Includes 13 maps and plans (some very faded) including 7 folding plates. Quoted from Société littéraire et historique de Québec relating to these works: "Three volumes of Transactions were issued First in the years 1829, 1831, and 1837 respectively. In 1838 the first part of the series of Historical Documents appeared, called "Mémoires sur le Canada depuis 1749 jusqu'à 1760". This manuscript was communicated to the Society by Colonel Christie, the author was supposed to have been M. de Vauclain, a naval officer in the French service in 1759. The following remarkable circumstances concerning a copy of it, is thus related by Francis Parkman, the Historian: "The remarkable anonymous work printed by the Historical Society of Quebec under the title 'Mémoires sur le Canada depuis 1749 jusqu'à 1760, is full of curious matter concerning Bigot and his associates, which squares well with other evidence. A manuscript which seems to be the original draft of this valuable document was preserved at the Bastille, and, with other papers, was thrown into the street when that castle was destroyed. They were gathered up, and afterwards bought by a Russian named Dubrowski, who carried them to St. Petersburg.[2] Lord Dufferin, when Minister there, procured a copy of the manuscript in question, which is now in the keeping of Abbé H. Verreau at Montreal, to whose kindness I owe the opportunity of examining it. In substance it differs little from the printed work, though the language and the arrangement often vary from it. The author, whoever he may have been, was deeply versed in Canadian affairs of the time, and though often caustic, is generally trust-worthy". It was reprinted by the Society in 1873. In 1840 the second part of this series was published called "Collection de mémoires et de " relations sur l'histoire ancienne...

Master Humphrey's Clock. With Illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Brown.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-41 - 3 volumes, octavo (246 × 167mm). Early 20th-century black half morocco, tan spines with titles and decoration in gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, front edges untrimmed. Extremities lightly rubbed, small mark to front edge of first volume, very occasional minor foxing but an excellent set, finely bound. 3 frontispieces, 170 plates, 25 figure initials, profusely extra-illustrated with inserted plates from later editions. First edition in book form of Dickens's experiment, unique in his canon, of publishing two novels together, The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Both were republished as separate novels on the same day as the third volume here; this format has primacy. This particular copy benefits greatly from lavish illustration and an especially stylish binding: a fine addition to any Dickens set. Smith 6. [Attributes: First Edition]

Pl. 7. Red-tailed Buzzard (Hawk) The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories

New York & Philadelphia:: Audubon, J. J. & Chevalier, J.B.,, 1840-44.. First Royal Octavo. Matted in Ivory Rag Board . Very Good condition with bright original hand-coloring. Minor stains to edge of image./ . A fine original hand-colored lithograph on paper. Sheet size: 6.5 x 10.25 inches. Drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon, FRS, FLS and lithographed, printed and colored by JT Bowen, Philadelphia from The First Royal Octavo Edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Includes the text from Audubon's Ornithological Biography. The Royal Octavo Edition of The Birds of America represents John James Audubon's desire to create a democratic (affordable) work based his magnum opus; the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. Satisfied with his research, as well as his portrayals of North America's native and distinct bird species, J.J. Audubon here rendered a miniature yet unique version of The Birds of America. As is the case with prolific artists, Audubon continued to improve upon a body of work which was viewed as perfection. During the mid-19th century, there were no photomechanical means of reproduction, every composition was then redrawn by hand, with the aid of the Camera Lucida. For this Royal Octavo Edition Audubon and his assistants translated the 435 compositions of the Double Elephant Folio edition into 500 unique compositions of individual species. Previously documented groups of heretofore unrelated birds were now separated and divided according to species, and portrayed either on a new botanical perch or within a renewed landscape. Unlike the life-sized portraits of the Double Elephant Folio edition each bird was now sized to scale on the octavo-sized plate; approximately 6.5 x 10.25 inches. With this slight alteration, Audubon created a perfected composition, and thus offered a charming vignette view of the bird, or family of birds in its natural setting. For the Royal Octavo Edition, Audubon enlisted America's premier lithographers, JT Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia and Endicott in New York to produce the work. Every composition was drawn on a limestone tablet, inked, printed and then hand-colored with watercolor. In this format Audubon presented the undocumented birds discovered during his explorations of the American West, but not previously included in the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. As with the folio edition, the Royal Octavo Edition was sold by subscription. One hundred individual packets of five hand-colored lithographs and accompanying text; Audubon's Ornithological Biography, was sent to the subscriber. It was issued the first and fifteenth of each month for four subsequent years. The pagination of the Royal Octavo Edition was organized to be bound in seven volumes. This successful and popular work of American ornithology was produced in an eventual eight editions, the final edition of which was issued in 1870 by George Lockwood, New York. (Wood, Casey. An Introduction to the Literature of Vertebrate Literature. London: Oxford University Press, 1931. Tyler, Ron. Audubon's Great National Work. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1993. )

