        Hayne Hudjihini Eagle of Delight

Key & Biddle, Philadelphia 1833 - Hand-coloured lithograph. In excellent condition. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. This very nice example of Hayne Hudjihini's portrait gives a hint of the beauty and charm that captivated President Monroe, Thomas McKenney and members of the Cabinet. She was one of Shaumonekusse's five wives, and was thought to be the most beautiful of all the Native American wives who visited Washington. She was eighteen or nineteen when King painted her portrait. Sadly, she died of the measles soon after returning home. McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portraits are largely based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Keokuk, and Black Hawk. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the Native Americans for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Office of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices. His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land. In 1827, he journeyed west again for a treaty with the Chippewa, Menominee , and Winnebago in the present state of Michigan. His journeys provided an opportunity to become acquainted with Native American tribes. When President Jackson dismissed him from his government post in 1830, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project. Within a few years, he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer who had written extensively about the west. McKenney and Hall saw their work as a way of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture. (Gilreath). Cf. Howes M129; cf. Bennett 79; cf. Field 992; cf.         Battle of Eylau

Paris 1833 - Baron Antoine-Jean Gros was a french painter. He in 1793 left France for Italy, in Genoa he made the acquaintance of Joséphine de Beauharnais, and followed her to Milan, where he was well received by her husband, Napoleon Bonaparte. On November 15, 1796, Gros was present with the army near Arcola when Bonaparte planted the French tricolor on the bridge. Gros seized on this incident, and showed by his treatment of it that he had found his vocation. Bonaparte at once gave him the post of "inspecteur aux revues", which enabled him to follow the army, and in 1797 nominated him on the commission charged to select the spoils which should enrich the Louvre.Gros was decorated and named baron of the empire by Napoleon, after the Salon of 1808, at which he had exhibited the "Battle of Eylau"Febuary 8th, 1807, between 53,000 French with 200 guns under Napoleon, and 72,000 Prussian and Russians, with 400 guns under Marshal Bennigsen. Napoleon attacked at daybreak, all along the line, but could at first make no impression on the Russian infantry, Marshal Augereau's 7th Corps being slaughtered during a snowstorm. Later in the day Marshal Davout all by succeeded turning the Russian left, but the oppertune arrival of a Prussian corps under General von Lestocq enabled the Russians to repulse him, and after a bloddy engagement, which lasted till ten p.m., both armies retainted their original positions. On the following day the Russiand retired unmolested. The French lost about 10,000; the Russians and Prussians about 25,000 killed and wounded.         EXPERIMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE GASTRIC JUICE, AND THE PHYSIOLOGY OF DIGESTION

Plattsburgh, NY: Printed by F. P. Allen. In original printer's boards with new endpapers and spine cloth. 1833. 1st edition. hb. 8vo, pp. 280. All three wood engravings present and in good condition. Small rubber (name) stamp on title page - no other markings. . Beaumont (1785-1853), a U.S. Army surgeon stationed at isolated Fort Mackinac in northern Michigan in 1822, attended upon a French-Canadian voyageur, Alexis St. Martin, who had been severly wounded by gunshot to the stomach. A permanent gastric fistula formed in the wound, through which Beaumont was able to view the stomach's contents during the process of digestion. During the next eight years, although St. Martin was often away hunting and trapping, Beaumont periodically met up with his patient to continue his observations. At one point, he extracted a specimen of St. Martin's gastric juices and sent the sample for analysis, where free hydrochloric acid was found. Beaumont's book is a remarkable example of brilliant clinical investigation performed under almost primitive conditions. (Beaumont, by the way, eventually lost touch with St. Martin, who was said to have lived for another 45 years and fathered 20 children). Approximately the top half of the original title page of this copy was missing and has now been expertly restored with a facsimile repair. Similarly, there was spotty loss to the paper of pages 23/24, which has now been repaired with japon paper (no loss of text). The contents are foxed throughout, but quite readable. The Errata page (p. 289) is present at the end of the book. Beaumont commissioned a printing of about 1,000 copies of this book, from a local Plattsburgh, NY, printer (where Beaumont was spending a leave), and the quality of the printer's work was not very high. Notable Medical Books, p. 185; G-M 989; Heirs of Hippocrates 834. .

        Outre-Mer No. I; with Outre-Mer No. II

Hilliard, Gray & Co./Lilly, Wait and Company, Boston - 1833-34. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS of Longfellow's first two books of original work, [preceded only by a few grammars and translations]. Outre-Mer was modeled after Washington Irving's Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon in terms both of its content and its publication in numbered parts. More parts were planned, and one or two were actually prepared, but only these two were published as part of the original series. No. I appeared in July of 1833. Longfellow wrote to friends that No. II would come out that fall, but there were apparently glitches as it didn't appear until the following summer, and with the imprint of a different publisher. Only five hundred copies of No. I were printed. The size of the print run of No. II is unknown, but both parts are notably rare. The first part was originally bound in fragile, marbled paper wrappers, the second part in wrappers or cloth-backed, paper-covered boards. The two parts here have been rebound together in modern three-quarter calf over marbled boards. Apart from some scattered foxing and the odd age-darkened page, the book, and both component parts, are in near fine condition. BAL 12053 and 12056.

J.B. Sense and Sensibility. A Novel

London: Richard Bentley,, 1833. Octavo (164 × 105 mm). Contemporary black half calf, marbled sides. Frontispiece and vignette title. Lacking the series title as often. Binding rubbed, hinges cracked, endpapers darkened. A very good copy. First Bentley edition, the third edition overall, also the first one-volume edition. Bentley bought the copyrights of all Jane Austen's works to include them in his Standard Novels series, apparently aiming at the private buyer, as circulating libraries still had copies of the originals. Bentley later reissued the volumes as a set, but this copy is from the original individual issue, numbered XXIII in the Standard Novels series.

