Paris 1835 - John Wilton-Ely plate 993Piranesi\'s magnificent rendering of ancient Roman vases. The watermark that is present is number 93 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1182 and is dated in the mid 1830s Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi\'s own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: Ficacci plate 838, Image Size : , Platemark Size : 538x380 (m

The Life, Exile and Conversations of the Emperor Napoleon

London; 1835-1836: For Henry Colburn First issue. Four volumes in eight consisting of the original 24 weekly parts, illustrated with eight frontispieces, seventeen engravings, two large folding maps, and one folding plan and tissue guards. There is a notice to the subscribers mentioning the fact that while there is a total of 20 proposed plates, the remaining three volumes will contain 5 more plates, for a total of 25 plates. All front and rear wrappers are bound in the rear of each volume with one wrapper used as title pages within the second parts. All bound in ¾ blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, raised bands with compartments lettered and embellished with gilt, top edges gilt. Some minor chipping to heads, darkening to edges, some cosemetic color touch ups added. Interior clean and bright without tears, foxing, previous owner's names or bookplates. A handsome set and quit scarce. The last set sold at auction in 2006. OCLC records two holding of only eight parts in four volumes. An important work by the Count Las Cases who followed Napoleon into exile at St. Helena. For 18 months he recorded his conversations with Napoleon on his principles of warfare, his identification of the French Revolution with the Empire, his political philosophy, and his sentiments on religion and philosophy. A letter of complaint about Napoleon’s treatment led to Las Cases’ deportation and to the seizure of his manuscript by the British government. Forbidden to enter England, he traveled in Germany and Belgium until he was allowed to return to France after the death of Napoleon in 1822. Las Cases represents the 17th military generation of his family, which began with the reign of Louis VIII in 1223. During the time between the reign of Louis VIII and Napoleon's exile in 1815, the Las Cases family was intimately involved in the majority of the European conflicts that occurred, being closely tied to the monarchy and writing their biographies including that of Columbus..

Paris, Lacour, 1835-1848. ATLAS: 102 lithographed plates of which 84 finely hand-coloured. Contemporary half cloth. A complete copy has pp. lvi, 361, with 144 plates of which 117 coloured. The work, published in 21 parts, is the most splendid publication on cephalopods and is one of rarest natural history books. We have only sold one copy which was in 1953. The 102 plates we offer were published in 1834 and 1835 and comprise parts 1-11. The remaining plates were published in 1839-1842. The work is important as it describes numerous new species and is the first important compilation of cephalopods. The publication of the work was particularly lengthy and confused as Férussac died in 1836 and Orbigny had left for an eight year long voyage to South America. The plates are incredibly impressive drawn by the best French artists of the period such as J.G. Prêtre, A. Prévosts, Oudart and Werner. Many of the plates have been heightened with gum Arabic. The atlas is preserved in a contemporary half cloth binding, lacking a part from the lower spine. Some plates are loose. Apart from some minor foxing the plates are in fine condition.//Nissen ZBI, 1347.

Eyewitness account of the New York fire of 1835

prev 4to sheets. 3 pages of manuscript. Near the intersection of Hanover Street and Stone Street on December 16, 1835, a fire began in a five-story warehouse. Fed by high winds, the fire quickly spread through the city, as sub freezing temperatures prevented the use of fire hoses. After fifteen hours, firefighters were able to stop the progress of the fire by blowing up a series of buildings. This 1835 blaze was the worst in the history of New York. It destroyed over fifty acres of land, 700 buildings, and many of the remnants of the original city. Only two people perished, but financial losses were estimated around twenty million dollars. Most of the insurance companies for local properties immediately went bankrupt. This is a moving, emotional, three page letter written two days after the fire by an eyewitness who sees the hand of a “wise Providence” in the devastation of a “City, bloated in wealth, forgetful of daily favors.” “Property and merchandise to an incalculable amount has been consumed... And those who foolishly believed or fancied themselves secured by Insurance have since discovered that all the Principal offices are more than doubly ruined... Many worthy individuals, who by their industry and economy had acquired a sufficiency, have in a moment, as it were, been deprived of their All. And a vast number of pampered, rich, overgrown Individuals, who boast of their wealth, and feel their only importance, in the distinction which it created, have been reached in a way, least expected, and shaken and sifted after the manner of wheat...”& &

