cm. 19,5 x 30. Ogni annata è rilegata in mz, pelle marrone e titoli in oro..

With descriptive particulars, serving as a guide to travellers on the railway. London: Ackermann & Co., 1833. Third edition, with the additional three folding plates. Large quarto (13 5/16 x 11 inches; 339 x 279 mm.). [ii], 8 pp. Sixteen hand-colored aquatint plates (13 by S.G. Hughes or H.Pyall after T.T. Bury, three folding by S.G. Hughes [2 after I. Shaw, one unsigned]). Text watermarked 1831-1832; plates watermarked 1832. Folding plates with folds reinforced on verso with linen (as issued), third folding plate with small marginal tear at top (just touching image) invisibly repaired.Bound ca. 1840 by Thomas Cross of Holborn Hill, London{stamp-signed "Cross, Binders to the King" on front paste-down) in three-quarter crimson straight-grain morocco over pink cloth boards, ruled in gilt. Front cover with gilt bordered red morocco label lettered in gilt. Spine with two raised bands, lettered in gilt. Bookplate of Joel Spitz on front paste-down. Housed in a fleece-lined red cloth slipcase.A wonderful copy of the most complete edition of this fine work. Provenance: purchased from Button, 15 June 1946. An eye-witness account of travel on the world's second practical railway line, with plates after Bury "an outstanding architectural designer" (Abbey) and a detailed report of the difficulties overcome during the railways construction.?"A later edition with the plates re-engraved [many of them with significant changes] was issued in 1833… Copies occur with 2 extra folding coloured aquatint plates by I. Shaw, engraved by S.G. Hughes viz. "A Train of First and Second Class Carriages with the Mail" and "Trains of Waggons with Goods, Cattle &c… This [edition] may have a further additional [folding] plate "Bridge on the line of St. Helen's and Runcorn Gap Railway." (Tooley). ?"This book was first published with six plates in 1831. It proved popular, and other editions followed, of which this is the msot complete. This classic record of the beginnings of the railway age was also one of the last significant books illustrated with aquatints. Lithography was already sweeping the field for pictorial records of this kind?" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England).Thomas Bury, 'a pupil of Augustus Pugin, was an outstanding architectural designer, and engaged with Pugin, in designing the details of the Houses of Parliament. He was the artist responsible for the best-known views of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. He Published as hand-colored aquatints in paper covers by Ackermann in February 1831 [titled Six Coloured Views of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, with a plate of the coaches, machines, &c], Bury's work went through many editions covering a period of about three years. There were seven views in the first edition and thirteen in the second. A reissue appeared in 1832 followed by Spanish and French editions, while the prints were reproduced separately in France and Germany. After re-engraving, new editions appeared in England in 1833 and 1834. Ackermann clearly realized the potential of the British and European markets for railway prints as no other work passed through so many editions' (Rees). The present copy includes the first state of one of the two folding plates of carriages and engines: before canopies were added to the lower set of carriages. The view of the interior of the Wapping to Edge Hill tunnel is in a later state (possibly the fifth) dated 1833 and after the removal of the steaming train (the train was a mistake as no train under steam was allowed in the tunnel). The inspiration for the project to build the railway was the success of the Stockton to Darlington rail line and the urgent commercial need for faster links between the docks of Liverpool and the factories of Manchester ("goods have been known to make the transit from New York to Liverpool in less time than from the latter town to Manchester.") The route was proposed in 1824 and, under the direction of George Stephenson and with parliament's blessing, the immense work was completed by 1830: the line being opened to the public on the 15th September of that year. Despite the tragic death of the Liverpool member of parliament Mr. Huskisson (the first fatality attributable to the Railways) and the huge cost of the work (£740,000 by 1830), the railway was an immediate popular and financial success. Speeds in excess of 30 m.p.h. were recorded for the 31 mile journey and as the author predicted in the final paragraph "The success of this experiment... has been... so complete, as to justify the anticipation of the speedy introduction of railways throughout the country..." The plates include three plates of the train and rolling stock employed on the railway, and 13 others of views of the railway in operation.Abbey Life 400 (1834 edition); Tooley, 121; Ray, 45; Gareth Rees Early Railway Prints (1980) p.21 and see plates 5-9 & 13.

