This Map of the Colony of New South Wales, Exhibiting the Situation and Extent of the appropriated lands, including the Counties, Towns, Village Reserves &c. Compiled from Authentic Surveys &c. is respectfully Dedicated to Sir John Barrow Bart. President of the Royal Geographical Society... ".

London: engraved by J. & C. Walker, published by J. Cross, 20 July, 1837. Dissected hand-coloured engraved map, backed on linen, 1265 x 785 mm., remarkablly handsome large-format map, early owner's name "J. Bowman" repeated in pen on the verso; preserved in a silk-lined green morocco case by Sangorski. A fine and rare large-format map depicting New South Wales, of particular interest for the detailed depiction of land-holders in the colony: the mapping of the Southern Highlands, to cite just one meaningful example, shows all of the major grants to figures such as Atkinson, Coghill, Oxley, and Riley. An inset map at top left shows the Australian coastline. This map was originally owned by Dr. James Bowman (1784-1846), who has signed it "J. Bowman" four times to the verso. Bowman joined the British Navy in 1806 and a decade later was appointed to the Mary Anne as a surgeon in charge of the convicts on board. He returned to Sydney in 1817 on the Lord Eldon, now appointed principal surgeon to succeed D'Arcy Wentworth. It was on the voyage out that he became acquainted with John Macarthur, as well as an intimate of John Thomas Bigge. While serving as the head of the Sydney Hospital he married Mary, the second daughter of John and Elizabeth Macarthur, a connection which was directly responsible for him being given such an enormous tract of land in 1824 (her dowry had included 2000 merino sheep after all). Dixon's map clearly shows Bowman's enormous 14,600 acre grant at Ravensworth, not far as the crow flies from grants to William Cox and Sir Francis Forbes. The family sold Ravensworth in 1847 to Captain William Russell (on Bowman see a long entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography). The map was published by Robert Dixon (1800-1858), a surveyor and explorer who arrived in Van Diemen's Land in May 1821 with his brother George. Initially employed by Edward Lord, in 1826 Dixon sold out and went to Sydney to work as an assistant surveyor to John Oxley. One of his first tasks was an open-boat survey of the Illawarra, and in 1827 he accompanied Mitchell to the Grose Valley in Victoria; in a follow-up expedition to the Burragorang valley Dixon became lost and nearly perished. Dixon next completed a series of important surveys in the Blue Mountains, Goulburn, Queanbeyan, the Upper Hunter, and New England. In short, he was so well-travelled that when he returned to England in 1836 he arranged for the publication of the present map, an act which so incensed Mitchell, who fiercely guarded what he saw as his proprietorial rights in the subject, that the then Surveyor-General refused to reinstate Dixon on the latter's return to New South Wales.Cast aside, Dixon settled in Moreton Bay, but soon had a falling out with Governor Gipps (in part again because of a second map that he imprudently published), and ultimately drifted back to Sydney with his family, having offended all of his putative supporters. Although his later career was marked by disappointment, 'Dixon played an outstanding part in extending geographical knowledge in New South Wales, and many of his surveys were performed under trying and hazardous conditions. He ranks high among early surveyors and explorers' (ADB).Dixon dedicated the map to Sir John Barrow, then president of the Royal Geographical Society, and it was engraved by the brothers John and Charles Walker, a firm particularly known for its association with the hydrographer James Horsburgh and the East India Company (Worms & Baynton-Williams, British Map Engravers). Other copies (such as that in the National Library) have been dissected into 40 smaller sections, unlike the 20 sections of this copy. Some flecking and toning, a few spots and wear.

        Vom Kriege.

