Mémoires D'un Maitre D'armes

Brussels: Meline, 1840. First Edition. 2 vols. 1st edition (published by Meline in 16mo.), preceded by a serialization in Revue de Paris, but preceding the other 1840 Brussels editions from Jamar and Hauman, and Meline's later octavo edition, as well as Dumont's 1840-1841 Paris edition (see Munro page 99). Contemporary half calf, contrasting green morocco labels, over pink floral cloth (rubbed in spots), rear inner paper hinges separating in a few places but sound, stamp to rear endpaper of vol. I, else a very good set, attractive and complete with both half-titles. A scarce book. OCLC/World Cat lists 7 copies in libraries worldwide. Alexandre Dumas was an elite swordsman and duelist; his master of arms was Augustin Grisier. Grisier had left France in 1824 seeking glory in St. Petersburg where he had met a young woman who's lover, a Knight in the Emperor's Guard, was naively drafted into the Decembrist Conspiracy, a poorly plotted attempt to remove the Czar (Nicholas I) and replace him with a republic. Back in France Grisier recounted his experiences to Dumas who then wrote this romance, an early attempt by him to meld political collusion, adventure, and romance. Very good.

Autograph letter signed, quoting a Persian fable.

Walnut Hills, Cincinnati: 15 December 1840 - Single bifolium (245 × 195 mm), folded four times for posting, 12 lines written in black ink to front panel with the date "Dec. 15 1840" lightly pencilled to upper outer corner; rear panel verso ink-stamped "Walnut Hills, Dec. 16" and addressed in black ink to Mr Louis Cist, Cincinnati, Ohio, in Stowe's hand, semicircle neatly cut into fore edge, probably where originally attached to red ?wax seal at gutter opposite. Housed in a custom blue half cloth book-form case with marbled sides and backstrip lettered in gilt on front panel. Slightly toned, a few pale marks, old restoration to extremities, some judicious repair along folds. Overall, very good. Beecher Stowe writes to Cincinnati bibliophile Louis (also recorded as Lewis) Cist, quoting an ancient Persian fable from Sir John Malcolm's Sketches of Persia (1827): "While in the bath the other day, a friend put into my hand a bit of scented clay. 'What art thou' said I, in admiration, 'art though musk or ambergris? that thy perfume is so delightful.' It replied 'I am in myself but a lump of mirthless clay, but I have long lived with the rose & the sweet quality of my partner has been breathed into me'". Harriet Beecher moved with her family to the Walnut Hills neighbourhood of Cincinnati in 1832, when she was 21. Cincinnati was then at the forefront of the abolitionist movement. The Beecher family home, now kept as a museum, was where she First began to write, and where she lived until shortly after her marriage to Calvin Ellis Stowe in 1836; the couple later moved to Maine, where Stowe was a university lecturer. Louis Cist was the author of the Cincinnati Miscellany (1845), a work of local history. His collection of autographs was sold at auction in 1886–7. This letter was more recently in the collection of noted Danish-American bibliographer and libarian Jens Christian Bay (1871–1962), with his pencilled ownership inscription to the inside cover of the book-form case, below a typescript mounted label reading "Kongeligt Dansk Hof-Bogbinderi [Royal Danish Bindery,] Elmhurst, Illinois, U.S.A". Bay spent most of his library career in Illinois, First at the University of Chicago, then at the John Crerar Library in that city.

A dynastia e a revolução de setembro ou nova exposição da questão portugueza da successão. Por C.V. e S.C.

Coimbra, Imprensa de Trovão e Compª, 1840. - 8°, original blue printed wrappers (spine slightly chipped, light soiling). Light browning, occasional light foxing. Still, in very good condition. viii, 191 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this bitter criticism of the financial policies adopted in Portugal by the Septembrists. Comparing the shattered Portuguese economy with those of its wealthy European neighbors, the author outlines the causes of the current economic malaise in a lengthy survey of Portugal's recent political history. Particularly worthy of condemnation is the government's recent decision to slash interest rates far below their natural levels. The author advocates the introduction of paper currency and explains how to do so. A dynastia quickly ran afoul of newly strengthened censorship laws: in an important jury trial concerning freedom of the press, continued distribution of the work was permitted because the author was at that time unknown. A printed advertisement on the rear wrapper announces that A dynastia is available by subscription only and promises a second, indexed edition, which never seems to have appeared.Castro e Mendonça (ca. 1791-1860) was born in Coimbra, where he later earned his medical degree. During the 1830s he actively participated in political debate as editor of the periodicals Águia and Industrial civilizador. Later he practiced homeopathic medicine for many years in Mafra.*** Innocêncio II, 347-8. Grande enciclopedia VI, 238. NUC: NBC, MH. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        THE PATHFINDER

Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1840. FIRST EDITION, First Issue (with imprints of Fagan and Collins at center of p. [2]; no copyright notice). This is an attractively bound first printing of the further adventures of Natty Bumppo, the hero of "Last of the Mohicans." The first American writer to gain widespread international recognition, Cooper (1789-1851) is the only author who can justly be compared to Scott in the field of the romantic novel. Although they are chiefly thought of as vehicles for romanticizing the American frontier, Cooper's works are serious explorations of the theme of a "search for enduring moral values amidst incessant change." The present major work is the fourth of Cooper's five famous Leather-stocking novels, all featuring the mythic wilderness hunter Bumppo, "the prototype of a recurrent figure in American fiction: the free, noble, solitary American who denies a safe and conforming life in order to maintain dignity, self-possession, and the natural inner discipline of true democracy." (Day) In this work, Bumppo saves Mabel Dunham, the daughter of an army sergeant at a frontier fort, from the ravages of nature and of lustful men, but when he is encouraged by the sergeant to marry Mabel, he predictably slips away into the wilderness. The aptly decorated binding is unsigned, but is similar to the work done by English emigré binders who came to the U.S. in repsonse to the binding demands of the great book collectors of the Gilded Age.. 180 x 110 mm. (7 x 4 1/8"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION, First Issue (with imprints of Fagan and Collins at center of p. [2]; no copyright notice). Attractive late 19th century scarlet crushed morocco, gilt, covers with gilt-rule frame accentuated with bow-arrow-tomahawk tool at corners, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with bow tool or crossed rifles at center, foliate spray at corners, gilt titling, turn-ins with frame of plain and dotted rules, foliate tool at corners, leather hinges, emerald green watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. BAL 3892. A little soiling to edges of boards, joints and corners lightly rubbed, one rear board with patch of white residue (from leather preservative?), occasional mild foxing, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, in a well-preserved binding. This is an attractively bound first printing of the further adventures of Natty Bumppo, the hero of "Last of the Mohicans." The first American writer to gain widespread international recognition, Cooper (1789-1851) is the only author who can justly be compared to Scott in the field of the romantic novel. The present major work is the fourth of Cooper's five famous Leather-stocking novels, all featuring the mythic wilderness hunter Bumppo, "the prototype of a recurrent figure in American fiction: the free, noble, solitary American who denies a safe and conforming life in order to maintain dignity, self-possession, and the natural inner discipline of true democracy." (Day) In this work, Bumppo saves Mabel Dunham, the daughter of an army sergeant at a frontier fort, from the ravages of nature and of lustful men, but when he is encouraged by the sergeant to marry Mabel, he predictably slips away into the wilderness. The aptly decorated binding is unsigned, but is similar to the work done by English emigré binders who came to the U.S. in repsonse to the binding demands of the great book collectors of the Gilded Age.

Longfellow's friend Cornelius Felton had met Frances Farrer on a lake steamer in Scotland, shortly after her husband's death in March 1853. Plan of the Floating Dry Dock, and Articles of Association of the New York Floating Dry Dock Co., of the City of New York

New York: Alexander S. Gould, 1840. Pamphlet, 8vo, original printed wrappers, large folding plate, 15 pp. Wrappers with a few chips and tears, and partially detached, but still connected, small notation on front wrapper, and short inscription on reverse of front wrapper, normal aging, folding plate shows a little foxing, but in very good shape overall. Very scarce title that presents a plan to build a floating dry dock to be used to repair ships. According to the discussion, the dry dock was to be based on a design by Joseph T. Martin, which he had a patent pending for in Washington. The purpose of this pamphlet was basically to give the reader a feel for the plan and some idea how it would work. The floating dry dock could repair and copper all kinds of ships, and would be made in sections constructed of strong timbers. The folding plate shows a ship on the dry dock, and comments suggest it could raise a vessel that was two thousand tons.
