Probate copy of Commissioner Bigge's will [d. 1843]

York, 1840. Manuscript in ink on parchment, 525 x 690 mm, with probate documents and seal; in fine condition, original folds. Commissioner Bigge and his painting of the native dog of nsw. Original probate copy of Commissioner Bigge's final will of 1840 (made three years before his death), here probated, signed and sealed in York in 1845. An austere and difficult figure, Bigge had died alone in London following an accident at the Grosvenor Hotel; he was buried as his will here shows that he required, 'without ceremony or superfluous expense'. John Thomas Bigge had been one of the most controversial visitors to New South Wales in the early colonial period, effectively bringing down Macquarie's government when he played Sir John Kerr to Macquarie's Whitlam during the colony's greatest and grandest early expansion. Bigge's Commission of Enquiry into the transportation system proved in fact a systematic London-promoted assault on Macquarie's administration of New South Wales that ultimately forced the governor's resignation. Bigge was also sometime Chief Judge of Trinidad as well as Commissioner of Enquiry to the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope. He died a man of some means, making bequests of about twenty-five thousand pounds in cash as well as properties in Ludgate Hill and Little Bridge Street, London. His will shows his connection to an elite band of colonial administrators, with cash bequests to some of his former colleagues including the former governor of Antigua, and one of the judges of Trinidad. To his sister-in-law Mrs Hanway Bigge he leaves 'the Mahogany Press that was made for me in the island of Mauritius'. Of particular interest is his bequest to his friend Lord Colborne of Berkeley Square of a 'picture which I caused to be drawn of the native dog of New South Wales'. Who did he cause to make the picture? And was the specific bequest of a picture of a dingo to be a wry joke from beyond the grave? The dingo had been known in England from the 1790s when Governor Phillip had arranged for a live specimen to be delivered to the Earl of Salisbury at Hatfield House.

The Shooting Party - Ranton Abbey

[London] 1840 - Mixed-method engraving, coloured by hand, by William Henry Simmons. A fine image recalling one of the first great Victorian shooting estates. Ranton Abbey estate in Staffordshire, England, was owned by the Earl of Lichfield. In the early part of the rich 19th-century, landowners vied with each other to create preserves for game, improve their coverts and produce ever large bags at shooting parties. The Earl spent large sums of money on improving his estate and during the 1830s held a series of great shooting parties which made Ranton a centre for Liberal sporting hospitality. Sir Francis Grant often shot with the Earl and the original from which this print is taken still hangs in the present Earl of Lichfield's house at Shugborough. The people pictured include the first Earl of Lichfield, Lord Melbourne, then Prime Minister, Lord Sefton and the Earl of Uxbridge. Sir Francis Grant was largely self-taught, primarily through imitating Velazquez. His early works were primarily to do with fox hunting, but, as demonstrated here, he had an exceptional capacity for portraiture. He painted an equestrian portrait of Lord Melbourne and Queen Victoria and this proved to be the beginning of an enormously successful career painting portraits of most of Britain's most prominent men and women, including the Royal family and several prime ministers, Siltzer p.131.