First edition Berlin: Ferdinand Dümmler, 1832-1837. Very scarce, fine, and complete set of Clausewitz´s writings on warfare, Hinterlassene Werke über Krieg und Kriegführung, with all 10 volumes, including the celebrated Vom Kriege (PMM 297), appearing in the first 3 volumes. "These thousand pages of 'On Warfare' occupy a unique position among military writings of any age and nation. The book is less a manual of strategy and tactics, although it incorporates the lessons learned from the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, than a general inquiry into the interdependence of politics and warfare and the principles governing either or both. War, Clausewitz maintained, must always be regarded 'as a political instrument'; for war, his most famous aphorism runs, 'is nothing but politics continued by different means'. Consequently, he scorns the notion of 'the harmful influence of politics upon the conduct of war', since blame, or praise, must be attached to politics itself. If the course of politics is sound, political influence on the conduct of war can only be advantageous: 'The French revolutionary victories over twenty years resulted mainly from the faulty politics of the opposing governments'. "His basic conception, that military decisions must always be subordinate to political considerations, is buttressed by the emphasis laid on morals and morale as the decisive factors in war. He therefore condemns all rigid blue-prints for campaigns and battles, defines strategy as 'a perpetual alternation and combination of attack and defence', and implies the then startling proposition that there are no bad soldiers but only bad officers. "Clausewitz took an active part in all the continental campaigns between 1793 and 1815 as an officer in Prussian and, 1812-14, Russian services. He worked with Scharnhorst and Gneisenau for the reform of the Prussian army and from 1818 to 1830 was the head of the Berlin military academy, the forerunner of the Prussian general staff. His book Vom Kriege grew out of a series of 'aphorisms' jotted down in 1816-18 which formed the basis of his lectures at the academy. After his death from cholera during the Polish campaign, in which he served as chief of staff to Gneisenau, who succumbed to the same disease, the book was published by his widow and won immediate recognition as the most profound exposition of the philosophy of war - a place that has never been disputed." (Printing and the Mind of Man) 10 volumes, 8vo (202 x 120 mm). Two folding engraved maps and one folding table. (Some light spotting mainly to the edges, faint dampstain in the margin of vol. 3, short tears at map folds.) Contemporary green quarter calf, flat spines ruled in gilt and blind, lettered and numbered directly in gilt (spines lightly faded). Highly scarce in such fine condition.

Oeuvres complètes. - Vie de Rancé - Mémoires d'Outre-tombe.

