        Whig Congressman Fillmore signed and annotated his copy of President Van Buren?s 1839 State of the Union address which is included in his bound collection of ?Loco Foco Congressional Speeches 1840? ? a reference to the nickname given disparagingly by Whigs to the Democrats who controlled Congress ? Signed four times by Fillmore!

      "Book Signed ?Millard Fillmore / Buffalo? in ink, ?M. Fillmore? in ink, and ?M. Fillmore? in pencil twice. Over 1100 pages, 5.75? x 9?. Comprises over 100 speeches of members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate delivered on the floor of their respective chambers, with printed messages from some members, President Martin Van Buren (State of the Union Address), and the Secretaries of the Treasury and War. The speeches were printed in Washington: Globe Office, 1840. Bound in half calf and marbled papers over boards. Title ?LOCO FOCO / CONGRESSIONAL / SPEECHES? in gilt on black label on spine, dated ?1840.? Foxing on some pages, including the first pages of the individual speeches. Soiling inside covers. Overall, in very good condition.Loco Foco was the name given to a radical wing of the Democratic Party organized in New York City in 1835. Made up primarily of workingmen and reformers, the Locofocos were opposed to state banks, paper money, tariffs, monopolies and any financial policies that favored others. At a Tammany Hall meeting in 1835, the regular Democrats nominated a slate of candidates. When the ?Equal Rights? faction began to nominate their own slate, the gas lights were turned off. The group then lit candles and the new self-igniting friction matches known as locofocos to nominate their candidates. From then on they were known as Locofocos. Active in New York, never a national party, their major issue was the complete separation of government from banking. Their strength was at its peak in 1840 when Congress passed the Independent Treasury Act which President Van Buren signed into law. Both Democrat Van Buren and Whig Fillmore were New Yorkers. By 1840, the Whigs referred to all Democrats as Locofocos; the Democrats were in control of both Houses of Congress. Hence, when Fillmore had his collection of ?Congressional Speeches 1840? bound into this volume, including lengthy speeches for the Independent Treasury Bill, he had ?LOCO FOCO? added to the title. In the elections of 1840, the Whigs took control of the House, the Senate, and the White House.In addition to the inside cover, Fillmore has signed three of the speeches: (1) ?M. Fillmore? in pencil on first page of ?Abolition!! / Infatuation of Federal Whig Leaders of the South.? The letter ?B-? is penned in ink by Fillmore on the pencil signature; creased through signature. (2) ?M. Fillmore? in ink on the first page of ?Speech of Mr. Benton, of Missouri? of January 6, 1840 ?against the constitutionality and expediency of assuming, or providing for the payment of the State debts, or diverting the land revenue to that object."" (3) On the first page of ?Message / from / the President of the United States, / to / the Two Houses of Congress, / at the / Commencement of the First Session / of / the Twenty-Sixth Congress? ?" President Martin Van Buren?s State of the Union address ?" he has signed ?M. Fillmore? in pencil. Dated December 2, 1839, Van Buren?s ?Message? was delivered to the House of Representatives by his private secretary, his son Abraham, at noon on December 24, 1839, and was read to the members present. Congressman Fillmore has handwritten 40 words in reddish-brown pencil in the margins of the 24 page speech. Half of the words are cut off due to the trimming of the pages during binding. The complete or almost complete words written by Fillmore next to related passages of Van Buren?s State of the Union: ?Peace with foreign,? ?Turk[ey],? ?Fina[nce],? ?Treas Note,? ?P emption Law? (Pre emption Law), ?Defen[ce] Army,? ?Florid[a] war,? ?Navy,? ?Departments,? ?Judiciary,? ?Territo[ry],? ?[T]reasury,? ?Foreign governments.? In addition, there are 21 partial words. Fillmore has also underlined a few words in the text. Later in this book, at the conclusion of a January 3, 1840 letter from Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury to the President of the Senate, Vice President Richard M. Johnson, relating to ?fiscal regulations in force? in other nations, Fillmore has written in his reddish-brown pencil: ?See Message p. 13.? On page 13 of his State of the Union, Van Buren refers to ?inquiries made by the Secretary of the Treasury? concluding ?that in twenty-two out of twenty-seven foreign governments ... the public moneys are kept in charge of public officers...?At the head of the first page of ?Speech of Mr. A.C. Hand of New-York ... June 27, 1840 ... on the Independent Treasury Bill,? is penned ?Hon M Filmore,? but this is not in Fillmore?s hand.In addition to Missouri?s Senator Thomas Hart Benton and President Van Buren, there speeches of Kentucky Senator Henry Clay and Pennsylvania Senator James Buchanan among other Senators and Congressmen. Topics in this volume include abolition, the Cumberland Road, a Treaty with the New York Indians, an Independent Treasury Bill, the establishment of a uniform system of bankruptcy, and the New Jersey Contested Election of 1838 (5 Whigs and 5 Democrats claimed 5 New Jersey House seats). Whig Congressman Fillmore was on the House Committee on Elections and was a prominent speaker on the subject; none of Fillmore?s speeches are in this book.Abolition speeches include one by Rep. Sampson H. Butler of South Carolina on a resolution ?to amend the rules relative to the reception and disposal of Abolition Petitions.? It begins, ?Mr. Speaker: It has not been the habit of Southern members, and particularly from South Carolina, to discuss the subject now before the House. Nor, sir, do I intend, on the present occasion, to discuss the constitutional right to hold slaves, the moral influence of slavery, or its expediency ... We could show that slavery was coeval almost with the existence of the human race; that it was fully recognised under the Old and New Testament dispensations; and that to us it is a political blessing, instead of an evil. But, sir, no one has a right to coerce us into these matters, and no power on earth shall move us from our position...?Congressman Fillmore favored the reception of petitions for the abolition of slavery, opposed by the South. Ten years later, as President, Fillmore signed the measures of the Compromise of 1850, including the Fugitive Slave Law which sought to prevent a Civil War. So close had the Union been to dissolution that when Congress passed the Compromise bills, a spontaneous celebration broke out in Washington. The Marine Band led a large parade of citizens to the lodgings of the legislators involved in crafting the Compromise which, unfortunately only delayed the war for ten years."

