Autograph letter signed, to his sons Victor Gifford and John Woodhouse Audubon, concerning the publication of the second volume of his Ornithological Biography

Edinburgh: 6 December 1834. 1p., single 4to sheet. (10 x 8 inches). (Backed with paper at an early date, small loss from opening touching two words). Important letter by Audubon to his sons, concerning the publication of his Ornithological Biography and shipping bird skins and watercolours back to America. The unpublished letter reads, in part: "I revised the introduction last evening with [William] Mac Gillevray, therefore the book you may conclude is nearly out! We think that by Tuesday next it will be before the readers here; at least some copies of it. Charles Black and father will be agents here on the same terms as before, but I will leave 200 copies only with them, 20 with Hill and will send a proportional number to our agents according to the demands that may be expected at their respective places. All the rest I shall ship by steamer to Havell. A review will appear on the 1st of Jany. in Jameson's Journal and I believe another in Blackwood's Magazine. We ship you now by the Royal William steamer one large new box containing 352 bird skins, which take great care of, all the mss of the 1st and 2d vol. Biographies, my Journals, sundry books, 55 original small drawings including several of eggs (10 it seems were not sent here by you), 18 middle size (2 wanting) and 20 large ones, drawing paper, brushes, &c &c, 24 plates water birds, our government letters ... " The remainder of the letter concerns their impending travel back to America. and closes, "I regret that we have to call on Mrs. G[ifford] at Duffields for I have much to do in the way of Drawing and writing the whole of this winter..." As early as November 1826, Audubon had begun thinking about the text which should accompany his monumental engraved illustrations of birds. He noted in his journal: "I shall publish the letterpress in a separate book, at the same time with the illustrations and shall accompany the descriptions of the birds with many anecdotes and accounts of localities connected with the birds themselves ..." (M.R. Audubon Audubon and his journals 1897, vol.I, p.163). Audubon had taken the decision to publish the letterpress separately because, according to British copyright law, had the letterpress accompanied the engravings, Audubon would have been obliged to deposit a copy of the work in each of the nine copyright libraries in the United Kingdom. This would have placed a strain on the economics of the production of the book. Work on the text did not begin in earnest until the end of 1830, just as Havell was nearing the completion of the engraving of the first 100 drawings. In the present letter, Audubon discusses the completion of the second volume of the work.

[GRAY WASH SKETCH OF MEN BUILDING AN IGLOO DURING THE SECOND ROSS EXPEDITION TO THE ARCTIC]

[Np. ca. 1834].. 5 x 3 1/2 inches. Bright and clean. Mounted on stiff paper. Fine. Matted, 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. A gray wash sketch of three men building an igloo, while another group of three men and one husky dog stand off to the side. In the lower margin of the stiff paper upon which the illustration is mounted, a caption reads: "The Ross Expedition." This drawing is likely from Ross' second expedition, during which he and his crew camped over three consecutive winters from 1830 to 1833. While the illustration is not reproduced as a plate in Ross' official report, NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE... (1835), it is similar in style to some of the published views. Ross made ample use of native construction methods, at one point overseeing the construction of a virtual arctic compound, complete with mess hall and officers' quarters, during their final winter on the ice in 1832-33. Though it is possible the drawing was done in the warmth of the expedition's winter quarters, it was likely composed after the expedition's return to Britain. Wash was rarely a favored medium in a climate where the seasonal highs seldom reached ten degrees Fahrenheit. Original art work concerning the early arctic expeditions is superlatively rare.

        Helen. A Tale...in Three Volumes

London: Richard Bentley, 1834 First edition. Contemporary tan calf. Covers ruled in blind, with gilt armorial device in center of front covers. Gilt spine with black calf labels. Three volumes, octavo. . Bound without the half-titles. Binding extremities lightly rubbed, a few scuffs, intermittent light foxing, some pencil scribbling on back endpapers of Volume I. A very good set overall. This was Edgeworth's last novel, and one of her most popular books. Emily Lawless calls it "a novel of a very much more modern type than any other by the same hand. In reading it we are aware that the eighteenth century has at last dropped out of sight, and that we are well out upon the nineteenth, not indeed as yet 'Victorian', but in a sort of midway region, on the road to that superior epoch" (Maria Edgeworth, 1904).

