1835 - Movable figure of a black Arabian horse mounted to a hand-colored landscape backdrop that measures 10 by 8 3/4 inches (251x196mm). The horse is articulated using a series of metal pins that allow it to be manipulated into various positions. Accompanied by eight interchangeable rider figures, all of which are hand-colored. These have a tab on the reverse side that allows them to slip onto the horse. The riders consist of two women and six men. The ladies are shown riding side-saddle and wearing full period costume. Among the men are a jockey, a Prussian Hussar, an officer with a plumed hat, and several gentlemen with various costumes, riding crops and saddle styles. This very rare paper toy is virtually unknown to reference works: a single mention of it appears in the Königlich Württembergisches allgemeines Amts- und Intelligenz-Blatt for the year 1835. No maker is identified, but a small monogram appearing at the bottom of the title label on the front of the original marbled paper slipcase shows the initials "JMB." Some trivial rubbing to slipcase, minor creases to background sheet, else fine.

Neue Auflage. 2 Teile in 1 Band.

Berlin Reimer -36 1835 - (21 x 13 cm). XVI, 456 S./ VIII, 392 S. Mit 8 gefalteten gestochenen Tafeln und 1 gefalteten Tabelle. Moderner Pappband im Stil der Zeit. Zweite deutsche Ausgabe. - Stellenweise etwas stockfleckig. Die Tafeln teils etwas knapp beschnitten bzw. angeschnitten. Ein Blatt mit hinterlegter Fehlstelle (ohne Textverlust). Insgesamt sauber und gut erhalten. - Eneström 102 B2; vgl.         Flora Japonica sive Plantae, quas in imperio Japonico collegit, descripsit, ex parte in ipsis locis pingendas curavit...

Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden), apud auctorem, 1835-1870. 2 volumes, bound in one. Folio (395 x 300mm). pp. (4), 193, (1); (2), 89, (1), (2), with lithographed frontispiece and lithographed dedication to Anne Paulowna Grande Duchesse de Russie and 151 lithographed plates of which 149 beautifully hand-coloured. Contemporary green half morocco, spine with gilt lines and lettering in 6 compartments. A very fine copy of the most important and first colour-plate flora of Japan. It is the second flora of Japan, preceeded only by Thunberg. Complete copies are very scarce as the work was published over a long period. It was published with plain or coloured plates. The colour-plate issue is particularly rare. Plates 124bis and 137 were never coloured. The 'Flora Japonica' was written in collaboration with J.G. Zuccarini and the last 5 parts of the second volume are by F.A. Miquel.//Von Siebold was the most important European scientist who almost single-handedly put Japanese studies on the European academic map. In 1823 he was posted to Japan as a surgeon to the Dutch factory on Deshima. He played a significant role in introducing Japan to the West and in his introduction of Western science to Japan. The Dutch were the only western nation to trade with Japan from 1639 until the opening of Japan by Perry. Von Siebold (1796-1866) was a German surgeon in service of the Dutch East India Company. /His main interest, however, focused on the study of Japanese fauna and flora. He collected as much material as he could. Starting a small botanical garden behind his home (there was not much room on the small island) von Siebold amassed over 1,000 native plants. In a specially built glasshouse he cultivated the Japanese plants to endure the Dutch climate. Local Japanese artists drew images of these plants, creating botanical illustrations and images of the daily life in Japan, which complemented his ethnographic collection. He hired Japanese hunters to track rare animals and collect specimens. Many specimens were collected with the help of his Japanese collaborators Keisuke Ito (1803-1901), Mizutani Sugeroku (1779-1833), Ohkochi Zonshin (1796-1882) and Katsuragawa Hoken (1797-1844), a physician to the Shogun. As well, von Siebold's assistant and later successor, Heinrich Bürger (1806-1858), proved to be indispensable in carrying on von Siebold's work in Japan. /Von Siebold first introduced to Europe such familiar garden-plants as the Hosta and the Hydrangea otaksa. Unknown to the Japanese, he was also able to smuggle out germinative seeds of tea plants to the botanical garden Buitenzorg in Batavia. Through this single act, he started the tea culture in Java, a Dutch colony at the time./The last copy sold of this great rarity was at Christie's New York 'An Important Botanical Library' 5 June, 1997 and made $ 118.000. That copy was nice but not in such a pristine condition as the copy we are offering now. //Nissen BBI, 1842.

