        Casuarius Bennetti [Bennett's Cassowary (whole)].

Original hand-coloured lithograph. Dimensions: 370 by 545mm. (14.50 by 21.25 inches). From the "Birds of Australia". JOHN GOULD 1804 - 1881 John Gould is widely considered the grearest and most ambitious of all Victorian ornithologists, combining both artistic skill and beauty and anatomical accuracy. Following in the great tradition of Natural History illustrators, such as Barraband and Audubon, Gould enlisted the services of some of the most notable ornithological artists, including Edward Lea, Joseph Wolf and his own wife Elizabeth to compile the most outstanding and comprehensive bodies of work in this field. Comprising of eighteen major works he illustrated the birds of the world, from Asia, New Guinea, Europe, and Great Britain to the Families of Toucans, Trogons and Hummingbirds. Perhaps the most important and valuable of his works is the "Birds of Australia", published in London 1840 - 48, with a supplement issued 1851 - 69, from which this work is taken. A contemporary viewer said of this work "Great as is the excellence of Mr Gould's former publications, there can be no doubt that the present work exceeds them all, both in an artistic and scientific point of view. Whether the dignified repose of the Eagle, the pert Malurus, the restless Parrakeet, or the lean and anxoius Wader, he is equally successful in his efforts". Indeed still today the work is noted as his most accomplished, inparticular the plates depicting parrots and cockatoos have propelled this work into becoming the most valuable of Gould's publictions. Aside from its value it is the most complete and comprehensive ornithological work on Australia ever completed, an incredible feat considering the continent had only been discovered seventy years previously. It was a direct result of the labours of Gould and his assistants, that well over three hundred new species were added to the existing list of birds know to inhabit Australia.

Pl. 437 Roseate Tern The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories

New York & Philadelphia:: Audubon, J. J. & Chevalier, J.B.,, 1840-44.. First Royal Octavo. Matted in Ivory Rag Board . Fine condition with bright original hand-coloring/ . A fine original hand-colored lithograph on paper. Sheet size: 6.5 x 10.25 inches. Drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon, FRS, FLS and lithographed, printed and colored by JT Bowen, Philadelphia from The First Royal Octavo Edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Includes the text from Audubon's Ornithological Biography. The Royal Octavo Edition of The Birds of America represents John James Audubon's desire to create a democratic (affordable) work based his magnum opus; the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. Satisfied with his research, as well as his portrayals of North America's native and distinct bird species, J.J. Audubon here rendered a miniature yet unique version of The Birds of America. As is the case with prolific artists, Audubon continued to improve upon a body of work which was viewed as perfection. During the mid-19th century, there were no photomechanical means of reproduction, every composition was then redrawn by hand, with the aid of the Camera Lucida. For this Royal Octavo Edition Audubon and his assistants translated the 435 compositions of the Double Elephant Folio edition into 500 unique compositions of individual species. Previously documented groups of heretofore unrelated birds were now separated and divided according to species, and portrayed either on a new botanical perch or within a renewed landscape. Unlike the life-sized portraits of the Double Elephant Folio edition each bird was now sized to scale on the octavo-sized plate; approximately 6.5 x 10.25 inches. With this slight alteration, Audubon created a perfected composition, and thus offered a charming vignette view of the bird, or family of birds in its natural setting. For the Royal Octavo Edition, Audubon enlisted America's premier lithographers, JT Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia and Endicott in New York to produce the work. Every composition was drawn on a limestone tablet, inked, printed and then hand-colored with watercolor. In this format Audubon presented the undocumented birds discovered during his explorations of the American West, but not previously included in the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. As with the folio edition, the Royal Octavo Edition was sold by subscription. One hundred individual packets of five hand-colored lithographs and accompanying text; Audubon's Ornithological Biography, was sent to the subscriber. It was issued the first and fifteenth of each month for four subsequent years. The pagination of the Royal Octavo Edition was organized to be bound in seven volumes. This successful and popular work of American ornithology was produced in an eventual eight editions, the final edition of which was issued in 1870 by George Lockwood, New York. (Wood, Casey. An Introduction to the Literature of Vertebrate Literature. London: Oxford University Press, 1931. Tyler, Ron. Audubon's Great National Work. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1993. )