Collective edition complete works in 25 volumes in Furne & Gosselin. Original edition for The Life of Rance in Delloye. The original edition to the grave Memoirs of Eugene Victor & Sheepish.Binders half fir sorrow, back with four false nerves decorated with triple boxes stamped cold and cold-nets of heads and tails, paper plates to the tank, guards and contreplats combed lined paper, and crowned armorial bookplate Charles-François Ferand (of Gerard Arcjehan) engraved and pasted the first contreplat of each volume, binders of the time. The 25 volumes of the complete works are enriched, frontispiece, Chateaubriand portrait from Girodet and 28 steel engravings from Johannot.Memoirs from beyond the grave are the first issue and have much warning and the list of subscribers that were removed thereafter. Our set is enriched with a unique beautiful letter to his friend and executor Baron Jean-Guillaume Hyde de Neuville. This letter, mounted upside tab of the half-title page of the first volume of memoirs from beyond -Falls, dictated to his secretary and signed by Hyacinthe Pilorge Chateaubriand dated October 28, 1831."[...] I will deliver a final battle, and fpring, I will take the path of exile, because decidedly I will neither pay taxes to Louis Philippe, nor live on it. I will find myself immersed in new tribulations, but it is our role to you and me and force is to accept our destiny. »Hyde de Neuville, regularly quoted in the memoirs from beyond the grave, is among the most loyal friends Chateaubriand. It will be one of its four executors, is harnessing including the difficult task of publishing the grave Memoirs of attempting to enforce the author's wishes. An ardent defender of legitimacy from his youth, friend Cadoudal as Malesherbes, conspirator exiled by Napoleon, Hyde meets Chateaubriand in 1807 in Cadiz. Immediate friendship links the two men. In 1820, Hyde tries vainly to offer Chateaubriand an annuity to overcome its financial troubles. Very politically engaged, they co-opt another in various positions of ministers or ambassadors. After the dismissal of Charles X, the two men are at the service of the Duchesse De Berry and arrested together in July 1832 for threatening state security. In 1836, Hyde founded with other friends Chateaubriand a company to buy the rights of memoirs from beyond the grave and publish them after the death of the author according to his wishes.Advice and support Chateaubriand in all his affairs, Hyde has with him a touching correspondence (published in 1929) which reflected their long and lasting friendship. "Chateaubriand tells her melancholy, her despairs, regrets of an ancient world that both had known his worries about the publication of his works" (in John William Hyde de Neuville (1776-1857) and conspirator diplomat by Françoise Watel). In the unpublished letter dated 28 October 1831 that enriches our copy Chateaubriand refers to his whereabouts between Paris and Switzerland for the publication of his defense of Charles X threatened with banishment. In a few words full of complicity, he evokes the vain and courageous struggle of Hyde and himself to save their world illustrated by this quote from Racine stressed: "We will not tell you that" Benjamin is feeble, and Judah without virtue. '"with no doubt, Hyde knows the context of this verse taken from Athaliah, "Well what can I in the midst of this people killed / Benjamin is without force, and without virtue Judah / The day of their lives off King race / extinguished all the fire of their ancient boldness. »Exceptional collection of works by Chateaubriand in uniform binding time, composed, among others, of the original edition of the grave Memoirs enriched with an important and original autograph letter signed. Superb example of the dissolution of a world as much as literary resistance of greatest French writer of the time.       Edinburgh: Blackie & Sons, 1837. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Hill, D. O. (engravings of). Uncommon complete set of the "new" edition of Hogg's works - certainly after 1837, perhaps as late as 1860s, but decorated cloth bindings are more typrical of the 1840s - uniformly bound in narrow ribbed, cordovan/brown cloth, elaborately blind stamped with harp in ivy surround gilt stamped front cover and elaborate ivy-pattern and titles in gilt to spine. Each volume with binder's polished yellow endpapers, some with Blackie's publisher list front, some back, some not. Corners bumped, worn and minor loss on some, spines a wee cocked, and some show minor cloth loss spine tips. Spines a tad faded, but uniformly so. A fine exemplar of publisher's decorated cloth of the period, and seldom found uniform in such a large set of works.

Second and Last Ascent of the Vauxhall Balloon, previously to its return to England. The authorities of Paris having most kindly once more granted the use of the barracks for this purpose, the last ascent of the celebrated Vauxhall and Nassau balloon will take place, as before, at the Rue du Faubourg Poissonniere at one O?Clock, next Monday, January 9, 1837 . to be conducted by Mr. Green being his 228th ascent.

(Paris:) Printed by Julius Didot, Senior, 4, Boulevard d?Enfer. 1837 8217 - Folio broadside on recto only on yellow paper, 5c circular tax stamp over 2 letters in title; 2 old folds. 41 x 25cm. v.g. An eccentric piece of printing using up to 14 different types, including a serif with the upper half of each letter angled diagonally right and then diagonally left creating a rather hallucinogenic perspective. Charles Green was a celebrated Victorian balloonist who made 526 ascents during a thirty-year career. In 1836 Green built the Great Nassau balloon for Gye and Hughes, proprietors of Vauxhall Gardens. Having later purchased the balloon for £500 he used it to make his most daring journey travelling 500 miles from Dover to Weilburg in Germany in November 1836. Later flying up to Paris, he made two journeys from the French capital, the second of which is advertised here.

Narrative of a Journey from the Tower of Bá-'l-haff, on the Southern Coast of Arabia, to the ruins of Nakab al Hajar, in April, 1835. Read January 23, 1837. [in: The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London. Volume the Seventh, 1837. Part I.]