I met your cousin at Madame Graham's and I begged him to tell you that I had gone to the Bureau des Italiens to try to grant your wish. therefore, if the day of the first performance falls on a day when the halls are occupied almost entirely by subscribers, you'll get priority.         Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on small 8vo black bordered mourning stationery, Portland Place, Nov. 29, 1898

Lister writes to Archibald Geikie (1835-1924), prominent Scottish geologist who investigated much of the British Isles and worked on volcanic activity. In full, "I am much obliged to you. I have heard from Lord Curzon that he will reply & I have further learnt that he takes the precedence of Lord Kitchener by virtue of prior appointment. When I hear from Lord Kitchener, I will let you know...." Signed, "Lister." Lister references Lord Curzon, (1859 -1925), British Conservative statesman, Viceroy of India, and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He is perhaps most associated with the Curzon Line he proposed as the eastern frontier of Poland. He was passed over as Prime Minister in 1923 in favor of Stanley Baldwin. He also refers to British military leader Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850 -1916). Joseph Lister and Archibald Geikie were both members of the Royal Society. Lister succeeded Geikie as Foreign Secretary of the Society and in 1895 became its president (through 1900). On November 5, 1898, a banquet was given to honor General Kitchener, Commander of the Egyptian Army, who had won fame for his success at the Battle of Omdurman, taking control of the Sudan. According to The New York Times of November 5, 1898, the "sword of honor… in recognition of his defeat of the dervishes at Omdurman" was given to Kitchener at a banquet held by the Lord Mayor of London. Among the attendees at the banquet, according to The New York Times as well as many other newspapers of the day, was "Joseph Lister, President of the Royal Society," and "Lord Curzon of Kedleston," the "newly appointed viceroy of India." According to "Lord Curzon in India… Selections from his Speeches…." (New York, Macmillan, 1906), Curzon arrived in Bombay to begin as viceroy on December 30, 1898 after a passage that "took three weeks." The formal hand over took place on January 6, 1899. Shortly before his departure from England, "Lord Curzon was entertained at dinner on November 7, 1898 by The Royal Societies' Club at their House Club in St. James's Street." In his speech at the dinner, Curzon thanked his hosts, saying "I have the privilege of meeting and being entertained by a number of gentlemen who are interested in many branches of scientific inquiry, and not least in that one with which alone I can claim to have any practical connection… geography." By virtue of these dinners, meetings and banquets, Lister and Geikie who had known one another for many years as colleagues and members of the Royal Society, encountered and perhaps grew to know both Kitchener and Curzon.