The Doctrine of the Will, Determined by an Appeal to Consciousness

New York - Wiley and Putnam, 1840 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce first edition of this interesting philosophical work. Henry Philip Tappan (April 18, 1805 November 15, 1881) was an American philosopher, educator and academic administrator. He is officially considered the first president of the University of Michigan. A pioneer in the transformation of American university curricula, he was instrumental in fashioning the University of Michigan as a prototype for American research universities, and has been called the John the Baptist of the age of the American university. Tappan embarked on writing a series of philosophical treatises that began to influence thinking in Europe. He toured Europe between 1849 and 1851 and became increasingly convinced of the superiority of the German model (or Prussian model, as it was known at the time) of public education, in which a complete system of primary schools, secondary schools, and a university are all administered by the state and supported with tax dollars. Condition: In a blindstamped cloth binding. Externally worn, front board detached, rear starting, backstrip missing. First few pages detached but present with the frontboard. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean, just a few spots, heavier spotting to one or two pages, a few marginal tidemarks. Marginal pencil annotations throughout, not affecting the text.         Biedermeier Kunstbillet. Basket with flowers in many colours, with text 'Mit Blumen will ich Dir Den Lebensweg bestreuen Und alle meine Tage In Liebe nur Dir weihen.'

      - (Wien, ca. 1840). Magnificent hand-made decorated card: collage of a painting in gouache on white silk within a gold-embossed paper border; when folded back the printed text underneath can be viewed, which is pasted on white silk-gauze; surrounded by a frame of silver dentelles and gold embossed paper. 92 x 117 mm.*Magnificent specimen of this typical Viennese art-product. This kind of greeting cards, all unique pieces, where made as gifts for friends and lovers. From ca. 1815 until 1840 the engraver Joseph Endletsberger and his circle in Vienna, produced this kind of beautiful greeting cards, birthday cards, new-year's cards. These Biedermeier Kunstbillets are known as the aristocrats of the congratulation card. At the time of their production, they were already very expensive, 2 to 5 guilders a piece, which was then a lot of money. As they are made of very fragile material, well preserved cards have become very rare nowadays. Cf. Pazaurek, Biedermeier-Wünsche. - Very well preserved.[(5676)] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Tales

Derby - Richardson and Son/London - James Burns, 1840 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A mysterious little book into which are bound a collection of several moral and catholic tales for children, some unauthored, and some attributed to Christopher Schmid and Maria Edgeworth. Contains The Black Lady (Anon), The Adopted Son (Anon), The Usher's Horse: or Injustice Rewarded (Anon), The Chapel of the Forest (Christopher Schmid), The Robin Redbreast (Christopher Schmid), The Hop Blossoms (Christopher Schmid), The Seven Corporal Works of Mercy and Corpus Christi Afternoon (Anon), Little Snowdrop, the Unbaptised One (Anon), Simple Susan from The Parent's Assistantby Maria Edgeworth, Hans the Miser with Perrin and Lucette, the Envious Girl Reformed, Divine Providence and the Farm and the Presbytery (Anon), and the Rose Bush (Christopher Schmid). Some illustrated titles. Some title pages state: 'published for the Catholic Book Society'. Maria Edgeworth (17681849), novelist and educationist. Maria Edgeworth is unrivalled among Irish women as an intellectual, working both as a literary writer and (in the broad sense) as an educationist. Her practice of textual allusion was at once dense and deft, and her reading exceptionally broad. Patronage (1814), her longest and most complex novel, draws on a wide range of sources, including seventeenth-century English political intrigue and the philosophical quest for a universal language. The list of her publications testifies to almost uninterrupted endeavour over a quarter of a century, followed by a period (1818 onwards) in which she oversaw two multi-volume collections of her work, and later re-engaged with fiction. The Parent's Assistant was the first evidence of her concern to write for children, and further stories for the young were published in her Early Lessons in 1801. DNBCondition: In a half calf binding. Externally rubbed. The front joint is starting, the hinge slightly strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are slightly age toned and dusted but otherwise generally clean, with slight damp staining to the first two pages. The title page and possibly more are missing. Copperplate ink signature to title. Overall: FAIR..

