1835 London & Birmingham Railway Map, Plan of the Line and Adjacent Country, Robert Stephenson Engineer, Hand Coloured Maps with Slipcase

Incorporated on 6th May 1833 The London and Birmingham Railway (L&BR) was a very early railway company in the United Kingdom from 1833 to 1846, when it became part of the London and North Western Railway (L&NWR). It was a 112-mile (180 km) railway line which the company opened in 1838 between London and Birmingham was the first intercity line to be built into London. It is now the southern section of the West Coast Main Line. The line was engineered by Robert Stephenson. It started at Euston Station in London, went north-north-west to Rugby, where it turned west to Coventry and on to Birmingham. It terminated at Curzon Street Station, which it shared with the Grand Junction Railway (GJR), whose adjacent platforms gave a link to the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR), and allowed through rail travel from London to those cities, Published in 1835, housed in the original cloth covered and gilt stamped slipcase, this is an early railroad map of the London & Birmingham railway, covering the full length of the line, printed in two sheets, each measuring 31 inches by 29 inches approx , the maps are hand coloured and mounted on Linen, with two inset maps, one showing the London Depots at Chalk Farm and Euston Grove, the other showing the Birmingham Depot, some foxing and mild offsetting else both the maps are in very good condition, the slipcase has some mild edge wear else in good condition

History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France from the Year 1807 to the Year 1814

the Year 1814 1835 - The 3rd edition of thisfamous history of the British victory in in the Iberian Peninsula, by an officer who served with distinction in the campaign. Napier saw most of the major actions: his health was permanently damaged on the retreat to Corunna; he was present on the famous march to Talavera; he was wounded on the Coa; he was shot near the spine at Cazal Nova; he was recommended for a brevet majority after his bravery in pursuing the French in their retreat from Torres Vedras; he was present at the storming of Badajoz; he commanded the 43rd regiment at Salamanca; he commanded a brilliant attack at the battles of the Nive. In the occupation of France following the battle of Waterloo he determined to improve his education; amazingly his literacy was very poor up until this time. He was persuaded by his friends to write this history, having determined himself to become an artist. The Duke of Wellington himself assisted greatly, handing over the papers of Joseph Bonaparte which were captured at Vittoria. They were decoded by Napier's wife. The first volume was published in 1828, and it was by far the most popular contemporary account. This edition includes 55maps and plans. Additionally, replies to the attacks of his various political and personaldetractors are prefixed to the volumes; Napier was not shy of speaking his mind and ruffling feathers in his accounts. Bound by M. Bell, of Richmond. With half titles in volumes V andVI. A handsomely presented early edition of this unparalleld first hand account. Collated: complete with 24 books in six volumes. Condition: In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound though with some light general wear and marking to the boards and spines. Internally, volumes I, III, and IV are lightly foxed here and there. The other volumes are generally clean. All are a little age toned towards the edges. Firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Main Foundations of Mineralogy].

Gretch Skt. Peterburg 1835 - Octavo (23x 14,5cm). XX pp., including half title and title, 488, [2]pp., with a folding table and 5 folding engraved plates; occasional very light spotting. Contemporary dark green morocco, boards with all-over blind-tooling and bordered with gilt fillets with ornate cornerpieces, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, titled in gilt with raised bands, ornate dentelles, blue endpapers, all edges gilt; very slightly rubbed. A scarce Russian mineralogical work - in a superb binding typical of noble Russian provenance and from the library of Boris Berezovsky. The work, detailed and well structured, focuses on the chemical composition of minerals, their geometry and physical properties. The text is accompanied by engraved folding plates depicting different crystalline structures and various scientific instruments. It was compiled by the German-Russian engineer Anton Shturm and is largely a translation of Ernst Friedrich Glocker's "Handbuch der Mineralogie" (Nürnberg, 1829), though Shturm added many comments of his own. The publication was funded by the St. Petersburg Mineralogical Society. It is much probably the first edition, but, because of rarity, we couldn't find much information on the work and its author. It is not included in the extensive Sinkankas collection. Worldcat locates 8 copies in Northern America, to which KVK adds one in the National Library of Finland.         Marifetname. Bulaq (Cairo), al-Matbaa ül-Kubra, 1251 AH [1835 AD].

