Sydney.

Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1833. Hand coloured aquatint view, 220 x 315 mm.; in bird's eye maple frame. A splendid view of Sydney Cove, made during the Laplace voyage. It shows Circular Quay brimming with ships, the well developed Rocks area and, in detail, Fort Macquarie, the present site of the Sydney Opera House. This was one of the views made on the voyage of the Favorite under Laplace's command. The aim of this grand voyage was to re-establish French influence over Indo-China and the Pacific, as well as to gather detailed trading information and hydrographic data. After a long and difficult voyage through Asia, they moored in Port Jackson during August and September 1831 for a recreational visit. The relaxed stay, in which "banquets and balls took up our time", gave the voyage's artist, Barthelemy Lauvergne, the opportunity to draw a beautiful series of detailed views of Sydney. Fine.

CARTA TOPOGRAFICA DEL REGNO LOMBARDO-VENETO. COSTRUTTA SOPRA MISURE ASTRONOMICO-TRIGONOMETRICHE ED INCISA A MILANO NELL'ISTITUTO GEOGRAFICO MILITARE DELL'I.R. STATO MAGGIORE GENERALE AUSTRIACO.

Autograph Letter Signed to his sister, Mrs McDonald, Glasgow.

Sydney: 13 April, 1833. Sheet of laid paper, 250 x 395 mm., folded to letter-size; written in a very legible script, stamped "India Letter Eastbourne" and with two other postmarks including a fine stamp from Sydney, 13 April 1833, remnants of wax seal. A fine and interesting letter from one of the founders of the Sydney Herald, to his sister in Glasgow, on his ambitions to set up his own house and adjoining print shop.William McGarvie (1810-1841), journalist and bookseller, was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He worked briefly on the Glasgow Herald before he followed his brother John to New South Wales, arriving in the Comet in 1828. He immediately took charge of a stationery warehouse run by the famous printer Robert Howe in Lower George Street. In 1831 he and two colleagues from the Sydney Gazette imported a printing press and began publication of the Sydney Herald. Although heavily involved in setting up the Herald, McGarvie's health was never strong, and he was soon compelled to return to Scotland. However, after a brief visit home, he returned to Sydney in 1832.This 1833 letter, then, dates from the very moment when McGarvie was once more finding his feet in Sydney. At the time of writing he was again working at the Howe's stationery warehouse - then under the proprietorship of Ann Howe - and also working as a jobbing printer. As the letter attests though, his ambitions were grander: 'I have just purchased a piece of ground next to where I am and intend in a few weeks to commence building a fine house and shop for myself so that I hope by the time you come out I will have a fine house and shop of my own to entertain you in. It will be two stories high and contain four rooms with back kitchen &c. and a large handsome shop with a separate entrance for the house.' If McGarvie's ambitions were realised this is a highly important sketch of his attempt to go alone as a printer: certainly it does predate the small series of now very rare books that were published over his separate imprint, most famously Thomas Shepherd's Lectures on the Horticulture of New South Wales of 1835.McGarvie's interest in printing waned after he a acquired a large land grand at Port Macquarie; he named his estate Mount Pleasant, and effectively retired there in 1835. McGarvie died in 1841. Some damage along the old folds, a small section of evidently blank paper missing.

Paris, H. Fournier jeune, 1833, in 8°, de 2ff.

Zoological Illustrations, or Original Figures and Descriptions of new, rare, or interesting animals, selected chiefly from the classes of Ornithology, Entomology, and Conchology, and arranged on the principles of Cuvier and other modern Zoologists.

