He was specifically assigned to observe the anatomy and habits of southern whales, to determine the best way of conducting the sperm whale fishery industry, to investigate the islands of Polynesia, and to collect samples of natural history. The narrative deals mainly with the ecological, historical, and sociological aspects of the Polynesian inhabitants, but the appendix includes a list and illustrations of plants and wildlife encountered in the course of the voyageÓ(Hill).         Geschichte des Pugatschew'schen Aufruhrs. Aus dem Russischen des Alexander Puschkin von H. Brandeis [History of the Pugachev Rebellion; in the original: Istoriia Pugachevskogo bunta]

Stuttgart: Johann Friedrich Cast, 1840. Octavo (19 × 11.5 cm). Publisher's printed green wrappers; XVIII, 258 pp. Light wear to wrapper edges; else about very good; an uncut and unopened copy. First German translation of Pushkin's controversial narrative of the peasant uprising led by the Don Cossack Emelian Ivanovich Pugachev (1742-1775), and almost certainly the first translation of the work into any language other than Russian. Pushkin's lively interest in this popular revolt inspired him to write both his better-known novel 'The Captain's Daughter' (1836) and this non-fiction account of the events. In addition to traveling to the site of the rebellion, Pushkin also studied archival documents related to the life of Pugachev, who was executed in Moscow. In spite of his initial reservations, Tsar Nicholas I granted Pushkin's request to publish the work, but required the title to be changed. It was published in 1834. Pushkin's considerable sympathy towards Pugachev and the impoverished masses scandalized numerous conservative critics. The translator, Hirschmann Brandeis (born 1793), was a German medical doctor and historian of medicine; this appears to be his only published book-length translation. With twenty pages of often highly subjective geographica, historical, and linguistic notes by the author, which form an interesting case study of the early reception of Russian culture in Germany. Among other things, Brandeis discusses the concept of "samozvanets" (usurpator), Russian hospitality, and gives a rather romantic account of the Cossacks. Interestingly, the year 1840 saw a number of translations of Pushkin's poetry and prose into German, a result of the growing interest in the poet after his untimely death. Cat. Russica P-1193. Quite scarce, especially in such excellent condition. In North America, KVK and OCLC only show copies at Columbia, Harvard, and Syracuse.

        The Book of Hardy Flowers

London: R. Groombridge,, [c.1840]. Or, Gardeners' Edition of the Botanic Garden. 4 volumes, quarto (200 x 165 mm). Contemporary half vellum, smooth spine gilt tooled in 5 compartments, red and brown morocco labels, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges. 96 hand-coloured plates engraved by S. Watts after drawings principally by Edward Dalton Smith, displaying 384 flowers. Wear on extremities, slight foxing, light soiling. A very good set. Benjamin Maund (c.1790-1864), botanist and horticulturalist, "sought to share his lifelong passion [for flowers] by producing an interesting and useful publication affordable to everyone. Each monthly issue contained a plate with four engraved and hand-coloured figures of hardy ornamental flowering plants and eight pages of text" (ODNB). He did so through the publication of the Botanic Garden (13 volumes, 1825-1851) and the Botanist (5 volumes, 1836-42). He was driven equally by the opinion that "there was no work which precisely combined accurate scientific instruction with an occasional appeal to the imagination, and to the moral and religious feelings." (Blunt, 266).

Souvenirs d'un Aveugle. Voyage autour du monde... [including as final volume:] Chasses-Drame..