A very rare booklet by Charrière about his improved rowel saw combined with a trepan! - - First Print - A very rare illustrated publication about a very important and technical neurosurgical saw invented by Charrière and Thompson in 1835 and here described in details. - Furthermore, this booklet is one of Charrière's first publications (the fourth according to the bio-bibliography on Frédéric Charrière by Jimmy Drulhon). - - "In 1816, at the age of 13, Charrière arrived in Paris as an apprentice cutler. Born on 19 March 1803 at Cerniat en Gruyere, in the Swiss canton of Fribourg, where his uncle practiced the same trade, he was raised by his grandfather because his parents had moved to Paris, where his father was employed as a bank clerk. In 1820, after the death of his master, the young Swiss cutler took over the workshop, then situated in the courtyard of St.-Jean-de-Latran on the left bank of the Seine (gone today, as a consequence of urban development). In 1826, Charrière married Madeleine Elisa Berrurier, the seventeen-year-old daughter of a butcher. According to the Notice biographique of Dr. Achille Chéreau (1817-1885), the real commencement of Charrière's career dates from his introduction to Guillaume Dupuytren (1777-1839), surgeon-in-chief at the Hôtel Dieu hospital in Paris. Dupuytren made him "his personal supplier, furnishing him with models to emulate, instilling, feeding, in a sense, the spirit of invention and innovation that consumed him, bringing him every morning to the hospital to familiarize him with the operations and to stir his genius for designing instruments. Charrière appreciated from the very outset the advantage of seeing his instruments in action, in trying them or seeing them tried on cadavers." - Under Dupuytren's patronage, Charrière's business affairs prospered. Beginning around 1825, according to Dr. Chéreau, "nineteen out of twenty surgeons consigned to him the fabrication of their ordinary instruments, as well as their experimental ones." Important orders came from French and foreign ministries and the Conseil général des hospices de Paris named Charrière principal contractor for prosthetic devices. In 1833 he moved the firms to no.9, rue de I'Ecole-de-Médecine (today these premises are occupied by the Auzoux enterprise, maker of anatomical and natural history models). At the 1834 Exposition of national industry, Charrière received his first medal, which would be followed by innumerable other distinctions. The jury stated that, "rising from simple cutlery artisan, M. Charrière has become head of the largest and most important surgical instrument making establishment. He utilizes, with equal success, French and English steel. His instruments enjoy a reputation for excellence, even superiority, as proclaimed by many surgeons at our hospitals." - In 1837, during a visit to England, Charrière mastered the production processes of the British cutlery industry. From that moment on, he never again feared competition from across the Channel. - Praise lavished upon him in the published works of physicians and surgeons, in addition to that of expositions, augmented the renown of the instrument maker. Alfred A.L.M. Velpeau (1795-1868), for example, illustrated many of Charrière's instruments in his 'Nouveaux elements de médecine operatorie'. Similarly, in the work of Claude Bernard and Charles Huette, one finds only the instruments of the Charrière firm. - At the close of 1842, the enterprise moved across the street, to no. 6, rue de I'École-de-Médecine. The showroom and adjacent workshop were considerably more spacious. According to Dr. Chéreau, who knew Charrière quite well, "a large glass storefront facing the street permitted passersby to witness the magical transformation of steel; Dupuytren, personified by a bust of .         [TWO PRINTED LAND GRANT DOCUMENTS, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, FOR A FORTY-ACRE PLOT IN CHEROKEE COUNTY]

[Cherokee County, Ga.], 1835. Two sheets, approximately 10 x 8 inches, attached at bottom with ribbon and wax seal. Old folds. First sheet separating at folds. Second sheet separated at folds; top half in several pieces, bottom half still attached to first sheet. Light soiling from wax seal. About good. A pair of documents concerning a land grant for forty acres of land in Cherokee County, Georgia, surveyed in 1832 and granted in 1835, based on the Land Lottery of 1832. The first document grants forty acres of land in Cherokee County to Sarah Dubose, widow, from Burke County. The land, situated in the fourteenth district of the first section, was surveyed May 31, 1832, and the plot is mapped out at the top of the sheet. It is signed by Willim W. Carnes, Comptroller General, and Thomas Haynes, Treasurer, on either side of the map. The second document, dated Sept. 19, 1835, affirms the grant as according to the "Act to lay out the gold region on the lands at present in the occupancy of the Cherokee Indians, into small lots, and dispose of the same by separate lottery," passed on Dec. 24, 1831. The whole is signed on the front below the ribbon with the signature of Wilson Lumpkin, governor. Georgia used a lottery system to distribute land taken from the Cherokee and Creek Indians. The lot sizes varied, with the largest being up to 490 acres and the smallest being 40 acre lots distributed during the Gold Lottery of 1832. An act passed by the Georgia General Assembly on Dec. 24, 1831, authorized approximately one third of the 160-acre land districts previously set aside for the sixth lottery to be designated as gold districts and divided into 40-acre lots, to be distributed in a separate lottery. This separate lottery was the seventh land lottery, known as the Gold Lottery of 1832. The Cherokees went to court to prevent distribution of lands which they claimed belonged to them, and won the case (Worcester v. Georgia), but Andrew Jackson ignored the decision in his zeal for Indian relocation. Sarah Dubose was the widow of a Revolutionary War soldier who received several plots of land during the lottery.

