitfield then gives Pennent instructions regarding a sum of money he has deposited into a Belfast bank account which is intended 'for the sole benefit of the boy' and is not to be drawn until 'he, William John Whitfield is of age (should it please Almighty God to spare him)'. William John Whitfield (1823 - ?) did indeed help fulfil his mother's dying wish. He came to Sydney in the early 1840s and worked in his uncle's business for over two decades. With George's murder in 1864 he took over the business and ran it until 1866. William also inherited George Whitfield's personal estate.
