THE BEAUTIES OF FLORA, WITH BOTANIC AND POETIC ILLUSTRATIONS: BEING A SELECTION OF FLOWERS DRAWN FROM NATURE, ARRANGED EMBLEMATICALLY, WITH DIRECTIONS FOR COLOURING THEM

Heath Hall, near Wakefield: Eliza Eve Gleadall, 1834-36. FIRST EDITION. These volumes feature information on the symbolic meaning in the Victorian language of flowers, on poetry inspired by flowers, and on the colors and techniques one should use for botanical illustration. But apart from this content, the set for us today is of interest because of the beautifully colored plates. The engravings are not arranged by name or scientific class, but by the sentiment the flower represents (Passionflower relates Religious Superstition; Lily of the Valley to Purity and Return of Happiness), and each illustration is accompanied by two to four pages of letterpress. After giving some background information on the origin of the flower's name, recounting legends or anecdotes, and quoting verse, Miss Gleadall tells aspiring artists what colors to use when painting any of the various subjects, and offers advice on shading and finishing. This is the only work published by Miss Gleadall, an instructor at a school for young ladies in Yorkshire. Flower painting was considered an appropriate pastime--or "chaste recreation" in the author's words--for well-bred young women. Former owners the Misses Templar apparently used this work as intended: tiny spots of paint on the verso of some plates suggest the book was being consulted while the would-be artist tried to reproduce its results. This work is not common, and when it appears in the marketplace, it is typically in poor condition.. Vol. I: 347 x 252 mm. (13 5/8 x 9 7/8"); vol. II: 365 x 267 mm. (14 3/8 x 10 1/2"). Two volumes. Privately printed (for approximately 124 subscribers) FIRST EDITION. Original patterned green cloth with gilt embellishment on front cover, rebacked. Titles with flower garland and 41 LOVELY HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES. Front free endpapers with ownership inscriptions of Mary and Jane Templar. Five names added to list of subscribers in a neat copperplate hand. Dunthorne 123; Nissen 715. Bindings a bit soiled, extremities rubbed, but the rebacked volumes quite solid. Fore edge of dedication leaf and one plate a little frayed, occasional minor stains or smudges, but generally an excellent copy internally, mostly clean and fresh, with very richly colored plates. These volumes feature information on the symbolic meaning in the Victorian language of flowers, on poetry inspired by flowers, and on the colors and techniques one should use for botanical illustration. But apart from this content, the set for us today is of interest because of the beautifully colored plates.         1834. Fore-edge painting of Greenwich Hospital London. Poems by Samuel Rogers.

Cadell, Strand & E. Moxon, London 1834 - A rarity, the fore-edge painting reflects verses within the book on Greenwich Hospital of London (permanent home for retired sailors of the Royal Navy). Often fore-edge paintings are general in nature and do not reflect the text. In addition, J.M.W. Turner illustrated the same verses within (engraved after his sketch). This is a beautiful book, with many other engravings after Turner and several other artists. The fore-edge painting is beautiful, painted from a rare vantage point on the Hospital. Several people are recreating along the facing banks of the Thames and on the river you see a hospital ship flying a white flag with red cross (medic flag). Physical Attributes - Measures 20 x 13 x 3 cm. Leather with gilt and blind tooling. All edges gilt (AEG). Fore-edge painting. Pages (1), viii, 296, (1). Condition - See pictures. Respined, but done well, hard to notice. Shelf wear with some rubbing at edges. A few cracks on re-used spine. Inside, the hinges have been repaired and the repair is visible (Japanese paper). No writing in the book. No tissue guards. Very occasional spots. Some bookseller notes on blank unpaginated front endpaper and recto of rear free endpaper. 650 grams [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A manual of the ornithology of the United States and Canada. The land birds. (together with) A manual of the ornithology of the Unites States and Canada. The water birds