      - London: Ackermann, Weale, and Dolman, 1835-1851. 7 vols. in 2, large 4to, bound in full green and full red morocco, very richly stamped in gold and with onlays in green on the red volume, and the green volume with the Order of the Garter device on both covers; boards bevelled (red volume) or rolled (green volume), backstrips richly gilt, all edges on both volumes deeply gauffred. In virtually flawless condition. Full collations and plate counts as per Fowler (see below). An absolutely astonishing collection of all but one of Pugin's major works, perhaps his own copies bound for him in unsigned bindings of the very highest quality and with his name stamped at the foot of the backstrip of the red volume. The later bookplate of Samuel Joshua Cooper is pasted in both volumes over an earlier bookplate (perhaps Pugin's?). The only significant volume not present is his controversial book "Contrasts", privately issued in 1836. For detailed descriptions of each volume see Fowler 264, 261, 263, 262, 266, 268, and 272.The Bookpress suggests that the first four works were in fact issued together; perhaps the remaining three also were, as they were certainly reprinted together later by Bohn. Weinreb confirms that in his monumental "The Arts Applied" (1975). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Fragment on Mackintosh: being strictures on some passages in the dissertation by Sir James Mackintosh, prefixed to the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

London: Baldwin and Cradock, 1835 - Octavo (217 x 131 mm). Recent quarter calf, red morocco label, marbled sides and edges. General light foxing. A very good tall copy. First edition of the last published work of James Mill (1773-1836), Scottish political philosopher, staunch Benthamite, a key influence on David Ricardo, and father of John Stuart Mill. The Fragment is a stinging attack on Sir James Mackintosh's Dissertation on the Progress of Ethical Philosophy (1830), in which both Bentham's radicalism and Mill's Essays on Government (1820) were assailed by the whig polemicist. "With its withering sarcasm and unremitting ridicule, Mill's Fragment is a disagreeable and intemperate book. But it makes an effective case for utilitarian politics and moral philosophy" (ODNB). John Stuart Mill's biographer Michael St. John Packe writes amusingly that "'Old Mill' was in a gingery mood, having just effectively satisfied his long-felt desire to 'touch up Mackintosh before I die'. He had touched him up to such effect that, out of common decency to the dead, he had been forced to hold up publication of the book until the old philosopher had mouldered in his grave a year or two" (The Life of John Stuart Mill, 1954, p. 197). Jahrhundert. Kuhn in TRE). - First edition of the important and groundbreaking work, which caused a long conflict in portestant theology.

*** The first edition of both parts of Tocqueville's famous masterpiece uniformly bound in a very nice contemporary half calf and marbled boards. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Breslau: Josef Max & Komp. 4to (25.7 cm, 9.9"). 3 vols. I: xx, (iii)–xvi, 538 pp. II: xv, [1], 505, [1] pp. III: xii, 435, [1] pp.. 1835–47 Uncommon first edition: The first three volumes of this important collection of documents pertaining to the history of Silesia. Stenzel (1792–1854), a German historian, was for some years the archivist of the Silesian provincial archives and made excellent use of his position; this work offers a great deal of seldom-seen and valuable primary source material, including accounts of St. Hedwig, Duchess of Silesia, and Dorothea Beier, the 15th-century mystic, along with the Chronica Polonorum and Samuel Benjamin Klose's Darstellung der inneren Verhältnisse der Stadt Breslau vom Jahre 1458 bis zum Jahre 1526. Additional volumes continued to be published for many years, under the stewardship of other editors; Stenzel was responsible for I through V. Recent black-flecked paper–covered boards, spines with printed paper title and volume labels. Some upper edges in vol. I and lower corners in vol. II bumped; all edges stained red except for vol. III, which has speckled edges. Vol. III (only) with light offsetting/show-through from print; in fact a clean, nice set..
