A MEMOIR OF MISS HANNAH ADAMS, WRITTEN BY HERSELF, WITH ADDITIONAL

1832. Good. ADAMS, Hannah [and Mrs. Hannah F. Lee]. A MEMOIR OF MISS HANNAH ADAMS, WRITTEN BY HERSELF, WITH ADDITIONAL NOTICES BY A FRIEND. Boston: Gray and Bowen, 1832. 110 pp. 12mo., green cloth with paper spine label. Fair to good, rear joint starting, spine label scraped with only remnants legible. Light pale spotting to cloth. Interior foxed, hinges starting. Rear flyleaf has small chip and small closed tear. Lovely lithograph frontispiece portrait, slight soil to page edges, not affecting image. Hannah Adams (1775-1831), though she thought herself timid and unworldly, was the first American woman to support herself as an author. Her first book, An Alphabetical Compendium of Various Sects (1784), went through several editions; later editions are titled A View of Religions. She was regarded by her contemporaries as an able and industrious author; yet she herself made only modest claims for her achievement. Her memoir, published posthumously, is the chief source of information about her; and, with characteristic modesty, it was written partly to raise money for her ailing younger sister. (N.A.W.)

The Mushroom and Champignon Illustrated. Compared with, and, Distinguished from the Poisonous Fungi that Resemble Them.

London: J. Sowerby Jun 1832 - Sole edition. 8vo. (8) pp. Original drab wrappers with printed title label to the upper cover. A few small nicks and tears to the extremities, a very good unsophisticated copy. 5 fine handcoloured plates. The engravings feature illustrations of four types of mushroom from the genus Agaricus - Campestris, Georgii, Pratensis and Virosus - all of which also appear in the third and final part of James Sowerby's "Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms" published in 1815. James de Carle Sowerby assisted his father in several works and the appearance and composition of the illustrations of the respective mushroom types in each work are similar, though not identical. Uncommon, with Copac only showing three copies in the UK and Worldcat just a few others overseas.

Sketch of the History of Van Diemen's Land , illustrated by a map of the island and an account of the Van Diemen's Land Company

London: John Richardson, 1832. Octavo, with two engraved plates and a large hand-coloured folding map (closed tear neatly repaired), very good in original boards with green cloth spine and printed label. With a fine Arrowsmith map. First edition. An important account of Tasmania, intended for distribution among shareholders and prospective shareholders of the Van Diemen's Land Company, reprinting several of the company's reports, including the significant (and rare) third report of 1828 detailing the explorations of the company's explorers, Alexander Goldie, Henry Hellyer, and Joseph Fossey. It was Hellyer who 'found a cliff of slate on the Arthur River, and promptly engraved on a large slab the words "Whoever is found stealing slate from this quarry, will be dealt with according to law". Apart from the inherent unlikelihood of anyone making off with large quantities of slate, the claim of ownership is revealing for its total self-assurance in the face of the wilderness…' (People, Print and Paper). The work is wide ranging, including sections on geography, wildlife, trade and emigration. Of interest is the correspondence contained in the appendix between the governor George Arthur and his superiors in London, including Viscount Goderich and Sir George Murray, regarding the escalating tension between settlers and the Tasmanian Aborigines. The appendix also includes the substantial "Extract from the Report of the Aborigines Committee, 19th March 1830." From the library of Australiana collector Tristan Buestt with his bookplate.

        Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Halbfigürliches Porträt.

. Radierung und Kupferstich, 1832, auf aufgewalztem China. Darstellungsgröße. 24,6:20,7 cm. Emigration and Colonization, A Speech, delivered at a general meeting of the National Colonization Society, June, 1830

London: Effingham Wilson, 1832. Slim octavo, 15 pp.; an excellent copy in modern tan half calf over marbled boards. South Australia before settlement. Rare political pamphlet: 'an explanation and advocacy of the three principles for which the National Colonization Society stood, namely, selection of emigrants, concentration of colonists and the sale of waste lands' (Ferguson). The pamphlet was written after the collapse of the Society proper, but seeking to have the principles endure. Hutt prints a lecture he delivered in the form of an address to his colleague Wilmot Horton, and quotes particularly from a colonist in New South Wales (among much of interest, including an aside on the difficult conditions being endured by the Aborigines of New Holland). William Hutt (1801-1882) was a British Liberal closely involved with the colonisation of both South Australia and New Zealand. A serving MP from 1832, Hutt took on any number of colonial positions including helping form and become the chairman of the New Zealand Company.

6 in 3 Bänden.

Potsdam, Riegel, 1832-1833.. 8°. Zusammen etwa 2300 Seiten Halb-Leinenbände um 1920 mit Rückenschild. Fromm 19588. Fromm 19589-91). - Gut erhalten, wenig gebräunt. So komplett sehr selten.