Cambridge: Hilliard and Brown; Hilliard, Gray and Co., 1834. FIRST EDITIONS. With 114 beautiful woodcut text illustrations. Original publisher's cloth with paper spine labels, binding of second work unglued at front and spine; some light browning (heavier to preliminaries and endleaves) and scattered foxing. From the library of Dr. Robert Peter, with his book labels and ownership inscription to both volumes. First edition of "one of the earliest landmarks in the history of American ornithology." Written by one of the leading naturalists of the time, this work covers hundreds of land and water birds found on the North American continent, providing detailed descriptions of physical aspects, as well as of nesting and feeding habits. Based partially upon Nuttall's own observations and partly on the writings of Audubon, Wilson and others, Nuttall wrote the manual after having traveled extensively through North America. Nuttall (1786-1859), a distinguished botanist and zoologist, later became curator of the botanical gardens at Harvard University. While traveling the route taken by Lewis and Clark, accompanied by the English Botanist John Bradbury, he discovered several previously unknown plants, afterwards writing his North American Sylva, the first book to include all of the trees of North America. Several bird species have been named after Nuttall, including the Piccoides nuttalii, by his friend William Gambel, and the Pica nuttalli and Phalaenoptilus nuttalli by James Audubon. Robert Peter (b.1805) was born in England and settled in Pennsylvania in 1821. Initially he devoted his attention to botany, founding a botanical society, and becoming associated in the organization of the Philosophical society and the Philological institute of Pittsburgh. He was first a professor of chemistry at Transylvania University, then entered the medical department, graduating in 1834 and becoming professor of chemistry and pharmacy there. During the greater part of the civil war he was employed as acting assistant surgeon in charge of the United States general hospitals in Lexington. In 1865 he was appointed professor of chemistry and experimental natural philosophy at Kentucky University, which in 1866 acquired the Agricultural and mechanical college of Kentucky, in which he remained until 1887, when he was made emeritus.

Atlas of the Counties of England from Actual Surveys Made from the years 1817-33

London: Greenwood & Co.(1834). First and only edition. Folio (640 x 395 mm.), contemporary publisher's half morocco, cloth boards, gilt title to upper boards. With blind and gilt compartments to spine and gilt embossed title. Engraved title-page containing an early wash coloured map of England and Wales, 46 double-page early wash coloured engraved maps by J. and J. Neale, J. and C. Walker and others. Those of Lancashire and Lincolnshire shaved upper and lower margins as is often the case due to their size. Some light offsetting otherwise AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE.; Following the extensive work carried out by Christopher and John Greenwood on the series of large scale county surveys a reduced sized atlas was planned. It was advertised in 1828 to appear in four parts at three guineas per part and began as early as 1829, the date recorded on 11 of the plates. There were to be 46 plates, all at the scale of one-third of an inch to a mile. They ran into financial difficulties towards the end and had to take in partners to finish in 1834. 'For detail, general accuracy and balance allied to high quality engraving and colouring these sheets are probably the finest ever single sheet maps of the counties' (Carroll). The maps are reductions of Greenwood's large scale maps of the counties as stated with the exception of those of Bucks, Cambridge, Hereford, Hertford, Norfolk and Oxford which they did not survey. Studies of individual counties show many were improved with new detail on a regular basis. Closer examination shows that this example of the atlas is an early one. Provenance: With bookplate of Roy Harvey Johnstone pasted inside front cover, dispersed at Sotheby's, London, 20 September 2001 lot 23. Carroll 102; Chubb 458a; Tooley's 'Dictionary'.

