Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Spontini").

London, 6./7. Juli 1838.. 3½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo..

- Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. 63 pp., large folding table. 8°, contemporary plain blue-gray wrappers (small defects to spine at head, foot, and center). Uncut and unopened. In fine condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. According to the author, the modern history of mining in Portugal began in 1801 when D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho became Presidente do Erario and José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva returned from his metallurgical travels in Europe. In January of 1802, a new law was passed regarding the administration of the iron mines and factories. This survey of developments from 1801 is something of a litany of obstacles and difficulties. Political intrigues, the French invasion, and removal of key personnel to Brazil were among the most significant. Poor roads and rivers which were not navigable hindered exploitation of the richest mines, located in the interior. The folding table gives figures for the mining of coal, iron, charcoal, gold, lead, and antimony. Only the mining of charcoal and gold turned a profit; the profit for charcoal greatly exceeded that for gold. Born in Hesse, Germany in 1777, Eschwege was one of several German mineralogists and engineers brought to Portugal in 1802 to help develop the mineral resources of Portugal and Brazil. He spent the years 1807-23 in Brazil as director of gold mines and curator of the royal mineralogical cabinet. While in Brazil he established its first steelworks and undertook several scientific expeditions into the interior of Minas Geraes. His observations were later published in several important works, including @Journal von Brasilien (Weimar, 1818), @Brasilien die Neue Welt (Braunschweig, 1830), @Beiträge zur Gebirgskunde Brasiliens (Berlin, 1832) and @Pluto Brasiliensis (Berlin, 1833). Eschwege returned to Portugal in 1824 when D. João VI appointed him Intendente Geral das Minas e Metais, a post he held until 1829, when he chose to return to Germany rather than serve under D. Miguel. He resumed his former position in 1835, and ended his royal service as an engineer supervising the renovation of various palaces. Eschwege died in Kassel, Germany in 1855.---- Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 294; see also p. 293: "All of Eschwege's works are rare, and increasingly sought after." Innocêncio III, 168-9 (without mention of the folding table). @Grande enciclopedia X, 22. OCLC: 741195860 (University of Kansas, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek). Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi. Edited by "Boz"

London: Richard Bentley,, 1838. With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. 2 volumes, duodecimo. Bound in red half morocco, red cloth boards, spines elaborately gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece, 12 plates. Bookplates, some occasional light foxing, boards faintly rubbed at edges. An attractive set in excellent condition. First edition of Grimaldi's memoirs, edited by Charles Dickens. The task of assembling Grimaldi's voluminous papers had already been tackled once, and Dickens cut again to produce a publishable narrative. Dickens was fascinated with pantomime in general and with clowns in particular, and found a degree of self-identification with Grimaldi, who like him was a spirited, quick-witted and inventive artist, who had a miserable childhood and evinced a lifelong horror of inactivity and of letting any audience down.

In zwei Lieferungen. Erste Lieferung (all publ.).

      - Berlin, gedruckt und verlegt Georg Reimer, 1838, Folio, 1 Bl., 60 pp., 1 Bl., 4 (1 color.) v. Schumann, Troschel et Müller ad. nat. del., Grüzmacher gestochene Tafeln, Halbleinenband mit Rückenvergoldung u. Rückenschild; feines Exemplar. Erste und einzige Ausgabe! - Grundstein mikroskopischer Untersuchungen krankhafter Gewebe! - - THE FOUNDER OF MICROSCOPIC PATHOLOGY - CELLULAR CHARACTER OF TUMORS- - First Edition, in original wrappers as published! - The founder of pathological Histology as an indepedent field, and the first microscopical study of diseased itssue, by which Johannes Müller (1801-1858) showed that the cell theory was a requirement for the study of cancer. In the tumors which he studied Müller identfied cells, their nuclei, granules, fibres, and crystals. The illustrations in the book show better than words what Müller saw. He was thus the source for the work of his pupil Rudolf Virchow. - - Garrison & Morton 2612; Long, A History of Pathology, 187-89; Haagensen, Books of Cancer, no. 41 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