        Pl. 271 Red-headed Woodpecker The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories

      New York & Philadelphia:: Audubon, J. J. & Chevalier, J.B.,, 1840-44.. The First Royal Octavo. Matted in Ivory Rag Board . Fine condition with bright original hand-coloring/. A fine original hand-colored lithograph on paper. Sheet size: 6.5 x 10.25 inches. Drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon, FRS, FLS and lithographed, printed and colored by JT Bowen, Philadelphia from The First Royal Octavo Edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Includes the text from Audubon's Ornithological Biography. The Royal Octavo Edition of The Birds of America represents John James Audubon's desire to create a democratic (affordable) work based his magnum opus; the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. Satisfied with his research, as well as his portrayals of North America's native and distinct bird species, J.J. Audubon here rendered a miniature yet unique version of The Birds of America.As is the case with prolific artists, Audubon continued to improve upon a body of work which was viewed as perfection. During the mid-19th century, there were no photomechanical means of reproduction, every composition was then redrawn by hand, with the aid of the Camera Lucida. For this Royal Octavo Edition Audubon and his assistants translated the 435 compositions of the Double Elephant Folio edition into 500 unique compositions of individual species. Previously documented groups of heretofore unrelated birds were now separated and divided according to species, and portrayed either on a new botanical perch or within a renewed landscape. Unlike the life-sized portraits of the Double Elephant Folio edition each bird was now sized to scale on the octavo-sized plate; approximately 6.5 x 10.25 inches. With this slight alteration, Audubon created a perfected composition, and thus offered a charming vignette view of the bird, or family of birds in its natural setting. For the Royal Octavo Edition, Audubon enlisted America's premier lithographers, JT Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia and Endicott in New York to produce the work. Every composition was drawn on a limestone tablet, inked, printed and then hand-colored with watercolor. In this format Audubon presented the undocumented birds discovered during his explorations of the American West, but not previously included in the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. As with the folio edition, the Royal Octavo Edition was sold by subscription. One hundred individual packets of five hand-colored lithographs and accompanying text; Audubon's Ornithological Biography, was sent to the subscriber. It was issued the first and fifteenth of each month for four subsequent years. The pagination of the Royal Octavo Edition was organized to be bound in seven volumes. This successful and popular work of American ornithology was produced in an eventual eight editions, the final edition of which was issued in 1870 by George Lockwood, New York. (Wood, Casey. An Introduction to the Literature of Vertebrate Literature. London: Oxford University Press, 1931. Tyler, Ron. Audubon's Great National Work. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1993. )

        Delineations of Cutaneous Diseases exhibiting the characteristic appearances of the principal genera and species comprised in the classification of the late Dr. Willan;