Kakabrka' or Grand Falls on the Kamuntiqua river, Lake Superior, N.America

1840 - Watercolour view of Kakabeka Falls (Ontario) over pencil, on Whatman Turkey Mill wove paper, inscribed in pencil beneath the image. Excellent condition. Image size: 11 x 15 1/2 inches. A fine original watercolour of the spectacular scenery bordering Lake Superior This is a very fine early watercolour of a great natural wonder, likely painted by one of the several traveling English artists who captured the natural majesty of the Canadian wilderness in the early to mid-nineteenth-century. Exceptionally, it survives in pristine condition, its virtuous use of colour capturing a scene that is at the same time rugged, yet sublime. Here, Kakabeka Falls is captured from an oblique angle from a southeast vantage point. Kakabeka Falls, at a height of 132 ft. is the tallest waterfall in the Lake Superior region, located just west of the modern city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. It marks the place where the Kaministiquia River cascades over the edge of the Canadian Shield. Its name derives from the Ojibway word 'Gakaabikaa", appropriately meaning "waterfall over a cliff". From the late seventeenth-century, French couriers du bois, who had established a nearby fort, used the Kaministiquia as their primary route to into the heart of North America, necessitating a portage around the falls. This same route experienced renewed popularity with the establishment of the Northwest Company's base at Fort William in 1803. In the nineteenth-century Kakabeka Falls became a favourite subject of traveling artists. Around 1825 George Back painted a watercolor painting of the falls from almost the identical vantage point as the present watercolour, and Frances Anne Hopkins painting The Red River Expedition at Kakabeka Falls (1877) is one of her most important works. Probably the most popular image of the falls is by Lucius O'Brien, an 1882 painting now in the National Gallery of Canada.

Original watercolour, captioned "Whitsunday Island a specimen of the general character of new coral formations"

Australia circa, 1840. Watercolour, 196 x 284 mm. on wove paper sheet watermarked 1830 measuring 300 x 372 mm., signed by the artist lower right, some fading (as usual) to manuscript inscription and signature yet in excellent overall condition, mounted. Fine watercolour of a coral atoll in the Great Barrier Reef. Charles Ferdinand Hamilton Smith (1809-1862) was an artist, natural historian and army officer who arrived in Sydney as a lieutenant in the British Army in the convict ship Westmoreland in July 1835. While in Australia he worked as an artist and natural history collector (in his diary he recorded being given a "book on taxidermy, with a view to encouraging me to collect specimens of natural history in N.S. Wales" by John Gray of the British Museum. He spent the rest of his life in Australia on the property Engheim on the Hunter River. This fine watercolour depicts a coral atoll, Whitsunday Island, in the Barrier Reef. The Barrier Reef is the largest system of coral reefs, mangrove and estuarine environments in the world and this watercolour shows that Smith was well up to date and actively involved with this foremost natural history research. The study of the formation of coral reefs was up to the early 1830s a scientific puzzle and the first definitive study was The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs by Charles Darwin published in 1842. Darwin was in regular communication with the scientist Charles Lyell whose book Principles of Geology published in 1830 had included a brief outline of the idea that atolls were based on volcanic craters. This fine and fresh painting is a wonderful example of a colonial artist being part of a larger scientific community studying coral reef formation in the very early days of such geological exploration. A few of Smith's watercolours of the western districts of New South Wales, probably painted in the 1840s, were sold at Christie's, Sydney, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His work, however, rarely appears on the market.