1835. Folio (226 x 337 mm). 23, (1), 563 (1) pp. With woodcut headpiece before the text and 23 text lithographs (17 page-sized) as well as several lithographed tables (some page-sized) in the text. Text is printed in the Ottoman Turkish version of the Perso-Arabic script type, within double ruled border. Bound in contemporary brown calf with blindstamped cover ornaments and fore-edge flap (traces of repairs). Rare first printing of the famous scientific encyclopedia, published more than half a century after the death of its author, the Turkish Sufi philosopher Ibrahim Hakki Erzurumi (1703-80). The "Marifetname", or "Book of Gnosis", completed in 1756, is a compilation of astronomical, astrological, mathematical, anatomical, psychological, philosophical as well as mystical religious texts. It is famous for containing the first treatment of post-Copernican astronomy by a Muslim scholar. "Sorte d'Encyclopedie, traitant successivement des croyances musulmanes, de la cosmologie, de l'anatomie etc." (Zenker). Among the astronomical and geographical illustrations are a world map in two hemispheres, a map of the poles, the lunar phases and diagrams showing the solar system and earth's orbit. - The printing office in Bulaq, near Cairo, was set up at the command of the Viceroy of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pascha (1769-1849). Almost all its productions were printed in Ottoman Turkish with Arabic types and are today considered very rare. - Slight waterstaining to margins near beginning; a few pages near beginning and end remargined.         Tuhfat al-Muluk. Iran, dated "1151" (i.e., H 1251 = CE 1835/36).

1835. 4to (295 x 185 mm). Persian ms. on smoothed paper. 384 unnumbered ff., 21 lines to a page. With decorative, richly coloured 'unwan headpiece and 17 coloured miniatures, many raised in gilt. Highlighted words written or overscored in red. Contemporary half calf with coloured, lacquered gouache paintings to covers; inside covers show finely excuted floral designs on a red background. Lavishly illuminated manuscript on the knowledge of the world and state philosophy, the title of which might be rendered as "A Gift for Sovereigns". This important treatise was composed in 1817/18 on behalf of Prince Muhammad Taqi Mirza, son of Fath Ali Shah, the second king of the Persian Qajar dynasty, and is the major work by the Iranian philosopher Sayyid Ja'far ibn Ishaq Kashfi (c. 1775-1850), who lived in Borujerd in western Iran. Prince Muhammad Taqi (c. 1791-1848) was the eighth son of the Shah. He was regent of Borujerd but was imprisoned after the death of his father in 1834. The present manuscript with its rich illumination and magnificent binding was begun during the last years of Fath Ali Shah and not completed until after his death. Peculiarly, the manuscript is written in Naskhi rather than in the usual Persian Nastaliq script. While most Persian calligraphers could prepare their work in Naskhi upon request, this may serve to indicate that the manuscript is not a copy by a professional scribe, but rather the manuscript of a scholar (possibly by Kashfi himself?). - The ms. is dated "1151" at the end of the text, which must mean 1251, i.e. 1835/36 C.E. Written on western laid paper with several watermarks, including - in the first half - a prominent one with an eagle above a circle. The typical Qajar enamel binding shows charming cover illustrations of lavish flower bouquets with three birds; the inside covers show more conventional, stylized floral ornamentation. Several late 19th-century. ms. notes to reverse of the first leaf. With occasional edge damage professionally repaired or showing repairs by a contemporary owner (including final leaf: insignificant loss to text); colours show some bleeding to reverse. Some rubbing throughout, with the occasional stain.

Das erste Luft-Post-Schiff genant der Adler nach der Natur getreu abgebildet. No place, c. 1835.