      . and completing the series of engravings begun by that author. - New Edition, London, H.G. Bohn, 1840, Kl. Folio, (8), 72 n.n. Bl. Tafelbeschreibung, 72 handcolor. Kupfertafeln in Punktiermanier, Halbledereinband der Zeit; feines Exemplar.. THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN DERMATOLOGY. - Titelauflage der Ersten Ausgabe. - Schönes Exemplar des berühmten Bateman/Willanschen Hautatlas! - Thomas Bateman aus Yorkshire war Schüler und Nachfolger von Willan an der öffentlichen Krankenanstalt in der Careystraße und an der 'Fewer Institution'. Bateman, die Hauptautorität auf dem Gebiet der Dermatologie im 19. Jahrhundert, hat die Systematik der Hautkrankheiten von Plenck und Willan weiterentwickelt. Er geht von 8 Formen von Hautausschlägen aus: "Papulae, Squamae, Exanthemata, Bullae, Pustulae, Vesiculae, Tubercula und Macula". Diese Grundtypen Hautveränderungen, später Effloreszenzen genannt, wurden in den folgenden zwei Jahrunderten bis heute immer wieder neu aufgegriffen, neu variiert, definiert und präzisiert. Richter hat in seiner Geschichte der Dermatologie diese Entwicklung der Systematik exakt zusammengestellt. - Ein großer Teil der Tafeln entstammt dem nie vollständig erschienenen Buch von Willan mit seinen 33 Tafeln, von denen manche verbessert, manche von Bateman neu entworfen wurden. Die ungemein feinen, handcolorierten 72 Farbkupferstiche erheben dieses Werk zu einem der schönsten Atlanten der medizinischen Literatur und sind noch heute eine Zierde für jede Dermatologische Bibliothek und sind somit der erste Atlas der Hautkrankheiten im englischen Sprachraum. - Willan's morphologic system of classifying skin diseases, left only half finished at his death, was completed by his student Thomas Bateman, to whom is owed much of the credit for its dissemination and rapid acceptance. "Among the new plates, most of which are noticeably superior to the Willan originals, was the first illustration of molluscum contagiosum, which disease ... Bateman had described." "The 'Delineations..' brought the grand of Willan as close to a state of completion as it ever was to attain in England." - Crissey & Parish; Ehring; Schönfeld; Richter; Norman.

      1840 - at the first anniversary meeting of the 'Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade, and for the Civilization of Africa', saying that he has "been induced to preside at the Meeting of this Society from a Conviction of its paramount Importance to the great Interests of Humanity and Justice. I deeply regret that the benevolent and persevering exertions to abolish that atrocious Traffic in human Beings, at once the desolation of Africa and the blackest stain upon civilized Europe have not as yet led to any satisfactory conclusion . Let us therefore trust that Providence will prosper our Exertions in so holy a cause and that under the auspices of our Queen and her Government we may . be rewarded by the accomplishment of the great & humane object, for . which we have this day met", 2 sides 4to. and conjugate blank, descriptive note in another hand at head ". the first meeting at which he presided in this Country", [Exeter Hall, Strand, London, 1st June outer margin frayed with short tear touching three letters, top inner corner neatly removed The 'Times' devoted a whole page and more to the meeting, at which Sir Robert Peel and Lord Ashley (Lord Shaftesbury) were among the other speakers. Following 'the public announcement that his Royal Highness Prince Albert, who a few days ago accepted the office of President of this society would take the chair . the demand for tickets was unparalleled, and we understand that on Friday and Saturday last premiums were offered for them . His Royal Highness, who seemed to feel most sensibly the truly English and enthusiastic reception . proceeded with great distinctness, and with a very slight foreign accent, to open the business of the day'. Albert's mention of the Queen was followed by 'cheering for some minutes' and the speech itself by 'loud and long-continued cheers' ('Times', 2nd June 1840). 'On this occasion he wrote his speech in German, translated it, and learnt it off by heart . The Queen complained that their visit to Cherbourg in 1858 was overshadowed by the Prince's attacks of nerves over his speech!' (Hermione Hobhouse, 'Prince Albert', 1983).

Nikolas Iwanowitsch Pirogoff (1810-1881), Einleitung - - *"The appearance of E. Mukhin's Beginnings of Orthopedic Science (published 1806) initiated the development of orthopedic surgery in Russia. N. I. Pirogov's treatise on tenotomy of the Achilles tendon (written 1840) was the first scientific work in Russian on orthopedics. N. Ellinskii (1834) published a manual of desmotomy, and N. I. Studenskii prepared his Course in Orthopedics (published 1885). In 1839 the Russian physician I. V. Rklitskii performed the first subperiosteal resection of a bone. As early as 1791,1. P. Kulibin constructed a hinged-frame prosthesis for leg and thigh amputees; better prostheses of this type were invented in the 1830's and described in 1855 by R. Chernosvitov. .cf. Carl Adolph von Basedow's (1799-1854) accurate description for four cases in which he described exophthalmos, goitre and palpitation let to the phrase "Merseburg triad", associating these conditions with the name of his own town. He also mentioned emaciation, excessive perspiration, and nervousness as additional symptoms and anticipated later methods of treatment by his advocacy of mineral waters containing iodide and bromide of sodium." - Garrison & Morton No.3816