25000 Gramm.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Köthen, 28. I. 1833. - 2 S. 8vo. Doppelblatt.

- 4° (19.4 x 13.5 cm.), stitched. Title page within typographical border. A few small stains and light soiling to title page. Some minor soiling to final leaf verso. Internally clean and crisp. Overall in very good, almost fine condition. Letter "G" in later ink in upper outer corner of title page. (1 l.), 48 pp., (1 l.). *** Second or later edition [?] of the 1833 constitution, issued the same year by the same press in the same format as the first edition. We have compared this to another quarto edition which is a very close but different setting of type to the present one. Our reason for assigning the other quarto edition priority over this and a folio edition we have seen is that on the verso of the final leaf of the other quarto editon the word "sesiones" stands alone on the final line as a "widow". In the present edition as well as the folio edition the word "sus" has been moved from the end of the penultimate line to the ultimate one, thus eliminating the widow, as any good typographer would have known to do.Promulgated under the Portales regime, this conservative document gave a very powerful executive all the means necessary to suppress disorder and guarantee stability, but allowed for only a weak legislative branch and a judicial arm appointed by the executive. The Constitution of 1833 remained Chile's governing document until 1925.*** Briseño I, 75. Palau 59731. See Simon Collier, @Ideas and Politics of Chilean Independence 1808-1833 pp. 435-56.         'Vooloo-Moloo au Port Jackson', aquatint of Sydney's Harbour and Garden Cove

Paris:: Finot Imp.,. 1833.. Very good condition. Aquatint engraving depicting early Sydney and its harbour, a lovely farmland scene of Woolloomooloo in the foreground with farmers and cows in a field, Port Jackson buildings at the right, and a wooded Garden Island in the distance. After a drawing by Barthelemy Lauvergne, this is plate number 64 from Laplace's "Voyage autour du monde par les mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de la corvette de sa Majeste La Favorite". Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace's (1793 ?-1875) voyage was motivated by the French desire to re-establish its influence in the Far East. La Favorite sailed from Toulon, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, stopping in India, many southeast Asian cities and China. In Australia, Laplace stopped in Hobart before leaving arriving in Sydney on August 16, 1831. Laplace devotes many pages in 'Voyage' to his highly positive impressions of the city, describing "Farme-Cove" as a delightful landscape, and "Sidney appears in all its splendour ... Sidney-Cove, filled with ships whose masts ... looks like a moving forest. "... you see Fort Macquarie and the Governor's residence with its lawns, its groves and flowerbeds .... In this part of Sidney-Cove .. everything is cheerful" (The French Explorers and Sydney. Colin Dyer. p153). The crew was warmly welcomed during that visit to Sydney, then headed for New Zealand, where their observations caused concern as to the possibility of a French claim. Engaved by Sigismond Himely, and with a blind stamp displaying the stern of the corvette 'La Favorite' at the bottom margin of the print. A very faint small crescent of damp at lower right corner, otherwise very clean and crisp impression. Paper measures 18 x 12"; image 15 1/4 x 11 1/2". OCLC: 872539315 for the Voyage Autour du Monde. OCLC: 220990466. Trove: Libraries Australia ID 8416713 (NLA).

A History and Description of Modern Wines

London: Whittaker, Treacher & Arnot, 1833. The best guide to late 18th and early 19th century wines of the world. Decorated with 15 charming engravings on title page and at the head of every chapter . First edition. Pp. xxxvi, 407. 8vo, a very good copy in a designed binding of full blue morocco with a a vine leaf in blind and gilt on the upper cover and the original label on the spine. bump to the upper cover and ink stain across the title page, otherwise a desirable copy. The first book in English dealing with 'modern" wines everywhere including a detailed table classing wines from France, Spain, Hungary, Germany, Sicily, Naples and South Africa with descriptions of their properties. Interestingly Redding only bothers with French wines when it comes to the second and third class. He begins with a chapter on viniculture, then wirtes in detail, a chapter on each, of the wines of various countries, region by region including a great deal on France, then Spain, Germany & Switzerland, Portugal and Madeira, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Styria and Carynthia, Greece & Russia as well as Persia, the East, Africa and America. Redding, originally an author of histories and a journalist, spent a great deal of time visiting the vineyards of France and Italy. His book is incredibly accessible as he writes in an unpretentious style and manages to convey the joys and tastes of wine with some ease. Much praised by Andre Simon, Gabler agrees and writes that there is "nothing better in the English language". Scarce. Gabler 33940.

Ownership inscription of Edith Ellis, The Elms, Chudleigh. The first edition appeared in 1826, also published by Mozley in Derby. Axford and Bitting attribute this to Eliza Acton because of teh statement that the book is by the author of "the Modern Cookery" but as Acton's book by this title was not published until 1845, this refers to Mozley's publication of 1818. Extremely rare, only 3 copies listed in WorldCat in the BL, Wellcome Library & Harvard. Only one copy of the only other edition, the first, in Indiana University.