Autograph letter signed to Mr. Chauvin presenting a copy of the official account of his voyage

no place: no date but circa, 1832. Single sheet of laid paper, 207 x 260 mm., folded vertically to form a letter, written in a small and neat hand to first page and addressed - but not stamped - to the last, old folds; excellent. Dumont d'Urville presents his new work to a scientific opinion-maker. Attractive letter in which the great Pacific and Antarctic explorer Dumont d'Urville presents the first parts of his official voyage account to the natural historian F.J. Chauvin of Caen, active in botanical studies in the mid-nineteenth century. Chauvin's herbarium is still held at the Université de Caen, and his name is memorialised in several plant names. In the letter, Dumont d'Urville sends Chauvin the "first two parts" of his voyage account, in the hope that they will of interest. It may be that he was sending the first parts of the historical narrative of the voyage, first published in 1830, but given Chauvin's botanical studies, it is probably fair to assume that he was being sent the two parts of the Botanie volume, edited by Lesson & Richard (I. Essai d'une Flore de la Nouvelle Zelande. II. Sertum Astrolabianum, Paris, 1832-4). Only as a postscript to the letter does Dumont d'Urville remember to offer his regards to Chauvin's wife and little girl. Dumont d'Urville had sailed on the Astrolabe (Duperrey's old ship the Coquille, renamed in honour of La Pérouse) from Toulon in April 1826. He was instructed to explore the principal island groups in the South Pacific, completing the work of the Duperrey voyage, on which the commander himself had been a naturalist. Because of his great interest in natural history, huge amounts of scientific data and specimens were collected, described and illustrated in sumptuous folio atlases. The expedition stopped at the Cape of Good Hope, passed through Bass Strait visiting Port Phillip, and arrived at Sydney on 1 December 1828. Extensive visits were made to both Sydney and Parramatta, where Dumont d'Urville visited Samuel Marsden; the expedition sailed for New Zealand in January 1827, explored Tasman Bay, found a pass between an island in Cook Strait and the northern shore of South Island (the island consequently named D'Urville and the strait French Strait) and worked up the coast of North Island, completing the 'most comprehensive exploration of the islands since Cook's death'. They made Tonga in April 1827, explored the Fiji Archipelago, New Britain and New Guinea. In November, after a stop at Amboina, they coasted along the north-west coast of Australia and reached Tasmania. In 1828 they continued to Vanikoro in search of traces of La Pérouse, and stopped at Guam in the Marianas, before returning via the Cape of Good Hope, reaching Marseille on 25 March 1829.

        Neuestes Gemälde von Australien

Vienna: Anton Doll, 1832. Octavo, with six full-page copperplate engravings; some old and small library stamps throughout, early shelf-mark on front board, but a very nice copy in an attractive contemporary European binding of glazed paper masquerading as quarter calf with russet label, marbled paper spine and boards. An early German-language history of New Holland, featuring crisp images of Sydney and Hobart, after Leopold Beyer and Sainson respectively. The work begins with a helpful introduction to the voyages of exploration, including a chronological table, and is followed by a long review of New Holland (pages 39-126). Later sections detail many of the most important islands in the Pacific, including good reviews of Hawaii, New Zealand and New Guinea. All of the plates make a lovely contribution to the visual history of the Pacific. Apart from the views of Sydney and Hobart, there are also strong depictions of Carteret Bay on the Bismarck Archipelago, the funerary practices of the Solomon Islands, a scene of the restrictions for taboo in Tonga, and of a British settlement in Tahiti. The work was published as volume 30 of Schütz's series Allgemeine Erdkunde, and a list of all the titles is given at the back. As this individual volume is the only one in the series relevant to the Pacific, it is commonly sold by itself: both the Mitchell Library and National Library of Australia copies are recorded as a single volume.

Sketch of the History of Van Diemen's Land , illustrated by a map of the island and an account of the Van Diemen's Land Company

John Richardson, London 1832 - Octavo, with two engraved plates and a large hand-coloured folding map (closed tear neatly repaired), very good in original boards with green cloth spine and printed label. Apart from the inherent unlikelihood of anyone making off with large quantities of slate, the claim of ownership is revealing for its total self-assurance in the face of the wilderness?' (People, Print and Paper).

Six volumes, duodecimo, 6 engraved plates (one in each volume), original blue printed wrappers preserved, early owner's name on the title-pages, old stamps from Barcelona library, bookplates of José Gallart Folch; a charming set in contemporary Spanish quarter calf, gilt. Very uncommon first Spanish edition of Cook's first voyage, published in 1832 as part of a series called the "New Library of Modern Voyages useful and interesting for Spanish youth." This work has a charming series of six plates which include a scene in Tahiti featuring the Chief Mourner, two New Zealand scenes (a warrior in profile, the war canoe), and concluding with a dramatic scene on board the Endeavour. The presence of the original printed wrappers bound-in is of more than passing interest as the back wrappers give an interesting overview of how the set was marketed, being sold for 6 reales per volume as they were issued whether in Madrid or in the provinces, and stressing the value of the work for the instruction of youth. Each volume would subsequently be priced 8 reales per volume. The translator, Alvarado y de la Pen?a, based his work on the French edition. He also prepared at least one other work of Australian interest, an edition of George Barrington published in Madrid circa 1815. Beddie listed copies in the Mitchell and National Library.