. Hannover, Helwig, 1838, 8°, VI, 154 pp., mit 18 Abbildungen auf 8 lithographierten Taf., Halbleinen der Zeit mit Rückentitel; St.a.Tit, kleiner Eckabriss i.d. Vorrede restauriert, sonst gutes Exemplar.. BEGINN DER ORTHOP?DISCHEN CHIRURGIE! - ERSTE AUSGABE. Sehr selten. - - *First Edition. Rare. Stromeyer is the founder of modern surgery of the locomotor system. He advocated and practised subcutaneous tenotomy for all deformities of the body arising from muscular defects. In Stromeyer's private institute for orthopaedics in Hannover, the treatment of clubfoot was revolutionized. One of his early patients and most enthusiastic proponent of his methods, was the great British surgeon William John Little (1810-1894). The result of tenotomy of his heel cord was so satisfactory to him, that Little remained at Hannover for a period to acquire the knowledge of the technique. At the end of his stay in Germany, he hastened to Berlin to exhibit and teach the new method. He was received by the noted professor Dieffenbach, who in a remarkable short time sectioned 140 tendo-achilles. Little was the first eminent orthopaedic surgeon in the British Isles and the founder of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in London. - Stromeyer, professor in Erlangen, Munich, Freiburg, Kiel, and successively surgeon-general of the Schleswig.-Holstein and Hannoverian armies, was also the father of modern military surgery in German. His "Maxims of War-Surgery" made an epoch in military medicine. Stromeyer was also a poet and wrote an attractive autobiography. - - Garrison-Morton No, 431; Waller 9320; Valentin, Geschg. d. Orthopädie, pp96-97;Edgar M. Bick Classics of Orthopaedics, No.68; Kriegschir. & Feldärzte Preussens 3, pp.144-229, 287-294; Hirsch-H. V, pp.259-361.

In zwei Lieferungen. Erste Lieferung (all publ.).

. Berlin, gedruckt und verlegt Georg Reimer, 1838, Folio, 1 Bl., 60 pp., 1 Bl., 4 (1 color.) v. Schumann, Troschel et Müller ad. nat. del., Grüzmacher gestochene Tafeln, Halbleinenband mit Rückenvergoldung u. Rückenschild; feines Exemplar.. 41

        FABLES DE LA FONTAINE

Paris: H. Fournier Ainé, 1838. FIRST EDITION WITH THESE PLATES n. Hardcover. 241 x 152 mm (9 1/2 x 6"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION WITH THESE PLATES. Extremely pleasing contemporary black half morocco, heavily gilt over marbled boards by Lebrun (stamp-signed at foot of spine), raised bands, spine compartments densely gilt in ornate pattern incorporating fleurs-de-lys, acanthus leaves, and many small tools, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. With many vignettes in text and 240 PLATES (including frontispiece and section titles) AFTER GRANDVILLE. Front pastedown with bookplate of Jules Janin. Ray 191. Just a hint of rubbing to joints and extremities (but this very well masked with dye), minor yellowing, foxing, and spotting to text and plates because of paper quality (persistent without being serious, the second volume less affected), two small marginal ink spots, otherwise a very good copy, sound externally and fresh internally. This is a famous French illustrated book, offered here with both 120-plate series commissioned by the publisher--something rarely found in a contemporary binding like the present one. Ray says that "in these designs, the most popular he ever drew, Grandville presents La Fontaine's beasts acting like men and sometimes costumed like them. Since La Fontaine's poems are a veiled commentary on human behavior, this formula works to admiration. Even Oudry's drawings . . . Do not always match Grandville's in psychological penetration." Ray further notes that "'Fables' had such a success that the publisher commissioned a second 120 illustrations, which appeared in 1840. Copies are sometimes found with both series, though rarely in comtemporary bindings. According to Ramsden, Lebrun started his bindery around 1830 and received a medal in the 1844 Exhibition. A former craftsman in the Simier workshop, he specialized in ornate spines "à la grotesque." The Almanachs show him in business in the rue de Grenelle from 1840-49. Lebrun bindings appear in the Schiff, Béraldi, and Wittock collections. Our former owner, French novelist, literary historian, and theater critic Jules Janin (1804-74) was often referred to as the "prince of critics." According to the Getty Museum, "he attributed his forty-year success to his having changed his mind every fifteen days, thus continuing to surprise the attentive audience of his weekly theatrical reviews.".

TEXTS FOR EVERY DAY IN THE YEAR, principally Practical and Devotional. Selected by Elizabeth Fry.

