View of the port of Sebastopol and the Russian Imperial Fleet.

1837 - Original drawing in ink on 4 sheets of paper joint together, mounted, framed and glazed. Dimensions of the panorama: 22 x 130 cm. Overall dimensions: 35.5 x 145 cm. Large original drawing showing the departure of the Russian Imperial Fleet from the port of Sebastopol on the Black Sea on 22 August 1837. This is a rare contemporary full view of the bay and the port in its heyday, before the dramatic changes brought by the Crimean War in 1853-56. It was at the time undergoing a rapid development under the direction of the Commander of the Ports of the Black Sea, Admiral M.P. Lazarev. The drawing was lithographed after the French artist Auguste Raffet (1804-60) and published under No. 48 in the famous work by Anatole Demidoff "Voyage dans la Russie meridionale et la Crimee, par la Hongrie, la Valachie et la Moldavie" in 1848. The lithographed plate follows the sketch in every detail, additionally showing a close-up of a pasture field and a road on the foreground. Raffet accompanied Count Anatoliy Nikolaevich Demidov, Prince of San Donato (1812-70) on his expedition to Ukraine and Crimea, the Russian territorial acquisitions in the south, that he launched in 1837 at his own expense. The trip lasted a little over four months during which time Raffet produced numerous sketches. He quickly decided to publish them, discussing it with the lithographers Gihault brothers on his return to France. The account was first published in 1840 in a reduced format and with only 27 plates, without this view of Sebastopol. The full-scope publication was delayed by ten years, due to the artist's perfectionism. The results were astonishing: Raffet's images are a fascinating depiction of the landscape and architecture of a region little known to western Europeans at that time.

Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, Containing Upwards of Six Hundred and Fifty Figures and Descriptions of Figures Foreign Insects, Interspersed with Remarks and Reflections on Their Nature and Properties

Henry G. Bohn, London 1837 - Three volumes Quarto. three-quarter brown morocco lettered in gilt over dark green cloth covered boards. Profusely illustrated with 150 hand coloured plates (all present). Considered the better and more accurate edition. Dru Drury (1725Ð1804) was a silversmith with a passion for entomology. His profitable business enabled him to spend significant amounts of money on his hobby and over a thirty year period he built up a famous collection of over 11,000 insect specimens. As well as collecting English insects, he acquired more "exotic" samples by persuading the officers of ships sailing to other continents and other travellers to collect insects on his behalf; for this they were paid 6d per insect 'whatever the size'.Illustrations of natural history was published in three parts between 1770 and 1782. The illustrations were based on specimens in his collection. The hand-coloured copperplate engravings were beautifully executed by Moses Harris; he was responsible for illustrating several books of natural history by various authors, as well as his own works. Drury assures the reader in the preface that 'the utmost care and nicety has been observed, both in the outlines, and engraving. Nothing is strained, or carried beyond the bounds nature has set'.His descriptions often lack scientific precision; but his notices of the libellulid¾ and of the insects of Sierra Leone are specially valuable. Some of his papers came into Mr. Westwood's hands. Linn¾us, Kirby, and Fabricius each held Drury in high estimation, and named insects after him. Together with Pallas, the younger Linn¾us, and Haworth, they were wont to correspond with him. His ÔExotic Entomology' was in part translated into German, and annotated by G. W. F. Panzer, 1785. [Nissen 1160]. Some rubbing to covers, front endpapers of volume I cracked over hinge, occasional minor foxing on text pages, plates clean and crisp and colours strong "New Edition" (2nd.) of the original 1770-1787 publication "brought down to the present state of the science with the systematic character of each species, synonyms, indexes, and other additional matter".

Ampie note esegetiche in calce. Darlow e Moule, 5600 ("His pure Italian style is not vitiated by French influence"); N. Bingen, Philausone (1500-1660), nr. 133..

Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane

Paris, Librairie de A. Pougin, 1837. Duodecimo, three volumes bound as one, viii, 233; iv, 220 and iv, 236 pages. Contemporary half calf and marbled papered boards; leather slightly rubbed and bumped, with slight wear to the corners and light tidemarks to the leather on the panels near the spine; marbled paper heavily rubbed and a little marked; light waterstain to the top lefthand corner throughout the book, and to the top righthand corner of the front half, staining the leading edge a little; a very good copy. Inscribed in ink on an early binder's blank 'Bought at the sale / of Governor Gawler's effects / May 27, 1841. J F'. Unfortunately it is not James Hurtle Fisher - we have checked! There are approximately 40 male JFs in the 1841 South Australian census (and Fisher is not listed), and easily half as many women, so we leave the detective work to those with more spare time. A name on both the pastedown and front flyleaf has been blacked out at a very early stage; we suspect underneath the black ink it reads 'George Gawler' but again we leave the forensics to the experts. One thing we can say is that when Colonel George Gawler (1795-1869) was summarily dismissed from his post as South Australia's second governor on 11 May 1841 when Captain George Grey knocked on his door, he lost no time in clearing the decks. The 'Register' of the following Saturday, 22 May, contains a large advertisement for a public sale to be conducted by the Adelaide Auction Company, acting 'under instructions from Colonel Gawler to sell ... on Wednesday next, at twelve precisely, his surplus Furniture and effects'. Before the 'very elegant and useful' carriage and 'A lot of pigs', but after the superb piano with 'extra set of Strings, Oilcloth Cover, Canterbury, Tuning Key and pair of elegant Music Stools', a pair of globes, 'iron bedsteads (brass ornaments) with mattress, bolster, and pillows' and '300 ounces of useful plate, in spoons, forks, fish slices, butter knives, teapots, ladles, &c.', there are 'About 200 volumes of books'. This item is one of them. Consult the Australian Dictionary of Biography for the potted history of Gawler's 31 months in South Australia, from his arrival in October 1838 with the task of rendering 'viable the experiment in systematic, self-supporting colonization' until he was abandoned as the scapegoat under 'the combined weight of outraged Wakefield theorists, commissioners anxious to whitewash themselves, and enemies of the colony'. He left Adelaide a month later on the 'Dumfries'. This small volume, with its curiously affecting inscription inserted on the day by someone with a sense of history in the making, is a wonderful footnote to the story.

GAMONIA Or the Art of Preserving Game and an Improved Method of Making Plantations and Covers

Rudolph Ackermann 1837 - First edition, with errata slip to the last printed leaf. Original publisher's full green morocco with gilt decoration and lettering. All edges gilt. A fine copy, the spine slightly faded with a small ink stain to the upper board, but unusually bright and crisp. Internally fresh with the colour plates notably clean and vibrant. Fifteen hand-coloured aquatint plates after J. T. Rawlins. "An esteemed book. It is really a treatise on forestry, written with a view to laying out plantations in the way most suitable to game preservation. But the highly coloured plates mostly represent shooting scenes. They are unusually attractive, and convey a good impression of the way in which our forebears killed their game, in the beginning of the 19th century. There are several pictures showing a kind of battue, where the sportsmen used two guns and loaders, but the shooting appears to have been very wild."         A Review, Financial, Statistical, & Commercial, of the Empire of Brazil and its Resources: Together with a Suggestion of the Expediency and Mode of Admitting Brazilian and other Foreign Sugars into Great Britain for Refining and Exportation.

London, Effingham Wilson, 1837. 8vo. Slightly later dark green pebble-grained cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow endpapers; pp. viii, 151, large folding table, others in the text; very light marginal wear, title and last leaf a little spotted due to offsetting from fly-leaves; provenance: from Gloucestershire County Library with their stamps and shelfmarks; contemporary engraved armorial bookplate G. R. Porter inside front cover. Very rare first edition of this economic study of Brazil at the beginning of the Victorian era, with the aim of attracting British investment to the recently established independent country, 'now possessed of a well-ordered, economical, and popular Governement' (p. viii). Johann Jakob Sturz was born in Frankfurt (1800) to a Bavarian civil servant, who had 12 children. He became a merchant, and driven by wanderlust did business in Mexico, before he was hired by a London gold mining company active in Brazil. Disgusted by the treatment of the black workforce, he quit this good position after two years. He then campaigned for free trade with Brazil, linking the country with the world economy, against slavery, and after long negotiations and after having invested much of his own wealth, a British steam ship company gained access to Brazilian rivers and ports in 1838. He devoted the rest of his life (he died in 1877) to philanthropic causes, and campaigned against cruelty to animals. All of his books and pamphlets are of great rarity. Borba de Moraes 841.