Geschichte des osmanischen Reiches in Europa (7 Bände & Registerband).

Hamburg, Perthes, 1840/63..

Doch schon bald geriet Delaroche in Vergessenheit.

Atlantic Voyage - Burning of the "Poland"

Boston, 1840. Boston, 1840. Manuscript account, 38 pages, of the fateful voyage of packet ship 'Poland' which caught fire on 16 May on route from New York to Le Havre in France, her passengers being rescued two days later by Captain J.B. Ingersoll with the Clifton. 8vo. journal by W. B. Clarke & Carruth of Boston, black leather binding, measuring approximately 13,5 x 19 x 1 cm. Penned and signed by Elise R. Tyson (daughter of a China Trade merchant), as narrated to her by one of the surviving passengers, Mr. J.H. Buckingham of the Boston Courier. Some wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally near fine. This journal comprises a personal and very detailed account of the final fated voyage of a packet ship that was brought down by a lightning induced fire about 25 miles south of Nantucket Shoals. From the beginning of the journey, to the devastating storm and subsequent fire to the cotton in the cargo hold, measures taken by crew and passengers for survival, the struggles and the collaborative efforts, the slowly passing and uncertain hours are recounted in detail until the final rescue. The man whose story is told was one of the few who remained on the vessel after most were placed on longboats. Not knowing if he would survive at all, his observations are detailed, compassionate and calm, his recollection vivid and sincere. The firsthand narrator of this account, and survivor of a frightful conflagration at sea is Mr. J.H. Buckingham, a descendent of Thomas Tinker, one of the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower, his father being Hon. Joseph Tinker Buckingham (1771-1861), politician, journalist and founder of the Boston Courier in 1824. J.H. Buckingham is also associated with the Boston Courier, for many years serving his father's enterprise as editor, publisher, and reporter. Before this voyage he had just resigned as publisher of the Boston Courier in 1939, but would return as a reporter shortly thereafter. In July 1847 he made a stage-coach trip to Chicago and throughout Illinois, as a delegate to the River and Harbor Convention and as a reporter for his father's paper, accompanying none other than (later President) Abraham Lincoln. The writer appears to be Elizabeth (Elise) Russell Tyson, daughter of George Tyson, a railroad official and former merchant in the China trade and Sarah (Anthony) Tyson. She lived with her family at 314 Dartmouth Street in Boston, and in 1915 married attorney and fox hunting aficionado George D. Vaughan. 'Poland,' an American built packet ship laden with a cargo of flour and cotton was headed into the Atlantic when she came ablaze in a lightning storm and met her demise. On 11 May 1840 she left New York with a total of 63 persons on board, 24 being cabin passengers. On the 16th she was struck by lightning, a disastrous event which resulted in a fire being sparked onboard, creating a desperate situation which, just in time, ended in a most fortuitous rescue. On the 18th, the Boston built 'Clifton' commanded by Captain J. B. Ingersoll, bound from Liverpool to New York with two hundred and fifty steerage passengers, came upon the Poland with her passengers sequestered to the vessel's bow. She took all persons onboard, along with any salvageable provisions, until the Captain deemed it unsafe to continue. At the time of the last load being removed, Poland's decks had become too hot to stand upon. The deeply grateful group watched the Poland burned into the sea, knowing that they had so narrowly escaped the same end. The loss of property to the Poland was estimated at $150,000. The captain, crew and all passengers were saved - within only hours of the ship's sinking. A gripping, eloquently stated firsthand recollection by a shipwreck survivor on the great Atlantic Cotton Route. . Very Good.