London, printed for Hamiltobn, Adams, and Co.; Edmund Fry; and W. Darton and Son, Holborn Hill, circa 1838.EDITION UNKNOWN, Preface dated 1831, INSCRIBED BY ELIZABETH FRY THE PRISON REFORMER on the verso front endpaper: "Mary Bullied from Eliz. Fry 1838", very small 8vo, approximately 72 x 54 mm, 2 7 / 8 x 2 inches, pages:iv, (188), collation: (A) - M8, M8 is a blank with printer's name J. Masters at the foot on recto, bound in mid brown cloth with embossed pattern, "TEXTS" in gilt on upper cover, pale yellow endpapers. Very slight wrinkling to spine, ink note in 2 margins, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. Elizabeth Fry was a Quaker prison reformer who transformed the lives of countless thousands of prisoners, convicts and homeless people, and whose ideas on criminal justice are still practised today. It was Stephen Grellet, a Quaker, who turned her attention to the shocking conditions in which women prisoners and their children lived at Newgate Prison: hungry, cold, dirty, without bedding, even newborn babies without clothing. Elizabeth?s first visit to the prison with baby clothes and kindness established a rapport with the women. Soon she set up the first women?s prison visiting committees and went on to bring order and cleanliness to Newgate. She started the first - ever prison school which was a great success. Later she saw to it that the prisoners were given useful occupation and taught skills. Uniquely for that time, she saw the prisoners as individual human beings and understood their need for self - respect. Her ideas and practices were to be influential and effective throughout Europe and eventually the world. All this Elizabeth did not accomplish on her own; she travelled widely in Britain, Ireland and Europe and everywhere she went her extraordinary compassion, eloquence and energetic common sense galvanised others into action'. (ODNB). Not in Bondy, a copy with the same imprint as ours held by the Society of Friends Library.(Copac), others listed with different publishers and printers. Recent half calf, spines with 2 green gilt lettered labels. A complete copy of this very scarce work. Our collation agrees with Evenhuis p. 513-514, our copy however has the 'Tableau général des espèces' pp. 337-364 in the 4th supplement which is not listed in his collation. The work consists of Vols. I,1, I,2, II,1, II,2, II, 3 and 5 supplements. The present work is the book issue, it was also published in the 'Mém. Soc. Scient. de Lille'. Justin Macquart (1778-1855) was a French entomologist and director of the Natural History Museum in Lille. He is one the most important dipterologists of the 19th century and a close friend of Meigen. "En 1838, Macquart publie dans les 'Mémoires ... ' la description de nombreux 'Diptères exotiques nouveaux'. En tout, il décrira 1800 espèces nouvelles" (J. Lhoste p. 128). Between 1838 and 1855 he described nearly 2,000 new species in supplements to 'Histoire naturelle des Insectes and Insectes diptères exotiques nouveaux ou peu connus' (1838) which lists the collections examined to that date. They are those of : Jules Dumont d'Urville with René-Primevère Lesson (the largest including material from the Falkland Islands, the coast of Chile and Peru, the southern and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea); Justin Goudot who had explored South America from 1822 (and continued to until 1842); Louis Pilate who was based in Georgia and Louisiana U.S.A. but lived for five years in Mérida, Yucatán; Auguste Sallé, a young collector later to become a Paris insect dealer with South American connections; Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny who between 1826 and 1823 had travelled, on a mission for the Paris Museum, into Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and Peru returning to France with an enormous collection of more than 10,000 natural history specimens; Peter Claussen (c. 1804-1855) a Danish naturalist who collected in Brazil, a M. Giesebrecht, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (Diptera from Egypt) and three members of a Belgian Commission for the exploration of tropical countries, August Giesebreght (1810-1893), Nicholas Funk (1817-1896) and Jean Jules Linden (1817-1898). Material continued to pour into the museum from these and other sources as Macquarts reputation spread.//Provenance: Bookplate of J. d'Aguilar.//Evenhuis. Litt. Tax. Narrative of an Expedition in H.M.S. Terror, undertaken with a view to Geographical Discovery on The Arctic Shores, in the years 1836-7.

London: John Murray 1838. - vii+456 pp. with 12 lithographic plates, no tissue guards, and a large folding map. No advertising pages at the rear suggest a first edition, second issue. Dark blue textured boards with gilt spine title. The spine has been professionally repaired with a 2 cm. loss at the top extremity replaced with a matching colour without seeking to replicate texture. There is old minor rubbing to the bottom spine extremity, and the front board has a small patch of light fading. Internally there is some light spotting to the front endpaper and rear of frontispiece with some coming through to the sky area of the plate. None elsewhere. There is no sign that tissue guards were ever present. Otherwise the book is very tight and bright, all the plates are clean. The map has had an old repair to a fold and has not been quite correctly folded from an early date. There are owner's initials N. L. B. on the front pastedown, probably fairly contemporary to publication. Overall a very good copy, with beautiful plates of a scarce work of Arctic exploration. The expedition was sent to survey the coast from Prince Regent's inlet and Turnagain point in Hudson's Bay. Caught by bad weather the ship was icebound until July 1837, after which it made its way to Lough Swilly in Ireland.

        A LA MAGNANIMA NACION MEXICANA.