GAZETTEER OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI. WITH A MAP OF THE STATE, FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SURVEYOR GENERAL, INCLUDING THE LATEST ADDITIONS AND SURVEYES, TO WHICH IS ADDED AN APPENDIX CONTAINING FRONTIER SKETCHES AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF INDIAN CHARACTER

St. Louis: C. Keemle, 1837. FIRST EDITION. This compendium of information designed to encourage settlers to come to Missouri was assembled by soldier, trapper, explorer, and publisher Alphonso Wetmore (1793-1849), who enlisted prominent men from each county in the state to contribute information about the amenities of their region. Here, specific descriptions of the various counties follows a general overview of the state. There is a Catalogue of Minerals, a list of roads and distances, and information about postal facilities. An appendix contains seven entertaining stories of life on the frontier, probably written by Wetmore, including a famous account of a futile attempt to save an Indian captive from being sacrificed. At the end of the book one finds the Constitution of the State of Missouri. Although largely forgotten today, Wetmore was one of the first writer to produce stories of the American West, and his humorous tales may be seen as forerunners of Twain.. 224 x 140 mm. (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). xvi, 382 pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's purple cloth, printed paper label on the spine (neat repair to head of spine). In a modern brown morocco-backed clamshell box. Engraved frontispiece, fine folding engraved map dated February 1837. Upper cover with neatly inked name of former owner Otis Pankhurst. Graff 4615; Howes H-296; Sabin 103064; Streeter 1802; Wagner-Camp 69. Corners a little bumped, extremities a bit rubbed, spine sunned to a light tan, paper spine label chipped, occasional minor foxing, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh, the fragile map very well preserved.         A Review, Financial, Statistical, & Commercial, of the Empire of Brazil and its Resources: Together with a Suggestion of the Expediency and Mode of Admitting Brazilian and other Foreign Sugars into Great Britain for Refining and Exportation.

      - London, Effingham Wilson, 1837. Doppeltafeln, 3 Halbledereinbänden der Zeit mit reicher Rückenvergoldung. This three volumes are uniformly bound in half calf, richly gilt decorated. Ex library copy (Yale Medical Library). A small hole in the title page of vol. 1, but a clean and well preserved, nice set.THE GREAT ANDRAL EDITION. The Publication of this work revolutionized the study of diseases of the Thoracic Organs. R.Th.Laennec (1781-1826) was something much more than the discoverer of auscultation. He was a distinguished anatomist and great clinician. The invention of the stethoscope was remarkable, but even more remarkable was what he himself did with the instrument. Gabriel Andral (1797-1876), clinician and teacher, was one of the outstanding figures in the golden days of 19th century Parisian medicine. The works by Andral are clinically significant and characteristic of the best medical practice more than a century ago. cf. Garrison & Morton, No 2673 + 3219 Bedford No. 457

Stemmi e intitolazioni di Sua Maestà Imperiale Reale Apostolica Ferdinando I.° Imperatore d'Austria.