        Star Spangled Banner

Baltimore Geo. Willig Jr. 1840 - An Early Baltimore Broadside Imprint of "The Star Spangled Banner" [KEY, Francis Scott]. [SMITH, John Stafford, composer]. The Star Spangled Banner. Baltimore: Geo. Willig Jr., [n.d.c.a 1839-1841]. An very early Baltimore imprint of the score of the National Anthem. Two folio leaves, each with printing on recto and verso blank. (13 x 9 3/8 inches; 333 x 238 mm). With an engraved scene below the title of and artillery firing scene with a twelve-star flag and ships in the background. This engraveing as well as the title have been carefully hand-colored in a contemporary hand. Edges of leaves with some professional restoration and some very small chips and creases. A few spots and light toning. Overall a very good copy of this important piece of American history. This Geo. Willig Jr. Imprint is printed from the plates of the John Cole edition of 1825, with the only change being the publisher's name. It even retains the the plate number "152" on both leaves. These editions are Carr-type editions, being they are copies from the Carr "New Edition" of 1821, with the changes that the music is redivided from the original 6/4 into 3/4 time and the flute arrangement has been excluded. Carr being the publisher of the original edition of the "Star Spangled Banner" set to music. (Muller, 7) According to Muller "The knowledge that this edition was published between 1839 ti 1841 may be derived from the following facts. Cole retired from business in 1839, at which time he sold his stock to F.D. Benteen and others. Willig apparently acquired the plates for the "Star Spangled Banner," which he reprinted, retaining the Cole plate number and substituting his own imprint. A copy in the writer's collection with the signature "Catherine Ingersole, October 9th, 1841." serves as evidence that the publication was not issued after 1841." (Muller, 13). As in the Cole edition, the words "was" and "still" are transposed on like six. And the word "Broad" is eliminated in front of "Stripes" on line three. "Francis Scott Key's poem, inspired by the sight of the United States flag flying defiantly over Fort McHenry after the British attack in September 1812, was set to John Stafford Smith's 1770s melody "To Anacreon in Heaven." The tune, originally with words by Ralph Tomlinson, was composed for the Anacreontic Society, a British music club that held its meetings at the Crown and Anchor Tavern in the Strand. Not until 1931 was "The Star Spangled Banner" declared the nation's official anthem by an act of Congress. Note the misspelling of patriotic in the subtitle in this first edition, one of only a handful of surviving copies." (The Morgan Library). BAL 11081 (Section 4, Baltimore reprints). Howes. Muller 13. A very good set.\"The most important book on California during its Mexican regime.\" (Howes, P267).\"This voyage, ostensibly to report on the whale fisheries in the Pacific, was actually primarily political in nature. The presence of the frigate V??nus in ports around the world would be of value to French commerce and diplomacy. After rounding Cape Horn, the expedition made calls up the coast of South America, to Hawaii, Kamchatka, and to California, in order to assist French traders who had been clamoring for support for some time. Du Petit-Thouars\'s account of his stay in California in 1837 is one of the most important and complete records of the Mexican period in California. In 1838m the VÃ?nus made a run for Easter Island, further investigated the coast of South America, then sailed for the Gal·pagos and Marquesas Island, Tahiti, and New Zealand. At Tahiti the expedition forced Queen PomarÃ? to write a letter to the King of France apologizing for mistreatment of French priests, and, further, to pay an indemnity and to salute the French flag. Du Petit-Thouars had also made a treaty with Kamehameha III of Hawaii. After visits to Sydney and Mauritius, the ship sailed home, arriving after a voyage of thirty months. Abel du Petit-Thouars, nephew of the famed French botanist Louis du Petit-Thouars (1758-1831), is credited with bringing the Marquesas under French protection (1842), as well as the Society Islands (1843), and he was made a vice-admiral in 1846. This present set [as this copy] consists of the four volumes if the Relation and the Atlas pittoresque of this voyage, essentially the historical narrative. Another seven volumes of text and three more atlases, by other writers, were published later. These later volumes detailed the scientific observations of the voyage.\" (Hill, 518).         Tales About America and Australia By Peter Parley

Darton & Clark, n.d., but, London 1840 - Small octavo, with frontispiece maps of Australia and America and numerous illustrations;an excellent copy in original striped black and red cloth. Very rare: a history of America and Australia for children by American author Goodrich, under his more famous pen name "Peter Parley", with a charming woodcut vignette of Bungaree making a bow. The work includes a surprisingly detailed account of New South Wales including notes on Tasmania, as well as a significant description of the aborigines. Bungaree, the veteran of both the Investigator and the Mermaid is specifically mentioned, with a long note about his powers of mimickry: 'my friend requested Bungarry to show how governor Macquarrie made a bow. Bungarry happened to be dressed in the old uniform of a military officer, and standing up in the stern of his boat, and taking off his cocked hat, with the requisite punctilio, he made a low formal bow, with all the dignity and grace of a general officer of the old school.' The Ingleton copy, with his bookplate. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sauvage de la Nouvelle-hollande avenant de combattre (Port Jackson)

Paris: Langlume, 1840. Single sheet measuring 305 x 222 mm., wove paper, lithograph, margins a little foxed, very good. Confronting image of a Port Jackson Aborigine, lithographed after a sketch by Jacques Arago, official artist of the expedition commanded by Louis de Freycinet. This portrait is stylistically similar to the work of Arago's predecessor Nicolas Petit, who served as an illustrator on the previous French voyage to Australian waters under Nicolas Baudin. The present portrait is strongly reminiscent of Petit's Aboriginal study titled "Sauvage adulte des environs du port Jackson", (plate 20 in the official Baudin voyage account).

The 14th presidential election of the United States pitted the war hero, Harrison, against the incumbent, Martin van Buren. The Whig, Harrison, won easily, just as he predicted in his letter- ?However... there is no danger. Their whole vote given against me would not change the result [of the election]?. The letter in full reads, My Dear Sir, / I have just returned from a tour of 3 Weeks, & found your letter in which you mention the ?Cold Sweats? you were suffering under from the apprehension of the success of Shannon. I hope that the news of our 18 or 20?000 majority may have relieved you before this reaches you. / My votes will considerably exceed Corwin, unless more of the Abolitionists Vote for him than I at present suppose to have done so. Under any circumstances however (as far as the Abolitionists are co