Sismondi (Geneva, 1773-1842) was a profound economist, writer on politics, and history, whose works were perceived and debated by Marx. Sismondi here pleads for a universal right to vote for all as a guarantee of the best government for all, that can prevent injustices and inequalities. Not in NUC, Einaudi, Goldsmiths', or Kress; OCLC locates two copies, at Cambridge, and in the London Library, RLIN adds one copy in the Swiss National Library.

Brunet VI, Tab.6487. Great Flower Books (ediz.ital.) p.124. Niccoli p.320. Nissen BBI, 1527n. Plesch, 599.

PRESSO PIETRO PATERNO 1834 In 8. Dim. 22,5x15 cm. Pp. 199. Legatura in buone condizioni. Beauitufl edition of 1834 of this scarce work about the Saint Filomena from Rome (IV century) written by the Canon Francesco di Lucia. The work is made up of three tomes boudn together and it is complete. The name and cult of Saint Filomena was born with the finding in 1802 of some bones in a grave in the Catacombe di Priscilla in Rome. For a fault of interpretation in the grave, Saint Filomena was considered martyre, after that taken away from the calendar in 1960's. In 1805 the Canon de Lucia asks for some relics of remainings found in May 1802 (reduced in dust and fragments) for the building of a new altar in his church in Mugnano del Cardinale. The remainings, transported from Rome to Naples arrived in Mugnano the 11th of August. In 1827 the Pope Leone XII gave to the church of Mugnano three terracotta slabs. In the work De Lucia describes the wonder accompained the arrival of relics in the church as miracles (people not died), usage of senses, prodigious cares, favours, apparitions of Santa Filomena, the images of the Saint changed, changes in items belonged to the Saint etc... In the frontspice engraving with the portrait of the Saint engraved by Raffaello D'Angelo and five planches inside. Very beautiful copy published in the precious blue paper. Toghether with the work a little image of 1830 circa representing Saint Philomena. Collationed and complete. Scarce copy, high value Half leather cover with golden title in the spine in fair general conditions with wearings and missing parts in the edges and spine; paltes almost detached. Binding in good conditions with cracks. Inside pages are in good conditions with foxings and humidity stains. Little worming in the last page of the index with no loss of text.

Illustrations of the Game Birds of North America Chiefly the size of Nature.

Edinburgh, Frazer & Co.; Dublin, William Curry Jnr. & Co.; Glasgow, John Smith & Son; London, Smith, Elder & Co., 1834. Folio (546 x 410mm). With engraved title by James Turvey, engraved dedication, and 16 finely hand-coloured engraved plates after Thomas Brown, A.Rider, J.B.Kidd, and others, engraved by W.H.Lizars and others, a few minor restorations to plate edges, plates laid on old tissue and watermarked 1831-1835. Publisher's brown cloth gilt with embossed pattern, morocco title-label on upper cover, rebacked to match (in a modern cloth box). Extremely rare. The scarcest book on American Game-Birds. According to Walter Faxon only three copies of this work could be found in 1919, and only one copy (with 15 of the 16 plates) is listed as having sold at auction in the last one hundred years (Sotheby's 10 December 1909, lot 951). Although this work essentially contains a selection of the plates from Brown's larger work 'Illustrations of American Ornithology', 1831-35, they are coloured in a softer, less bold manner that appears to give a more life like appearance. The 'Game Birds' was issued before the completion of the 'American Ornithology'. Zimmer, p.102; Fine Bird Books (1990) p. 82; W.Faxon, The Auk 36, 1919, p. 626; Nissen IVB, 153.

