THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE AMERICAN FORCES, DURING THE WAR WHICH ESTABLISHED THE INDEPENDENCE OF HIS COUNTY, AND FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES... [WITH THE ATLAS]

Philadelphia: C. P. Wayne; J. Crissy, 1832. Full Leather. Very Good binding. The First Edition in five volumes of the first serious biography of Washington and really a comprehensive account of the founding of the nation. Washington's executor selected John Marshall to write the biography, and in that sense it might be considered "an authorized biography". But it is more than that. Marshall was Washington's personal friend -- he knew the man, and he knew the new republic. His work gained authoritative status almost immediately. A complete set with the Atlas Volume a bit later, published by Crissy in Philadelphia in 1832; complete with the ten maps. Volume I with the engraved frontispiece portrait. This set has been repaired -- Volume I has had some gluing to the spine, especially where the textblock had been splitting; volumes IV and V have some patching to the spines. All have the attractive original marbled endpapers. The Atlas volume is in the original paper-covered boards with the green pastedown title label; it has been rebacked with new brown calf and new corners in calf. (Howes M317; Sabin 44788. Shaw & Shoemaker 6710.). Very Good binding.

On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures

Charles Knight, Pall Mall East, London 1832 - At xvi, 320 pp. followed by 2 pp. publisher's advertisements, this is the first edition of Babbage's classic treatise, the first known book of operations research, discussing topics including the regulation of power, control of raw materials, division of labor, time studies, the advantage of size in manufacturing, inventory control, and duration and replacement of machinery. On pp. 166-167 Babbage analyzes the production of this book as an example of the cost of each step in a particular production process. "The work was Babbage's most complete and professional piece of writing," going through four editions in his lifetime. Furthermore, while most copies (even of the expanded, later editions) now available have been rebound, this copy is in the original binding of purple cloth (showing a moire pattern, probably silk), and scarce thus, though faded to brown at the spine and along top of the rear board, where it appears to have been shelved next to a shorter volume. Purple library stamps of the Collegium Maximum Heythrop. to blank FFE and to engraved title page, only. No other library markings or attachments. Previous owner's name in period script to top of second blank. Light foxing to preliminaries. This volume complete with its original endpapers, which have not needed any repair. Small nick at front of spine; bottom board corners peeking through the cloth. The calculating engines of English mathematician Charles Babbage (1791-1871) are among the most celebrated icons in the prehistory of computing. Babbage's Difference Engine No.1 was the first successful automatic calculator and remains one of the finest examples of precision engineering of the time -- though in fact the critical tolerances required by his machines exceeded the level of materials technology then available. Sometimes referred to as the "father of computing," Babbage was already famous for his work on his calculating machine when he secured a grant of £1500 to pursue his inquiries into the economics of manufacturing, this book being the result. In his preface he acknowledges the book is a direct consequence of his research and many hours spent visiting places of manufacture in connection with the development of his calculating machine. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816 and playing a prominent role in the foundation of the Astronomical Society (later the Royal Astronomical Society) in 1820, he advocated the decimalization of currency, foresaw the role of tidal power as an energy source, and predicted the exhaustion of coal reserves. He also played an important role in the establishment of the Association for the Advancement of Science and the Statistical Society (later the Royal Statistical Society). Only fragments of Babbage's prototype Difference Engine have been preserved, and though he spent most of his time and large fortune after 1856 attempting to build his subsequent, multi-task Analytical Engine, he never succeeded in completing any of his several designs. George Scheutz, a Swedish printer, did successfully construct a machine based on Babbage's Difference Engine in 1854. That machine printed mathematical, astronomical and actuarial tables with unprecedented accuracy, and was used by the British and American governments. This small volume was a turning point in economic writing and firmly established Babbage as a leading authority of the industrial movement. History of science, mechanical engineering.         American Ornithology; Or, The Natural History Of The Birds Of The United States; The Illustrative Notes and Life of Wilson By Sir William Jardine

London & Edinburgh: Whittaker, Treacher, & Arnot & Sterling & Kenney, 1832. Hardcover. Contemporary half green calf and marbled boards. Teg. Very good. 3 vols. 408, 495, 540 pages. 22 1/2 x 15 cm. Portrait frontispiece. 97 hand colored engraved plates (some with hand-colored backgrounds). Plates re-engraved by William H. Lizars. General Index of English and Latin Names. Originally published, Philadelphia, 1808-1810. Wilson sailed from Scotland to America in May 1794, two years prior to his thirtieth birthday. With the use of William Bartram's library and under his tutelage, Wilson initiated his systematic study of American bird on which his reputation rests, a work of outstanding merit. He did not live to see or enjoy any financial profit from his endeavor which was completed by George Ord, his companion and admirer. Dr. Elliott Coues said, "Perhaps no other work on ornithology of equal extent is equally free from error; and its truthfulness is illuminated by a spark of the fire divine...."