. Traduzione italiana di M.G. Levi. - Venedig, Antonelli, 1835, Gr.Fol. (515 x 335 mm), (4), XXVIII, 408 pp, mit 63 Farbstichtafeln mit Retuschen, Halblereinband; Text stockfl. u. gebräunt, Tafeln frisch.. Erste italienische Ausgabe! - First Italian Edition - The largest and most spectacular of the early classics in dermatology, with hand-colored illustrations unsurpassed for their quality of execution, if not for their aesthetic appeal. This work is also containing for the first time Alibert's famous "family tree" of dermatoses. The first-class illustrations were produced about 160 years ago and are not only the equal of modern colour photographs, and they deliberately emphasized characteristics to the diseases illustrated. This book, one of the finest works of its kind, was produced at great expense. Most of the splendid, delicately hand-coloured engravings were drawn by Moreau-Valville and engraved by Tresca. These illustrations are life-size or near life-size, and are of great clarity. Jean-Louis- Marc, le Baron Alibert (1768-1837), was made physician for skin diseases in 1803, and the first to systematically teach dermatology in France. He introduced the first natural method of classifying skin diseases. He was the first to describe mycosis fungoides, keloid, etc., and introduced many new terms, such as "syphilides", "dermatoses", "dermatolysis", etc. - The following illustrations were new: the tree of dermatoses in colour, erysipelas, variola and varicella, measles, scarlet fever and what is referred to as 'roseole idiopathique'. The new illustrations were executed by CHOUBARD. The technique used throughout is that strikingly fine coloured stipple engraving, generously assisted by the artist's brush." - Ehring, Hautkrankheiten, p.107; Garrison, History of Medicine, pp.417ff.; Pusey, The Hist. of Dermatology, p.74-78; Shelley-Crisey, Classics in Dermatology, p.31f.; Richter, Geschichte der Dermatologie, p.201 f.

Contemporary boards (a bit worn). Famous and beautifully illustrated South American expedition. "After his visiting Chile and Peru Poeppig journeyed down the Amazon river to Parà. Part of his scientific collection was lost but he managed to save an enormous quantity. The account of the expedition and the botanical surveys he published are comparable to the work of Humboldt" (Barba de Moraes)./"Der sächsische Botaniker Poeppig lebte schon einige Jahre in den Vereinigten Staaten, bevor er Ende 1826 in Baltimore zu einer Südamerikareise aufbrach. The fine large plates are by Joseph Anton Sedlmayr, Joh. Nepomuk Ott and Ignaz Bergmann after drawings by Poeppig.//The two text vols have considerable foxing and occasional waterstaining, and do not contain the folded map as well as the sheet of music (lacking in most copies). Carved Oak Alphabet Stick

(Germany), 1835. A dark-stained oak stick, carved with a Roman-letter alphabet in relief on one side. Two opposite sides are decorated with floral and foliate designs, and the side opposite of the alphabet is carved with the name "Maria Magdalena Buder" and the date 1835. The body has a square, tapering shape, and it appears that this was a teacher's pointer, used as an educational tool. The carving has a naïve, folk-art quality, and the item was perhaps given as a gift from students to their instructor. Measures 6 3/4 inches in length (68.5 cm), in very fine condition.

His chief gift was for comedy, to which he brought not only a complete mastery of the traditional devices but also a new, robust buffo manner characterized by a wealth of bouncing allegretto melodies, mostly in duple time, and a not infrequent use of folktune."
