An uncommon, mint, Mediterranean Ship's Passport signed by Martin Van Buren.

[Washington], circa 1839. 11" x 14.5". "Partly-printed Document Signed, ""M Van Buren,"" as President, 1 page, 11"" x 14.5"" [Washington, c. 1839], an unissued, scallop-top Mediterranean Ship's Passport, countersigned, ""A[aron] Vail,"" as Acting Secretary of State. Typical folds, else very fine condition. This document was signed in blank in Washington, D.C., by the President to be sent to a United States port to be filled out, signed, and issued from there by the Collector of the Port. The Collector, or an assistant, would fill in the name of the ship and all the required information. Aaron Vail (1796-1878) was a longtime diplomat, who in addition to his temporary role as Acting Secretary of State while John Forsyth was on vacation, he also served as chargé d'affaires for the American mission to the United Kingdom (1823-1826) and also served as Special Diplomatic Agent to Canada in 1838. In 1840 he assumed the role of chargé d'affaires in Madrid before that office was assumed by Washington Irving in 1842. Blank ship's papers are very uncommon, and this is a particularly attractive example."

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby

London: Chapman and Hall, 1839., 1839. First Edition, First Issue with 'visiter' for 'sister', p.123, and 'latter' for 'letter', Eckel noting that the former misprint was picked up by Dickens in proof and is an error 'rarely seen'. p.160. Octavo. Bound without half-title in attractive contemporary full diced and polished plum calf, richly worked in gilt and blind, with marbled endpapers and and all edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece after Daniel Maclise and thirty-nine engravings by 'Phiz'' (H.K.Browne) Some browning to plates, although a little less than usual. neat repair to foot of spine, some discolour to same, lightly rubbed. A sound, handsome copy in an aristocratic binding - with the Panshanger bookplate depicting the strawberry-leaf coronet of George Augustus Frederick Cowper, Sixth Earl Cowper (1806-1856). Dickens' comic novel centres around the exploits of Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who must support his mother and sister after his father dies. The tone of the work is burlesque, with Dickens usual snipe at social injustice. Many memorable characters are introduced, including Nicholas' malevolent uncle Ralph, playing the role of an antagonist, who thinks Nicholas will never amount to anything, and the villainous Wackford Squeers, who operates a squalid boarding school at which Nicholas temporarily serves as a tutor.

Philadelphia, 1839. Quarto. Contemporary full green morocco, elaborately embossed, with a simple gilt rule on the boards and gilt title on the front board, grey silk endsheets. Hinges expertly repaired, corners lightly worn. Very minor foxing and soiling. Near fine. A remarkable deluxe quarto gift book produced when the genre flourished in the early 19th century (the paper is watermarked "1839"). This copy appears to be unique, or represent some kind of singular production. The embossed pages are printed on various kinds of white paper, with some leaves on other colors of paper. Some of these have printed texts, while others are blank, evidently so the owner could inscribe sentiments of his or her own. The lithographed titlepage is on glazed paper, with the imprint of Thomas Ash, a prominent Philadelphia publisher who produced many volumes in the gift book genre. The volume includes four engravings after Benjamin West, drawn and engraved by H. Moses, printed on blue paper, and probably produced in England. Also includes ten embossed plates, including botanical plates of the rose, passion flower, tulip, amaranth, viola tricolor, a child in prayer, the stork, a bird's nest, and others, each accompanied by prose or poetry within an embossed frame. A fine example of the genre, remarkable both for the range and nature of the contents and for the magnificent American embossed binding. No copies located in OCLC, or in the extensive collections of the American Antiquarian Society, and evidently a unique or one-on production.

Fortsetzung u. Suppl. der Untersuch. über Physiologie der Stimme.

      - Berlin: Bei A. Hirschwald, 1839, 8°, (2), 2, 52 pp., mit 4 gefalteten, doppelblattgr. Kupfertafeln, Halbpergamenteinband. Rare first edtion! - "In 1839, Müller published his last strictly physiological work: Über die Compensation der Kräfte am menschlichen Stimmorgan, which furnished important contributions to the nature of the human voice." - Rothschuh. - Waller 6732; Darmstaedter S.416; Hirsch-H.       Edinburgh, 1839. Half title in each volume. Large, thick octavos. Modern buckram, printed paper labels. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Some light foxing, primarily to first and last few leaves. Tear in half title of second volume, repaired with tape. Very good. This is Audubon's text, designed to accompany the elephant folio edition of THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, giving sketches of the birds described therein. Of great interest are Audubon's accounts of his travels and adventures in the American hinterland, scattered through the volumes as part of the bird descriptions and as separate anecdotes. Includes accounts of his experiences in the Florida Keys, along the Mississippi, and in Louisiana and Kentucky in the 1820s and '30s. Audubon published the text separately from the double elephant folio plates in order to avoid a stricture of the British Copyright Act of 1709 which would have required him to deposit a set of the plates with each of nine depository libraries in the United Kingdom. The publication date on the titlepage of the fifth volume is incorrectly printed as "1849." One of the classic texts of American natural history and travel.

