Master Humphrey's Clock. With illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1840–41 - 3 volumes, tall octavo. Original purplish vertical-ribbed cloth, gilt lettered and decorated spines, covers elaborately blindstamped, front covers with gilt clock motif, marbled edges and endpapers. Contemporary armorial bookplates of George Ebenezer Foster (1811-1870), magistrate and banker, and 20th century bookplates of Peter M. Jeavons. Spines lightly sunned and rolled, a couple of old pale stains to the front cover of volume III, title page of volume I creased, scattered foxing, a few gatherings a little proud, nevertheless a very good set in the original cloth. Full-page wood-engraved frontispieces by Ebenezer Landells after H. K. Browne and illustrations throughout, 25 figurative initials. First edition in book form of what Gordon Ray describes as "the pinnacle of Dickensian Gothic". He goes on to note that Phiz (H. K. Browne) "is in excellent form" and that George Cattermole's "wonderful clutter of antiquarian or architectural detail is well suited to Dickens's chosen subjects". Master Humphrey was a publishing experiment on Dickens's part, unique in his canon, of issuing two novels together: The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Eckel p. 67 ff; Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790-1914, 60; Smith I, 6. [Attributes: First Edition]

Opere. Due volumi. Vol I: I promessi sposi. Storia della colonna infame. Vol II: Opere varie: Inni. Tragedie. Prose varie. Edizione riveduta dall'autore. Il vol. I è privo di frontespizio.

Guglielmini e Redaelli?, 1840? - 1845. Due volumi. In-4° (cm 28,5x20), pp. 864 + 861. Piccolo forellino all'occhiello. Annotazioni marginali a penna a p. 46.

- Firenze, presso spirito Batelli, 1840. 2 vols. Royal-8vo (222 x 142mm). pp. 798, with 72 fine hand-coloured plates. Contemporary half calf, spine with gilt lines and lettering. One of the very attractive Italian flower books."L'Antotrofia' reveals Piccioli to be both a scientist and a man of letters. The work opens with an Italian translation of an idyll written by the Swiss poet Salomon Gessner (1730-88) and dedicated to the Greek myth of Lica, the first gardener. To his detailed descriptions of cultivation and propagation techniques, plant diseases and insect pests, Picciolo adds verses by classical and contemporary poets, ranging from Sappho and Metastasio to Lamartine and Gessner. Piccioli's 'L'Antotrofia' provides an interesting example of symbolism of flowers in an Italian vein.' (L.T. Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora p. 369). The charming plates are after drawings by Piccioli. PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND STATUARY OF THE GOVERNMENT: THE PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURAL ORNAMENTS OF THE CAPITOL OF THE UNITED STATES, AT THE CITY OF WASHINGTON

Washington: Lithographed and published by P. Haas, 1840. [4],44,[2]pp. plus twenty-two lithographic plates (three folding). Printed and lithographic titlepages. 16mo. Original roan, title amid laurel wreath design stamped in gilt on front cover, rebacked in matching style. Corners repaired. Foxing throughout, as well as an old tideline in upper portion of plates and text leaves. Good. This copy bears a gift inscription on the front free endpaper to Senator William E. Borah of Idaho. Borah, a Republican, served in the United States Senate from 1907 to 1940, ran for president in 1936, and was a leading "isolationist" on foreign policy matters. An enchanting illustrated guide to the art and architecture of the United States Capitol, with lithographic plates by the artist, Augustus Kollner, and the publisher and lithographer, P. Haas. Each of the images is accompanied by explanatory text. Included are views of the Capitol, the "Presidents House," the Treasury, the Post Office, and the Patent Office as well as interior scenes of the Capitol and the Senate Chamber. Representations of statuary found in various Washington buildings include Thomas Jefferson, Pocahontas and Capt. John Smith, Daniel Boone, Penn's Treaty, and the Pilgrims at Plymouth. The folding plans are diagrams of the floor of the Senate and the floor of the House of Representatives, and the folding plates are of Greenough's statue of Washington and an interior view of the House of Representatives. This is the second issue of Kollner's guide, with a title dated 1840, after the first issue of 1839. Only the title date is changed. Kollner was a prolific and long-lived Philadelphia artist (he lived until 1908) who also produced a larger series of views of American cities between 1848 and 1851. This book is some of Kollner's earliest work, as well as being one of the earliest series of views of Washington, and one of the earliest publications with representations of the art decorating the U.S. Capitol. Tome premier (-deuxieme)

Bailli?re, Paris 1840 - 2 voll. in 8, pp. XII + 436; (4) + 528. Marm. Topographical Map Of The City and County Of New - York, and the adjacent Country One of the most beautiful 19th century maps of New York

New York: J. H. Colton, 1840. unbound. Folding map. Dissected into 27 parts and backed with original linen. Measures 30 inches x 68 3/4 inches. This magnificent map drawn by David H. Burr and published by J. H. Colton is known to be one of the most beautiful 19th century maps of New York. Focusing on the topography, it covers the entire island of Manhattan and includes parts of Brooklyn and Jersey City. This particular map is the second state of the first edition and was issued in 1841 with 1840 depicted in the title.

With relief shown by hachure, the map notes the grid structure up to 155th, clearly based on John Randel's survey and the Commissioner's Plan of 1811. Although Bloomingdale Road (modern day Broadway) north of 23rd st. was ghosted in on the Commissioner's Plan, it was officially restored to 42nd street in 1838 and reappears here, straighten up to 42nd street, north of which it continues to wanders. Sections of the road would continue to be straightened until it was fully restored in 1865.

The map beautifully depicts the topography, more prominent in the northern regions (as the southern sections were more developed at the time) and notes squares, parks, important buildings, streams, valleys, forts, woods, trees, marshes, and swamps, revealing the unspoiled terrain of northern Manhattan.

One of the many striking features of the map is the incredibly elaborate border with beautifully illustrated vignettes featuring important buildings, landmarks, scenes etc. These include City Hall, Wall Street, Columbia College, Custom House, Female Orphan Asylum, St. Luke's Church, Navy Yard, New York as seen from Governor's Island, etc.

Two large views appear along the bottom border. The first is a view of Broadway from the Park, which features the newly built Astor House (completed in 1836). The second view titled "Nieuw Amsterdam, 1659" features one of the earliest views of the city from the famous Jansson-Visscher Map. This was also one of the very few views to show St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Barclay Street.

This particular issue is the second state of the map (The first state was published in 1836) and reveals minor differences from the first. Madison Square is labeled, as are Livingston Place and Rutherford Place on the west and east of Stuyvesant Square. The vignette in the border depicting the "Female Orphan Asylum" was labeled the 'Female Lunatic Asylum" in the first state. The first state also does not includes the landfill in the Hudson River from Hammond Street to harlem Cove in Manhattanville.

The map is engraved by S. Stiles and Co. and "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1836 by J.H. Colton & Co. in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York." In good condition with overall toning. Dissected into 27 parts and backed with original linen. Fold lines show some wear. Some damp stains and foxing along bottom fold, especially near right border and title and along the top border. Accompanied by, but detached from original cover.

Overall, this is an incredible vision of Manhattan, now one of the densest cities in the world, from a time when it was a verdant island with hills and flowing streams.

The Colton family was one the most prolific and successful publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. J.H. Colton (1800-1893) founded his business in NYC in 1831.

David H. Burr (1803-1875) served as Topographer to the United States Post Office and Geographer to the House of Representatives and was widely known for his accuracy and attention to detail. His "Universal Atlas" was the first to map each of the United States individually.