London: John Murray, 1837 - Octavo. Original printed wraps. Slightly rubbed and soiled, spine creased, light browning of the text-block, short closed tear to one of the maps, but overall very good. Largely unopened. 2 lithographed folding maps, "Sketch of a Route to the Ruins of Nakab al Hajar on the Southern Coast of Arabia", "Map of Oman in Arabia". First edition of this important account of the pre-Islamic mountain fort of Naqab al-Hajar (modern-day Yemen), subsequently incorporated into the author's Travels in Arabia (published the following year) and extremely uncommon in this condition. "Wellsted's papers read before the Royal Geographical Society procured him immediate recognition in the scientific world, and he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 6 April 1837 Wellsted was an acute observer and not blinded by prejudice or ignorance in his description of the local people. His accounts of the geography of [southern Arabia], particularly the irrigation systems and the way of life in remote mountain tracts, continue to be important as a unique description of the country at an early date" (ODNB). Wellsted (1805-1842) a naval officer with the East India Company, was sent to survey the southern coast of Arabia on board the Palinurus, under the command of Captain Haines, in 1833. In April 1835, while stationed on the Yemeni coast between Al Mukalla and Aden, he heard news from the local Bedouin of an ancient fort some fifty miles inland. He procured camels and a local guide and travelled up the Wadi Meifah, "the most interesting geographical feature we have yet discovered on the southern coast of Arabia" (p. 32), assiduously describing local topography and agriculture. His was the first recorded visit of a European to Naqab al-Hajar, a site which he believed to date from the Sabaean or Himyaritic period. Macro 2278 for the 1906 (Bombay Selections) edition.         Hatsugasumi oboro no tsukikasa (or from the title label): Shunjo yae zakura [trans.: Early Spring Mist over the Moon's Halo]

Ten double-page finely color-printed woodcuts. 22 (lacking first folding leaf, unillustrated, of preface); 18; 19 folding leaves. Three vols. Small 8vo (180 x 120 mm.), orig. printed decorated wrappers (upper covers somewhat rubbed), orig. block-printed title label on upper covers (not present on Vol. III), new stitching. N.p.: 1837. First edition of this extremely rare ninjobon-style shunga book, a genre of novel depicting youthful love in a sentimental style. It was released in the hey-day of erotic publications before legislative restrictions were instituted in the early 1840s. "In his own time, Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) was undoubtedly the most popular and successful print designer in Japan, outdistancing his now more famous contemporaries Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. Possessed of enormous talent and energy, he was a prolific artist who seems to have been perfectly in tune with his age, reflecting its changing tastes even as he helped to form them."-Izzard, Kunisada's World. The illustrator Kunisada's pen-name Fukiyo Mata(h/b)ei appears several times, for example, in the first volume's first image on a byobu screen in the upper-right corner. The text of the present work was composed by Shotei Kinsui (alias: Nyoko-an Shujin (1795-1863)). Most of the double-page illustrations, all intricately colored, have a rectangular panel with the title of the scene, such as "Seductress and the Young Man," "A Very Young Prostitute with a Client," "A Woman of the Pleasure Quarter and her True Love," "Secret Rendezvous in the Warehouse," "Bandit Having his Way," "An Intimate Moment under the Veil [Mosquito Netting]," "Skillful Husband Pleasing his Wife," and "Canary's Trembling Voice." The backgrounds of each image are highly detailed. A fine set of a rare book; WorldCat locates no copy and the Union Catalogue of Early Japanese Books locates only one copy. Lacking the first folding leaf of preface in the first volume; it seems never to have been bound in. Stitching a little loose. The work is not to be confused with Hiroshige's book with the same title. ? Hayashi, Yoshikazu, Edo Enpon Shutaisei, Vol. II (2012), p. 161 (in trans.)-"His [Kunisada's] brushstrokes are exceptionally refined. In spite of the small format [actually shunga books of this period are all of this size], the brushstrokes are masterful.".

        SCHAFFGOTSCH NOBLE FAMILY TREE.

