J.B. Sense and Sensibility. A Novel

London: Richard Bentley,, 1833. Octavo (164 × 105 mm). Contemporary black half calf, marbled sides. Frontispiece and vignette title. Lacking the series title as often. Binding rubbed, hinges cracked, endpapers darkened. A very good copy. First Bentley edition, the third edition overall, also the first one-volume edition. Bentley bought the copyrights of all Jane Austen's works to include them in his Standard Novels series, apparently aiming at the private buyer, as circulating libraries still had copies of the originals. Bentley later reissued the volumes as a set, but this copy is from the original individual issue, numbered XXIII in the Standard Novels series.

MEMOIRS AND LETTERS OF CAPT. SIR WILLIAM HOSTE

Richard Bentley, London 1833 - Complete in two volumes; frontispiece plate to vol. I.; half-titles and title-pages to both volumes; the text is divided into different books and for each book there is a separate title page; pp. vol. I: [16 -publisher's adverts], [8], 351; vol. II: [2- publisher's adverts], [6], 332, [4 - publisher's adverts]. Later binding of cloth-backed boards, (though the boards are probably the publisher's original boards - as the text block has neither been resown or trimmed, but with a later paper covering) Bindings utilitarian and quite worn. The contents are very good, with large margins and the full complement of adverts, good and clean, though some pages are loose and the text blocks have detached from the casings. The pages are generally very clean and the portrait frontispiece is bright. A scarce work. (Ideally this set should be rebound in polished half-calf bindings. We would be very pleased to arrange this on your behalf should you wish - we use some of the best restoration binders and estimate that this work would cost around £300. - please contact us for further details) Size: 8vo (15 x 23cm) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Tomo primo-terzo.

Venezia: impressa dal Calcografo Dom.co Ponga, 1833 - In-folio oblungo (14) (6) c. (di tav.) al frontespizio interno della Basilica. Testo in italiano e francese. Mezza pergamena con piatti in carta marmorizzata. Qualche fioritura. Incominciò nell'ombreggiare a chiaroscuro all'acquarella e ne riscosse approvazione e vantaggio. Marco in sei tavole in fol. Traverso, giuntavi una compendiosa descrizione di Giuseppe Piazza. Bell'elogio di essa avea fatto l'intelligente signore Alessandro Zanetti nel Giornale delle Belle Arti e di Tecnologia. Ei le lodava siccome semplicissime ne' partiti di luce, nette, vigorose, armoniche nell'insieme, degradate con istudiosa accuratezza, diligenti e non fantastiche nelle linee, non capricciose, pazientemente eseguite."         A Catalogue of the Library Collected by Miss Richardson Currer at Eshton Hall, Yorkshire

Printed for Private Circulation Only [by J. Moyes]. 1833. Large 8vo, xii,501pp., one of 100 copies, steel-engraved frontispiece showing Eshton Hall and 3 steel-engraved plates of the library and its surroundings, cont. half morocco by J. Mackenzie (bookbinder to the King), upper hinge broken but still holding, spine gilt, marbled paper sides, corners a little bumped, uncut. Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) was England's earliest female bibliophile and was described by Dibdin as the "head of all female book collectors in Europe.". Currer inherited the library of her great grandfather, Richard Richardson (1663-1741), botanist and antiquary, and with the additions made to this Currer built up a sizeable collection of 15,000 volumes. The catalogue is arranged in a number of classes, including religion, arts, natural science, topography, literature and history. Most of the books in her library were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1862, realising £6,000. Provenance: With the bookplate of David Bickerseth Magee (1905-1977). Born in Yorkshire, emigrated to America with the intention of taking up farming in California. However, the life of a farmer was not to be, and soon he found himself employed as an assistant to John Howell, noted San Francisco book dealer. In 1923, Magee opened his own book shop in San Francisco, and thus became one of the first in a long line of distinguished book dealers who were trained in the Howell establishment before venturing out on their own.