Some rubbing and dustmarking to labels; volumes one to three unobtrusively rebacked with matching cloth, and the end-papers sympathetically replaced; back joint similarly repaired in volumes four and six; back end-papers insignificantly cracked in volumes six and seven; in general effect a very nice copy, the text fine throughout. Evidently inspired by Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy', and including many eccentricities of organisation and typography, 'The Doctor' is a fantastic, rambling, miscellany, containing a collection of articles on a great variety of subjects, differing from a commonplace book in that they are connected together, somewhat loosely, by the story that runs through them of an imaginary Dr. Daniel Dove of Doncaster and his horse Nobs. "Its humor is occasionally Rabelaisian." - OCEL, p. 228. Among other things of interest, it includes the first appearance in print (on pp.318 - 326 of volume four) of 'The Story of the Three Bears' - but with a 'Little Old Woman' featured instead of Goldilocks. The volumes are also known with a publisher's catalogue dated May, 1834 in volume one, June 1838 in volume five, October 1846 in volume six, and April 1847 in volume seven. According to the 'English Catalogue of Books', the first volume was published in January. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, [and] Published for Henry Colburn, by R. Bentley (and 2 others, Edinburgh and Dublin), 1830 & 1834 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original drab brown fine diaper-grain cloth, spines gilt lettered and blind ruled, blind ornamental panelling on sides, yellow coated endpapers. A touch of foxing in places. Siam: 12 plates (7 folding, 5 double-page), large folding map of "Siam and Cochin China", plan of Bangkok, folding map and plan of Singapore, 4 wood-engraved plates, 7 wood-engraved vignettes, folding letterpress table of vocabularies. Ava: 5 plates (4 folding, one double-page), large folding map of "Burman Dominions and adjacent Countries", folding plan of Ava, one wood-engraved plate, 5 wood-engraved vignettes. First octavo editions, second overall, following the firsts of 1828 and 1829. These pioneering and handsomely-illustrated works on Siam (Thailand), Cochin China (Vietnam) and Ava (Burma), are based on the first-hand experience of the Scottish orientalist and colonial administrator John Crawfurd (1783-1868). "On resuming service in India in 1821 [after accompanying Lord Minto's expedition to Java] Crawfurd was appointed to head a mission to Siam and Vietnam, with the primary objective of opening up commerce. He made little headway with the suspicious local authorities and achieved no political and little commercial advantage, despite instructions to seek trade on liberal terms without demanding the exclusive privileges customary in the past. But the official report, which he submitted on his return to Calcutta in December 1822, provided invaluable information. When Sir Stamford Raffles retired from the residency of Singapore in June 1823, he appointed Crawfurd as his successor. Crawfurd was impatient and quick-tempered, but Singapore prospered under his stewardship. An ardent free trader, he pruned administrative expenses, abolished port fees, and confined taxes to pleasures, vices, and extravagance, such as opium, alcohol, and gambling. His major achievement was to propose and negotiate a treaty of friendship and alliance, signed with the local chiefs on 2 August 1824, ceding the whole island to the East India Company. In March 1826 Crawfurd was posted to be civil commissioner in Rangoon at the end of the First Anglo-Burmese War and was appointed by the governor-general to head a mission to the Burmese court at Ava, 500 miles up the Irrawaddy River. He was warned to adopt a conciliatory attitude and negotiate a commercial treaty on the basis of equality. He left Rangoon in September 1826, and on his journey along the Irrawaddy he made notes on geology and collected seven large chests of wood, bone, and rock specimens. He was received fairly courteously by the Burmese king but encountered many frustrations in Ava. The commercial treaty concluded on 23 November 1826 offered little, but Crawfurd presented a comprehensive report on Burma on his return to Calcutta in February 1827. The following year Crawfurd retired permanently to England, where he published the accounts of his various missions: Journal of an Embassy from the Governor General of India to the Courts of Siam and Cochin China (1828) and Journal of an Embassy from the Governor General of India to the Court of Ava (1829). These were well received, and both volumes were reprinted in more popular format a few years later" (ODNB). Sets of both works paired together and in such exceptional original condition - the cloth bindings bright and sharp cornered - are most uncommon. Howgego II C54 & C55.

An Original Pencil and Wash Sketch.

