The Souk of al-Ghuri. "The Ghooreeyeh." On stone by J.C. Bourne Drawn by O.B.Carter Archtecht. Published for the Proprietors by Hodgson & Greaves.1840

Middle East: London Tilt and Bogue 1840. Tinted lithograph of the The Souk of al-Ghuri ,Cairo from Robert Hay's "Illustrations of Cairo..." The view shows the interior of the Souk, with many merchants displaying their wares. The Souk was redeveloped by Sultan al Ghuri Egypt's last important Mamluk sultan (1501-1516) who destroyed the original khan built by al-Khalili and rebuilt it in 1511 as a major commercial district, however the name remains even today as the Khan el-Khalili . The plates of the streets within Cairo are often the only records of the city at that time, as many of the buildings were demolished in the succeeding years. Robert Hay much less famous than his fellow countryman and contemporary David Roberts nevertheless made the greater contribution to Egyptian Archaeology with his two expeditions of 1824-8 & 1829-34. General light toning, darker at edges of page; lithographers pinholes to corners of image, as usual. Robert Hay, 1799-1863 Egyptologist, first visited Egypt in 1818 whilst serving in the Royal Navy. Inspired by the work of Giovanni Battista Belzoni, and others he would return in 1824 and spend most of the next 10 years in the country, heading 2 expeditions with the intention of recording detailed accounts of as many Pharonic sites as possible; Robert Hay was typical of the new generation of Egyptologists, interested in recording rather than hoarding unlike the previous generation's dealer-collectors . As heir to the Earl of Tweeddale he was wealthy enough to employ a number of artists to join him in his expeditions, intended to be the greatest since that of Napolean. He collected together, artists, architects, topographical draughtsmen and antiquarians. These young men : Joseph Banoni, Francis Arundale, James Halburton {known as Burton], Charles Laver, Edward Lane, John Wilkinson GB Greenhough ,John Wilkinson, George Hoskins and Frederick Catherwood all of whom would become famous in later years, laid down the basis of Egyptian archaeology (Incidents of Travel in Egypt, Arabia Petræa, and the Holy Land John Lloyd Stephens, Courier Corporation, 1996 ) The intention was to record all the ruins, murals & inscriptions and make detailed ground plans of the sites. They were greatly assisted by the use of the camera lucida, a means of reflecting an image on to paper which Frederick Catherwood in particular among Hay's party used to great effect. Considering the scope of the expeditions it is surprising that Hay's only published work is the Illustrations of Cairo... Drawn on Stone by J. C. Bourne, under the superintendence of Owen B. Carter, architect. London Tilt and Bogne, 1840. [the text would appear the following year] Unfortunately Hay was a procrastinator, having dithered about selling his plaster casts to the British Museum until they began to lose interest and the more he procrastinated, the less the museum was interested. In the end, after years of expensive storage, the large heads and two of the other casts went to the British Museum with the single stipulation that a present of £100 be given to Bonomi for all the work he had done. Hay received nothing "The book project followed a similar course. Lane, a disciplined artist and writer, was clearly the man for the job. But Hay wanted to dedicate the book to Lane, so he asked Charles Carter to do the drawings and James Burton, who was even less decisive than Hay, to do the writing. Thanks largely to Lane's prodding, the book was finally published in November 1840, beautifully printed, lavishly bound—and expensive. The public passed it by, and Hay lost almost £2000–the equivalent of £95,000 ($150,000) today.... Thoroughly annoyed over the huge sums he had lost and uncertain why his efforts had failed so miserably, Hay sank into the life of a country gentleman, his interest in Egypt displaced by the time-consuming management of a large estate. From time to time he would write to the faithful Bonomi how much he missed their days in Egypt and lamenting his own lack of discipline..... ..Hay's legacy was not what he might have wished. The great head from Abu Simbel, which was far too large to exhibit successfully, was cut up—"not judiciously"—and stored in pieces in the British Museum, along with most of the casts that the Museum had acquired in 1840. The antiquities Hay had collected while in Egypt fared somewhat better. After his death, the British Museum purchased 529 items from his estate for £1000. The remaining objects in Hay's collection were placed on public display and then sold to a Boston banker and collector whose son later bequeathed them to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where they formed the basis of that museum's Egyptological collection. The drawings remained for some time in the Hay estate, but eventually went to the British Library (then part of the British Museum), where they are now housed in 49 portfolios." [ The Lost Portfolios of Robert Hay by Jane Waldron Grutz from Saudi Aramco World March/April 2003 ] Owen Browne Carter (1806–1859) was an English architect,In about 1829–30 he went to Egypt in the company of Robert Hay. He spent some time in Cairo, where he made a large number of architectural and topographical drawings, about fifty of which are in collection of the British Museum.         Milano

Riferimeti: Arrigoni, "Milano nelle vecchie stampe", vol. I, p. 16, n° 56

Middle East: London Tilt and Bogue 1840. Tinted lithograph of the Sabil wa Kuttab Tusun Pasha, Cairo from Robert Hay's "Illustrations of Cairo..." The view shows the ornate fountain erected to honour the deceased son of Muhammad 'Ali, Ahmad Tusun, a two-story kuttab flanks the sabil on either side. The image shows the busy life of the city. The plates of the streets within Cairo are often the only records of the city at that time, as many of the buildings were demolished in the succeeding years. Schlesinger absorbed Delahante in 1840. La Vestale, to a libretto by Etienne de Jouy, was first performed at the Paris Opéra on December 15, 1807. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin... [La Vestale], mostly composed in 1805 but repeatedly revised, was performed only after the intervention of the Empress Josephine. However, it turned out to be not only the most successful work of Spontini's unsteady career but also the one serious French opera to achieve lasting and international fame between 1789 and 1826. The first performance... was a great success; the work had its 100th performance at the Opéra in 1816 and its 200th in 1830. In the years that followed, it was performed in most foreign opera houses... before interest in it waned after 1850." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online.