Paris, Rousseau/ Baillière, (1834-1880). 11 volumes (bound in 13). Royal-8vo. With 902 (5 in coloured copies) fine handcoloured engraved plates. Later speckled calf with 2 red gilt lettered labels. One of the most desirable works on shells. It was published over a period of almost half a century and especially the last 27 parts published by P. Fischer from 1873-1879 are rare. In the monograph on the Turbo by Fischer published in 1873 the text (128 pages) is in a recent reprint as well as plates 37-42. The 11 page text of the genus Phasianella is also in a reprint. Some plates of the genus Turbo have been trimmed with some slight loss of the illustration. A few plates have the upper right corner very slightly chipped. Kiener made use of the famous Delessert collection and that of the Natural History Museum of Paris, together the largest and most varied fund of conchological material on the continent. "He soon put it to good use; and in 1834 he published the first part of his 'Spécies ...' This exquisitely illustrated iconography, started before the Sowerbys and Reeve began to issue theirs, appeared at intervals up to 1879, when eleven volumes had been completed. All devoted to the illustration of marine gastopods with the exception of the tenth volume, which includes a monograph on the bivalve genus Thracia. The eleventh volume is the work of Paul Fischer. All the illustrations are by celebrated French engravers and artists of the day." (Dance. Hist. of Shell Collecting p. 137). This beautifully illustrated iconography on shells is still a valuable work of reference because of the new species described in it. The work is complete with 902 handcoloured plates as indicated in the last volume, where the publisher 'Ballière' informs the reader that the work consists of 165 parts with a total of 902 plates. Nissen, however, calls for a 20bis plate in the Cypraea section which, indeed, some copies have. Most likely only the early issues have this 'bis' plate, which was probably replaced by a corrected plate 20 in later issues. In the text this 'bis' plate is not mentionned. Provenance: With the occasional stamp of Richard I. Johnson. Nissen ZBI, 2183; B.M.(Nat. Hist.)II, 978.

- "In 1723 forceps had come into general use. Delighted with the beneficial invention, French and German obstetricians ... applied them on every occasion, even when there was no need for them. One might have thought that 'Nature had abandoned its delivery job and left it to the obstetrician's instrument' (Boer). Against this busy use of instruments Boer employed his patient procedure of waiting and relying on the natural forces of the organism. In limiting instrumental and manual intervention to the cases in which such assistance was indicated and in 'restoring the delivery power of Nature to its rights,' he became the founder of the new obstetrical natural method ... His guiding principle ... was that the child should be received from the mother, not torn from her" (Lesky, Vienna Medical School, pp. 52-53). - Titel leicht stockfleckig.         West Point, from above Washington Valley looking down the River

New York: Parker & Clover, 1834. Hand-coloured aquatint after George Cooke. In good condition, but laid onto thin wove paper. 20 1/8 x 27 1/16 inches. First state of this spectacular image of the Hudson and West Point: focusing 'on the beauty of the Hudson River and the mountains that border it on either side ... a celebration of nature, highlighting the ever-changing drama staged by mountains, water, and sky' (Deak) William James Bennett (c. 1787-1844) was born in England and received his training at the Royal Academy. He emigrated to the United States in 1826, and is best known for his views of American cities, including the Hudson Valley Region, Niagara Falls, and numerous port cities such as New York, Charleston, and Buffalo. With the arrival of William Bennett and several other émigré artists such as William Guy Wall, and John Hill, the quality of aquatint engraving in America was elevated to a level equaling, or perhaps even surpassing, that of European printmakers. This print was published at the beginning of an important period in the history of American topographical-view making. 'Bennett etched four prints after paintings by George Cooke (1793-1849) in his series of views of American cities ... American-born George Cooke was a prolific painter of portraits, views, and historical subjects. He painted this scene of West Point in 1832 after he had left New York ... for .. the Catskill mountains' (Deak William James Bennett p.78). 'Cooke benefited from the remarkable craftsmanship of ... Bennett, who endowed the rendering with a radiant quality' (Deak Picturing America p.277). R.A. An excellent copy of a scarce work.ABPC records only one complete copy at auction since 1923; an incomplete copy with only ten plates was sold in 1955. OCLC/KVK note only three institutional copies, at Harvard, NYPL, and Austria State Library."Also due to the trend of the illustration of the Neapolitan folklore, but more didactic, it is the lithographic album titled Tarantella. Neapolitan Dance, drawn entirely by Dura [1805-1878], published in Naples in 1833, and lithographed by Gatti in 1834. Dura's [Souvenir de la Tarantella Napolitaine], a very important document for the reconstruction of the Neapolitan tarantella, presents nineteen plates, accompanied by captions that explain, step by step, all the different phases of the dance. The style of the illustrations is basic: two dancers, drawn not without a certain grace and accuracy, move isolated on a white background completely devoid of any decoration or pittoresco. In the mid-1830s Dura became ass'ciated with Gatti, founding a lithographic establishment that soon became one of the most important in Naples. The brand of 'Gatti and Dura' published prints, calendars, atlases, graphic novels and works of popular nature, such as almanacs and miscellanies" (Encyclopedia Treccani.it, L'Enciclopedia Italiana).