MEMOIRS AND LETTERS OF CAPT. SIR WILLIAM HOSTE

Richard Bentley, London 1833 - Complete in two volumes; frontispiece plate to vol. I.; half-titles and title-pages to both volumes; the text is divided into different books and for each book there is a separate title page; pp. vol. I: [16 -publisher's adverts], [8], 351; vol. II: [2- publisher's adverts], [6], 332, [4 - publisher's adverts]. Later binding of cloth-backed boards, (though the boards are probably the publisher's original boards - as the text block has neither been resown or trimmed, but with a later paper covering) Bindings utilitarian and quite worn. The contents are very good, with large margins and the full complement of adverts, good and clean, though some pages are loose and the text blocks have detached from the casings. The pages are generally very clean and the portrait frontispiece is bright. A scarce work. (Ideally this set should be rebound in polished half-calf bindings. We would be very pleased to arrange this on your behalf should you wish - we use some of the best restoration binders and estimate that this work would cost around £300. - please contact us for further details) Size: 8vo (15 x 23cm) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Tomo primo-terzo.

Venezia: impressa dal Calcografo Dom.co Ponga, 1833 - In-folio oblungo (14) (6) c. (di tav.) al frontespizio interno della Basilica. Testo in italiano e francese. Mezza pergamena con piatti in carta marmorizzata. Qualche fioritura. Incominciò nell'ombreggiare a chiaroscuro all'acquarella e ne riscosse approvazione e vantaggio. Marco in sei tavole in fol. A Catalogue of the Library Collected by Miss Richardson Currer at Eshton Hall, Yorkshire

Printed for Private Circulation Only [by J. Moyes]. 1833. Large 8vo, xii,501pp., one of 100 copies, steel-engraved frontispiece showing Eshton Hall and 3 steel-engraved plates of the library and its surroundings, cont. half morocco by J. Mackenzie (bookbinder to the King), upper hinge broken but still holding, spine gilt, marbled paper sides, corners a little bumped, uncut. Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) was England's earliest female bibliophile and was described by Dibdin as the "head of all female book collectors in Europe.". Currer inherited the library of her great grandfather, Richard Richardson (1663-1741), botanist and antiquary, and with the additions made to this Currer built up a sizeable collection of 15,000 volumes. The catalogue is arranged in a number of classes, including religion, arts, natural science, topography, literature and history. Most of the books in her library were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1862, realising £6,000. Provenance: With the bookplate of David Bickerseth Magee (1905-1977). Born in Yorkshire, emigrated to America with the intention of taking up farming in California. However, the life of a farmer was not to be, and soon he found himself employed as an assistant to John Howell, noted San Francisco book dealer. In 1923, Magee opened his own book shop in San Francisco, and thus became one of the first in a long line of distinguished book dealers who were trained in the Howell establishment before venturing out on their own.

A Map of Worcester Shire Town of the County of Worcester

Published by C. Harris, [Worcester] 1833 - The scarcest and most decorative map of Worcester published in the 19th century. "This 1833 map of the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, was printed by Pendleton's lithography. It is distinctive for its depiction of generalized relief and vegetation on the map and of churches and public buildings in the margins" (Ristow). The detail on the map is quite impressive, with hundreds of individual residences named and the locations of businesses identified. The hand coloured boundaries divide the county into twelve school districts. The printing of the map is exceptional, with the hachuring and views exquisitely rendered on stone by Pendleton's Lithography. Stebbins worked as a lawyer in South Brookfield, Massachusetts but was also a trained surveyor. Following work on this map, he was employed as a Civil Engineer by the Massachusetts Western Railroad. The map is rare, with no copies listed in the auction records. We can locate only the Harvard and University of Massachusetts copies. Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers , p. 289. Not in Rumsey or Phillips, A List of Maps of America. Lithographed folding map, printed on two sheets joined, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset map of the "Village of Worcester." Ten vignette views of buildings, including churches, schools, the "Antiquarian Hall" (i.e. American Antiquarian Society), town hall, the "Lunatic Hospital" and "House of Corrections."

Tipografia Bizzoni, Pavia 1833 - 2 volumi rilegati in uno in 8°(23,5 x 15); doppio frontespizio litografato. Pagine (2),416; 390,(2).

Paris: [C.L.F. Panckoucke, 1833. A beautiful image from "Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs": one of greatest flower books ever published by the most celebrated flower painter of all time. This tulip was named after Conrad Gessner (1516-65), a polymath who published the first scientific description and depiction of a tulip in 1561. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in his three great works: Les Liliacees (1802-1816), Les Roses (1817-1824) and the work from which this image comes Choix des plus belles fleurs... et ... des plus belles fruits which was published in 36 parts with 144 plates between 1827 and 1833. The present image shows Redouté at his most assured, combining the best of his artistic background with his skill as an observer of nature. He writes in the preface to the Choix : ''It is with the benefit of experience, and encouraged by the most flattering approval of naturalists and painters of France and abroad, that I undertook took this most agreeable of botanical works. By ceaseless observation of nature, in its constancy and its variety of forms and colours, I believe that I have reached that synthesis of botanical accuracy, composition and colouration that is essential to produce the perfect image of the plant kingdom.' Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Good condition apart from mild soiling, mostly marginal.