THE WHOLE ART OF LEGERDEMAIN, OR HOCUS POCUS LAID OPEN AND EXPLAINED, BY THOSE RENOWED [sic] MASTERS, SENA SAMA, HAMED BEN-ALLA, AND ALL THE CELEBRATED AND MYSTERIOUS PROFESSORS OF THE ART OF NATURAL MAGIC

New York: N. C. Nafis, 1833. n. Hardcover. An Early 19th Century American "Hocus Pocus" in Remarkable Condition. mm (). 71 pp. PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL GRAY-GREEN PRINTED BOARDS, upper cover with titling and an illustration of a gentleman identified as the author, lower cover with two amusing woodcuts, "The Lawyer and his Client" (a bewigged gentleman astride an ass) and "Hocus Poke-us" (two boys fighting). In a brown cloth chemise and a (slightly rubbed) matching calf-backed slipcase. With a folding frontispiece depicting a conjurer and his assistant onstage before an amazed crowd. Toole-Stott 724. Small stains at top and bottom of spine, covers just slightly grubby, endpapers a bit browned, text with light, inoffensive foxing, but, for what it is, AN UNUSUALLY FINE COPY, the fragile binding entirely sound, and the text remarkably fresh and clean. Given the materials it was made from and the hard use it would have been expected to suffer, this is an exceptionally well-preserved copy of a popular handbook of conjuring tricks, an early American edition of a work first compiled in 1722 by the British magician Henry Dean. Dean's work was itself based on Reginald Scot's influential "Discoverie of Witchcraft" (1584), which sought to discredit belief in "supernatural" forces by exposing the tricks by which conjurers deceived their audience. In the publications of Dean and subsequent editors, this exposé of witchcraft evolved into a guide for performing parlor tricks. Our edition is a reprint or reissue of the 1831 version published by R. Schoyer; because the word "renowned" is spelled "renowed" on both title pages, Toole-Stott speculates that Nafis bought sheets from Schoyer, suggesting that our item would have been a reissue. These insubstantial guide books typically experienced considerable uncareful use in the hands of amateur (and often juvenile) magicians; consequently, the few copies that do appear on the market are in deplorable shape.

Sand Rock Hotel, Isle of Wight. Black and white hand drawn in pencil. Princes Victoria stayed there. Miss Mitford Engraving [1836], Bivouac / Napoleon plate, many other postcards. Many pages are 'framed' by hand coloured butterflies

circa 1833. 1833 11½'' x 9¼'' Scrapbook with spine cracked and broken, the leafs are not loose or detached from the book. The story around this plate has been narrated in various French Scientific and Literary classics, eg Oeuvres Completes de Bernardin de St. Pierre, under Etude Premiere Immensite de la Nature - page 3, second half - page 5 - and includes his related ref. to discovery of micro(be)-life by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek and Robert Hooke (both mis-spelled) at top of page 5. Hand coloured plate titled Auricula de la Belgique / The Auricula of Belgium with No. 18 underneath. Beautiful arc of auriculas around the lady's head. Just an afterthought - if published at the same time - early 1830's, the origins might have been somewhat obscured eg. printed 'clandestinely' in France, who co-conspired with the Belgians to regain their 'freedom' - due to the Dutch rule / occupation of Belgium till 1831, as part of the redrawing of Europe after Napoleon. The Dutch wanted to suffocate the Belgian Book / Journal/ Educational printing press by imposing massive stamp duties, so they would have to by from rich, mainly Amsterdam publishers. This was just one of many grievances, which led to the Belgian Revolution against the Dutch. A horrible, shameful 5 years of Dutch history - led by the then King William I and his acolytes. He was proud, and callous as he was dim. Monochrome plate SIGNED and dated A. Jenner, 1831, was done as a personalised engraving by the famous C. Heath (of Charles and William Heath Brothers). Later C. Heath generation became founders of Lloyds of London insurers. And much, much more. Heavy volume. Member of the P.B.F.A.

Fromm 19589-91). - Gut erhalten, wenig gebräunt. So komplett sehr selten. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST ELEVEN SESSION LAWS OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE FLORIDA TERRITORY, 1822 - 1833]

1833 - Eleven volumes, publication details and pagination provided in the listing below. Uniform 20th-century buckram, gilt leather labels. Soiling and some wear to bindings, with minor chipping to some labels. Some preliminaries detached, occasional foxing, toning, or tanning, some small ink library stamps, embossed blind-stamps, and ink ownership inscriptions to titlepages, some dampstaining, an occasional closed or repaired tear, some leaves closely trimmed, a handful of contemporary ink notations, five leaves in photo-facsimile. Overall, a very good set in decent condition. Florida Imprints of Extraordinary Rarity A monumental set of early Florida laws, covering the period between the first and second Seminole wars, and comprising the first eleven sessions of the legislative council for the territory of Florida. The Florida territory was formed after the region was ceded to the United States under the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty, following the successful incursion by General Andrew Jackson's troops in 1818. Jackson was briefly military governor, but after the merging of East and part of West Florida, William Pope Duval became the first official governor of the new Territory in 1822 and the Legislative Council held its first session. The 1823 publication of the first session also includes the Treaty of Cession, Jackson's ordinances, the Act of Congress organizing the Territorial Government, the U.S. Constitution, and Spanish regulations for the allotment of lands. Not surprisingly, there is a wealth of material in these session laws regarding relations with Native Americans and African-Americans. The volumes comprising this set are exceedingly rare, with no examples at auction of any of the early sessions, and the only retail examples being the Eberstadt copy of the fourth session, sold back in 1937 for $65, and one copy of the ninth session currently in stock with us at $1500.