London: Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820-1823 & 1830-1833. Six volumes, octavo, 318 handcoloured plates, an excellent set in uniform contemporary green half morocco over marbled boards, all edges gilt. A particularly attractive set of both the first and second series of this beautiful work of natural history; all published, and rare in such fine original condition. The importance of this work to Australian and Pacific natural history cannot be overestimated: several plates feature Australian specimens - particularly birds - figured for the first time, while many of the illustrations are derived from the collections of important figures such as Sir Joseph Banks, Elizabeth Bligh, Allan Cunningham and John Byron. Peculiarly attractive is a plate in the second series, depicting the Jamaican "Two-Toothed Disk Snail", from an original sketch by John Lewin, a friend of the Swainson family.Swainson's friend William Elford Leach, head of zoology at the British Museum, first encouraged him to experiment with lithography so as to make drawings of animals suitable for colouring. Thus began the publication of this, his first major work, in which all of the plates are by the author; Swainson was the first illustrator and naturalist to use lithography in this way, achieving a fresh and admirable style. The work deals with specimens from all around the globe, with many from Java, the East Indies, and the Americas (particularly Brazil, visited by Swainson in 1816). Of great interest are the many plates illustrating specimens from the South Seas. Swainson was particularly good on shells, although he relied on the sometimes poor recording of earlier collectors, and was sometimes not able to be more specific than simply giving their habitat as "South Seas". There are, nonetheless, three illustrations of Australian shells, the "New Holland Mitre", the "Mitra melaniana", and the "Scaphella maculata", the last from the collection of Elizabeth Bligh. Several other South Seas shells are from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks, including the "Mitra vitatta", about which Swainson comments that "this superb shell is figured from a matchless specimen brought home by that illustrious and lamented patron of science, the late Sir J. Banks, from the Pacific Ocean".The work is rich with images of Australian birds, with lovely depictions of the "Azure Kingsfisher", "Red-shouldered Parakeet", "Turcosine Parrakeet", "Blue-fronted Parrakeet", and the "Tabuan, or King Parrakeet" (drawn by Swainson from a live specimen). He includes an image of the "White-collared Honeysucker", with the interesting note that "Lewin's figure is so excellent, that I should not again have represented this bird, had not the plate been prepared previous to the publication of his work". Perhaps the most personal note accompanies his depiction of "Swainson's, or Blue-bellied Lory" (Trichoglossus Swainsoni), where he comments on his "pleasure at seeing our name affixed to this charming bird, and in clearing up its history. As a child we well remember our unwearied delight at seeing its figure in White's Voyage".Several Australian birds are depicted for the first time. This interesting group, which we list here with Swainson's original scientific designations, includes the "Yellow-tufted Honeysucker" (Melliphaga auricomis); "Red-Collared Parakeet" (Psittacus Barabandii), from a skin in the possession of Mr Leadbeater; the "Keel-billed Flycatcher" (Muscipeta carinata), "from a specimen belonging to Mr. Brookes; since which, I have received two others from New Holland"; and the so-called "New Holland variety" of the "White-eyed Warbler" (Sylvia annulosa), described by George Caley. Further, of great significance are the two birds noticed from specimens collected by Allan Cunningham, the famous natural historian and His Majesty's Botanist in New South Wales, who sent the specimens to Swainson: the "Black & White Robin" (Petroica bicolor) and the "Golden-eared Parrakeet" (Leptolophus auricomis). The latter had only recently been pictured in Edward Lear's Parrots, but Swainson criticises the "peculiarly inappropriate" name Lear gave it.Charmingly, three Australian butterflies are also figured here, two for the first time. The first is the "Cressida Butterfly" (Cressida Heliconïdes), from two in his own collection and 'received from Van Diemans Land'. The other two, the Australian Jasia-Butterfly (Jasia Australis) and the Australian Burnet (Heleona fenestrata), are both recorded as being collected on the north-west coast of Australia by Allan Cunningham on the King voyage. Not only is Swainson's important work rarely offered, very few examples in contemporary bindings seem to have survived as complete sets, as here: it is more commonly seen in parts, even as single volumes. This work is not in Ferguson, who did note Swainson's work in cataloguing Elizabeth Bligh's shell collection for auction in 1822 (Ferguson, 879). Sitwell lists the first series as having one hundred and ninety eight plates, but all copies of which we are aware, including the copy in the State Library of South Australia, have one hundred and eighty two plates, as here. Very occasional light foxing and toning.

A Report of the Trial of the Rev. Theodore Clapp, Before the...