[1834] Unsigned orig. pencil & wash sketch on paper, laid down on later paper with loose card mount. 11.5 x 15.5cm.The sketch is accompanied by a manuscript note laid down on a piece of card: 'Drawn by W.M. Thackeray as we were talking together in my lodgings, Southampton Street, Holborn, in the Winter or Spring of 1834. [Signed] 'Edward FitzGerald'. The sketch is of a well-to-do man and woman in 18thC dress standing in the foreground with a rural scene behind them. Thackeray met and befriended Edward FitzGerald, the poet best known for his translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, during his unsuccessful time studying at Cambridge. In a letter to FitzGerald on October 8, 1834 (one of only three letters recorded for 1834 in The Letters and Private Correspondence ...) , Thackeray writes: 'What I like to think of better than your generosity or the cause of it, is the noble & brotherly love, wh. I believe unites us together; my dear friend & brother, may God grant that no time or circumstance ever should diminish this love between us ...' In 1834, having rejected a career at the Bar, Thackeray moved to Paris to study art. Evidently he made trips back to England and took time to see FitzGerald with whom he loved to discuss art, and, as his letter of October suggests, to send him sketches: '... to night I start at the life academy; I will make the drawings you wish - I made two failures of the Sheriff, & the Gamekeeper otherwise you would have had them with the others'.

TOM CRINGLE'S LOG. A New Edition, Revised and Corrected. In Three Volumes

Philadelphia: E.L. Carey & A. Hart, 1834. Hardcover. Good. The title character of this novel, which was originally published serially in Blackwood's Magazine, is a midshipman serving aboard the HMS Torch. Scott (1789-1835) spent some sixteen years of his life (1806-22) in the West Indies, in connection with a mercantile house in Kingston, Jamaica. His travels among the neighboring islands and to the Spanish Main informed his vivid portrayals of the Caribbean and life at sea. 12mo. Original paper-covered boards over red cloth spines, with printed paper spine labels. Some general foxing to the contents, with the pencil signature of James A. Nowland of Delaware to the prefatory leaves in all three volumes. A portion of the front flyleaf in the third volume has been excised. Faint stain to the top corner of the front board of the first volume. The corners are showing, with sun fading along the spines. A fantastic Los Angeles association of two of the most important Angelinos at the dawn of the 20th century, this copy is inscribed to "Henry W. O'Melveny with love from Chas. F. Lummis, 1914" on the front flyleaf in the first volume. Each volume is also signed by Lummis on the title page, with his 1897 bookplate to each front pastedown. Lummis was the author and crusading journalist who served as the first City Editor of the Los Angeles Times. He later became City Librarian, and founded the Southwest Museum. Together with Jackson Graves, O'Melveny founded the prestigious law firm O'Melveny & Myers, and played an important role in transforming the arid basin of Los Angeles into a thriving metropolis. O'Melveny also played an important role in Lummis' life, representing him during his contentious 1912 divorce from his wife Eve: "[Lummis also had two of the most prominent lawyers in Los Angeles on his side, Isidore Dockweiler and Henry O'Melveny. They helped him shield the one asset he has that Eve might go after in a divorce proceeding - El Alisal itself and the many valuable artifacts and rare books that filled it to the rafters" (Thompson, Mark: American Character, p.280).