Brno Moravia [Czech Republic] 1837 - Manuscript, Ink and coloured pigments on parchment, heightened in gold, with 4 pendant wax seals encased in wood (Very Good, some minor warping wear to edges of parchment with minor loss to notarial marginal notes at bottom, else details and illumination sharp and clean, some cracking to wax seals, with contemporary dated notary stamp), parchment: 49.4 x 63.6 cm (19.5 x 25 inches). An especially fine illuminated manuscript family tree of the noble Schaffgotsch house of Bohemia, tracing 5 generations, including members of the houses of Fürstenberg, Blümegen, Zierotin and Herberstein. This magnificent noble family tree features a line of the Bohemian-Moravian division of the Schaffgotsch house, including members of the houses of Fürstenberg, Blümegen, Zierotin, Herberstein. The family arms of each member are exquisitely painted, with details heightened in gold. It is based on the ancestry of Josepha Gräfin Schaffgotsch zu Kynast-Greiffenstein (1819 – 1899) and goes back a further four generations to the late 17th Century, altogether including 30 of her ancestors. Josepha was the daughter of Johann Joseph Graff Schaffgotsch (1794 - 1874) and Maria Landgräfin von Fürstenberg (1792 - 1863), and was married to Hermann Freiherr von Diller-Hess (d. 1870). The Schaffgotsch family is an old and august noble house, established in Silesia since the 13th Century. The sons of Hans von Schaffgotsch zu Kynast und Kemnitz (d. 1469) founded two distinct lines of the family. Anton von Schaffgotsch zu Schildau (d. 1508) established the family in Bohemia and Moravia, while his brother Kaspar von Schaffgotsch zu Fischbach (d. 1534) continued a line in Silesia. The Bohemian-Moravian line of the Schaffgotsch house was raised to become Bohemian barons (Freiherr) in 1674 and counts (Graf) in 1681, and many of their members held senior roles in the civil and ecclesiastical admiration of Bohemia. The present family tree commences (in the far upper left) with Johann Ernst Anton Graf von Schaffgotsch von Kynast-Greiffenstein (1675 - 1747), a direct descendent of Anton von Schaffgotsch zu Schildau. The Schaffgotsch line continues through his son Ernst Wilhelm Graf von Schaffgotsch (1704 - 1766), then to Johann Ernst Graf von Schaffgotsch (1742 - 1825) and on to Johann Joseph Graf von Schaffgotsch zu Kynast und Greiffenstein (1794 – 1874), Josepha’s father. The Bohemia branch of the Schaffgotsch house remained in Bohemia and Moravia until 1945, and died out in 1993. Going back 4 generations, members of four other important houses appear on the present family tree, including August Ferdinand Graf von Herberstein (d. 1767); Johann Ludwig Graf von Zierotin (1699 – 1761); Prosper Ferdinand Graf von Fürstenberg-Stühlingen (1662 -1704); and Hermann Jodocus Graf von Blümegen (1672 – 1733). The present family tree was notarized in Brno on April 3, 1837, and features notarial stamps on the top and notarial lines and countersignatures on the bottom.

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1837. With Illustrations by R. Seymour and Phiz. Octavo (212 x 450 mm). Contemporary black quarter calf, marbled paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, elaborate gilt and blind stamping to spine, gilt rule to edges of calf on boards, marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page, 41 plates. Some wear and rubbing to extremities, slight scuffs to boards, bookplate to front pastedown, oxidisation to plates as often, a very good copy. First edition, early issue, with most of the first issue points. All the plates are in early states with page numbers as called for but no titles or imprints, and the vignette title-page with the signboard reads "Veller" (corrected to "Weller" in later issues). Robert Seymour provided the illustrations until he committed suicide; Robert William Buss then took over, but he was inexperienced in steel engraving and had to be replaced. The final choice, Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), was to be Dickens's chosen collaborator for the next two decades. For later issues Phiz re-engraved the Seymour plates and entirely replaced the Buss plates. This copy includes the original plates by Buss and Seymour.