1833. Religious Liberty and the Tyranny of the Mississippi Presbytery [Trial]. Clapp, Theodore [1792-1866], Defendant. [Channing, William Ellery (1780-1842)]. A Report of the Trial of the Rev. Theodore Clapp, Before the Mississippi Presbytery, At Their Sessions in May and December, 1832. New Orleans: Printed and Published by Hotchkiss & Co., 1833. xiv, 374 pp. Octavo (9-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Contemporary quarter cloth over plain boards, printed paper title label to spine. Light soiling and a few minor stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, chipping to spine label. Some toning to text, occasional light foxing, brief early annotations in pencil to a few leaves. Ex-library. Location label to foot of spine, bookplate to front pastedown, small embossed stamp to title page. A nice copy of a scarce trial. * Only edition. Clapp paid a heavy price for his gradual rejection of Calvinist views and embrace of Unitarian principles. He spent seven stormy years at the First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans, affiliated with the Mississippi Presbytery, which finally convicted him of heresy in 1832. This is the record of his trial, preceded by a reprint of a sermon concerning the trial, "on the Subject of Religious Liberty," by William Ellery Channing, the foremost Unitarian preacher and theologian of the early nineteenth century. It warns of the evils of religion when it turns into "tyranny," as exemplified by the Mississippi Presbytery. Indeed, says the introduction, "no Presbytery in the United States ever before had the moral turpitude, the hardihood, the utter recklessness of justice, evinced by the Mississippi Presbytery" (xiv). OCLC locates 2 copies in North American law libraries (Harvard, Social Law). Jumonville, Bibliography of New Orleans Imprints 790.

A famous sale with fatal results. John Clerk, Lord Eldin (1757-1832), was one of the leading Scottish lawyers of his time; "he acquired so extensive a practice that, it is said, at one period of his career he had nearly half the business of the court in his hands. As a pleader he was remarkable, both for his acuteness and for his marvellous powers of reasoning, as well as for his fertility of resource. Possessed of a rough, sarcastic humour, he delighted in ridiculing the bench, and was in the habit of saying whatever he liked to the judges without reproof."-ODNB. He was appointed a judge in 1823. Clerk accumulated immense collections of paintings, engravings, drawings, china, bronzes, terra cotta, coins, and books. Upon his death, his collections were sold by auction at his house in March of 1833. On the third day of the auction of his estate, the floor collapsed, due to overcrowding and the poor construction of Clerk's house, killing one person and injuring a number of other bidders and spectators. The first two catalogues are both printed on large paper (the first is limited to 50 copies according to the verso of the half-title and the second has a contemporary note that there were only 12 copies printed on large paper). As far as we can tell, no regular paper copies were issued. Clerk was a bachelor with a penchant for the fine arts and devoted much of his leisure time either to drawing or adding to his considerable collections. His consulting room was said to be "overrun by his collection of art, literature, and animals [with] all manner of trash, dead and living, and all in confusion." He possessed paintings, prints, and drawings by Rembrandt, Holbein, Rubens, Dürer, Breughel, along with many other old masters. Additionally, Clerk had amassed "a most extensive and exceptional" collection of 55 volumes with hundreds of architectural drawings by Robert Adam, which he had inherited from his mother, Susannah, sister of the celebrated Adam brothers, the architects. 1210 lots. His library of 1422 lots contained important books in the fields of law, classics, history, the fine arts, with numerous luxury sets. In the third work (also printed on large paper), Howell (1788-1863), an Edinburgh writer and inventor (see ODNB), vividly recounts how the second floor of the home caved in and fell 16 feet below into Clerk's library. He then provides a list of those in attendance at the time of the accident, their occupations, and the degrees to which they were injured. The folding frontispiece map illustrates the floor plan of the house before and after the incident. Four of the five plates and the frontispiece in the first catalogue are reproductions of items in Clerk's collection, including "The Adoration of the Magi." The other plate is a fine steel engraving depicting a bust of the collector, executed by Robert Bell, a famous Edinburgh engraver. Nice copies. Bookplate of James John Falconer, whom we believe was one of the "sufferers." ? ODNB. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Volbracht, Myko Libri, n° 1959. Pritzel n° 8569.

        Broadside, begins: Himno patriotico.

Typographically embellished patriotic poetry: The hymn is written in quatrains and is printed within a "temple" created out of printers' ornaments, dingbats, and dashes. In the arch above the temple's pillars one reads, below the "Eagle and Serpent" logo, "Al glorioso recuerdo del Grito de Dolores." Integral with this, on what might be considered pp. 3 and 4, was printed another verse paean: M. B. [drop-title] Hidalgo en Dolores e Iturbide en Iguala. [colophon: Mexico: Imprenta de Valdez, a cargo de Jose Maria Gallegos, 1833. Folio (30.5 cm; 12"). [2] pp. The only institutions reporting ownership of this duo (the Spanish National Library, the British Library) catalogue them as separate items, not being in any way connected, but clearly, as this offering proves, they were printed at the same time, on the same press, on one single full folio sheet (i.e., 30.5 x 42 cm; 12" x 16.5"). Two examples of celebratory patriotic poetry and clearly very scarce. But one wonders, why were these printed in 1833, which was not a logical year for celebrating either the Grito de Dolores or the Plan of Iguala?