Paris: Gayet et Lebrun, 1840. Some occasional moderate foxing, and a handful of browned plates resulting from differing paper stocks (as often); a very attractive set.. Five volumes, octavo, with a portrait and 59 hand-coloured lithographic plates (a few folding) in the first four volumes and 15 uncoloured plates in the fifth volume; handsome contemporary French quarter olive-green calf, spines with raised bands, ornamented and lettered in gilt. The rare and desirable edition of this classic account of the Freycinet voyage in which the sixty lithographs appear in handsome original colouring. Although this was one of the most frequently published of all nineteenth-century voyage accounts, this third edition is the only version in which the plates appear as this superb suite of coloured lithographs, especially interesting for Western Australia, New South Wales, Hawaii and the islands of Micronesia. Seldom seen on the market, this should be ranked as one of the rarest and most prized Pacific or Australian colour-plate books. This set also includes the scarce fifth supplementary volume devoted to hunting. Entitled Chasses - Drame, this is a selection of further reminiscences that had not appeared in other versions. Complete with 15 (uncoloured) plates, the fifth volume shares the format and design of the first four volumes yet bears a different publisher's imprint (H.-L. Delloye). It contains descriptions of hunting experiences during the voyage, including a 14-page description of a kangaroo hunt in New South Wales. The scarcity of this volume is reflected by the fact it was not described by either of the careful bibliographers Ferguson (on Australia) or Forbes (on Hawaii).Arago was one of four famous brothers, three of whom were respected authors and artists (the fourth was a general). He sailed as artist on Louis de Freycinet's 1817 voyage around the world on the Uranie, and on his return devoted the rest of his life to writing about the voyage, and writing for the theatre. His account of the voyage is very different to the huge official narrative, giving a highly readable and very personal, whimsical and humorous description of events and people. As he noted in the English version (Narrative of a Voyage, 1823) he set out to avoid the conventional forms of the voyage narrative and to ignore the 'eternal repetition of winds, currents, longitude and lattitude'. By the time this version of his book reached the public, its remarkable author and artist had lost his sight: hence the new title used for the work of Souvenirs d'un aveugle. In his moving opening note Arago observes that 'n'avoir rien vu, c'est n'avoir rien à regretter. On ne perd réellement qu'après avoir possédé... et j'ai tant perdu!'.The lovely handcolouring in this edition means that Arago's wonderful depictions of the Pacific are given full rein. Volume III is almost entirely devoted to Hawaii (pp. 97-325), with portraits of Young, and Queen Kanoé, alongside many other scenes: the elaborate and colourful headgear and dress of the Hawaiian warriors is especially beautiful. Of special interest is the large section of the book devoted to Australia (pp. 23-163), with no less than five plates depicting Aborigines of New Holland. These include evocative depictions after Péron (artist for the official Freycinet voyage account), as well as Arago's own images of, for instance, a duel in New South Wales, a fierce Maori warrior bailed up by a dandy with two flint-lock pistols, and an Aboriginal man climbing a tree - to the amazement of a European in candy-stripe pants.Ferguson listed only the Mitchell Library copy (and did not note the additional "Chasses-Drame" volume); Forbes gives a fuller census, but could still only list three more copies.

AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED by the Mexican General who served a 3-day term as interim president of Mexico GABRIEL VALENCIA.

[Mexico], April 19th, 1840., 1840.. - Approximately 25 words penned along the top right half of the 8-3/8 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide stationery of the "Plana Mayor Del Ejercito. Secretaria. Departamento Quarto Mesa 1" [i.e. General Staff Corps. Secretary's Office, 4th Department, 1st Bureau]. An administrative letter addressed to the Director General of the Artillery by Valencia concerning 10 examples for the Vice President of each grade of "historic notice" ["Noticia historica"] for each troop of the infantry and cavalry. Dated on April 19th, 1840 and signed "Gabrl Valencia". Penned along the left and beneath Valencia's note, thus framing his request, is the recipient's response acknowledging the request dated April 23nd. An annotation on the attached facing page lists the locations of 7 of the documents. Folded for mailing and lightly creased with a short tear to the edge of the center fold and a couple of tiny tears to the edge of the attached leaf. Good. A Mexican soldier in the early years of the Republic, Gabriel Valencia (1799-1848) served for 3 days as interim president of Mexico from December 30, 1845 to January 2, 1846. Joining the Spanish colonial army before Mexican independence, Gabriel Valencia transferred allegiances in 1821 to serve in the Mexican army. With friends in the military and government, Valencia wielded power in Mexican political circles forging an uneasy alliance an on-again-off-again relationship with Santa Anna who frequently occupied the presidency during this period. Serving as chief of the general staff during Anastasio Bustamante's third presidency, Valencia helped subdue the revolt in which Bustamante had been briefly captured when the presidential palace fell on July 15, 1840 to soldiers led by rebel Generals Jose Urrea and Valentin Gomez Farias. Bustamente was returned to power but, when Mariano Paredes y Arrilaga, Juan N. Alvarez, and Lopez de Santa Anna rose against the president, General Valencia joined the rebellion and on September 4, 1841 published the "Plan de la Ciudadela" [the Plan of the Citadel]. Bustamente was defeated and the rebel generals appointed Santa Anna as provisional president and called for elections for congress. The Mexican presidency kept changing hands throughout the prior and intervening years, with Santa Anna frequently serving in the post. As part of Santa Anna's army defending Mexico City during the Mexican-American war, Valencia precipitated the battle of Contreras by moving away from his assigned post on the right flank to the town of Contreras four miles down the road. Though he held off an attack by American generals Pillow and Twiggs with reinforcement from Santa Anna's troops, he was left in a less defensible position and the American forces found their way around him the following day, isolating him from the rest of the Mexican army. Valencia's troops fled and, as a consequence, the American forces created a route to the Mexican rear forcing Santa Anna to abandon San Antonio. An uncommon autograph.