A miniature leaf-shaped Qur'an, copied by Mohammad Saleh Taom Zadeh, in Arabic.

Turkey, dated 1248 AH (1832/33). - An enchanting miniature Qur'an in an unusual decoupe leaf-shaped style with jagged edges on dark green paper. While the Tuba tree is not actually mentioned in the Qur'an, it is commonly believed to be that which grows in Janna, the Islamic understanding of Paradise, and its leaves stand behind the shape of the delicate 'leaves' in this unusual codex. The use of silver and the presentation of the entire Qur'an in two tiny columns which mimic the veins of a real leaf, point to the quality of this manuscript and the wealth of the patron who commissioned it. - Only two comparable Qurans have appeared on the open market in the last few years: both at Sotheby's, 19 October 1994, lot 57, and 24 April 1996, lot 18.

Die naturliche Brucke in Virginien: Vereinte Staate.[Austria?, ca. 1840s-1850s]. Pen, black ink and watercolour on paper (59 x 44 cm), framed in a passe-partout (75.5 x 58 cm).

Howat, et al., American paradise, pp. 272-274; Kastning, Natural Bridge, p. 20; cf. Sears, Sacred places. Large, high quality watercolour of the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia. This natural arch spanning 27 meters was, along with Niagara Falls, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States in the late-18th and early-19th century. As an old natural wonder in a young country, it played an integral part in the formation of America's national identity and was "certainly a worthwhile side trip for travelers who hoped to experience the sublime quality of the American landscape" (Howat). The sublime aspect is often present when from the 1830s onward artists start depicting the Bridge: as in the present watercolour, where small figures are placed in the foreground to show the massiveness of the 88 meter high geological formation. The view shown in the present watercolour appeared as an engraving in John Howard Hinton's History and topography of the United States (1832) after a drawing made by the American landscape painter William Goodacre (1803-1883). The image was widely pirated and imitated and appeared in numerous other publications, including Meyer's Universum in 1837, with a caption identical to the one on the present watercolour. The anonymous artist probably copied the image from the 1837 publication, but made several changes, simplifying most of the foliage but adding the large fern, duplicating the kneeling hunter and adding an extra deer. Interestingly, the engraving shows a tree peering out from behind the bridge, pencilled in outline, but never painted in.From an Austrian private collection. In very good condition.

        Tinnunculus Cencroides

London: The Birds of Europe 1832 - Sheet Dimensions: 21 x 14.5 in. Frame Dimensions: 32.5 x 26 in. Original hand-colored lithograph. John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains. For the next fifty years, Gould and his wife Elizabeth and artist working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. The Birds of Europe includes amazingly distinctive, and highly realistic images. Gould undertook this work partly in effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. Gould portrayed birds native to Europe in a manner that had only been thought appropriate for the colorful species of distant places. In this way he managed to draw much popular interest back to native European birds, which were suddenly considered equally beautiful to exotic species.

With two plates. Pp. [1]-33, [2], 33-45, [1] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Advocating the Equality of Women 1832: Trial of the followers of Saint-Simon. At the funeral of influential social thinker Claude-Henri de Rouvroy, comte de Saint-Simon (1760-1825), his disciples founded a movement to foster socio-political cooperation and development for the common welfare of humanity. Even before the trial, a schism had split the movement. Olinde Rodrigues, an original disciple of Saint-Simon, founded an organized religious movement in December 1831. Account of the August 1832 trial of Prosper Enfantin (1796-1864) and his fellow Saint-Simonians for illegal assembly and public meetings at which, advocating the equality of women through spoken discourse and printed works, they commited crimes "in violation of public morality and good morals" (outrage à la morale publique et aux bonnes moeurs)."La supériorité que, d'après les lois, l'home exerce en certains cas sur la femme, est, suivant les Saint-Simoniens , un autre abus auquel il faut mettre un terme. De la des principes nouveaux sure le marriage, sur le divorce et des principes nouveaux sure le mariage; ces principes et els ecrits dans lesquels ils sont exposés, sont signalés commes contraires à la morale publique et aux bonnes moeurs."The title leaf is printed as an unsigned first leaf of the second gathering. The two plates include a bust portrait of Prosper Enfantin, designated "Le Père" (Father), and a leaf with portraits of the four accused. Prosper Enfantin and Michel Chevalier served six months in prison. Enfantin and a group of his followers subsequently lived in for a time in Egypt, but their technocratic scheme to construct a dam in the Nile foundered. The Saint-Simonian movement had waned by the time of the Second Empire, but their ideals and revolutionary aims influenced many nineteenth-century thinkers, Marx and Engels among them.Only one copy recorded in North America and four in France.