Des Heilands letzte Stunden" - Autograph Musical Score Fragments

      - Two autograph musical score fragments from the German composer, violinist and conductor's oratorio Des Heilands letzte Stunden ("The last hours of the savior," published in English as Calvary). The two score fragments, of 21 and 10 measures, are both from the oratorio's dramatic final chorus of priests and people (no. 32). The first, 4 pp. on a bifolium, is taken from the beginning of the number, with the text "[Welch] drohend Ungewitter, schwarz wie die Nacht, wälzt sich daher? Der Sonne Antlitzt verhüllet sich. Hört ihr's brausen? Hört ihr's winseln wie Todestimmen?" (corresponding English text: "What threat'ning tempest gathers, black as the night! Hither it rolls, and blots the sun from the firmament, Heard ye the whirlwind, how it howls like the moans of the dying.") The second, 2 pp. on recto and verso, unfortunately with a vertical split along a previous folding crease, is taken from the end of the number with the text "[Sein Geist kehrt] nicht zurück! Entflieht, entflieht dem Wetter Gottes! Hinauf zum Tempel, zum [Gnadestuhl]" (corresponding English text: "Away, from God's just vengeance. Away! and seek we the mercy seat!") Scored for choir and piano four hands. Neatly penned in the composer's hand, with autograph notes on both sheets in another hand identifying the piece, corresponding page of the published piano score, and composition date (Kassel, 1834). Overall toning, heavy on some pages; edge wear and tears; overall in very good condition with the exception of the vertical split. 13.5 x 10 inches (34.5 x 25.7 cm).Spohr's sacred oratorio Des Heilands letzte Stunden (1834-5) dates from a turbulent period in the composer's life. The political turmoil of the 1830's led to the closing of the opera in Kassel in 1832-3, interrupting the composer's involvement in composing operas. Departing from opera, Spohr returned to symphonies, chamber music, and oratorio. His first wife, the harpist Dorette Scheidler, died in November 1834, while he was at work on the oratorio, but he completed it the following year."In the field of oratorio, Spohr made a distinctive contribution to the music of his day. [.] In 1834-5, inspired by Bach's St Matthew Passion, of which he gave the first Kassel performance in 1883, Spohr composed his Passion oratorio, Des Heilands letzte Stunden, to a text of Friedrich Rochlitz. When introduced to England in 1836, however, its subject matter provoked considerable religious opposition, and despite its enthusiastic reception as music, especially after Spohr himself directed it at the Norwich Festival in 1839, it did not supplant Die letzten Dinge in general esteem. [.]For much of the 19th century, especially in England, Spohr's oratorios were considered, alongside Mendelssohn's (which may have overshadowed but did not supplant them), as the legitimate and, with the possible exception of Haydn's The Creation, the only worthy successors to Handel's."         A manual of the ornithology of the United States and Canada.

Based partially upon Nuttall's own observations and partly on the writings of Audubon, Wilson and others, Nuttall wrote the manual after having traveled extensively through North America.Nuttall (1786-1859), a distinguished botanist and zoologist, later became curator of the botanical gardens at Harvard University. While traveling the route taken by Lewis and Clark, accompanied by the English Botanist John Bradbury, he discovered several previously unknown plants, afterwards writing his North American Sylva, the first book to include all of the trees of North America. Several bird species have been named after Nuttall, including the Piccoides nuttalii, by his friend William Gambel, and the Pica nuttalli and Phalaenoptilus nuttalli by James Audubon.Robert Peter (b.1805) was born in England and settled in Pennsylvania in 1821.

        Duke of Wellington Signed Envelope

Envelope signed ('Wellington') and addressed in the Duke's hand to a recipient in Earlham, Norwich, postmarked "2 Feb 1834", mounted together with a color reproduction of the portrait of Wellington by Thomas Lawrence and medal ribbons of the same kind as those Wellington was awarded. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 12.5 inches by 17 inches. Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was an Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman who was one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain. His defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 put him in the first rank of Britain's military heroes. Wellesley rose to prominence as a general during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, and was promoted to the rank of field marshal after leading the allied forces to victory against the French Empire at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. Following Napoleon's exile in 1814, he served as the ambassador to France and was granted a dukedom. During the Hundred Days in 1815, he commanded the allied army which, together with a Prussian army under Blucher, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. Wellington's battle record is exemplary; he ultimately participated in some 60 battles during the course of his military career. Wellington is famous for his adaptive defensive style of warfare, resulting in several victories against numerically superior forces while minimizing his own losses. He is regarded as one of the greatest defensive commanders of all time, and many of his tactics and battle plans are still studied in military academies around the world. After the end of his active military career, Wellington returned to politics. He was twice British prime minister as part of the Tory party: from 1828 to 1830, and for a little less than a month in 1834. He oversaw the passage of the Catholic Relief Act 1829, but opposed the Reform Act 1832. He continued as one of the leading figures in the House of Lords until his retirement and remained Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his death.

        De Corneae Transplantatione. Dissertatio Inauguralis.

Bonnae, typis Caroli Georgii, 1834, 4, 3 Bl., 26 pp., 3 handcolorierte lith.