[Arizpe, Sonora: Imprenta del Gobierno del Estado, ]. 1838 - Broadsheet, 8 1/2 x 12 inches. Minute wear to edges. Near fine. An important Mexican political broadsheet and an early Sonora imprint. Of particular note is the juxtaposition of Santa Anna's return from Washington following his capture by Sam Houston with the events of Tacubaya that began the so-called "Pastry War." Tacubaya, a small section of Mexico City, was home to a French pastry chef who complained to French authorities that some Mexican officers had damaged his shop. Other foreign nationals soon issued similar complaints, prompting the French government to send its fleet to Veracruz in the wake of Mexico's failure to provide redress. The year-long conflicted became known as the "Pastry War," and Santa Anna led the Mexican counter-effort. He re- established himself as a national hero through his bravery, even losing a leg in the process. The document reflects the mildly insurgent tone of the newly appointed Sonorese governor, Gen. Jose Urrea, and expresses Sonora's increasing hesitancy to follow the imperialist tendencies of the federal government. At this point Arizona was part of Sonora. Quite rare. OCLC locates only two copies. OCLC 23032403.

        MEMOIRS OF JOSEPH GRIMALDI

1838 - Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. In Two Volumes. London: Richard Bentley, 1838. 36 pp undated Vol II ads. Original pink cloth embossed with flowers, with gilt-decorated spines. First Edition of this early Dickens piece, worked on after OLIVER TWIST and before NICHOLAS NICKLEBY -- during the time leading up to his break with the publisher Bentley. There has been considerable controversy regarding just how much Dickens contributed to this book. We quote from Johnson's biography:~Bentley had acquired a life of the famous clown Grimaldi, longwindedly and clumsily arranged by Thomas Egerton Wilks from autobiographical notes. He [Bentley] proposed that Dickens revise it. Dickens stipulated that his name should appear only as editor, not as author, and demanded a minimum of 300 pounds and a half share of the profits after deduction of expenses, to which Bentley agreed. Dickens did no original writing, except for an introductory and possibly a concluding chapter. His revisions, mostly drastic abridgement, he dictated to his father, who vastly enjoyed his exalted office as amanuensis.~This copy is in the primary binding of pink cloth embossed with a floral design, with a clown in gilt holding the title on each spine. It also has the last plate in Vol II in the first state (without the "grotesque" border that was added around Cruikshank's plate -- the border was removed for the subsequent 1846 one-volume edition). Condition is very good: as always the pink spines are a little faded, and there is very slight shelfwear at the binding extremities (there is also a discreet signature at the top of each title page); the original pale yellow endpapers are present and uncracked, and foxing of the plates is generally limited to the two frontispieces. In all, rather nice condition for these very fragile volumes. Gimbel B64; Carr B599; Eckel pp 140-142; Johnson p. 242. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi. Edited by "Boz". With Illustrations by George Cruikshank.

London: Richard Bentley, 1838 - 2 volumes, duodecimo. Bound in red half morocco, red cloth boards, spines elaborately gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Bookplates, some occasional light foxing, boards faintly rubbed at edges. An attractive set in excellent condition. Portrait frontispiece, 12 plates. Tai-O-Mah, A Musquakee Brave

Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838. Hand-coloured lithograph by J. T. Bowen. In excellent condition. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. Also occasionally referred to as the "medicine man", Tai-O-Mah or Taimah, "Thunder" or "He Who Shakes the Rocks" (c. 1790 - 1830) was an esteemed Fox warrior and chief who maintained an amicable relationship with the United States throughout his life. In 1824, he traveled to Washington as a member of the Sac and Fox delegation, led by General William Clark, which signed a treaty ceding their lands in northern Missouri and the southeastern part of Iowa to the federal government. It was during this visit to the capital that Charles Bird King painted the chief's picture after which McKenney's print was made. Taimah was also a leader of the influential Midewiwin or Great Medicine Society, a secret shamanistic society with religious affiliations that McKenney likened to the Freemasons. It is interesting to note given the calm composure which pervades his features that Taimah was suffering from tuberculosis at the time the portrait was being done. He is buried in Des Moines County, Iowa. McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portraits are largely based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Keokuk and Black Hawk. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the Native Americans for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Office of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices. His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land. In 1827, he journeyed west again for a treaty with the Chippewa, Menominee , and Winebago in the present state of Michigan. His journeys provided an unparalleled opportunity to become acquainted with Native American tribes. When President Jackson dismissed him from his government post in 1830, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project. Within a few years, he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer who had written extensively about the west. McKenney and Hall saw their work as a way of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture. (Gilreath). Cf. BAL 6934; cf. Bennett p.79; cf. Field 992; cf. Howes M129; cf.