A Map of Worcester Shire Town of the County of Worcester

Published by C. Harris, [Worcester] 1833 - The scarcest and most decorative map of Worcester published in the 19th century. "This 1833 map of the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, was printed by Pendleton's lithography. It is distinctive for its depiction of generalized relief and vegetation on the map and of churches and public buildings in the margins" (Ristow). The detail on the map is quite impressive, with hundreds of individual residences named and the locations of businesses identified. The hand coloured boundaries divide the county into twelve school districts. The printing of the map is exceptional, with the hachuring and views exquisitely rendered on stone by Pendleton's Lithography. Stebbins worked as a lawyer in South Brookfield, Massachusetts but was also a trained surveyor. Following work on this map, he was employed as a Civil Engineer by the Massachusetts Western Railroad. The map is rare, with no copies listed in the auction records. We can locate only the Harvard and University of Massachusetts copies. Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers , p. 289. Not in Rumsey or Phillips, A List of Maps of America. Lithographed folding map, printed on two sheets joined, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset map of the "Village of Worcester." Ten vignette views of buildings, including churches, schools, the "Antiquarian Hall" (i.e. American Antiquarian Society), town hall, the "Lunatic Hospital" and "House of Corrections."

Tipografia Bizzoni, Pavia 1833 - 2 volumi rilegati in uno in 8°(23,5 x 15); doppio frontespizio litografato. Pagine (2),416; 390,(2).

This tulip was named after Conrad Gessner (1516-65), a polymath who published the first scientific description and depiction of a tulip in 1561. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in his three great works: Les Liliacees (1802-1816), Les Roses (1817-1824) and the work from which this image comes Choix des plus belles fleurs... et ... des plus belles fruits which was published in 36 parts with 144 plates between 1827 and 1833. The present image shows Redouté at his most assured, combining the best of his artistic background with his skill as an observer of nature. He writes in the preface to the Choix : ''It is with the benefit of experience, and encouraged by the most flattering approval of naturalists and painters of France and abroad, that I undertook took this most agreeable of botanical works. By ceaseless observation of nature, in its constancy and its variety of forms and colours, I believe that I have reached that synthesis of botanical accuracy, composition and colouration that is essential to produce the perfect image of the plant kingdom.' Cf. Hunt Redouteana 21; cf. Dunthorne p 235; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p 129; cf. Nissen BBI 1591; cf. Pritzel 7456; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8750. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Good condition apart from mild soiling, mostly marginal.

Dimostrazioni dell' Emissario de Lago Albano

Paris 1833 - This print was published between 1806-1833. John Wilton-Ely 624The watermark that is present is number 93 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1182 and is dated in the mid 1830sFrom the series "Descrizione e Disegno dell'Emissario del Lago Albano"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely

The Young Cricketers' Tutor: Comprising Full Directions For Playing The Elegant And Manly Game Of Cricket . To Which Is Added "the Cricketers Of My Time" .

Effingham Wilson 1833 - This classic cricket volume is basically two books in one; the first is more a less an instructional manual, telling us how the game works and discussing the various techniques. The second section, meanwhile, is far more colourful and interesting because it describes the players of Nyren's childhood in the late 18th century, when Hambledon reigned supreme as the leading club in England. Nowhere else in the game's literature are player's from this era described in such detail and with such obvious affection. John Nyren was born in Hambledon in 1764, the son of the club's great figurehead, Richard Nyren. Nyren jnr's collaboration with Charles Cowden Clarke has been the subject of much speculation. But is is safe to say that Clarke more of less reworked into proper English notes and observations made by Nyren when recalling the early days of the Hambledon club under the stewardship of his father, Richard, who for many years ran the Bat and Ball public house outside the village at Broadhalfpenny Down. "Nyren" has run to at least eighteen editions over the last 150 years, mostly with slight editions or ammendments, not least to the title. First Edition. 12mo. 126pp. Engraved frontispiece, by Robert Seymour, of a view of the Mary-le-Bone Club's Cricket Ground, foxed. Original green cloth with title on printed label to front cover. Foxing throughout, page edges browned. Spine expertly restored, new end-papers. Ex.libris EDR Eagar, bookplate. A good copy of one of the bedrock cricket volumes and perhaps one of the best known of all sports books. Scarce.  [Padwick, 390]

Ixia Tricolor / Ixia Tricolore [Harlequin Flower]

Paris: [C.L.F. Panckoucke, 1833. A beautiful image from "Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs": one of greatest flower books ever published by the most celebrated flower painter of all time. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Victor. Francescani a Palazzuolo?

Paris 1833 - This print was published between 1806-1833. John Wilton-Ely 644The watermark that is present is number 93 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1182 and is dated in the mid 1830sFrom the series "Antichita di Albano e di Castel Gandolfo"Royal or Consular tomb carved into the rock face of Mount Albano" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. In the 20th century his imaginary inte