».         Robin Hood: A collection of all the ancient poems, songs, and ballads, now extant relative to that celebrated English outlaw.

William Pickering; York: J. & G. Todd, 1832. The earliest scholarly effort towards compiling and analyzing the surviving historical Robin Hood ballads, along with a carefully constructed argument regarding the identity of the "real" man behind the myth. This second, enlarged edition was the first published by Pickering, with the printing done by Charles Whittingham, and it showcases => Bewick's original wood-engravings from the 1795 first edition. The advertisement here notes that Ritson, following the original publication, "continued . . . to make additions to his own copy, from which the present edition has been carefully printed" -- and also claims that "from the improved art of wood-cut-printing," the Bewick illustrations are actually clearer and more beautiful here than they were in the first edition. Tunes for "Robin Hood and the Tanner," "Robin Hood and the Bishop of Hereford," "A Freeman's Song," a round that begins "Robin Hood, Robin Hood," and "Robin Hoods Delight" are supplied, along with a glossary of archaic vocabulary. Binding: Signed binding done by => Francis Bedford, stamped as such in turn-ins on front pastedowns and on front free endpapers: 19th-century calf framed in triple gilt fillets with small corner rondels, spines gilt extra with gilt-stamped red leather title-labels and green leather volume labels, board edges with double gilt fillets, turn-ins with gilt roll. All edges gilt. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear of each volume.

Five letters to James George Tatem of High Wycombe, from Thomas Buxton Fowell, Joseph Hume M.P. & Sir George Nugent Grenville. ALS to 'My dear friends', from the Slavery Committee, House of Commons, June 9, 1832. 'I am now engaged in examining witnesses before the above committee ...'

1832-1835 23 lines on one side of a folded folio sheet; old folds. WITH: Two ALsS to James George Tatem from Joseph Hume, Bryanston Square, 11th & 20th February 1835, 43 & 37 lines respectively, the first on three sides of an 8vo sheet & the second on two sides of folded 4to sheet, integral address leaf; wax stamp tear & old folds. WITH: Two ALsS to James George Tatem from 'Nugent' (George Nugent-Grenville, 2nd Baron Nugent), Treasury, Feb. 8, 1832 & Corfu, March 30, 1834. 20 lines & 50 lines respectively on two and three sides of folded 4to sheets, the latter with integral address leaf; old folds. WITH: 69 address leaves, all to James George Tatem (or Upham as he was previously known), cut from letters & laid on to 37 folded folio sheets.Five letters from reforming liberal M.P.s to James George Tatem, a pre-eminent member of Buckinghamshire liberal society. Tatem was the Mayor of High Wycombe between 1835-36. In 1812 and 1814, both Tatem and Fowell Buxton, together with reformers John Thelwall, Francis Place, James Mill, David Ricardo and others, contributed to the Royal Lancastrian Institution for the Education of the Poor. Tatem, an amateur meteorologist, was also a founding member of the Meteorological Society. The extent of Tatem's political activity in his constituency is evident from both the letters & the address leaves. The influence of local men of prominence, Tatem in this example, was clearly vitally important in campaigning for political success at the polls. Of the 69 correspondents 41 are M.P.s and/or noblemen. Members of both the Whig and Tory parties are represented including the Prime Minister Earl Grey, the Duke of Wellington, Thomas Hobhouse, Sir George Dashwood, Henry Hope, and Lords Althorp, Granville Somerset, Lichfield and Grosvenor. There is also an envelope from the radical John Thelwall, one of three men, together with Thomas Hardy and Horne Tooke, who were arrested, tried and cleared of High Treason in 1794.The first letter, from the M.P. and abolitionist Thomas Fowell Buxton, calls on Tatem and 'friends at High Wycombe' to support Colonel Grey in the forthcoming election. 'I am now engaged in examining witnesses before the above committee. I have only time to say therefore that I hope that you & our other friends at High Wycombe, ... will exert themselves to assist Col. Grey in his election. I assure you our cause owes a great deal indeed to his brother Lord Howick & I need not say what is due to Lord Grey ...' Colonel Grey's father was Charles Grey who oversaw, as Prime Minister, the Great Reform Bill, which finally passed the Lords in March 1832, three months prior to this letter. In the elections of November 1832, Colonel Grey was elected ahead of Benjamin D'Israeli by twenty votes to twelve. The two letters from the Scottish radical Joseph Hume, 1777-1855, M.P. for Middlesex (1830-37), express gratitude to Tatem for his political support. 'Allow me to express my grateful acknowledgements for your late noble exertions, as one of the 3096 independent electors who recorded their suffrage in my favour; and thereby, successfully supported the Cause of Reform.' Hume, a Scottish Doctor from Montrose, was, like Tatem and Buxton, a campaigner for the betterment of conditions for the working classes and a supporter of the Lancastrian system of education. He was known as an ardent guardian of the public purse, questioning all public expenditure and fighting against corruption. 'It is the tact of all those, who enjoy undeserved pensions, sinecures, or other allowances in Church or State and of the public purse, to raise whatever cry they can against me when for 25 years I have perseveringly advocated the reduction & abolition of all such improper expenditure ...'His second letter continues: 'let us take a lesson in these matters from our opponents - the Tories are vigilant and active for they have much to lose - pensions, sinecures, and over-paid offices are too good things to be relinquished without a mortal struggle - they therefore, are already organising their forces to secure the return of men of their own party at the next election ...' The third and fourth letters are written by George Nugent-Grenville, 2nd Baron Nugent, 1789-1850. A radical Whig M.P. Nugent was elected Member for Buckingham in 1810 and later served as M.P. for the borough of Aylesbury until its dissolution in 1832. The first letter, which concerns a drawing that Tatem has offered to Nugent as a gift, is written from the Treasury where Nugent served until August 1832 and his appointment as Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. His second letter is written from Corfu where he writes wistfully about being separated from his friends. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK and the EU, this item is subject to VAT.