1835. Engraving, 395:261 mm. Interesting German engraving, describing the airship built by Count Lennox in London in 1834/35. "In 1835, the comte de Lennox built the 'Eagle', a cigar-shaped airship that he displayed in London. This craft had four large paddles on either side that 'experimental sailors' were to turn back and forth like the oars of ancient ships. No evidence exists that Lennox tried to fly his invention, nor is there any reason to think it would have worked if he had tried" (Don Berliner, Aviation: Reaching for the Sky [1997], p. 33). "[The airship of 98,700 cubic feet capacity] is of interest because a small balloon or ballonet, 7,050 cubic feet contents, was placed inside the larger one for an air filling. A car 66 feet in length was rigged beneath the envelope by means of ropes eighteen inces long. Above the car the envelope was provided with a long air cushion in connection with a valve. The intention was by compression of the air in the cushion and the inner balloon, to alter the height of the airship, in order to travel with the most favourable air currents. The motive power was 20 oar propellers worked by men. The airship proved to be too heavy on completion to lift its own weight, and was destroyed by the onlookers" (George Whale, British Airships: Past, Present and Future [1919], p. 16). - Occasional insignificant browning; slightly wrinkled. Traces of folding. Cf. the like-sized drawing, dated 1838, in the ILA catalogue: Liebmann/Wahl (1912), no. 136 (probably based on this engraving, or vice-versa).

Constantinople et Athènes. Istanbul and Athens, [1880s].

1835. Oblong album (370 x 284 mm) with 47 large albumen photographic prints, generally ca. 20 x 26 to ca. 22 x 28 cm, mostly signed and captioned in the negative (in French), mounted on both sides of the album's leaves. Original half calf binding with burgundy cloth covers, title gilt to upper cover. All edges gilt. A rare souvenir album containing 40 photographs of Istanbul and 7 of Athens. The Turkish images are almost exclusively signed by the renowned studio of Guillaume Berggren (1835-1920), the Swedish-born photographer who had come to Constantinople in 1866 and remained there for the rest of his life. Berggren's photographs were particularly popular with Scandinavian, German and Austrian tourists seeking souvenirs of their Middle-Eastern journey. The present album includes landscapes and city views, famous sights such as the Galata Tower and Bridge, the Yeni Cami Mosque, the Hagia Sophia with its interiors, a "shadirvan" fountain for ritual ablutions in front of the Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Rüstem Pasha Mosque, Skutari Cemetery, views of the Golden Horn, street scenes, dervishes, the Bosporus, the French embassy in Tarabya, the city port, the steps leading up the Grand Street of Pera (where Berggren's studio was located), etc. The Greek views include Mount Lycabettus, a two-image panorama of the Acropolis, the Olympieion and the so-called Theseion (Temple of Hephaestus). - A few photographs show insignificant loss of contrast, but they are altogether in good condition, mostly preserving their original crispness. A few images captioned in pencil on the backboard. Corners of binding bumped; leather chafed and spine-ends more markedly flawed. A fine collection.

London, 1835. Two volumes. [8],xxxiii,[1],740pp. plus twenty-nine plates and maps (three colored) and two large folding maps. APPENDIX: xii,120,cxliv,cii,[ii]. plus twenty plates (twelve colored). SUPPLEMENT: [2],ii,18pp. EXPLANATION: [2],8pp. Quarto. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, gilt leather label, both volumes neatly rebacked with original spines laid down. Scattered foxing. Very good plus. A fundamental Arctic narrative, offered with the rare illustrated appendix. Despite the failure of his trip in 1818, Ross set out in 1829 in the small ship, Victory, to find a northwest passage, but the vessel had to be abandoned in 1832. Ross and his party were rescued in the summer of 1833 in Lancaster Sound. In the meantime Capt. George Back had set out in search of Ross. Back's account of his explorations was published the year after this volume appeared. The greatest scientific yield of the trip was the discovery of the Magnetic Pole. The many attractive plates are listed in detail in Abbey. A number of them depict the natives and events during the voyage. The lengthy appendix adds significantly to the work and includes additional color plates of Eskimos and a vocabulary of the Eskimo language, as well as a report about the natural history of the Arctic. This set is remarkable for having both the rare SUPPLEMENT TO CAPTAIN SIR JOHN ROSS'S NARRATIVE... by John Braithwaite (an engineer who supplied the steam boilers for Ross' ship) and EXPLANATION AND ANSWER TO MR. BRAITHWAITE'S SUPPLEMENT, Ross' incredulous rebuttal to Braithwaite's accusations regarding the ship's failure. The second pamphlet is of the greatest rarity, and to find the set with both supplements is notable. ABBEY 636. ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY 14866. LANDE 1462. HILL 1490. SMITH 8792. TPL 1808. SABIN 73381.