- "The significance of Henle's book lies in its long opening essay 'Von den Miasmen und Contagien,' in which Henle formulated, on the basis of deductive reasoning, his conviction that living organisms were the cause of contagious and infectious diseases. Drawing upon a wide body of work performed by other researchers on the origin of infectious diseases, such as Bassi's recent demonstration of the parasitical nature of muscardine disease of silkworms, Henle argued that infectious agents had to be organic in nature, since they appeared to multiply from the moment of entering the body (a statement supported by the fact that a certain period of incubation usually precedes the outbreak of disease), and only organic life has the property of growth. The fact that infectious agents could be destroyed by heat and disinfectants also suggested their animate nature. Henle assumed that each infectious disease had its own etiology, but realized that such views would be difficult to prove; he therefore proposed that an agent constantly found in association with a particular disease be isolated and tested in its isolated state to see whether it could produce the disease. 'This approach to the proof of the germ theory Henle communicated to his pupil Robert Koch and was, forty years later, to become one of the cornerstones of classical bacteriology under the name of "Koch's postulates" ' Foster - "He laid down postulates on the aetiological relation of microbes to disease which became fundamentals of bacteriology.."         Master Humphrey’s clock

      With illustrations By George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Chapman and Hall, 186, Strand, 1840-40-41. 3 Vols., super roy.8vo, gathered in sixes; half-titles not called for; frontispiece with tissue guard and numerous engravings on text-paper in each volume; pp.[vi (excluding frontispiece)]+306; vi (including frontispiece)+306; vi (including frontispiece)+426; original vertically ribbed cloth (volumes one and two dark reddish purple narrow-ribbed cloth [28 ribs per inch], volume three lighter brownish-purple bold ribbed cloth [24 ribs per inch]), sides ruled and blocked blind, front cover blocked with clock gilt (the hands showing the volume number), spine elaborately blocked and lettered gilt; volume one with sprinkled burnished edges and end-papers faced café au lait, volumes two and three with ‘hairline’ marbled edges and end-papers. Barely noticeable restoration to cloth of spine in volume one (looks like a faint string-mark and a quarter inch of the gilt design is slightly rubbed), tissue guard to frontispiece lacking, and a little scattered light foxing; spine and edges of covers faded a little in volume three; otherwise a very nice, bright, set. The illustrations consist in fact of 130 woodcuts and twenty-five initials by Hablot Browne, thirty-nine woodcuts by George Cattermole, and one each by S. Williams and Daniel Maclise. There are several variants and possible combinations of variants of the cloth, edges, and end-papers with this title, which are liable to turn up in almost any mix. This is explained not only by the fact that the work appeared first in weekly numbers, then in monthly parts, for which publisher’s cases could be purchased on the completion of each volume, the sheets either to be returned to the publisher for binding or to be bound locally, but also by the fact of the cases remaining on sale for this purpose for a considerable period, and of the book also being issued by the publisher in bound volumes as soon as each volume was complete, and then as sets after the completion of the issue of volume three. It may be stated with more or less certainty that copies with ‘hairline’ marbled edges and end-papers, being too commonly met with to be the freak of some provincial binder, must at some point have been bound up by the publisher, as no such uniformity of marbling could otherwise have been achieved. The book is also seen, however, with café au lait faced end-papers (as in the present volume one), green-faced end-papers, pale yellow coated end-papers, and, rarely, end-papers with other forms of marbling. The last of these is probably provincial, but the rest are common enough for their period to offer no evidence of their origin. Eckel, pp.67-70, noting no variants; not in Sadleir, this being the only 8vo fiction in cloth lacking from his collection; Wolff, 1804, recording a copy with end-papers faced café au lait. In this copy p.[iii], l.31 has the spelling ‘favorite’, possibly as always. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

        Voyages of the Dutch Brig of War Dourga, Through the Southern and Little-Known Parts of the Moluccan Archipelago, and along the previously unknown southern coast of New Guinea, Performed during the years 1825 & 1826

      London: James Madden and Co, 1840. Octavo, two maps; moderate offsetting affects the title-page, otherwise a very nice copy in nineteenth century polished full black calf (joints expertly repaired retaining original backstrip). Tribal cultures of the Moluccas. A last gasp of Dutch interest in the seas off the northern coast of Australia, translated and published by George Windsor Earl, (?1813-1865) an important figure in the repeated attempts to settle the north coasts of Australia. Kolff's book includes two good maps of coastal Australia and the islands to the north. 'In 1824 small British settlements were formed at Melville Island and at Raffles Bay, with the object of opening up trade with the Arru (Aroe) Islands. The vessels which went out with this object in view were seized by the natives and their crews massacred. The Dutch government then decided to investigate the locality, resulting in this voyage. Kolff wrote of explorations made in the Molucca and Java Seas to Timor, the Serawatti Islands, Lakor Island, the Arru Islands, the Tanimbar Islands, and New Guinea. The first edition, in Dutch, was published in 1828' (Hill). Although written with the expected reservations of a Dutch naval officer, Kolff's account nonetheless describes indigenous island cultures of the Moluccas in some detail, recording life-world's now long since past.