On The Economy of Machinery and Manufactures

London: Charles Knight, , 1832. Octavo (170 × 104 mm). Original purple cloth, rebacked preserving the original spine. Engraved title page. Original spine ends worn. First edition. On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures was Babbage's most successful lifetime publication, selling 3,000 copies. Prompted by the demands for precision in the construction of his first calculating engine, Babbage had made a conscientious and detailed survey of factories and workshops both in England and Europe. An encyclopaedic record of craft, manufacturing, and industrial processes, as well as an analysis of the domestic organization of factories, the work demonstrates Babbage's remarkable prescience. He proposed many scientific management techniques for the first time, including subdivided work, cost accounting, and merit pay systems. He advocated the decimalization of currency, foresaw the role of tidal power as an energy source, and predicted the exhaustion of coal reserves. "The book is at once a hymn to the machine, an analysis of the development of machine-based production in the factory, and a discussion of social relations in industry… It was at once translated into French and German, both translations being published in 1833. Throughout the world the book had much effect, becoming the 'locus classicus' of the discussion of machinery and manufacturing" (Anthony Human, Charles Babbage, Pioneer of the Computer). "Economy was a turning point in economic writing and firmly established Babbage as a leading authority of the industrial movement" (ODNB).

PRIMER DOCUMENT DE LA PUDA DE MONTSERRAT A FAVOR DE PAU GARRIGA I LA SEVA POSADA EN MARXA

1832 - Esparraguera. 1832. 4h. 32X22. Primer Doc. Ref 30 Biblioteca A. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Experimental researches in electricity. Bound extracts

London, 1832-56. <p>Faraday, Michael (1791-1867). Experimental researches in electricity. 30 series of papers, plus supplement to the 11th series, extracted from Philosophical Transactions. 4to. 18 plates. [London, 1832-56]. 285 x 224 mm. Extracts bound in 1 vol., modern morocco gilt. Fine set.</p><p>First Editions. An extremely rare, fine complete set of Faraday&#39;s epochal papers on electricity, as they originally appeared in the Philosophical Transactions over 24 years. It was through his "Experimental researches" that Faraday announced his major findings relating to electricity and magnetism, the most important of which was his discovery of the means of generating electricity from electro-magnetic induction-the principle behind the dynamo and the transformer, and the foundation of the modern use of electricity. The "Experimental researches" also contain Faraday&#39;s demonstration of the identity of all forms of electricity, his discovery of the laws of electrolysis, his announcement of the fundamental relations between light and magnetism, his first general theory of electricity as a function of interparticulate strain, and his last series of researches on magnetism, containing the germ of the modern field theory, in which Faraday rejected his earlier model of the transmission of magnetic energy in favor of one locating the manifestation of magnetic energy in the field surrounding the magnet. Our set includes Faraday&#39;s 30th and final series of the "Experimental researches," published in 1856 and not included in the book-form edition (1839-55) or in the collected papers, like ours, cited as no. 64 in Dibner&#39;s Heralds of Science; this 30th series contains Faraday&#39;s papers on "Constancy of differential magnecrystallic force in different media" (no. 38), "Action of heat on magnecrystals" (no. 39), and "Effect of heat upon the absolute magnetic force of bodies" (no. 40).         Autograph 'Proposal for an Alteration in the Introductory Rule of the Unitarian Association', in a letter to Watson.

18 May ; Great Yarmouth. 1832 - Small folio, 1 p. Twenty-seven lines of text. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged and worn paper, with thin strip from previous mounting adhering at head of reverse, which, with two small red wax seals and two postmarks, is addressed to 'John Watson Esqr. | No. 55 & 56 | Near St. Andrew's Ch. | Holborn Hill | London'. The text is entirely devoted to the subject under the heading. In a neat exposition of his position, Alexander proposes and defends three changes. The substitution of 'promulgation' for 'promotion' would, 'as our worthy friend Dr. Channing probably would say', have 'a more quickening effect'. The greater part of the document relates to the substitution of 'Christian Unitarianism' for 'Unitarian Christianity'. (According to his obituary in 'The Christian Reformer', Alexander 'distributed 20,000 copies of a little tract called "Christian Unitarianism"'.)

Autograph letter signed to Mr. Chauvin presenting a copy of the official account of his voyage

no date but circa, no place 1832 - Single sheet of laid paper, 207 x 260 mm., folded vertically to form a letter, written in a small and neat hand to first page and addressed - but not stamped - to the last, old folds; excellent.

First edition of this rare work promoting the &#8216;humane'; treatment of honey bees. From an uneducated background as a draper';s assistant, Nutt claimed to have invented his collateral hive before ever reading a book on bees. &#8216;Collateral boxes had been previously described by S. White (1756), and W. Dyer (1781)';; Nutt';s other great innovation was in his use of a thermometer, &#8216;probably among the first'; to use one in his hives. (British Bee Books, p. 118).Nutt's book ran to several later editions. This first edition is scarce, however, since the list of subscribers printed after the prelims accounts for only 232 copies; it is likely, therefore, only 300 copies were printed in this edition.British Bee Books, 215.