-- [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

London, 1839. Original green publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Cloth on the first two volumes lightly sunned; spine lightly faded on the fourth volume. Corners lightly rubbed. Light scattered foxing and soiling, some slight offsetting. Several leaves loosening in the second volume. Overall, a very good to near fine set, in the original binding. First issue of the first, second, and fourth volumes, with the second issue of the third volume. The account of the Beagle's two voyages, edited by Robert Fitzroy, who served as commander of both voyages. The third volume of this work represents the first edition (second issue) of Darwin's account of the voyage, which provided the basis for his ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES, found here in its second issue entitled, JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE GEOLOGY AND NATURAL HISTORY OF THE VARIOUS COUNTRIES VISITED BY H.M.S. BEAGLE. "The third volume contains Darwin's account of the voyage, now famous as the genesis of his theory of evolutionary biology. The demand for Darwin's JOURNAL immediately exceeded that for the companion volumes of the NARRATIVE. Colburn therefore brought out a separate edition of it in the same year" - Hill. Freeman notes that Darwin's "first published book is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed." The first volume contains Captain King's account of the first coastal surveys of Patagonia and Terra del Fuego, produced on the first expedition between 1826 and 1830. The other volumes comprise the account of the second voyage of the Beagle. Between 1831 and 1836 the ship visited Brazil, Argentina, Terra del Fuego, Chile, Peru, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. The appendix to the second volume, bound here as the fourth volume of this set, includes a meteorological journal, official instructions, correspondence, and notes. Four of the six plates in the appendix volume consist of sixteen separate illustrations of various cloud formations. An attractive set of a landmark of scientific exploration, one of the most important Pacific voyages, and Darwin's first substantial book publication.

Salsette and Elephanta: A Prize Poem Recited in the Theatre, Oxford June 12 1839

J Vincent , 1839 . Paperback. . Stitched booklet in blue paper covers. 'Salsette and Elephanta' was Ruskin's first published work and copies in original state are extremely rare. In the Book Collector (Summer 1985) Dr James Dearden provides a history of the poem's production and its subsequent recital by Ruskin and publication by the Oxford printer J Vincent, who arranged for copies to be available on the day of the recital. Dearden lists 25 known copies, all but a handful in institutional collections and notes that original wrappers are only present in 13 of these. This copy, therefore, is one of an extremely small number surviving in original state and, for its age and vulnerability, is in remarkable condition. Bibliography: Wise and Smart No. 1. An offprint from the Book Collector providing Dr. Dearden's article will be included. Good+ paperback. Light edgewear with very tiny loss to base of spine and half inch closed tear. Covers rubbed, pages age-tanned with stain to top edge affecting final 5 leaves. Stitching intact and tight. There are no pencil or ink inscriptions in the pamphlet.

Trial of Washington L. Townsend on an Indictment for Mayhem, Lying...

1839. Maimed with Oil of Vitriol [Trial]. Townsend, Washington L., Defendant. "Trial of Washington L. Townsend on an Indictment for Mayhem, Lying in Wait For and Maiming Joh[n] Reese, By Throwing Oil of Vitriol in His Face," The Extra Sun (New York, 1839). 20" x 15" newspaper broadsheet, six-column text on recto and verso. Light browning and a few tiny stains, horizontal fold line across center, some edgwear and minor chips and tears to margins. * This extra issued by the New York Sun offers a complete account of a grisly assault with sulfuric acid (oil of vitriol). Townsend, a carpenter, and Reese, a bookbinder, were acquaintances who knew each other for about five years. Shortly before his maiming, Reese heard a rumor that Townsend was a bigamist. He shared this information with Townsend's wife. It seems he was conducting an affair with her and was hoping this news would persuade her to leave her husband. Townsend was indicted for mayhem and assault and battery with intent to kill. Townsend, though apparently guilty, was acquitted. According to The Law Reporter, this was a case that "caused much excitement in New York." However, our broadside appears to be its only popular account. Also, it appears to be unrecorded.         HISTOIRE DE NAPOLEON Par J.M. Baron de NORVINS Illustré par RAFFET Edition Belge de 1839 RARE

EDITIONS SOCIETE TYPOGRAPHIQUE BELGE, BRUXELLES 1839 - HISTOIRE DE NAPOLEON Par J.M. » NAPOLEON A SAINTE-HELENE. Paris: Coblenz and London, [1839-1842].. Handcolored aquatint engraving by René Rollet after Bodmer, blindstamp in lower margin. Sheet size: 20 5/8 x 15 13/16 inches. Very good. Perhaps the greatest image to emerge from the picturing of the American West, and certainly Bodmer's most famous, this highly-charged portrait of Péhriska- Rúhpa ("Two Ravens") presents the warrior and chief of the Hidatsa in way that encapsulates the vanished era of the Plains Indian. The portrait has a great sense of immediacy, intensity, of noise and movement; a moment in time is captured, when we look away the Dog Dance continues. Péhriska- Rúhpa dances in his regalia as a principal leader of the Dog Society of his village. The white tips on the glossy black feathers of the headdress indicate the attachment of a tiny down feather to the point of each plume, the central vertical plume is painted red. Dyed horse hair floats from colored sticks attached to the shafts of the turkey feathers. All this will shortly be in motion again as the dancer resumes his movement to the cadence of drum and the rattle (made of small hooves or dewclaws attached to a beaded stick) held in his right hand. The Dog Society was one of seven such societies amongst the men of the Mandan and Hidatsa Tribes. They were one of the main tenets by which Hidatsa society was lived: as an individual progressed through life it was necessary for him to purchase his entry into successive societies, starting with "the foolish dogs" at about ten to fifteen years of age and graduating to the society of the black- tailed deer for men over fifty. The Dog Society was the fourth of these progressions. Each society had a set number of members, so that an individual from a lower society could only buy entry to the higher society if there was a member of that society who was himself ready to move to the society above his. They all had individual rules, rituals, dances and regalia. All this information was carefully recorded by Prince Maximilian during the travellers' winter stop-over at Fort Clark in 1833-34, this portrait, Bodmer's masterpiece, was painted in March 1834 towards the end of this stay. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St. Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10, 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what was to become virtually lost cultures. GRAFF 4648. HOWES M443a.