Contemporary calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine; extremities slightly rubbed. "?????? ??????????????? ??????????????? ????????????? ?? ?????????, ??????? ? ?????????? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ?.?.???????" (? ?????????? and ?.? ??????????, ???????????? ??????????? ? ????? ?????????? ?????????, in ?????? - ???????????? ???????? ?? ?????????? «???????????????? ??????? ??????????, 2010). First French edition. Rare on the market: we could not trace any copy at auction in the last 35 years. It contains the same illustrations and map (re-engraved) as the first edition, published in Russian in only 400 copies just 8 years earlier. One of the founders of the Russian Geographical Society, Liovshin (1798-1879) based his work on the material collected during his service at the Orenburg Border Commission in 1820-22. The author was much praised for his ability to combine scientific research with knowledge acquired directly from interaction with local people. Shokan Valikhanov (1835-65), another great Kazakh historian whose monument stands today in front of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences in Almaty, called him the "Herodot of the Kazakh steppes". Liovshin's groundbreaking work, first published partially by Pushkin himself, covers the geography, history and ethnicity of nowadays Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tadjikistan. Thanks to the extent of the work, its detailed researches and its structured method, it became the first comprehensive overview of the socio-political and ethnic Kazakh system. Liovshin extensively analysed most of the available Russian and foreign sources containing ethno-historical records of Kazakhs, and used in his work only information the validity of which he could prove. The large folding Carte du pays occupé par les Kirghiz-Kazaks ou Kirghiz-Kaïssaks et du Turkestan is a rare depiction of land included between, in the North, Orenburg and Omsk and, in the South Bukhara and Samarkand. Still in Soviet times, researchers such as the Kazakh ethnologist Edige Masanov (1926-65) considered it to be the most fundamental source for research of the Kazakh ethnography and in many cases the only one.         Map of Asia

James Wyld, London 1840 - This well designed map by James Wyld covers the entire continent of Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to New Guinea. Notes the political divisions circa 1840 with outline color and labels important cities, towns, rivers, islands, mountains, deserts, seas, lakes, and other topographical features. The Great Wall of China and the Grand Canal are both identified, so is the seat of the Mogul Empire of Genghis Khan at Karakarin. The disputed waters between Korea and Japan are here named in favor of Korea (Gulf of Corea). The map presents the region during "The Great Game", the political and diplomatic confrontation between Russia and the British Empire over the regions of Central and Southern Asia and Afghanistan in particular. The main concern for Russia was British inroads into Central Asia, while Britain feared Russia's threat to add India to its vast Empire. The result was the First Anglo-Afghan War on 1838 which Britain lost. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold and minor foxing. James Wyld Senior (1790-1836) was a distinguished British mapmaker known for producing maps and globes. He served as Geographer to George IV and William IV. This lovely map of is a fine example of his work. Map. Engraving with original color outline. Image measures 20.5" x 25.5".

        Camp of the Gros Ventres

1840. First Edition . BODMER, Karl. Camp of the Gros Ventres of the Prairies on the Upper Missouri. Paris: Arthus Bertrand (Imprimé de Bougeard), [1840]. Original hand-colored aquatint, plate impression measures 17 by 13 1/2 inches; window matted, entire piece measures 23 by 20 inches. $1800.Fine hand-colored folio plate (number 38), first state, from the magnificent Atlas volume for Maximilian Wied-Neuwied's Travels in the Interior of North America (1839-43).MaximilianÂ’s monumental work was originally published in German (1839-41); a French translation followed in 1840-43 and an English translation in 1843. A picture-atlas of eighty-one plates (48 folios and 33 “vignettes”) after paintings by Karl Bodmer was issued in Paris, and accompanied all three of these editions. This Atlas is now regarded as one of the most comprehensive and memorable visual surveys of the western territories ever produced. Unlike some other painters of the American West, Bodmer tried not to romanticize his subjects, but show them as they really were. “BodmerÂ’s watercolors are perhaps the most accurate works of art ever made of American Indians during the 19th century. His attention in detail to beadwork, personal symbols, clothing, accoutrements, and facial expression make these portraits precious documents of a lost world” (Robert Moore). This superb hand-colored aquatint depicts the events of August 5th, 1833, when Prince MaximilianÂ’s 60-foot keelboat Flora anchored opposite a Gros Ventre encampment at the mouth of the Judith River. The camp contained over 200 tipis and the boat was soon surrounded by visitors looking to trade. MaximilianÂ’s party was far outnumbered and the situation became somewhat tense. In his journal entry for that day, the Prince noted, “If it was their intention to treat us in a hostile manner, there was no way for us to escape; and how easily might the most trifling dispute with these rude men lead to a breach, by which fifty whites, in the power of eight or nine hundred Indians, would have had no chance. They were therefore treated with much apparent confidence and familiarity, and everything went off very well.” This wonderful print is folio number 38 (with the requisite three separate imprint statements, captions in German, French, and English, and the artistÂ’s embossed stamp: “C. Bodmer Direct”). First state, without date in the imprint statement. Ruud, 202-03. See Howes M443a; Wagner-Camp 76; Streeter 1809. Hand-coloring vivid and colors true, faint “speckled” foxing (not affecting the quality of the image). A very desirable and rare Bodmer, in extremely good condition.