Anthropologie in pragmatischer Hinsicht.

1841 Rare and Scarce Noah Webster Bible

An extremely valuable and rare piece of American and Biblical history. By 1833 when this bible was published, its editor, Noah Webster had written a number of books that were widely used in schools of his day, including spelling books, grammars, and histories. His long list of important books culminated with his famous dictionary, 'An American Dictionary of the English Language'. One of his biographers called him "America's Schoolmaster," and, as such, he naturally turned his attention to one of the few books which were more influential than his own - The Bible. Webster began work on his project in 1831, and publication of the first edition occurred in 1833. Webster's Preface to his revision of the Bible is a significant document in the history of American usage of the English language, as one might expect. In this 15 page introduction, Webster explains "the principal alterations in the language made in this edition." Webster was long a critic of the translation of certain passages in the Bible, and had written about them as early as 1784 in his first Grammar. Webster "untangled some of the clumsy phrases and updated the vocabulary so the early nineteenth century readers, both young and old, could more easily understand the Bible. The changes he made were minimal but crucial. Master grammarian that he was, Webster was sensitive to the beauty and integrity of the KJV and did not tamper with these qualities. Rather, he replaced obsolete terms with those in good use (supposed instead of trow). He also improved the grammar (standardized the use of shall-will, should-would), and corrected obvious errors in the translation. A strong evangelical Christian Webster's high view of Scripture prompted his masterful improvement of the English text. The 2nd edition appeared in 16mo in 1841 and the NT was issued separately in 1839 and 1841.

[VIEWS OF RUSSIAN ARCTIC] Poyezdka k Ledovitomu Moryu [i.e. A Voyage to the Icy Sea]

Moscow: Typ. of Lazarevs' Institute of Foreign Languages, 1833. Xv,iii, 259 pp. 21x13,5 cm. With additional copper engraved title page (decorated with two vignettes), four hand coloured folding lithographed plates (including a frontispiece; two signed and dated by the artist), and a folding copper engraved plate of snow flakes. Period style full leather with gilt tooled ornamental borders on boards and the spine (spine with gilt lettering). Lithographed title page with a minor chip of lower outer corner restored, title page with expert repair of central blank gutter margin, on verso imprint page with a few letters affected, but overall a very good handsome copy. First edition. Very rare Russian imprint with only four paper copies found in Worldcat. The book has never been translated into other languages, the only reprint edition was published in Tyumen in 2004. Interesting early account of the Siberian Arctic with a description of travels down the Ob River to the Gulf of Ob in the Kara Sea. The author Frants Belyavsky - a Russian doctor of Polish origin - travelled down the Irtysh and Ob Rivers from Tobolsk to Beryozov (nowadays Beryozovo) and Obdorsk (Salekhard) to survey the epidemic of syphilis among the natives and Russian settlers, and try to help its victims. The first cases of syphilis among the Samoyeds (Nenets people) and Ostyaks (Khanty people) in Beryozov were recorded in 1816-1817 (Belyavsky, p. 133-141). Starting in 1822 an annual trip by a doctor of the Medical Office of the Tobolsk Governorate had been organized, the doctor would report on the spread of the disease and provide necessary medication to the infected people. The treatment was quite effective and if in the early years «there was not almost anyone among the Ostyaks who would not be infected», in early 1828 out of over 21,000 people there were not more than 611 sick ones (Belyavsky, p. 139). Belyavsky took on the annual tour as a doctor in the service of the Tobolsk Medical Office in the early months of 1828. In his book he describes the voyage down the Irtysh and Ob Rivers from Tobolsk to Beryozov, giving interesting notes on the main villages along the way - Bronnikovo, Uvat, Yurovskoye, Demyanskoye, Denshchikovskoye, Samarovo, and others; separate chapters are dedicated to Beryozov - an important old post on the northern Russian fur trade route - and its historical sites; native settlements on the way to the Obdorsk fort, and the fort itself. Most of the book is dedicated to a thorough description of Ostyaks (Khanty) and Samoyeds (Nenets) - their origin, settlements, dwellings; appearance, physical and mental skills; language, manners and customs, clothes, food, occupations, way of entertainment, riches, state taxes, chiefs, system of justice, religion and shamans, and sicknesses (with a separate chapter on the syphilis epidemic). The book is supplemented with lists of mammals, birds, and plants native to northwestern Siberia «from Obdorsk to the coast of the Icy Ocean»; a copy of a letter written by Alexander von Humboldt to the head of Tobolsk Medical Office whom he got to know during his stay in the city in 1829; a Russian-Ostyak dictionary; and explanation of over twenty local terms. The book is illustrated with four attractive hand coloured lithographed plates showing «Ostyak prince Taishin» with a small view of the Obdorsk fort underneath (frontispiece); «Ostyaks during hunting», «Samoyeds. Shaman. Chief Paygol» (both signed and dated 1832); and a view of a Nenets settlement showing a yurt, an idol in a tree, hunters, reindeers, a dog sled, a person playing a musical instrument, and others. Two lithographs are signed «Zheren. 1832» - by a member of the Zheren family - Russian painters and graphic artists, most likely by Ivan Ivanovich Zheren (18th century - after 1850), a watercolour artist and lithographer. There is also an engraved view of different forms of snow crystals from the shores of the «Icy Sea». Overall a very interesting rare and beautiful book on the Russian Arctic. Belyavsky graduated from St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy in 1824 and was sent to the Tobolsk Medical Office where he served for three and a half years. Later he worked in the Catherine Hospital in Moscow, then opened his own clinic where he used galvanoplasty as treatment, and in early 1830 travelled to the Solovetsky monastery.