        Vom Kriege.

Berlin: Ferdinand Dümmler, 1832-3 - 3 volumes octavo (200 × 119 mm). Contemporary brown skiver-back and tips on streaked paper boards, green morocco labels to spines, edges stained green. Externally somewhat rubbed and a little soiled, some judicious restoration to the spines and corners, tan-burn at the corners of the endpapers, pale toning to the text-blocks, but overall very good. First edition. Clausewitz's works were published posthumously, edited by his widow, and these, the first three volumes of ten, contain the first appearance of Vom Kriege (On War), his dialectical analysis of the function of war in human society. "The book is less a manual of strategy and tactics, although it incorporates the lessons learned from the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, than a general enquiry into the interdependence of politics and warfare and the principles governing either or both. published by his widow [it] won immediate recognition as the most profound exposition of the philosophy of war - a place that has never been disputed" (PMM). Carter and Muir's estimation in 1967 of the continuing relevance of Clausewitz's work is confirmed by Daniel Moran in his article on Clausewitz in The Oxford Companion to Military History (2001) where it is described as "the most important general treatment of its subject yet produced". This set with the small contemporary ink-stamps, ownership inscriptions, and press-marks of the Bibliothek der leichten Infanterie Halb-Brigade to the front endpapers, and to the title pages together with a slightly later ink-stamp of the Erstes Königlich Sächsisches Jäger-Bataillon.         THE DRAMATIC WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKSPEARE: WITH GLOSSARIAL NOTES, A SKETCH OF HIS LIFE, AND AN ESTIMATE OF HIS WRITINGS. NEWLY ARRANGED AND EDITED

London: Moon, Boys, & Graves, 1832. Full Leather. Very Good binding. Folio. From the Preface: "The present collection of Shakspeare's Plays differs in arrangement from any that has hitherto been published. The Tragedies, Comedies and Historical Plays are divided; and in each division, the consecutive order of the pieces has reference to the country in which the action is laid, or to the epoch at which it is supposed to have taken place". Certainly a unique approach, coupled with printing of all of the plays as pages octavo in size and arranged consecutively, four on each folio page. Illustrated with 100 engraved plates, including two engraved portraits of Shakespeare. The Moon, Boys & Graves concern obtained the plates from the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery and the dramatic images are "depicted from the powerful pencils of Reynolds, Opie, Northcote, Smirke, Stothard, Westall, Howard, Romney, and others" [Preface]. There are as well numerous text illustrations grouped in 8vo. size. Most of the plates have some degree of foxing, mostly (though not always) limited to the borders. One of the plates illustrating Julius Caesar has a distinct but not strong tide-line. Bound in brown morocco with elaborate gilt borders to the boards, turn-ins with gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, raised bands with gilt decorations. There is a very discreet patch to the bottom of the spine. An attractive ex-libris is on the pastedown. Very Good binding.