Milano, dall'Imperiale Regia Stamperia, 1837. - Folio (230 x 340 mm). (20) pp. With 4 lithographed plates (one folded, measuring 48 x 59 cms). (Includes): Wappen und Titel Seiner kaiserlichen königlichen Apostolischen Majestät Ferdinand des Ersten, Kaisers von Oesterreich. (20) pp. Small folio. Publication of the official titles and styles of Ferdinand, who had become emperor of Austria in 1835 and would be crowned King of Lombardy-Venetia in 1838 (a mere formality, anticipated here). Gives the long, middle, and short titles in both Italian and Latin, a detailed Italian description of Ferdinand's coats of arms (also in its full, medium, and small versions), and the Latin titles to be used in as seal legends with these coats of arms. All three versions of the arms are illustrated; in addition, a diagram explains the extremely detailed Great Coat. - A single ink annotation (to the explanation of the arms of Trieste); a tear to the folding illustration of the Great Coat has been repaired. Very rare: apart from the copy in the Austrian National Library, catalogues list a single copy in the U.S. (University of Illinois) and two in Italy (Biblioteca della Fondazione Biblioteca San Bernardino and Biblioteca della Fondazione Bruno Kessler, both in Trento). - Included is the slightly smaller German version, not illustrated, but prefixing a publication of the official decree of 23 September 1836, and giving the titles in Latin and German, the heraldic description of the various titles (annotated in red crayon and ink, taking particular exception to the description of the arms of Bregenz as turnips: "Nonsense! They are ermine tails"), and the seal legends. - Some brownstaining and a few edge flaws to the German publication. OCLC 883395896.

SOUTH AFRICA - EASTERN CAPE / XHOSA WARS: [UNTITLED MANUSCRIPT SKETCH MAP OF THE ‘EASTERN FRONTIER’ OF THE CAPE COLONY / GRAHAMSTOWN-GREAT FISH RIVER AREA].

Manuscript, pen and brown ink, with pencil, on paper (Good, chipping along edges with minor loss, old folds), 39 x 20.5 cm (15.5 x 8 inches). - [‘Eastern Frontier’, Cape Colony], 1837. An original manuscript sketch map of the Grahamstown-Great Fish River region of South Africa, the strategically critical ‘Eastern Frontier’ of the Cape Colony, made immediately in the wake of the Sixth European-Xhosa War (1834-6). - This intriguing manuscript sketch map was made by an English settler, in 1837, and depicts the ‘Eastern Frontier’ region of the British Cape Colony, in the immediate wake of the Sixth European-Xhosa War (1834-6). Importantly, and as will be explained further, the map features the locations of several of the conflict’s key battles. The map’s scope embraces the "Sea" (Indian Ocean) coast roughly between the mouths of the Kareeg and Great Fish Rivers, and extends inland to include Grahamstown, a good stretch of the Great Fish River, a tract of the Keiskamma River, and further inland to a point just beyond Beaufort. Most of the territory depicted, being the lands west of the lower Great Fish and the Kat Rivers (known as the Albany and Beaufort Districts), is implicitly assumed to the part of the Cape Colony, inhabited largely by recently arrived English settlers. The territory beyond the lower Great Fish and Kat Rivers is labeled ‘Kafir Territory’, also known as Kaffreria, being the lands of the Xhosa, a nation of skilled warriors who had long resisted European encroachment. It is important to note that ‘Kafir’ is today considered a derogatory term for Black Africans, although curiously the word originally comes from an Arabic term for "infidel". The English settlements along the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony were anchored by the centres of Grahamstown, Bathurst and Beaufort, as shown here. However, the map features a wealth of other information, revealing the region to be a military frontier, including the locations of current and former British army outposts, such as "Fort Brown" and "Fort Willshire (abandoned)" (a forward position located in Xhosa territory); numerous trading posts; .

Ferguson III, 3026 Howgego V, Imaginary Voyages, L1.

Autographed Letter, Signed "Secy. Mahlon Dickerson," to Nicholas Biddle, President of the Bank of the United States, responding to Biddle's proposal to make funds available for Navy Pensions

Washington, D.C., 1837. 1-1/2 pages, pen and ink on paper. Folio. Old folds, else fine. 1-1/2 pages, pen and ink on paper. Folio. A PROPOSAL TO FUND NAVY PENSIONS. A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and it's continued involvement in US Navy pensions. After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836, a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Bank President Nicholas Biddle, Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders (excepth the US govenrment) voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank, which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly stae-chartered one. This letter, from Secretary of the Navy, Mahlon Dickerson, discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part: "I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose, that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions, credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States..." Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837, Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States, and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844. Born in Hanover Township, New Jersey, Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853) was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion, who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey, serve as US Senator, receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy, and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey.