        ILLUSTRATIONS OF JAPAN 1822

Published in London in 1822, this is the First English language edition of this classic early account of Japan and the Japanese people. The book recounts the observations of Isaac Titsingh during his stay in Dejima from 1779 to 1784 in his position as Dutch East India Company (VOC) senior official, and is regarded as one of the primary source works on Japan of the period, this example has been rebound in a later quarter cloth binding with marbled paper covered boards, internally beautifully illustrated with fine hand coloured plates, all the plates are present as called for on the list of plates page, the covers are in very good general condition with some minor corner bumping, internally the book bears the bookplate of its former owner, a Cliff Parfitt who was Director of "The English Centre" in Shimonoseki, Japan, title page is noticeable foxed with some moisture staining to inner edges of opening pages, some similar but milder staining to some page edges with some occasional light foxing else the greater part of the contents are in good general clean condition, the frontispiece plate has a split along the impressed plate edge, the large folding funeral plate has some minor worming, a few small holes and mild loss, some creasing due to incorrect folding, the plate has split along the centre fold line and has been repaired with archival tape which is visible on the upper side of the plate, the book remains a generally good example of this important and sought after work on Japan, 11.5 inches tall.

The geology of the south-east of England. [First edition].

Longman, et al. 1833 - London, octavo, xix, [1], 415, [1] p., title-page vignette, many text illustrations, frontispiece and 5 lithographed plates of fossils, plus hand-colored map with sections. This copy includes the half-title page. ***CONTENT: Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) was an English physician who developed a passionate interest in geology and paleontology. His 1822 discovery of the teeth of Iguanodon initiated the scientific study of dinosaurs. In this, his third major work, the author describes the rock strata and fossils of southeastern England, particularly in Sussex and Kent. Herein Mantell announced the discovery of and described Hylaeosaurus, the third dinosaur genus to be recorded, and the first known representative of the Ankylosauria. This volume also reveals Mantell's increasing willingness to abandon the catastrophic views of Cuvier in favor of the incremental uniformitarianism proposed by Hutton and Lyell. One thousand copies of this treatise were printed. ***CONDITION: A VG, tall copy in recent dark brown 3/4 calf and marbled boards, with a gilt-decorated backstrip with five raised bands and maroon and green calf title labels. The covers are very well preserved, with only a hint of rubbing; spine lettering bold and bright. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. New endpapers. Scattered spotting to plates, as typical; text pages pristine: fresh, clean and bright. Old repairs to folds on the verso of the map, but it is complete and has nice coloration. No evidence of previous ownership. A very handsome copy of this important work. BMNH 1235. Ward and Carozzi 1483. Dean 97. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