" Rousseurs. Blavier, les fous littéraires, pp. 586 et suiv.

Narrative of a Journey from the Tower of Bá-'l-haff, on the Southern Coast of Arabia, to the ruins of Nakab al Hajar, in April, 1835. Read January 23, 1837.

London: John Murray,, 1837. [in: The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London. Volume the Seventh, 1837. Part I.] Octavo. Original printed wraps. 2 lithographed folding maps, "Sketch of a Route to the Ruins of Nakab al Hajar on the Southern Coast of Arabia", "Map of Oman in Arabia". Slightly rubbed and soiled, spine creased, light browning of the text-block, short closed tear to one of the maps, but overall very good. Largely unopened. First edition of this important account of the pre-Islamic mountain fort of Naqab al-Hajar (modern-day Yemen), subsequently incorporated into the author's Travels in Arabia (published the following year) and extremely uncommon in this condition. "Wellsted's papers read before the Royal Geographical Society procured him immediate recognition in the scientific world, and he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 6 April 1837 ? Wellsted was an acute observer and not blinded by prejudice or ignorance in his description of the local people.

Full volume. With this work, Schwann "proved categorically that alcoholic fermentation was the result of a living organism, not an inanimate chemical mass" (Hornsey, A History, 409) Independently of Cagniard-Latour, Schwann discovered the yeast cell" (GM 674). At the time, the prevailing theory was that fermentation was caused by oxidation and Schwann's discovery that alcoholic fermentation and the fermentation that causes putrefaction were carried out by microbes was ignored and even ridiculed at the time. "Today, he is regarded as the founder of the germ theory of putrefaction and fermentation" (ibid). Theodor Schwann (1810-1882) was a German anatomist and physiologist; his mentor was Johannes Múller, often regarded as the father of experimental physiology. In the 1930s, Schwann began to experiment on infusoria and fermentation, by 1936 becoming convinced that alcoholic fermentation was caused by a living being. "Schwann was lead to the idea that alcoholic fermentation was related to the metabolism of yeast by his conception that putrefaction was related to the metabolism of live organisms."(DSB XII, p. 242). "According to Schwann's experiments, solutions of cane sugar to which yeast had been added, and then boiled, fermented only when atmospheric air was passed through them but, contrary to Gay-Lussac's theory, not when heated air was used. Schwann also observed budding, and the formation of 'several cells within one cell', what we now know as sporulation. The presence of a living organism during fermentation was confirmed by microscopical work, and Schwann was able to describe the morphology of yeast" (Hornsey, A History, 409). Schwann's experiments led him to conclude "that the processes of putrefaction and fermentation were probably similar in their essence and were due to live agents which obtained their sustenance from the fermentible or putrescible materials. [During the course of these] experiments, Schwann [also] discovered and gave an accurate acount of the yeast plant and its mode of reproducing by budding. In his paper (the paper offered here) he anticipated Pasteur's work when he asserted that fermentation of sugar was a chemical decomposition brought about by yeast attacking the sugar and some nitrogen containing substance necessary for its life whereby the elements not used by yeast itself unite to form alcohol" (Bulloch "The History of Bacteriology", pp. 86-87). CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth. Full volume. 8vo. Ex-libris bearing three small stamps (half-title, title, and contents page); as well, a perforated stamp on the title page. There are no spinal markings. Tightly and solidly rebound in brown cloth over marbled paper boards; new endpapers. Gilt-lettered at the spine. Three plates. Very slight toning within; largely bright and clean throughout. Near fine condition.

86-87).       69 unpaginierte Blätter aus drei aufeinanderfolgenden Heften (Kladden). 21 x 16,5 cm (Kladden), 22 x 18 cm (Einband). Späterer (20. Jh.) Leineneinband. April in Sternberg (Mecklenburg) geboren.
