        Northanger Abbey; [&] Persuasion.

London: Richard Bentley (successor to Henry Colburn); Bell and Bradfute, Edinburgh; Cumming, Dublin; and Galignani, Paris, , 1833. Octavo. Later 19th-century speckled half calf, marbled sides, endpapers and all edges marble, gilt lettering and raised bands to spine. Engraved frontispiece and extra engraved vignette title, on plate paper, inserted between half-title and title. Both signed "Pickering" at left foot and "Greatbatch" at right, tissue guard intact. Spine and fore edges are slightly worn, other than that, an excellent copy. First Bentley edition, second overall, also the first one-volume edition. Bentley bought the copyrights of all Jane Austen's works to include them in his Standard Novels series, apparently aiming at the private buyer, as circulating libraries still had copies of the originals. Bentley later reissued the volumes as a set, but this copy is from the original individual issue, numbered XXVIII in the Standard Novels series. Finely bound by Bumpus.

Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, 1st ed, 3 vols.

1833. Handsome First Edition of the First Important Work on the American Constitution Story, Joseph [1779-1845]. Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States; With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States, Before the Adoption of the Constitution. Boston: Hilliard, Gray and Company, 1833. Three volumes. xxxiv, [ii], 494; [ii], 555; [ii], 776 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, lettering pieces and blind fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Light toning to text, some leaves have finger smudges, creases or foxing , a few leaves have brief early annotations. A handsome set. * First edition. Story's Commentaries was the most substantial and influential work written on the American Constitution before the Civil War, and it remains an important work today. Written while Story was Dane Professor at Harvard Law School and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, it presented a strongly Nationalist interpretation. It is divided into three books. Book I contains a history of the colonies and discussion of their charters. Book II discusses the Continental Congress and analyzes the flaws that crippled the Articles of Confederation. Book III begins with a history of the Constitution and its ratification. This is followed by a brilliant line-by-line exposition of each of its articles and amendments. Comparing it to the Federalist, James Kent said that Story's work was "written in the same free and liberal spirit, with equal exactness and soundness of doctrine, and with great beauty and eloquence of composition. (...) Whoever seeks...a complete history and exposition of this branch of our jurisprudence, will have recourse to [this] work, which is written with great candor, and characterized by extended research, and a careful examination of the vital principles upon which our government reposes.": cited in Marvin, Legal Bibliography 669-670.       Signiert "Steffan" und datiert "47". Mit doppeltem Tuschrand eingefaßt. Von fremder Hand im Unterrand bezeichnet. Auf leichtem Zeichenkarton. 23,3 x 19,5 cm. Papier: 25,6 x 21,4 cm.

Derby; Henry Mozley & Sons, 1833. - SECOND EDITION. 16 mo. 232 pp. Book Condition: Very Good. Sympathetically recased in beige cloth with original boards laid-on; brown cloth with black titles to upper board and advertisements to lower. Boards a little surface scuffed with wear at corners. Bitting and Axford attribute this work to Eliza Acton from the statement " By the Author of Modern Cookery" but Cagle ( A Matter of Taste pp 632) argues convincingly that it is more likely to be the publisher Henry Mozley, who produced a work of this name in 1818, while Acton's was published well after publication of this title, in 1845. The subject matter covers a wider remit than modern readers might expect, including pickles, meat and fish pastes and alcoholic drinks as well as syllabubs, jellies, jam, and a wide variety of cakes and sweets. Very scarce in original binding ; both Copac and Worldcat locate only 2 copies of this edition and 1 copy of the 1826 First. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2914.

        Sense and Sensibility

London: Richard Bentley (successor to Henry Colburn); Bell and Bradfute, Edinburgh; Cumming, Dublin; and Galignani, Paris, , 1833. A Novel. Octavo. Original vertical fine-ribbed purple cloth, scroll ornament and Greek key border to boards in blind, spine divided by quadruple blind rule and lettered in gilt with series title, an ornament and title of the work (Gilson's third state binding). Engraved frontispiece and extra engraved vignette title, on plate paper, inserted between half-title and title. Both signed "Pickering" at left foot and "Greatbatch" at right. Armorial bookplate of English sportsman, soldier and politician William Slaney Kenyon-Slaney to pastedown. Tanned spine with bumped ends, dampstains to boards, ink smudge to rear board, top edge dusty, inner hinge cracked after half-title but holding, endpapers, plate paper and tissue guard slightly foxed, clean contents throughout, a very good copy. First Bentley edition, third overall, also the first one-volume edition. Bentley bought the copyrights of all Jane Austen's works to include them in his Standard Novels series, apparently aiming at the private buyer, as circulating libraries still had copies of the originals. Bentley later reissued the volumes as a set, but this copy is from the original individual issue, numbered XXIII in the Standard Novels series.

        Girl's Commonplace Album

Hempstead/Queens, New York. 1833-1840. Octavo. Stiff white paper wrappers. Edgewear, foxing, and marks, with a couple of pages missing else good. Mary Elizabeth Bedell's common place album spanning 1833-1840 while she was living in Hempstead, New York. The album is filled with pasted newspaper poems and a variety of her musings, poems, diary entries, and seven cake recipes.Bedell has collected 37 poems from various newspapers about romance, God, and death. These clippings are pasted over pages that had been previously written on. The covered pages and several others were used to practice handwriting as the sentences are repeated multiple times. A few diary entries are written, mostly about her family and those that have passed, "I asked her if she was going to leave us she said she would stay if the Lord was willing, but it was his will to take her to himself where there is no more pain or sorrow. His will be done." There are also pages devoted to her family's ancestry, listing her siblings and her father's family information. Seven different cake recipes are written, one for bread pudding calling for, "Two pounds of flour 3 quarters of a pound of sugar, half a pound of butter, nine eggs, a little mace and rose water," followed by instructions. The name "Carman Lush," possibly a boy she favored, is written throughout the album breaking up diary entries and her own poetry, "The Flower you gave me is faded/ The vows you breathed where untrue/ The bosom whose peace you have invaded/ Still sighs but it sighs not for you," and, "Though fate, my dear sir, compels us to part/ Yet I never will share with another my heart." Several times her name is written "Mary E. Lush" but by the end of the album she only writes her name as "Mary Elizabeth". Bedell was born December 1st 1816 and died 1841 at the young age of 24.The Town of Hempstead was first settled around 1644 after a treaty between English colonists and the Lenape Indians was established in 1643. A mural in Hempstead Village Hall depicts this transaction. Today, Hempstead has developed into the most populous village in the state of New York, with a population in excess of 50,000 people and over fifty religious institutions. A beautiful blend of scrapbook, journal, and musings from a young lovelorn woman in the 1840s. .

Zwei aquarellierte Selbstporträts (zu Pferde / in ganzer Figur), rückseitig bezeichnet: "Verfertigt von Adam Carl Jung, Dragoner (bzw

Carabinier) in Mannheim, gebürtig aus Durlach, 1833 (bzw. 1835)".
